Travelling The Scotland Tourists Don't Go

- I love exploring lesser discovered places and today I’ll be travelling the Scotland tourists don’t go. As most visitors to Scotland flock to the Highlands or The Isle of Skye, the Kintyre Peninsula located on Scotland’s west coast is a beautiful and much quieter alternative.
Campbeltown in Kintyre, Scotland was once home to the whisky capital of the world and in this Scotland vlog I’ll be taking you on a road trip around the stunning The Kintyre Peninsula. I only found about the Kintyre 66 driving route after my trip, which I totally recommend if you do plan a visit.
Some other highlights of my time on the Kintyre Peninsula, include a visit to Tarbert, the Skippness Seafood Cabin and the Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse. You'll probably recognise the Mull of Kintyre from that classic Paul McCartney song.
Stay tuned for my next video where I’ll be visiting the community-owned Isle of Gigha - a one-of-a-kind spot in Argyll and Bute.

WHO AM I?
I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland. I moved overseas in 2011 and I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in my home country Scotland and I’ve never even visited places like the Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Skye or the NC500.
I am a huge fan of campervan travel and alternative living and while living in Japan, my partner and I converted both a van and a bus into campervans. We explored Japan extensively, sharing our adventures on our two Japanese language TH-cam channels. I've spent over 600 nights living in vans, it’s my favourite way to travel due to the incredible freedom, adventure and the affordability.
My campervan is a 2001 Toyota Hiace high roof van. It was originally used by the Royal Mail and then purchased by the previous owner and self-converted into a DIY campervan. Although the van is already converted, in order for it to be an off-grid living van, it requires some campervan DIY, especially when it comes to electrics and plumbing.
On this channel, I’ll be sharing more about this van, any DIY I do, and most importantly sharing my road trip adventures as I finally get to travel my beautiful home country of…. SCOTLAND!

Thanks for joining me in exploring The Kintyre Peninsula! There was a problem with the prices not showing up on the screen in today’s video. I know the currency conversions are useful for some of you, so I will share them below:
Supermarket Shopping: GBP £35 / USD $44 / JPY 6447
Large wash: GBP £5 / USD $6.29 / JPY 921
Small wash: GBP £4 / USD $5 / JPY 737
Dryer: GBP £2 / USD $2.52 / JPY 368
Bake box tiffin: GBP £2.50 / USD $3.15 / JPY 460
Hey Ruth i have a message on you
Cracks me up that people leave critical comments - if they know so much let them make their own videos. Smh.
I did think to write that in my reply 😂
At 4.35, you’ve managed to video me and my wife comjng out of Cadenhead’s. Wonderful shop!
Great video. The shopping you bought from Tesco's struck me as being a bit pricey, you just seemed to get a few basic items. I do like their unsweetened almond drink, which was in the clip. They have just announced record profits, and the prices just seem to keep increasing , so I signed a petition calling on them to reduce them a bit, instead of all the money going into the pockets of a few people at the top! All best wishes. ❤

KINTYRE cape is windy after all, l wanted to see a magnificent view from the sky with a drone, Paul McCartney MULL OF KINTYRE, ah~Thick fog is coming from the sea… Rush-san oats, and I'm probably plaming to make porridge for breakfast.
Well done Ruth, you found the flavour of the Kintyre and Campbeltown. I grew up there, and where you stopped on the MOK Lighthouse Road with the views of Sanda, Sheep Island, Ailsa Craig, Ayrshire and Ireland, is where I where I used to stop with my elderly father for a cup of tea on my visits home. He LOVED that spot. Thanks for a great piece on the area.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! Have you seen the other one about Campbeltown?
@@ruthaisling No I haven't.
Fun fact - there are 13 places called “Tarbet” (or various spellings of that name) in Scotland and all of them are at a low lying isthmus between two bodies of water. Because the name derives from the Gaelic words for “carry across” - so “carry (the boat) across (here)”.
That's so interesting, thanks for sharing! I'll look out for more Tarbet towns on my travels
@@ruthaisling During the period when the northern and western islands were ruled by the Norwegians they claimed the southern portion of Kintyre, as they could move a boat across the isthmus. So obviously it was an island not part of the mainland!
It is a long drive down to Southend.
Campbeltown Airport was RAF Machrihanish.
Great video and information!! Thank you for sharing 👍
Hello from the US! I’ve been to Campbeltown and to the Mull of Kintyre…I’ve stood at the lighthouse and was barely able to see the coast of Ireland …Definitely a highlight of my life..the drive was the most fun part though..This roads leading to the Mull have to be seen to be believed..a friend what was traveling with us had quite a time walking back up to the carpark…I look forward to returning there again. It’s very easy to see why Sir Paul chose such a remote place. I shall haste myself back to Scotland sooner rather than later 🇺🇸🏴
Another great Film, Thank you.
What lovely lady. Like how she tells history of places she guves good narratives in presentations
Scotland beaufiful place.
❤
Thanks Andy, that’s really kind of you to say!
thanks for your shows on our beautiful scotland
I got a good surprise there. The amazing sea food restaurant served “Gravad Lax”!!! I didn’t know that they use the Swedish words for that. Not translated. I know that east Scottish and Swedish have some similar words, but this was new.
Thank you Ruth . 🌳
Thanks again for sharing your adventures. I did the Mull of Kintyre in 2018, visiting the memorial above the light house.
Thank you for your wonderful video. I had been at Edinburgh 46 years ago as student. At that time, I heard the song of Mull of Kintire by Paul McCartney every day. It is nice song and I love it.
From that time, vistting Mull of Kintire is my deam. But 46 years has passed. It may no chance to vist for me. But I am very happy to watch your video. I could see Mull of Kintire through your
video. It is so nice land scape and lovery heath. I hope that you wil be fine and show us more Scotland. Than you again.
That is a lovely story, thanks for sharing. I'm glad you could experience the Mull of Kintyre through the video!
The "Wee Toon" and Kintyre, finished my schools years there, then worked in Springbank for a while. 30 years on, I visit often as Westport has to be one of Scotland's best beaches. Amazing place that's often overlooked.
Oh yes it's lovely, I did visit Westport too but didn't film it!
Love the scenery! Beautiful!
Thank you very much for watching!

OMG! The seafood platter looks great! And I love the CAKE BOX!
They were SO good!
I've been really enjoying your videos! You're lovely!

ポールマッカートニーの話をきいてからのスコットランドの道をみて”the long and winding road"の歌を思い出しました。彼はスコットランドの曲がりくねった道をイメージに

Very enjoyable Ruth. So much so I am now subscribed. Thank You.

Great video Ruth. Really interesting.

Another great video Ruth 👍🏼
Thank you! 😀
I’ve been in Japan for 15 years and have just returned from Ireland. The beauty of the country and the warmth of the people, my people, shocked me to my core.
Wow I’m so glad you enjoyed Ireland! I love Ireland too 😍
Mealso,I’m a Scot but had some great holidays in Ireland, lovely people
Wonderful walk and talk Ruth, Somewhere I have not visited thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Well presented. Kintyre is amazing so many happy memories from here.
It really is!
Ruth watching your videos is so lovely and that beautiful smile makes it all the better keep it
Thanks Sean!
Lovely film. When I was much younger we spent many happy summers in Stranraer and the surrounding areas.
Thank you, Dumfries and Galloway is a lovely area 😀
Yet another beautiful video.
Thank you!
Amazing videos as always, you are very talented ❤
That's so kind, thank you!
Enjoying your videos Ruth especially this one that's one of my favourite parts of the country and always a nice wee change of scenery from Glasgow. Tarbert also has great seafood options and Carradale bay is a beautiful spot between Tarbert and Campbeltown. Talking about seafood if you find yourself over in Mull and before they close for the season the roast shellfish platter in cafe fish in Tobermory is incredible. It's still never been beaten for me
Brilliant, thanks so much for the recommendation!
Thanks Ruth for showing us Kintyre, I have been thinking of exploring more of it.
I also like the Ailsa Craig I can see it from my parkup here at Saltcoats.
I am heading back to the wonderful Isle of Arran next week. Have fun.
The view of Ailsa Craig from the Ayrshire coast is just wonderful, I could stare at it all day haha! Have a great time back on Arran!
Salmon is probably my favorite fish....Yum
It's fun to travel along with you ... I especially liked your closeups of the colorful local flora ... getting the local inside scoop is also great ... it's one of the things I enjoyed most during my teen years into my twenties when I hitchhiked all over ...
I'm glad you noticed those, I wondered if maybe those were boring to share! Thanks for watching the videos!
@@ruthaisling ~ I'm curious about how many stars there are at night ... that's one of the things I enjoy most about being in the great outdoors ... will be looking thru your videos for anything like that ... thanks in advance ... 🥸🙃
Such great content...Ruth. thanks for sharing your thoughts.
You are so welcome!
@@ruthaisling Ruth I'm sorry but I'm dying of a fatal disease and only you can cure it. I think your channel is quite impressive and I'm dying of a broken heart please marry me so you and I can get a hold of life and help each other out. I'm a good cook and house work is not a problem for me.
Your the best for you tube travel video's... really
I was visiting the area and at the Crinan canal at the start of August.
Visited Gigha just over 10 years ago staying in a lovely b&b.
Beautiful island so hope you enjoyed that trip too
Loved my time on Gigha, there is a brilliant new campsite there, looking forward to sharing the video about the island soon
It was a very beautiful video again this time.
I want to see oven cooking soon.
Thanks for watching. Cooking in the van?
@@ruthaisling I would like to see it if possible. Cooking in the car! ^_^v
Loved your wee story regarding the lighthouse, I had a similar experience when in the middle of nowhere I discovered Todhead Point Lighthouse on the East Coast (half hours' drive north of Gourdon). Sadly, it was being dismantled, but the two workers from the Lighthouse Service very kindly let me have a (free rein) look around. The Scottish lighthouse and their outbuildings are so special and the attention to detail is amazing. Thanks, Ruth, for showing us yet another great part of Scotland.
Oh wow what an amazing experience getting to see inside!!
Ruth, I quite enjoy your video tours, so thanks from Canada for doing them. The scenery you capture and accompany with informative commentary is wonderful. I too seek places not targeted by tourism when I'm in Scotland. I find the quieter, quaint areas soothing. Often, the locals are friendlier too, not having to constantly put up with influxes of tourists. All the best to you!
Glad you like them! Thank you for the kind comments.
i enjoy your trips across our beautiful Scotland take care
Thanks!
Being American, and of multiple pedigrees primarily Scottish and English, your videos are inspiring me to plan a trip to the land of my ancestors who came to America from Scotland in the early 1700's. Thanks!
Hope you can visit sometime!
I'll have a plate of that seafood. Love the sights too.
I love potato scones. However, you can't buy then anywhere in me so I leaned to make them myself. Another great video Ruth, very interesting. That's what I really love about your videos, there not (just look at this and look at that) you always have a great story and some great information to go with them.
I’m glad you enjoy the info! Thank you 🙏
Ruth thanks for sharing this I lived up there for 20years with my x wife a local lassie I miss the country and the people lol from me in Birmingham xx ❤😊
What a lovely place to have lived!
I really enjoy your videos Ruth, yes we have some amazing countryside in scotland, my grandpa came from Caithness and my cousin Jill used to live on Sky, some amazing scenery on Sky anyway another geat video, take care Andrew.🙂
Thank you Andrew. Yes we have amazing scenery!

Lovely video of an unsung part of Scotland. As a child my parents took the family to a holiday caravan just North of Cambelltown. Loved the remoteness and beauty of the place.
That must have been a lovely place to go on holidays
@@ruthaisling As a young boy it was amazing/ In the country (lots of adders around), by the sea - fishing from a small boat and catching loads of mackeral and riding the horses from the place where we staying. It was nearly 60 years ago and it will be different now😄
Ruth, I'd admiring how you've positioned yourself to be free to travel & explore. Enjoy & your viewers will enjoy.
I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos!
I've been to France & Belgium twice over the last 2 years. I'm from Canada so driving on the right was the norm for me. Having spent time in Arras & Ypres, I especially enjoyed seeing those places again. @@ruthaisling
Loved the video :) If you ever head this way again, ignore the signs on the saddell beach estate. I live 10 mins up the road and walk the beach a couple of times a week, you missed a real treat. I also highly reccomend Davaar island which you can only accsess while the tide is out, the artwork in the caves are truly stunning, such an amazing spot. Happy travels :)
Thanks for the tips! I will definitely visit Saddell beach next time.
Loved this, Southend is a gem
Yes it is!
I'm from Ireland and visit Scotland regularly. Do agree that the cost of a grocery shop there seems more expensive now than for same items back home, and that includes allowing for exchange rate differences. Would be interested to see how Scottish prices compare to the rest of the UK.
those nado noodles are superb, i get them myself.

Hi
I just started visiting your posts on your travels around Scotland and fantastic viewing! My wife and I have been travelling to all the places you are visiting and have gained many friends during our travels and look forward to your visit to south uist and the lochboisdale hotel and meet Callum and Karen their food is excellent! Happy travels ❤
Thanks Jim! Ill be sure to visit if I'm ever in South Uist!
Just subscribed, love your video. I really hope I get to Scotland one day it's my dream. 😊
Thank you, I hope you can visit too!
Thank you for your wonderful videos!
Nature such as green prairie and wild coastline also attract travelers!
I miss the Tesco supermarket.
I feel that the prices in Scotland are higher than in Japan!
Groceries in Scotland are much more expensive than Japan I feel, but fruit in Scotland is cheaper!
Hi Ruth. I'm enjoying your videos. As an expat now in the middle east its a good way to visit Scotland on YT 😁. Your videos are high quality and I love the way you compose them and the presentation. Very professional. Living the dream from a camper van 😍.
Thank you so much, glad to hear you’re enjoying the videos. Where in the Middle East are you? I lived in Doha for 3 years
@@ruthaisling I'm in Oman. I haven't visited Qatar yet, only in transit. One day 🙏
I just found your web sight Ruth! Just Magnificent! If you are back in Campbelltown, there is a small park that is Dedicated to Linda McCartney ( With a lovely bronze monument) !
Thanks, glad you like the website! I need to re-visit Campbeltown, I'm interested to do some of the distillery tours there too.
First time on your channel, Ruth. Loved your video. Such beautiful scenery in Scotland. Liked and subscribed👍👌. Greetings from Adelaide, Australia🦘🦘
Thanks Peter!
Hi Ruth, I look forward to watching your videos every Sunday. As they are informative and you focus more than other vloggers on the history, places and people of the area’s you visit. And you try to get a snapshot of life there. I thought you would have gone over to Davaar island which is in the Campbeltown bay. You can walk over to the island at low tide and there’s a cave with a painting of Jesus in it which has an interesting story behind it. Enjoy your time on Gigha 😊x
I'm glad to hear you are enjoying the videos, that means a lot! That's interesting about Davaar Island, I'll go there if I'm ever back in the area.
Beautiful lady, beautiful presentations and explanations 😻😻
Glad you like them!
The items you purchased as the store were expensive maybe to you but so much better than the US. Our prices are out of control here! Wish I was there to see beautiful Scotland! My dad’s family is from Scotland and Northern England. I hope to visit soon!
I hope you are able to visit soon!
Freebird and should count her blessings, also really gorgeous 😮
I'm planning on going to Scotland but wasn't sure on where to go. After seeing that platter with salmon, oysters and crab, now I know. Thanks Ruth! 🥰
I’m glad the video provided some inspiration! Thanks for watching!
I have wanted to travel to Scotland for many years. Especially to Edinburgh, being a history buff. I recently found your videos, glad to see "the other side" of Scotland. Very enjoyable. My surname is English, (Bradburn), meaning "broad stream." My grandparents came from the area. Really wish to travel there. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching the videos Daniel!

"Doesn't have the same popularity " I can think of no finer recommendation 😊
Excellent video, makes me want to get on the ferry from Ireland and visit.
You should!
Thanks for sharing this film. It brought back many memories for me as I lived and worked on the peninsula and left 20 years ago moving on to the Western Isles. I managed a Bank in Campbeltown and we had a Bank van which visited a few of the little villages surrounding Campbeltown offering banking services for locals so I know the area well. When I moved there my new neighbour described the area as the biggest cul-de-sac in Scotland I have just watched your film on Jura as well and sadly never made it over to Islay or Jura but I did visit Davaar and Arran where my Dads family originate from. I look forward to future content as I often described my Banking career as a world tour of Scotland so I hope you cover or have covered some more of the places I worked.
What a lovely place to work and I like that description of the biggest cul-de-sac in Scotland. It does feel like that! Where else in Scotland did you work in banks?
I started my career in Aboyne Aberdeenshire on the 6th July 1981 then moved to Aberdeen & had a week of releif in Shetland then Glasgow as an IT Trainer then back to Aberdeen then Ellon and back to Aberdeen where I became a interview/seller in Cults & Banchory then Managers Assistant then Clydebank in that role then Manager in Campbeltown then Stornoway and back to Glasgow as a Business Manager then received a redundancy package in 2012 due to ill health. I was given some amazing opportunities due to the role I had the highlight being given a flight on The Stornoway Coastguard Helicopter and being roped out at !00 feet rather than landing and invites to fish & shoot in some amazing locations including Amhuinnsuidhe Castle on The Isle of Harris famed for it's Salmon & Sea Trout fishing and stunning location. .@@ruthaisling

Love the videos. A great vision of Scotland. As a Greenokian, I have no excuse for not visiting these places.
Thanks so much for watching, you are quiet close-by!
We loved your latest video. Well done on doing the walk to the lighthouse on such a day. Good thing you had your wooly hat! That seafood platter looked absolutely amazing. We'll be back in Scotland in a couple of weeks and it will be a salmon and shellfish-filled holiday. :) Call me a nerd but I enjoyed hearing about the shop prices and laundry costs. We always check out the grocery stores when we travel (we usually AirBNB it so do some food shopping) to see the brands and the prices. We've been married 18 years and our weekly grocery bill has doubled. Inflation is everywhere.
Thanks for watching and I'm glad to hear that sharing the prices is helpful! Your salmon and shellfish-holiday plans sound amazing!! I hope you have a fab time!
Doesn’t look too shabby there 😊
Hello Ruth. A wonderful video of Kintyre. I come from Northern Ireland and having visited Scotland on many occasions, I have yet to check the Mull out. As a landscape photographer I tend to visit my old haunts like the Trossachs, Glencoe and Skye. Grocery prices here have increased quite a bit recently but then I only have to buy for one.
Those locations are definitely more dramatic and photogenic 😀
Another great video Ruth, as someone who lives at the north of the Kintyre peninsula, it's great to see it as others see it. Are you showing Tarbert and the Crinan canal in future videos?
Thanks for watching! I don't have plans to at the moment, maybe when I revisit the area again. I'll be visited Gigha in the next video!
I love your videos , I have been to many of your remote places visited , that seafood place looks great ! I would have to treat myself the next time I visit the area , if they are open . Living the highland side of Glasgow I am not more then likely to spend more than a couple of nights away from home . Much much better than living in Kent. I recommend Scotland to anyone.
You should! It's a bit pricey but was worth it as a treat!
Campbeltown sounds the perfect blend between convenience, gorgeous views, and WHISKY (love Springbank and Glen Scotia).
I’ll need to give them a try and return for more of a whisky focused trip!
One of the videos i was waiting for Ruth.
The airfield at Cambletown is known as one of the most scenic.
Reckon you would have been alright with a glass of wine at the seafood place, thanls for the recommendations & i love the cake honesty box idea.😊😊😊
I too have noticed how expensive life is here since coming back from Vienna in 2020 after being made redundant just ahead of Covid 19.
Maybe the bread would have soaked up the white wine haha! Aldi is my favourite supermaket, it feels much better value than the others!
Ruth is Scotland is beautiful as it looks in your video
In the countryside areas yes! Some towns and cities have rough areas but I think that’s like most places
