Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix Transmission Filter and Fluid Change

  • Changing the transmission filter and fluid in a 2005 Pontiac Vibe. Similar to to the 2003-2008 Pontiac Vibes and Toyota Matrix. The one in the video is a 2 wheel drive, the all wheel drive version has a different transmission due to the addition of a transfer case.
    This video highlights key parts of the fluid filter change. Aim to help those that change their own engine oil, to better understand the simplicity of changing the tranny filter and fluid. Video also highlights the importance of this often overlooked automotive servicing.
    Correction: In the first steps, use the pan drain plug to remove accessible oil. Omitted this important step when putting the video together.

      Problem with utube is any well intentioned amateur can post... Also once again another video that neglects to mention you need to flush out the torque converter otherwise you're 3+ quarts of really expensive amsoil is mixed with possibly about 3 - 4 quarts of dirty fluid - there are a few vids showing the cooling line trick to FULLY push the old fluid out of the entire transmission. Doing this job properly should take about 6-7 quarts - guarantee within the week fluid will be dark again because the cleaning agents in the new fluid will breakdown the buildup in the trans and transfer it to the fluid. Yuck !!! Giving this a 1 out of 5 stars - Sorry, just being honest.

      @@DTA-me3kv It's way cleaner to pull the plug first then the outer bolts, you get one stream like an oil change not a multitude of little streams splashing all over the place as they land in the catch pan, And elevating the catch pan closer to the transmission can help catch some of the splashy bits.

    Very good quality video with excellent audio. My Haynes manual also says 3.2 quarts to fill but the volume you state in the video must be for a dump and fill from the plug, not dropping the pan. I measured well over 4 qts out so I put 4 qts back in. After checking level I found I needed to add an additional 5 ounces. (see 136dogs2 comment below) I used T-IV fluid which the Toyota dealer was selling for $5.95/qt. Beat Amazon surprisingly, even with Prime free shipping.

    I have the exact same car, exact mileage and similar scenario as a 2nd owner. transmission fluid was changed at 60,000 and hasnt been since. Now it has 182k. I've never had any trouble whatsoever. I have been told by numerous mechanics not to change it. It would cause more damage than help. that is what I decided to do. I checked the fluid and it is still red and does not smell. It has never leaked a drop either. Should I change it? Thoughts? Would love to hear from the OP.

    Great video. Nice level of detail and good pointers. I've got an '05 Vibe that I want to change the filter and fluid on, and this video will surely be useful.
    One suggestion: In my experience with dropping the transmission pan on an '01 Sienna with a very similarly designed 18-bolt pan, draining the fluid via the drain plug beforehand results in less splatter and better control of where the fluid ends up. ATP's automatic transmission filter kit for the first generation Matrix/Vibe comes with a crush washer to facilitate this.

      Was used to working on on older GM / Ford transmissions, almost all are plug-less pans. Yes, use the plug to remove the accessible oil, the plug is recessed into the pan, so the pan will hold a small amount of oil to be aware of when the pan bolts are removed.

    You knew what you were doing! I just recently changed my trans fluid and filter. I had to drop the pan -- twice! The first time I put the pan back on, the gasket wouldn't stay put and I had a slight leak. So I had to drop the pan again today, clean out the pan, and position bolts in the holes across the pan prior to installing the gasket -- much better results! I did replace the filter the first time, and double checked my installation afterwards. After this trans flush, I won't be needing to service my trans anytime soon! Also I won't be using the drain plug anymore.

  • @lustderf
    @lustderf  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Even dropping the pan and filter its not a complete change, oil remains in the torque converter, internal plumbing, and if equipped oil cooler. Unlike the engine were oil pools in the crankcase, the transmission has lots of places that keep fluid form draining all the way back to the pan.

    I would change it, the Vibe Matrix owners manual says to change transmission fluid every 60k miles or 45k if you tow. Might get by with just changing fluid, but at your mileage dropping the pan will allow better assessment of the transmission. Inspecting any part of the car can never hurt, may provide insight into future maintenance / repairs.

    They say a hot fluid check is more accurate possibly because hot means operating temperature which on our RAV4 is specified to be between 158°F to 176°F. There is no specified temperature range that I am aware of for a cold fluid check. My guess would be room temperature?
    It's important to remember that the temperature gauge for your engine is not much help in determining ATF temperature. Usually a 20 minute drive will do the trick just driving around town or varying speeds on country roads. An all uphill drive would likely overheat the transmission and an all downhill drive likely won't even get it to operating temperature especially in the winter. I have a Scangauge in our vehicle to monitor ATF temperature and this is what I have found to be true. Also just idling from a cold start takes 35 minutes in our RAV4 to get the ATF to 158°F.

    there is a reason why its "illegal" to go by fluid color. Transmission fluid is a detergent. if you run brand new fluid for 30 mins in your car, it will look "brownish" if you check it after that because of the chemical makeup of the fluid. Going off fluid color holds no value at all.

    If you are getting a code related to the transmission, its hard to say what might be the cause. Changing the filter and fluid would allow you to see the bottom of the transmission. Aside from that I would take it to someone who would be able to better diagnose the code you are getting.

    Have not had that issue. Would suggest visiting genvibe.com and posting issue, someone on the site may have a possible solution. From what I have read, it could be anything from valve, piston wear, plug issue etc. The sound of air leaking would also include the possibility that the intake manifold has a crack or gasket issue allowing air to enter the cylinder without passing through the Mass Air Flow sensor.

    • @lustderf
      @lustderf  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amount of fluid going back into the transmission depends on a few variables, filter changed, did you drop the pan, or just drain from the pan plug. Easiest way to determine fluid amount, if the transmission was at the full mark when starting, measure what is removed. The add that amount back. Run the vehicle to get a hot reading on the dipstick, then add small amounts until you get the correct level on dipstick. Unlike the engine oil pan (open space) the transmission has many specialized fluid paths that hold fluid affecting the fluid amount used during a drain and fill. 4qts is a good starting point, 4.4qts is listed in the manual. Overfilling the transmission can cause damage, if you go over the mark you will have to drain some fluid.

      According to the 2005 Pontiac Vibe owner's manual, the 1.8L (Code 8) holds 3.2 quarts, the 1.8L (Code 8) with AWD holds 3.1 quarts, and the 1.8L (Code L) holds 4.3 quarts. Use only T-IV Automatic Transmission Fluid (GM Part No. U.S. 88900925, in Canada 22689186).

    • @lustderf
      @lustderf  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tobias Sinclair Either way works, I swapped more transmission fluid during the next engine oil change 3-5k miles. Figured I had to jack the car up to change the engine oil, plus the remaining old tranny oil would have time to thoroughly mix.

    • @doug33anderson
      @doug33anderson 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tobias Sinclair no. you will never get all the old trans fluid out that way the new and old will mix in the pan. the only way to get all the old out is to flush remove cooler line and run engine old will pump out add new fluid during drain until clear/clean fluid is seen out of cooler line.

    • @doug33anderson

      line going from trans to radiator. and either will work i prefer the return line (upper one on mine) so you can flush cooler also. use clear tube and feed trans while it is pumping out. my vibe used 2 gallons to flush until red clear came out (clear hose)

I just flushed the pan, and before new atf went in I felt that the car was a bit harsh to change gears. But even with new fluid in did not change much. So I just found out about this Lubegard platinum put in 4oz, slightly better, then today another 1oz I put in. Let's see how it will behave on the high way.

    When I asked my garage to change, when the manual suggests, they say "if it's not causing any problems, I wouldn't mess with it..." It now has 226,000. and has never been changed. After watching you video, I'm going to find me a new garage! My question is: Should I, at this high mileage, ask the new guy to change?

      +Patrick C I have an 08 Vibe with 245,000 miles. Original Transmission fluid. It clearly says on the dipstick - under normal driving conditions, transmission fluid should never need to be changed. Mine is shifting fine, and still has a red look to in on the stick, however I am going to do a change soon.

    Thanks Fred, it's very helpful tutorial vid. My toyota matrix 2009 has 108k km. What is cleaning solution you use for the inside pan? Two thumbs up.

      +Chuyen Do I used aerosol can of carb cleaner, but any general purpose solvent would work, paint thinner, kerosene. Since the bottom of the pan is painted, want to steer away from acetone or other solvents that might hurt the finish.
