    I’ve used a similar 2nd gen Scarlett USB interface in my home studio ever since my 5 year old Safire fried itself (not uncommon in some FireWire interfaces). After using it almost a year I can say it is a solid device. It has clean sound on the preamps and the monitors are plenty loud. The driver/control software it uses is low-overhead and easy to adjust. It may not have the features or specs of some super high end gear, but it was reasonably priced. I would recommend it to most folks

    Hello, just to double check, when you set Monitor Controls to one of those settings, for example, ALL, in the Focusrite Control software, that maps the monitor knob in the front panel to control ALL the line outputs?

    I occasionally get a quiet intermittent click at 44.1kHz or 48kHz if clock source is not set to ADAT. This sometimes happens when switching to different sample rates (or if I load a project that differs to the last) the clock source loses synchronization to the the external ADAT device (assuming you had the extra inputs connected could be worth checking?) I'm using a much older focusrite (18i6) audio interface with an Octopre and just a thought...
    I am really interested in this one as my last one has served me so well for quite a few years.
    Do you think you are still getting super low latency even if using USB 3.0?
    Thanks for the excellent review as ever!

    Could I connect my Bose subwoofer via the optical out to add it to my monitors?
    I just added a vintage 1970s Neumann U87 to my collection. Now I'm trying to ensure I produce the smoothest sound I can without getting muddy.
    I'm leaning toward either SSL or Focusrite for an interface that doesn't cause the "clicks" during playback that a lot of interfaces suffer. I also need clear inputs with great preamps (at least until I find the right preamp to replace my PreSonus tube).
    Ill be switching from my AB 1818VSL and I'd like to setup as follows:
    I need at least 2 XLR mic inputs with ¼" option (to have a mic XLR cable always plugged in and a ¼" always plugged in so that I can run SPDIF out to my Focusrite VRM then ¼" out from my VRM back into the interface so that I don't have to keep plugging and unplugging my headphones everytime I wanna use the VRM).
    Output:
    •USB3 to (Custom Win7 Studio PC)
    •L/R ¼" (to Mackie monitors)
    •OPTICAL OUT (to Bose subwoofer)
    •MIDI I/O (to MPC/Motif/Axiom)
    •SPDIF OUT to Focusrite VRM
    •Headphones (preferably 2×)
    I'll also be running a Tascam FW1082 control via firewire as my mixing console in Nuendo; along with StudioOne, Waves, Reason, Acid Pro, and other DAWs from time to time.

    Got 2nd gen. 18i20 for the studio, and 2i4 for live/outside stuff. Have always worked really well, stable and with low latency. Couple of things like the higher ADAT resolution seems nice enough, but don't see myself going out of my way to update. "Air" is kinda anti-climactic, after all the hype on first the Clarett range, and now here. A worthy inclusion/feature, but not hype-worthy.
    If they really wanted to impress me, they should've made the headphone outputs freely assignable in relation to the output routing, like it was on my Steinberg interface. Having them hardwired to output sets 7-8 and 9-10 is a real waste.

  • @rdean150
    @rdean150 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ive got the 2nd gen 18i20 and my setup is indeed very similar to yours here. I use both the ADAT & SPDIF through Expert Sleepers. I stopped doing fx send/return though bc it was too easy to get feedback loops if I changed the configuration without being super careful. Anyway, the dual ADAT is a huge selling point for me. And I'm glad to hear that the inputs (and hopefully headroom) have improved. But apparently Windows 7 isn't supported? That's a deal breaker. Will have to keep an eye on that though and see if it is technically compatible just not officially supported.

    • @ricsim78
      @ricsim78 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can run up to 8 studio monitors at the same time. People hooked up to the audio interface, like in the Matrix? 😁 You can hook up to 8 mono sources or 4 stereo sources through the preamps, but you can expand that by either hooking up an audio mixer, or by adding a preamp (like the Focusrite Octo-Pre), which gives you 8 more mono or 4 more stereo hookups for instruments. I am not sure how to answer your click track question, there are two headphone outputs and you do not want to send a click track through monitors (or the crowd/recording will hear it too).

      You would be better off buying a Focusrite Octo-Pre or Presonus Digi-Max (but stick with Focusrite because they are made by the same company, so will likely work better together). No reason to have two audio interfaces when a preamp addon would give you more channels. The Quantum 2626 is a step up from the 18i20, in sound quality for sure, but having both would be a waste of money IMO and you would be hard pressed to hear the sound quality difference unless you A/B them.

The solo is meant for a vocal mic, this can run up to 4 stereo sources (more with the digital inputs or with external preamps). You can also use it in different modes and run up to 8 studio monitors (4 stereo pairs) through it.

    First off, this is my 1st interface. I’ll be using it to record an acoustic drum kit. I got mine open box (returned, or something) Anyway, when i plug in the usb, it says “locked”. Before I go any further, is this something I need to change? On the vid Locked was mentioned, but this vid seems to be geared or more advanced users. Hopefully someone can help me out here. Thanks.

    Hmmmm... I still have the old Focusrite saffire Pro 40... and its Firewire... which is a growing problem. I am struggling with it because it appears the latest updates of Windows 10 has been causing some performance problems (I have found a SEVERE limitation with the latest update of VCVRack for example) , and no one has bothered updating the old drivers for quite some time! :( I DO find it surprising that Focusrite has been stingy on ADAT I/O in its latest releases, what with the boon of Eurorack mixed analog / digital setups, Why induce that limit??? (Ableton is about to release an intriguing new pack "CV tools" for example! sounds promising!).. I am in a very similar situation.. I have a Neutron and a small Eurororack case and I value the ability to have 8 ADAT in and 8 ADAT out for CV signals. You mention that its "good to have a USB C cable"... could be a problem on Windows 10! I wonder how well does it perform in Windows USB 3 setup?

    Functionally, this seems pretty similar to the 2nd Gen. Scarlett's, with the big difference being a move to USB-C. I have the 2nd Gen. 6i6 and it is a good, solid performer, although while the preamps are decent, they could be better. Unless you are on a budget and need lots of I/O, those looking at the 18i20 3rd Gen might want to consider looking at the Clarett series, which have better preamps than the Scarlett's.

    • @ricsim78
      @ricsim78 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the 3rd gen, they are much closer than they used to be. The Clarett has better components, no question, but you can do the Black Lion mod on the Scarlett and it will blow away the Clarett in recording sound quality and playback. Without A/Bing them, you would likely have a hard time picking which is which in a blind test. The Clarett has a little more of an open sounding sound stage with more dynamic range, but the Scarlett has a smoother, darker, and less open sound stage. The Clarett is dated more, though.

      Clarett 8 Pre USB. Digital conversion is night and day between the two as the Clarett line is more on the higher end side closer to the Red range. I own the 1st gen Scarlett 18i20 for my keyboards, The Forte Apogee like interface and the Clarrett 8pre Thunderbolt interface. The Clarett is on par with the Focusrite Forte in terms of sound quality and digital conversion. They have a much more open sound stage 3d effect. The Scarlett sounds more narrow and boxy sounding.

    • @jimmorrisoncold
      @jimmorrisoncold 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I differ from the first reply. Its simple like this: Scarlett : smooth sound, dark sound (good for bright sounding gear) . Clarett: more brightness , clarity (if you have bright gear can sound harsh) the clarett not have the smooth sound of the Scarlett . I prefer Scarlett less resolution but a more vintage tone it's very difficult to sound harsh with this converter , hear it when he plays the synth with reverb...Vintage tone. The Saffire and Scarlett shines on keys and drums because their smooth and dark color.
