      @@johnnysweekendsso would you recommend this Predator 5000 or the Genmax 6000IED/7250IEDC?

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All depends
      Do you need 240v ?
      The warranty and return for the predator will be pretty easy if something happened.
      The 7250 is a nice unit and I would grab that over the the 6000 but it’s a lot more money and does weight more but not by much.
      So far the 7250 is getting good reviews overall.
      But again it’s a lot more money. But if you want 240v then it’s not a question

      I live at 3200' but travel to the ocean and to the mountains alot and use my generator every trip. I can change jets no problem but fuel injection would be perfect for the people that don't possess the mechanical knowledge or just don't want to worry about it. There are a few gens out there with fuel injection or an "altitude adjustment lever" but it's not wide spread across small engines. We got away from carburetored engines in 1987 "GM", why are small engines so far behind?

    I like the specs.
    The sound is not too bad but well above my Westinghouse @52 dB, however,
    I keep it under the house and it rarely is heard at all.
    I like that it is much easier to service.
    If I was buying a new generator, I would definitely consider this one.
    Dual fuel is really nice. I have a 100 lb propane tank which would be very convenient.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s definitely a nice unit. Wish it was a pinch smaller and lighter but again seems to be built tough.
      Although I have tested the Westinghouse as well, in a db test video and it was one of the louder units in the same tests with other gens. You can’t go off of the stated of what’s on the box. It’s still a quiet unit and they are all pretty close. But where you have it is great as long as properly vented and exhaust is pumped out..👍🏼

    Nice review Johnny. Thank you! It looks like a nice generator but I can't figure out why Harbor Freight only has 90 day warranties on their generators. That has to be the shortest warranty of any generator.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yea I always wondered that. Only thing I can think of is they want you to buy the warranty which means you almost have to..😕

    • @larryjanson4011
      @larryjanson4011 ปีที่แล้ว

      no real warranty cause they are made in communist china from cheap communist china export junk.
      no they just want you to buy another unit when the first, second, third, forth, etc fail.
      buy then you have paid more than a very reliable honda unit. that you can buy things like filters and spark plugs for.
      honda's must be chained and bolted down, as like assault weapons, they can walk away on there own.
      and the honda units are much quieter than any of the "other" brands.
      these communist chinese made harbor freight units must be in a enclosed box to get down to the dbi required in ALL national parks. honda's can be in the open.
      but it is good they are including a rv plug on them.

    • @3fsw3
      @3fsw3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I never buy their warranties because their generators seem to out perform the competition. If they fail after a few years of my fairly heavy use, I can replace it (with updated version) and still be under the Honda price gouge. My 3500 is a superstar

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say not really a failing bending but more of where the motor is in relation to the compression stroke or exhaust stroke. If it fires real quick the bendix will free spin once engine is started because its a set time for activation. I have started this several times and it does this about 2 out of 10 starts I would say.
      And thank you. 😀👍🏼

Can you give me an idea how much maintenance this model needs? Am I going to have to get under the hood and adjust stuff and swap parts all winter long? Can I keep this outside all winter out in the open, or does it need some weather protection around it? I agree. The Champion 4650 is the closest competitor to the Predator 5000. I don't consider the extra starting watts on the Predator 5000 or even the Champion 5500 to really matter, since 4650 watts (30A @ 120VAC) is the absolute maximum that the 30A line can handle. I suppose you could have the 30A socket tied into your RV or home's transfer box, plus a couple items plugged into the 5-15 outlets...but I am not sure many people run their generators like that.

      @@SlowJamminJames i use it while camping about once a month and have never changed the jets or anything, ran on gas only and i’d say it does good, not great. it still overloads occasionally, which I think is due to the AC kick-on with no soft start. the last camping trip I was running it for 8 hours at a time with the AC in dry mode (compressor cycles on for 10 mins off for 5) 3 days in a row and only got the overload error once. all in all i’d say it’s a solid step up from the 3500, the remote start is awesome, it’s quiet, reliable, fuel efficient, just wish I would have gotten the most recent version and not the original but otherwise wouldn’t hesitate to run a new one when this one dies (if it ever does)

    Seems like a nice little quiet genny. Only issue, or downfall, is the lack of a 30A 120V/240V selector outlet. For an extra $50, they could install a 240V/30A outlet to plug into a house, to run both sides of the household electric panel. I have a small 3500 watt Duromax (12 years old) that has that capability. Extremely noisy, but quite capable. Would love to see HF add that to this unit. If they did, this unit would be a home run. The Predator 9500 has that option, but it's so massive and heavy.

      @@johnnysweekends Correct, open frame. I'm in a canal neighborhood. Only time we lose power is during a coastal storm, and the municipality shuts the grid down to protect the energized electric panels in the basements from getting flooded. Neither myself nor my neighbors care about noise of generators, as we care more about each others houses. Pumps & more pumps working are a must. I do have multiple lithium battery banks to power the house at night, but yes a small quieter inverter with a 30A/240V option would be nice. Or even the ability to run two small decently priced inverters in parallel with 30A/240V would be a good option.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  ปีที่แล้ว

      THe old Honda eu3000is was or is a great machine. Or maybe used to be. It’s quiet and over all reliable. It’s super heavy, has no wheels and is a little under powered in todays standards of people wanting more and more power. If you only ran one ac unit it would run for ever. But it’s only rated at 2800 watts. Not 3000. It will run max load at 3000 but for a limited time. Which could be 3 mins up to 15-20 mins depending on conditions.
      Now the predator 3500 original models were work horses and lasted a long time with many getting into 5 digit hours. Highest I saw was 17k something. Very impressive.
      Now they updated the 3500 and it seems to have more issues than it used to and so for the price difference why not get the 5000. It feels well built, has a larger engine, is dual fuel and remote and more. I always recommend no matter what you buy just get the warranty, its worth it.
      But in the winter? How much power do you really need?n I assume no AC units, so why get something big at all. That’s the only time they are needed. Bigger will burn more fuel, be harder on your back and add overall weight.
      So if you dont need that much power look into a smaller unit like a suit case type generator.

Given that fact, and with this being so much heavier, would you recommend it over other smaller units? If not, which smaller unit would you recommend to allow running a 15K AC? Or is going to a parallel configuration advantageous if size and weight is key? Two smaller units could fit nicely inside our RV even if need be. Just wondering your thoughts on those options? Great review! In your opinion, what is the quietest 5000 watt generator in the market today?

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is pretty darn quiet at 1/4 load especially if not in a concrete pad.
      There are not many gens right at 5000 most are 4500 ish.
      The champion 4500/4650 is pretty darn quiet. The 3500 predator. The champion 5500 but it’s a little bigger and a pinch louder but I haven’t had a chance to compare it to others.
      Some units are now hard to get in California so I have a harder time getting some units. Stores don’t carry them and they won’t ship

  • @shanwar9844
    @shanwar9844 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Looks like a very nice upgrade. Great work as always. I love the serviceability especially the pilot jet! On that note I have never ending crap with that particular part. Do you think Lucas fuel stabilizer works better than sea foam or sta-bil. I don't want to start a whole thing with comments but I do everything by the book and that still clogs once in a while. I don't have this generator but I think the problem is universal. They say get ethanol free gas. I live in NYC. That isn't an option unless I drive really far away with a car full of 25 gallons of gas. I need the city stuck with ethanol best stabilizer.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have had a great luck with the Lucas products and I did seafoam for a few years and honestly I think this is better.
      If you are always having problems it could be the gas station is pumping dirty fuel.
      Or maybe there is debris in your gas can.
      I would check the can and see and then maybe that will give a idea and then maybe a different gas station.
      I don’t use ethanol free as it’s $8.50 a gallon. Not worth it.

    Nice review but still have a few questions. I've always heard running on propane is quite a bit noisier than running on gasoline, did you ever test this? Also, can two of these be linked to provide 240 vac?

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  ปีที่แล้ว

      No difference in db levels from propane to gas as I have tested several times as i thought propane would be quieter, unfortunately not.
      This model paired with a second will not double volts only amps. So still 120V

    I have gone through 3 Westinghouse igen 4500 dfc and 1 I6500 Genmax in the last 2 years. The Genmax sucked as well as their customer service so bad that I threw it away. The Wesinghouse's have had different problems as in cant get parts for them because customer service is too stupid to understand what I am telling them. The only reason I bought those others was because I needed remote and HF didn't have a remote unit. Finally they have!! My biggest complaint would be that they didn't take the time to make the fuel system EFI. I have a Predator 3500. I've changed the jetting for my altitude, but wouldn't it be nice to just be able to run it and have an O2 sensor make adjustments for air/fuel conditions!?!/1

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are pros and cons with FI as well.
      If the injector becomes plugged it’s not just a pull apart and clean and go. It has to be cleaned with a machine to properly clean it and make sure it flowing correctly.
      Fuel pumps can also go out, and system components are more expensive.
      We will see how well some EFI units do soon. I’ll be doing high altitude testing soon
