POV of a Northern Ireland Coastal Gem (and I'd never even heard of it!) Welcome to The Gobbins...

  • During my dash around the UK capitals, I had a bit of time in Belfast so ended up booking a last-minute guided walk out on the Antrim coast. And boy am I glad I made the effort. Due to me trying to stay on my feet, I decided to film this as a 'point of view' style video. I hope it'll give you a good idea of what's involved if it's something you're considering yourself. And if you're not, well, enjoy it anyway, it's a beautiful path!
I toured The Gobbins on 30th March 2023

Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

Brilliant video Steve. The Gobbins path was constructed as a tourist attraction over 100 years ago before falling into disrepair. I can remember going down to it in the 70's when we stayed at a rented cottage that my grandparents had a few miles away, but you could only go a little way on it. We spent all summer down on Islandmagee and it was the best place to be a kid. Theres a walk from Whitehead station along the seafront to the lighthouse that is a lovely walk too and not that far from the Gobbins. One thing you didnt seem to do was go into the Rinkha and have an ice cream which is a home made recipe and imo the best ice cream going...but im biased lol

Another excellent video. You're really making me view Northern Ireland in a different way. It's so much more than just the troubles, and another great place to visit on these fair isles. Must get there at some point and I got a lot of ideas of where to go thanks to you Steve.

I am ashamed to say I have never visited any part of Ireland, and considering Northern Ireland is, as at the time of writing, part of the same country as I live in, I am particularly ashamed.
You've shown many wonderful parts of Northern Ireland in various videos, and this one makes me want to go there more than ever.
I am sure I can persuade my wife and kids that it's a great idea.
    Thanks.

The POV style meant less gabbin and more Gobbin... Brilliant video Steve. If you ever venture westward, The Marble Arch Caves in Fermanagh might be of interest to you. You could combine it with Cuilcagh Mountain Boardwalk Trail also nicknamed the Stairway to Heaven Walk. Both of these are must does for visitors to Fermanagh. Might be van job though, public transport is limited "west of the Bann"

If you can give some tentative hours for buses, I might be interested as well (I don't have a driving licence). And some recommendations on where to stay... I have free train travel, but buses are not too expensive, so...

    • @BigTubz
      @BigTubz ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@barvdw
There are hourly buses from the international airport and I'm pretty sure it's the same from the city, I think it's Ulsterbus number 261. Either would be less than 2 hours travel time.
Belmore court motel in Enniskillen would be a budget friendly base, don't be fooled by the name, I've stayed in worse hotels for 3 times the price. The owner Terry will be extremely welcoming. If you're set on a hotel, the Manor house or Killhevlin. Plenty of Airbnb options too.
Plenty to keep you busy around the county town. Couple of beautiful national trust houses, Florencecourt, Castlecoole and Castle Archdale. Enniskillen castle, Devenish Island and a pint of G in the beautiful Victorian era pub, Blakes of the hollow.

Yay! You're back in Northern Ireland and at the lovely north coast, too. 25+ trips to NI and I haven't done The Gobbins Path yet and, I think with my knee issue, it won't be happening for me so I'm super happy you took us along with you. Most of our trips to NI we use public transit and (knock wood!) have found it clean and efficient. We haven't done the Belfast to the Causeway train journey yet which is supposed to be gorgeous. Glad you had a great time. PS we don't talk about PO ferries either, we're Stena people. :) - Sandi & Greg H.

Great video, we did it last week but because of the waves only got as far as 10.40 on your timeline. The rest was closed due to elf n safety! We had the same guide as you. A few days before we did the Stairway to Heaven in Fermanagh, clocked about 7 and a half miles in just over 4 hours.

Another masterpiece here Steve, don’t know why I’d expect anything less 🤣🤣. Again NI is somewhere I’ve never been but always wanted to go, albeit with a little trepidation (for obvious reasons). The weekend just gone I was offered free accommodation in Belfast by a friend of mine who couldn’t believe I’ve never been over… with an offer like that and having just viewed this superb video, I’m officially out of excuses for not making the trip over I think!! 😂😂. Cheers 🍻 Steve.

Well Done Steve! I was rhythm guitar for a local 'Irish' band in Peterborough, Ontario and couldn't help notice the brilliant soundtrack in this video.....Who are these guys? Brings back old memories of really fast chording and keeping up with some blazing fiddles! BTW our old band was called.......Fyd-L-Styx......!

Wow, that was epic! What a masterpiece of engineering - just enough danger to give it a bit of spice, but totally safe. One thing I have learned is that you can either look at the view, or watch where you put your feet, to try to do both at the same time is disaster.

Love it! When I was a kid living in Ballycarry, I would climb down and fish there all the time, almost all of the original bridges and railings had rusted away and fallen into the sea of course so it was pretty dangerous but an awesome place to explore. There had been a fair few accidents over the years leading up to it's closure and redevelopment, I am yet to try it as it is now but maybe a good place to revisit this summer.

Absolutely beautiful! I seem to remember at some point watching a Susan Calman program where She went to the Gobbins and She mentioned something about it being the place where people came to see the Titanic's engines start for the first time, I could be wrong though, either way when I get to Northern Ireland eventually I think i'll be £20 worse off... And quite right not talking about P&O Ferries on the channel, the scary thing is before Northlink came in 2002, in Orkney (and Shetland) we had P&O so goodness knows what would of happened if not for Northlink...
