  • Long arm Jeep XJ rock crawling and XJ off roading Rio Puerco in NM. Long arm Jeep XJ off road rock crawling. Short arm and Long arm Jeep XJ's off roading 4 wheeling and rock crawling with Jeep JK's and WJ on tons. One of our close friends joined us with a Jeep WJ that has been modified and is now on one ton axles and 40" tires. We also had 2 Jeep JK's with us, one that was fairly stock and one with a fresh lift in it and was their first time taking it off road. As always we enjoyed putting our long arm jeep xj to the test and seeing what its capable of.

    I am in the market for new shocks and you can’t beat the price on Rusty’s Offroad shocks whats your opinion of them? I see the Silver XJ is running them. I’m in SoCal and play in the rocks but also like to try and go Baja style with my Toyota buddy’s, how are they at faster stuff? I have Bilstein but there to soft for the go fast stuff.

    • @SWActiveExplorers
      @SWActiveExplorers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We thought they where a bit on the stiff end for strictly crawling, they will work though. The rx200 and rx300 is designed for high speed driving such as jeep speed and other forms of desert racing. That being said if it's roughly half of what you do it could be right up your alley, just be sure you bump stop properly. We took them out and switched to the RX900 it's much less aggressive and bridges the gap between high speed shock and just mild off road shock. The RX900 is better for us as all we do is crawl. That jeep doesn't see over 25mph unless it's on prevent, it normally gets put in low range not long after hitting dirt and staying there until we are back to pavement.

      Straight axle all day. A wrangler is ultimately the best starting platform. It has straight axles and a real frame. The XJ is cheaper and has straight axles but they aren't as good as some wrangler axles and the XJ has a unibody and those suck. If you get really into it you may grow to hate the unibody. If your not gonna go crazy and XJ may be just fine.

    What tires are on the WJ?

    • @SWActiveExplorers

      The WJ had ProComp 40s on it if I remember correctly.

    • @DavidNJ1
      @DavidNJ1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SWActiveExplorers I think the WJ had the Clayton long arm. Were the tires the regular ProComp MT2 or the Super Sticky?
      Didn't using a 40" on the WJ severely limit compression travel?

    • @SWActiveExplorers
      @SWActiveExplorers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had thought the WJ suspension was a homemade setup but to be honest I'm not sure. It had the regular MT2 on it as it was also daily driven at the time. Yea that thing had very little up travel but a bunch of droop. The front hydraulic bump stops where only a half inch away from contacting at ride height so even just regular on road driving it would making a claping noise whenever the bump stop would touch the stike pad. The thing did really well off road though.

    Geez i just cant resist thinking how dumb this is. No regard for safety or the vehicles that you depend on to get back home.

    • @SWActiveExplorers
      @SWActiveExplorers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one that was laid on its side is a trail only rig that was towed out there and is intended for exactly that kind of off roading. The WJ and JK have cages for safety so there is that. In fact all of the rigs featured in this video where built specifically for rock crawling. We also don't rely on these vehicles to get us to work and we know what we are doing so there really isn't much risk at all and we have completely accepted the possibility of damaging the jeeps and are ok with it. Also we are literally across town from home and can simply tow them home if needed.

    • @senorconhuevos
      @senorconhuevos 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SWActiveExplorers understood. My comment stands, I will even add to it. There is a lack of skill. Ultimately its a team effort any safety measures on your equipment can easily be rendered useless if driver and/or spotter fail. Just like a firearm, ND's happen cause one of the 5 rules were not followed. Just be safe man.
