I have to admit when I first saw pop punk cover, my initial thought was "Aren't the All American Rejects already pop punk?" Now I see what you mean, and this is an awesome version
I had the same thought. Maybe a bit more alt-rock than pop-punk. To me this is just a different interpretation of a song that could be considered pop-punk anyway.
Had the same exact though and then the same exact reaction after I heard it!
This brings up a really good discussion. I was initially thinking the same thing and came here to comment such.
But then I remembered something. I think AAR are classified as power pop with pop punk tendencies. Closer to fountains of Wayne than say new found glory, but not out of place.
@@DaveKratter I actually always felt like All American Rejects were like the best possible version of a power pop band. Like if The Click Five had been just a few notches better at songwriting.

@@AlexMelton once I heard it, I was looking for it in the later parts but I think you're right, it's easy to overplay. It made my bass ears happy. Great rendition. Better than the original imo.

I drove down to Orlando House of Blues from Charleston to see some band I knew and All American Rejects were there as well right when Swing Swing dropped. I liked the song but their whole set rocked. When he sang Last Song I thought he was going to pop a lung he poured so much into it. One of the best performances I’ve seen.
It was Riddlin Kids. That’s why I went down there. You can see how much an impact they were took me a day to remember who the headliner was. AR was an opener.
The group chant part with pop punk flavoring was too good.

I have to say that this came out exactly the right moment for me. I've been listening to it quite a bit since it came out a few weeks ago. Unfortunately I spent 2 and a half years wallowing in self hatred and pity over what turned out to be nobody worth my time. For almost all of the time I was with them and those 2 and a half years of hell I put myself through I never let myself be angry with them. Covid didn't help but it also didn't cause my problems. It only exacerbated the issues I had with socializing and talking about my problems. And then when they showed up at my place in the middle of the night while I was trying to sleep, and that shattered it all for me. This rendition came out shortly afterwards. Turns out that I had allot to be angry about. Also turns out that I probably should have put this song on my playlist way back then. Well music was one of those things that I couldn't deal with because it reminded me too much of them. It was to the point that I drove to work in complete silence, no radio and no playlist. It took me almost a year to start listening again. Now here I am writing my own music again and it's thanks to people like you that I feel like I can do it and I want to put my music out there. Next up for me is getting a midi controller, though I think I'm going to start with a keyboard because I don't know the first thing about drums and this is more for composition anyways.

Fun story I’m sure most won’t believe (but it’s true). I went to high school with AAR, and right when they signed with their first label, I auditioned and became their drummer. Unfortunately the members at the time got in a fight and briefly broke up the band and I never got to play a show with them. They restructured, dropped an original band mate, and hired a studio drummer on the road several months later.
And that’s the (abridged) story of how I was All American Rejects’ drummer for 48 hours without ever playing a show.
The man does not miss.
