A teacher where I used to teach was helping a parent register their child. She didn't know her child's bus number. The teacher said she could go to the library and their would be someone there to tell her that number. It had been about an hour and this teacher realized she hadn't come back. She then received a call from that parent telling her that she was at the local library and they couldn't help her. She was supposed to go to the school library. You are so right when you say we can't make this up!

This happened many years ago but still creepy. I was one of the last people in the school after evening parent teacher conferences. A young, attractive female teacher ran back in the building and asked me and a few other stragglers to stay with her and walk back out with her to her car in a few minutes as the father of one of her student's waited till the end of conferences and came up to her in the parking lot as she was opening her car door and asked her out. She quickly said she didn't date the parents of students and ran back in the building saying she forgot something. This was made creepier by the fact that he waited around about 45 minutes after his kid's conference to the end of parent teacher conferences to approach her in the parking lot. Creepy.

I willingly told her that I would let him complete the assignments and put in a grade change. He turned in the assignments still incomplete and told me that he would not be finishing the day's assignment. We called mom and he said he would accept the comsequences of not completing the assignment. Not exactly a parent-teacher conference, but there was a parent, some talking involved, and a teacher!
Parent, (smelling of alcohol), came in during class time, wanting to see her son, who’d been living with his dad, (with her agreement). I spoke with them in the corridor, outside a class full of students I was in the middle of teaching.
She then HANDCUFFED his wrist to hers, I think to make the point that she had legal custody. With her distraught 12 year old son yelling, along with me repeatedly requesting she take the handcuffs off, she eventually did remove them.
The boy immediately ran away & she just walked out, leaving the havoc she’d created, and finding her son, for the school to follow up.
I’d like to be able to say that was my most challenging day as a teacher of 39 years, but though it’s in the top 10, it wasn’t the worst.
BTW, I love your style and attitude!

A non-custodial mother with a court order barged in on another child’s conference, accused me of “gettin’ jiggy” with her man, and lunged at me across the seated couple and the table. Fortunately, the gentleman stood up and blocked her, then identified himself as a former Marine. I’m White. Does “gettin’ jiggy” mean having sex? ‘Cause that’s ridiculous. I’d never set eyes on the man and he was a no-show for his child’s conference earlier in the evening.
Another time, a couple grilled me about my academic qualifications to teach in their state, not to mention their highly gifted daughter! When I referred them to the principal with their concerns, they said they didn’t trust him because his GPA was a mere 2.85 in grad school. (Maybe they needed to go back to homeschooling? Their daughter was a solid average student and a sweetheart. I’ve no idea how they produced her. Maybe it was the French nanny?)

I had a parent banging on the table throughout our entire conference. The conference was during the day, and Mom picked up her son at the end of the day. She asked me about the conference because Dad didn't remember a thing. I told her about the banging. She apologized and told me her husband was a musician and owned a local music cafe/ recording studio. He was recording that afternoon, and his brain was rehearsing during the conference. I got one of the first cds from the recording session. Golden!

I was pregnant with my middle child during a ptc and the mom stopped me in the middle of discussing her child's failing grades and asked me if I had miscarriaged my baby bc I wasn't big enough.
    I laughed it off.
3 months later, a specialist told me my baby was going to die before I delivered or within hours and nothing could be done.
1 month after that, the baby improved and the doctors have no medical explanation.
The baby is now 6 and strong and healthy tho he will probably have issues in the future.
Footnote, I did not fail the child but I did want to send the mother back to kindergarten.

My son had this terribly issue with lying, it was a psychological issue we were getting him therapy for. When he would start a new grade I make sure his teachers all knew that he had a problem and that he would tell stories to get out of doing homework and turning in assignments. After 2 months of not hearing anything from the school, even after requesting updates myself, I would meet up at teacher meeting on a quarterly basis. Each time my son would be struggling and the teachers would be cross with me, as expected, but then tell me the reason why which would be some lie my son had told them. I remember one meeting where I specifically informed a teacher that we were in fact not homeless and living in a car. It wasn't until his senior year in high school where I was finally able to get the school/teachers on board with an auditing checklist so there we never a question on whether an assignment was due and turned in.

Oh do i have a good one for you!
Had a parent demand an appointment for a parent-teacher conference because their child wasn't doing great in my class. Just to put some context: In Germany, Religion is a subject you have to take. It's mandatory by law. It's mainly Christian, but other religions are taught as well. It's not like we are praying in class or anything. We teach about the religions. So, this child was failing this class hard. Completely refused to participate, not bringing their stuff, plain disrespectful behavior, name-calling other students. So I had sent a notification letter to the parent so she would be informed about the situation. They demanded that conference. So here we were.
This parent steped into the room and without even saying hello started yelling at me. Wanting to know what problem I have with their child, why I had the audacity to demand they do some parenting (I didn't demand anything), and so on. Yelled at me that I wasn't doing my job right, proceeded to tell me that Religion was very important to them at home which is why their child would have Confirmation that year. Went on to tell me that they were mortified that during the year of Confirmation, the children didn't get their lessons in Religion from a parson. And two sentences later told me that Religion wasn't as important and if I wouldn't let the child pass, they would remove them from class.
Let me tell you, staying professional in this situation was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my entire career. I have not a single doubt in my mind where this child got their behavior. Needless to say this conference was very unproductive, parent left without having discussed a real solution to the problem, child failed the class. So basically, a real waste of my time that left me traumatized for quite some time after that.

probably depends on the region in DE. in Bavaria the culture is super catholic i don't like that but hey ho. Back in my days we'd pray early the morning at school and then before dinner.. where are you based

    • @mybusylife2158
      @mybusylife2158 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@PHlophe based in the Frankfurt region. We don't pray with the children and are not allowed to perform any other kind of religious ritual on the regular. I'm of course allowed to teach them about different prayers and Psalms, but we are not actively praying, doing sermons or having any kind of Sunday service kind of lesson. But praying at the beginning of the school day and before dinner sounds very Bavarian 😁

I have so many stories, but here’s my favorite. While having a parent teacher conference, I was discussing with the parent that the child was often found with property that did not belong to her (the child was also habitually dishonest). During this conversation, the child walked over to my desk, opened my drawer, and took something out of it IN FRONT OF THE PARENT.
Not only did the parent not correct her or say anything about it, (I had to tell the child to please get out of my desk drawers), the parent suggested that we “change the subject” because what we were discussing was causing her daughter to “become upset.”
I was so irritated/disgusted that in a moment of (probably) unprofessionalism, I announced that the child needed to feel upset and refused to change the subject. The child was moved to a different classroom soon after.

They told me I was too young and didn't know what I was taking about when their child was failing because I was younger than them. I kindly told them my age, which was 8 years older than them and had been teaching for over 10 years. We are professionals who know what we are doing. Needless to say, they embarrassed themselves and said, ok I think we're done. I never heard from them again all year.... and their son failed and had to repeat 2nd grade.
