Allison 5 to 6 speed conversion

  • I have an 04.5 Duramax with the Allison 5spd. I was tired of my mileage dropping and temperatures rising if I went 75mph or more.
    I couldn't find any good videos of the install or results other than 3 from Duramax Tuner themselves and one random guy in his garage. So I did this video to hopefully answer any questions others might have about the install or visible results from someone else.
    So I installed Duramax Tuners 6spd conversion kit. Very easy install, about 2hrs, and so far a lot nicer ride
    Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe.

      That's exactly what I heard also. Transmission is the same, valve body is all that's different. Wish they would have done the 6pd from the start.

    I thought hard about this a couple years ago for my 02. By the time I figured up any fuel $ savings vs cost I don’t see a break even point.
    I drive all over the country towing a TT, and it just doesn’t show me a savings or gain. After doing the math, I would be better served with a newer truck with a 6 already in it. Or an engine/trans swap to newer, lower mileage when the time comes.
    Each to their own though I say.

    • @jacobellis8135
      @jacobellis8135 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The math I did showed about a 2 cent per mile savings. That means I'd have to drive my 02 LB7 for about 100k miles in 6th gear just to break even.

    • @360plussynthetics
      @360plussynthetics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I admit my mpg didn't change much, and of course this all depends on day to day conditions. But it is nicer to drive at the lower rims at highway speeds.

    That’s mind blowing, how do you make a 6 speed transmission but only let it run 5 speeds from the factory?

    • @360plussynthetics
      @360plussynthetics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My thoughts exactly. Why not do it from the start..

    • @megastick9324
      @megastick9324 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They didn’t have the HP from the factory on the first LB7s to tow in double OD. After they upped the HP past a certain number , they then changed the TCM and 6th was available. The early LB7s didn’t have the OD lockout either until 03.
      Same idea with the first Harley 6 speeds, they weren’t available in the 88ci but when they went to 96ci they had six speeds.
      The 88 would lug too much in an OD, and everyone want OD, so they had to bump the HP to make it usable.

      Ya most automatic transmissions use more than 1 set of clutches to make each ratio so it engages 2 different sets to ad another overdrive gear I don't know if they figured it out later or what but it would have been cool if they did from the get go

      Duramax tuner supplies it just look it up and another thing that doesn’t help your current situation is your gear ratio and tire size. Depending on what those are contributes to either the higher or lower rpm’s at highway speeds.

    Great video. Have you towed or added power back yet, will it stay in sixth while slightly loaded. I assume LLY Engine temps rising is the head issue? Not normal in my LB7, only time is climbing mountain at 70mph with 8,000 horse trailer in tow. Climbs to 210 degrees and holds up till the top which is 1500ft rise in a few miles.

    • @360plussynthetics

      I have not towed with it yet. I am back up on my high performance tune though and it feels great. Excellent speed pick up when trying to pass from 65 to 80mph smooth and quick. And yes, temperatures, rpm, and general engine noise were the main reasons for me installing the kit. For me, anything over 70mph and 2100rpm, my temperatures would rise and not come back down. Now I can do 78mph and still be at 1900rpm.

Sounds quieter, feels smoother, and temperatures don't rise as high even when doing 75 for long distances. I was in south Texas and temperatures were in the 70s. Only thing I'm not impressed with is my mpgs only were in the 18s. I was totally expecting 19-20s. I'm wondering if its because its winter temps/fuel or my tunes from ATP are set up for a 5spd for fueling etc and isnt expecting a 6th gear. I'm going to call #duramaxtuner and see what they think.

      @360plussynthetics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I honestly don't remember exactly how much I put back in. I believe it was around 11-12qts. But I do have the PPE deep pan also. Yes, AMSOIL does have approved fluid for the Allison. Depending on your model year and what it calls for, we have the regular ATF, which is like dex3. The fuel efficient ATF is dex6. And torqdrive is a reverse engineered Transynd(TES-295). Here's a link to the trans fluids. www.amsoil.com/c/automatic-transmission-fluid/20/?zo=1382872

    • @360plussynthetics
      @360plussynthetics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also. It doesn't take any more or less fluid due to the valve body being changed. The valve body is the same between the two. It just has an extra solenoid to port the fluid differently. So if you have a stock pan, it'll take the same amount of fluid as before.

Gears 1-5 are the same so there's no gain for city driving where you don't get into 6th for extended periods. Cost being worth it is subjective. Before with my 5spd, I couldn't go over 70 without engine temps rising, 3200rpms, mpgs dropping, and more noise. Now the rpms stay around 1800 at 75mph and everything else sounds better.
