The music genre is Happy Hardcore and was popular in the 90s, and people associated with the sub/counter culture were called "gabbers". It's great to see Joost incorporate this nostalgic part of Dutch 90s culture into our ESC submission!
I think that the building represents his youth and at the end it's burning, which is symbolic for him purging himself from the pain that he has carried around for too long, so he can move on and live his life.
This is how I see it as well. And in that burning building, he tells his younger and older self: it's OK, we've come full circle. I (current Joost) will set fire to this pain so that we all (current, younger, and older Joost) can move on. It's such an encouraging message for anyone in any kind of loss, that no matter what you have gone through, there will come a day when you are able to overcome the pain. I've never felt this deep about any Eurovision entry before.
Danke schön. 12 points to The Netherlands. The winner of the Eurovision Songcontest 2024. This is a masterpiece. Euro papa= Euro dad, because papa is dad in Dutch. A sad song with lyrics with a meaning, with a message, in a happy hardcore melody. A letter to his father who died when he was a 12 year old child. His mother past away a year later. He promised his father that he will be someday on the Eurovision Songcontest stage. His father told him that it is possible because there are no borders between the countries, and no limits to follow his dream. Borders and limitations are made by human. In every country he went, he felt the pain and grief of no having his parents. The fire symbolise letting go of the grief and pain, and the start of a new chapter in his live.
Let all the young people of Europe break the Euro song festival by all start voting on this song and show they can unite as one and show its their party 😊
This song is a tribute to his father / Parents who passed away. Europa in Dutch means Europe. Pa or Papa means dad. His dad once told him the world has no “Grenzen” which could be translated to both borders (Borders are a man made concept) or limitations (Many people create their own limitations in their own mind). This life lesson inspired him to have keep having an open view on the world and live his life to the fullest without putting limitations on himself. After his parents died he carried a lot of pain with him. No matter where on earth he was (Germany, Italy), whatever food he would eat (Escargots in France, Fish and chips in UK, Paella in Spain), he still carries this pain with him. In the end nobody but himself could deal with this pain and he himself must find peace with his losses. Only going through the grief and finding inner peace would put a end to this suffering. This song tells the story of him as an orphan trying to do exactly that. Him creating this song was a huge part of this process. The line with Stromae / papaoute (which Translates to: Dad where are you), is followed with the words about how he wants his parents to be proud of him. He used to watch Eurovision with his parents and told them one day he would be there performing. Which is what he now did.
Danke für diese Reaction. Der Song läuft bei mir seit Tagen in Dauerschleife. Für mich der einzige Grund mal wieder ESC zu schauen dieses Jahr. Großartig Joost. Ik hou ervan ♥
What a wonderful reaction. I love how people react. Going insane at first and then get the goosebumps when he reflects to his late father. ❤ I get emotional at the last part, having lost my brother, way too young, 3 years ago. This singer is a genius.

Dj Paul Elstak is still the godfather of Rotterdam Gabber house. Its where house and the Gabber House life style started and the hakkuh dance style was born . He’s the bald guy in the car in the clip. And yep with this clip Gabber-house is going to revive🎉 So get yourself a new or a vintage Aussie (australian training suit) shave your head, and dust of sneakers. Time to party.😊
This song has a deeper meaning. 'Papa' is translated 'dad' in dutch. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. When he was younger he watched the Eurovision with his parents and said “I’m gonna sing at Eurovision one day”. Joost sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. In the end he says goodbye to the pain of his loss by burning the photo, without losing the memory. This song is also an ode to Europe. His dad told him that it’s a world without borders, because borders are invented by humans. And that you can create your own world. The dance break is happy hardcore - a music style that was invented in the Netherlands, also called gabber music. Bringing a personal loss, the feeling of Europe and the dutch culture together; that is art.
