    Sorry, I assumed the missing bolt was causing the oil problem. Great video, good to show people, how a quick fix, like the person who attempted to fix a problem with liquid gasket before you, can cause all sorts of problems.

    Thanks for the video. This helped me immensely. After getting a broken ignition coil out I did my valve cover gasket bc its leaking into the No1, No3, No4 spark plug, 213,000 mi 08 Pontiac Vibe. My question is there not a pattern that you have to tighten to keep from smashing the gasket.

    • @thewrenchwoman
      @thewrenchwoman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Start from center and work out tightening slowly and don't tighten them all the way down at first. Make about 3 passes. They are small bolts and don't need much torque. Maybe 10 foot lbs. I highly recommend not using an impact unless you are very use to it.

    nice video but even valve cover bolts have a torque spec, and putting a little permagasket on the bottom of the new gasket will help keep it in place while you wiggle it on. If it's off and gasket comes out of the groove and it will leak big time, And then you have to redo the process

    simple and easy to do ... but think it over whether you are handy at it and whether you will ever do it again! You may sell the car and paying a mobile mechanic reassures a buyer. My 2000 Toyota Corolla with 300K miles had it done by a pro mechanic one time lately and it was done over 100K miles ago and the car will be sold in a year or so...

    You do need it in two spots though, at the seams right where the timing chain cover meets the head. Just two pea sized dabs.

    I'll be replacing the valve cover gasket in my '07 Vibe later this week; I noticed you left out a number of steps - did you do them off-camera, or just left them out? Specifically, you spent no time cleaning the underside of the valve cover, nor did you wipe down the mating surfaces on the head itself. I'll admit, when I've done valve cover (or head) gaskets in the past, I usually drain the oil, then flush some kerosene (or gunk motor flush - same thing) down the head to give a clean push to anything that's been 'stuck' in the valve cover section. (technically, in this one, it's not so much the 'valve' cover as the dual overhead cam cover, which is a mouthful)
    I do appreciate your going through the disassembly steps, so I have a better idea of where all the bolts and nuts are - I have oil leaking from both back corners of the valve cover.

    Excellent video. I am going to need help with mine. I think mine is not only having a valve cover gasket problem but possibly a valve guide seal leak. I got a used motor from a junkyard. Man went to jail because he crushed the car and kept no records so I don't know. The little engine has gone almost 60thousand miles but the spark plugs are now getting covered in stuff after three months. The black ignition coils wont stay down because the ten mm volts are stripped from having to get into it constantly. I had a flashing check engine light and now am broken down in a parking lot. The tailpipe did not have airflow and I could feel the misfire happening. This nonsense has been going on since it was installed in 2013. I have to buy additional oil quarts to add to keep the oil level where it should be. The problem though is that the more I have to add oil the more fouled the plugs get.

    • @seanlacroix
      @seanlacroix 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you got a shitty engine from the scrap yard. Unfortunately you end up with other people's lack of maintenance when doing that. Also who knows how long the engine Sat with no fluids in it causing seals and gaskets to dry out.

    My woman’s car is an 03 Pontiac Vibe. I got the code for cylinder 4 misfire. I started with the spark plugs. Just got done replacing all 4 of those. Took it for a spin and I can tell it’s still misfiring. My next step is going to be the coil packs. I noticed oil on a couple of the spark plugs. I’m working with a budget tho and hope it’s the coil pack. But I know the valve cover gasket needs to be replaced because of the oil on the spark plugs

    • @ChadWilliamsFixesAll
      @ChadWilliamsFixesAll  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a buddy that can help you, you can test the coil for spark by removing it and putting an old spark plug in the bottom of it and put it close to a ground of the car. Then have your buddy turn over the key. If you see spark, then you know the coil is good. Just be extremely careful because that spark can hurt. I know from experience

    I am using oil like crazy. My mechanic says it's the valve cover gasket.
    But he says, you need a little gasket maker stuff in some corners where there is a seam. Is this not the case?
    He says that is a big reason for leaks, because these seams leak.

    • @ChadWilliamsFixesAll

      Sometimes on these engines, the timing chain tensioner can go bad, causing slack in the chain. You can get a slapping noise from the top guide if that is the case. Just throwing out a possible issue. Hope it helps!

    Just an FYI on the use of gasket maker. Our 2012 Ford Focus leaked oil like a sieve from the valve cover. Replaced the gasket twice, followed all the torque specs, still leaked. Then a mechanic friend suggested that there was probably a machining imperfection that was causing the issue meaning the rubber gasket couldn't form a tight enough seal, so he suggested using a thin layer of gasket maker to provide additional coverage. It's been about 5K miles since I did that and no leaks. Wouldn't do this as a matter of course but who wants to spend their weekend replacing expensive engine parts just so a $20 gasket can seat correctly?
    We also have a 2005 Vibe and let me tell you, working on the Vibe compared to the Focus is night and day. Takes me a quarter of the time to do the same job on the Vibe because it's so DIY-friendly. The Focus is just a cramped, confusing mess.

    • @seanlacroix
      @seanlacroix 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can't compare a focus with a vibe/matrix. Toyota is a way better built product with tighter specs on the valve cover. Focus' are pure garbage disposable cars. There's a reason Ford stopped making them and Toyota still uses the same 1.8l engine they've been using for years and years

      Hey! Thanks for watching! So, this is the quick attach impact driver from Black and Decker. I can switch between drill, impact, and other tools with the same base. Overall, it has lasted really well. But, I would only recommend for light jobs. The impact driver isn't very strong, so I only use it in certain situations. Is your vehicle always in cold weather? Are you using the correct weight oil?

    Is this known as the head gasket? I have a 03 XRS 2zz engine, my mechanic quoted me 2500 . It's leaking oil not that much yet and I can't seem to find the leak

      Hey Johnny. No, the valve cover gasket isn't consider the head gasket. The head gasket sits between the engine block and the head. This gasket is between the head and valve cover.

      The 2zz engines were made by Yamaha and are great engines. Stick to the 1zz by Toyota and it'll last for years and years with little maintenance.
