listening to this, it makes sense why Spencer sounded a bit croaky in the screams, emulating Chris' exact screams which he probably isnt used to doing. but he has vastly improved on his own
I like chris because hes just a "Heavier" singer like a deeper tone and more brutal screams but Spence has a higher range and has improved so much since their first album that it makes up for the Mediocre singing on the first releases
I think it's obvious that the debut Periphery had to have no vocals at all, and not just because I heard all the demos of all tracks back in 2008 and got used to the instrumental versions. The debut album was a lot about tech-y and groovy things that already sounded outstanding without the vox. You can listen to this album for months being amazed by its complexity and melody. The vocals performed on this album by ANYONE would be just overflowing and redundant. Both Chris and Spencer have gained more vocal skills through time, and Spencer is fantastic on Periphery II, just as Barretto on the Monuments' Amanuensis, so, I think there's nothing to be regretful about at the moment.
Funny thing is, Baretto could wreck this song nowadays. Go listen to I the Destroyer by Monuments... That high note in the last chorus, same exact note as the end of Ragnarok
if you listen to the latest periphery stuff with spencer you´ll notice how much he has improved. i employ everybody to listen to their cover on metallica´s "one". he sing and screams very good in it. i think his high singing range really complements their songs. it adds a more dreamy atmosphere.
You can really hear the baritone strain on the highs in the chorus, haha xD Dude's improved immensely though, his vocals for Ever Forthright and Friend For A Foe are unbelievable. Spencer and Casey definitely fit this band more, but neither of them would be able to do what this guy does in EF. Truly a unique and versatile musician
I am a big fan of Spencer, but I have to admit that Chris sounds better to my ears on this track. I mean, it makes sense, this was probably written with his vocals in mind. In the scheme of things, I think there couldn't be a more fitting frontman for Periphery than Sponce, but Chris is definitely a beast on the mic.
The drums were played by Matt on an electric kit hooked up to the Superior 2.0 samples. Matt basically took what Misha had already programmed and improved on it :)
In my opinion, there are some songs I prefer with Chris' vocals, some with Casey's, and some with Spencer's vocals. This is one of the ones where I think Spencer just kills it. The Walk, on the other hand, Chris owns it, and Icarus Lives! is all Casey territory. Again, just my opinion, but I feel like Spencer is the most well-rounded vocalist Periphery have had to date.
I preferred Chris Barretto's vocals over the current. Saw them live in Fels Point and they were freaking amazing. Anyone know if Chris is doing any current projects?
Also, it's only a matter of time until the latter half of the story is revealed when the new material which Chris is recording is unveiled to the world, and shits down on everybody from the heavens. End thread.
He's alright. I just prefer Spencer's range. I saw them live during summer slaughter and he was flawless. He definitely picked up throughout the years.
@yeahyeahyeahz2345 From Bulb's formspring: The 3rd day of our first tour with him, he met our label heads for the first time as they invited us with the other Sumerian bands to a get together in their house. Even though he had a girlfriend (of about 4 years no less), he was making out with this random drunk chick who was there, and as we tried to leave, he asked for 15 more minutes which we gave him. After about 10 he came running back and said "drama, drama, we gotta go"
I know that they kept a lot of harmonies from Chris and some of the other vocalists for Racecar, but did they do the same for other songs on the album? The ones here sound almost, if not, identical.
Now, that i come to think of it: who did write all these vocals on periphery?? Also, first time i heard anyone but sponce on a periphery-song and i have to say: he is on a completely different level than this chris guy, i don't get everyone complaining about spencer, he is da shizzle on all of periphery and the new shit's gonna be even better!!
Although Barretto has a good voice, I think that it was a good choice to bring in Sotelo instead. Both of them have voices well suited for the band, but Barretto doesn't have the range that Sotelo does. There are parts of this song where Barretto's voice just doesn't go high enough where Sotelo's does.
I had the chance to hang out with Chris and the rest of Ever Forthright on a date in NJ with Structures, and all of them were nothing but respectful musicians. Chris was the farthest thing from a douche bag.
Yup, it tops at a B5 - tough stuff - I can barely hit it without it sounding strained. Spencer of course has a monstrous range - so he easily hits it - the bastard
@JonathanChunPrevenge People need to stop putting personal issues at the forefront of writing music. Especially in this style of music/scene where people seem to feel the need to constantly interact with their 'idols'. Chris writes fucking bad ass melodies and vocal parts. I care not if he had sex with whoever, we're all human afterall and i'm glad he's not trying to put on a front like other artists, who appoint false impressions upon their fans for their own personal benefit and publicity.
Chris has such a generic rock clean voice. Spencer's clean vocals are unmatched I'm afraid. Chris' screams are pretty good though, better than some of Spencer's early stuff in all honesty.
The cleans are pre cringe compared to Spencer's spot on cleans. But the screams are much more rounded and less raspy. Easier for the ears to listen to, but losses its uniqueness.
@MojoJojo378 *implore, *sings very well. I agree, that was a really, really good cover. I like Spencer's singing too, it's nice to hear more clean vocals in metal. I think that more restrained use of screaming heightens its effect. However, Spencer's vocals tend to be a little thin, reminiscent of typical metalcore vocals imo. Spencer kinda puts me on and turns me off at the same time, it's weird.
Idk i really like Spencer's clean vocals sooo much more... Spencer is what drew me to Periphery.. although Chris is awesome to idk if it would have appealed to me as much with him.. I like Chris's other 2 bands.. instead of one we get 3 awesome bands out of the deal with chris leaving
I like both of them, but what you need to understand about people is that they inevitably have something called "preferences." I still like Sotelo but I prefer Baretto's voice, because I just think it's better, and understandably some people won't like one of them or the other. I, as a vocalist, think Sotelo's screaming was absolute shit on the first album and his singing voice was piercingly annoying. He's good now, but I still think Baretto's voice is just nicer sounding. Everyone's different.
I don't know. I won't hate on any vocalist they've had, but I've really come to like Spencer's style. I think he suits the music perfectly. Chris is excellent, but his clean vocals, to me, seem a bit too "run of the mill" or something.
Everybody: *Chris is better* *No! Spencer is!* Me: *Just happy that they kicked Chris out because now we have a Monuments with Chris and Spencer Periphery is good as well*
Singers in order of goodness: 1. Casey - Large range and killer harsh vocals. 2. Spencer - Largest range, best clean vocals, harsh vocals are meh. 3. Chris - Range is barely large enough, cleans are okay, harsh vocals are pretty good. 4. Jake - No.
wow, so many people hating on you here, for this. Whats wrong with these people? I prefer chris as well, I just like his voice better. Reminds me of chris cornell honestly.
Laughing at Jakes hair
Jesus Christ Trent Reznor yepp!
It's not just a phase, mom!
Emo style
Love this version, but I'm glad we have Spencer in periph, and Chris is monuments.
aaaaaand he's gone.
listening to this, it makes sense why Spencer sounded a bit croaky in the screams, emulating Chris' exact screams which he probably isnt used to doing. but he has vastly improved on his own
jake kinda looks like markiplier from that angle lmao
From what Bulb says about Chris' behaviour, I'm very happy that Spencer is in the band.
I like chris because hes just a "Heavier" singer like a deeper tone and more brutal screams but Spence has a higher range and has improved so much since their first album that it makes up for the Mediocre singing on the first releases
WOw this guy isnt half bad. i really like it, but Spencer has that periphery look and his clean vocals are just there
Dominick Guerra casey is a lot better
Matt Magee gross
ROPE IN YOUR EYEEEEESSSS!!!!!
Barreto's fantastic.. what a voice!
I don’t think I could associate him with Periphery, but his voice is phenomenal. I would love to hear some of his other stuff.
Both Chris and Spencer have gained more vocal skills through time, and Spencer is fantastic on Periphery II, just as Barretto on the Monuments' Amanuensis, so, I think there's nothing to be regretful about at the moment.
Have you heard Juggernaut Alpha and Omega yet? Spencer is such a damn beast now. He gets better every album!
Kyledrownstoday Yeah, I've been listening to it for like a month already, Spencer is at the tops for sure.
Kyledrownstoday have you heard " the amanuensis"? from monuments? ;) chris in that album is THE VOCAL
+fabricio laurini yeah dude, I fucking love that CD. I can't wait for their next release.
in my opinion the best album in 2014! that fucking riff and sound from browne are not of this planet... he's style is different from others
2017 y sonando increíble!!
2022 y no deja de sonar increíble
Funny thing is, Baretto could wreck this song nowadays. Go listen to I the Destroyer by Monuments...
That high note in the last chorus, same exact note as the end of Ragnarok
If you could find a vocalist with Spencer's singing and Barretto's screams that'd be perfect.
Eddie Vazquez have you heard onuments? chris' new band hes improved and his singing is probably better than sp3ncers
Eddie Vazquez Go check some Monuments with Barretto, and even some live shows. I heard him live last month, he is incredible.
I know this comment is ancient, but Spencer’s vocals now aren’t far off these kinds of screams
Kyle Anderson
lol what Barreto's voice is perfect as it is
I was bound to be in Monuments
I can't believe I haven't heard this yet! This is pretty good!
Disclaimer: may not contained all band members as advertised.
Only half ;)
I really wish there was more of P1 available with Chris' takes.
if you listen to the latest periphery stuff with spencer you´ll notice how much he has improved. i employ everybody to listen to their cover on metallica´s "one". he sing and screams very good in it.
i think his high singing range really complements their songs. it adds a more dreamy atmosphere.
great fucking song! thank you Chris Barretto for dropping these vocals, definitly perfect for this song. hell yeah.
Gotta give props to this Chris guy.. Good cover man!
Chris was the original singer in Periphery or, well, one of them.
+(^w^) / I know I was just being sarcastic.
@lamerit it's on the second page, "Light (with vocals!)"
love it one of the best , imo
Dude I remember hearing this on a Sumerian compilation way back in like 2010, I think it was the summer sampler 09.
The drums were played by Matt on an electric kit hooked up to the Superior 2.0 samples. Matt basically took what Misha had already programmed and improved on it :)
Don't forget about the versions with Jake, which are freaken awesome.
@SuperchargedXX Thank you... the man switches bands so fast I can't be expected to keep this shit up to date. XD
I love that version 😍 Chris my afro baby 😝
Woah when did Keith Urban play for Periphery?
thanks for uploading
Yes he can, have you ever seen them live?
In my opinion, there are some songs I prefer with Chris' vocals, some with Casey's, and some with Spencer's vocals. This is one of the ones where I think Spencer just kills it. The Walk, on the other hand, Chris owns it, and Icarus Lives! is all Casey territory. Again, just my opinion, but I feel like Spencer is the most well-rounded vocalist Periphery have had to date.
Chris is full of win, he has a very soulful singing voice, and ground-breaking growl!
Have you heard Chris' new project (Ever Forthright)? That guy is good :)
End thread.
love this!
He's alright. I just prefer Spencer's range. I saw them live during summer slaughter and he was flawless. He definitely picked up throughout the years.
The end is amazing. :D
@ravenFF32 agree
he sounds really good
@yeahyeahyeahz2345 From Bulb's formspring:
The 3rd day of our first tour with him, he met our label heads for the first time as they invited us with the other Sumerian bands to a get together in their house.
Even though he had a girlfriend (of about 4 years no less), he was making out with this random drunk chick who was there, and as we tried to leave, he asked for 15 more minutes which we gave him.
After about 10 he came running back and said "drama, drama, we gotta go"
Chris has fucking sick high screams bro, holy shit!!
So is the guy singing this the original singer or a new one idk but I like this guy over the other one, he dosent sound so pop like
I know that they kept a lot of harmonies from Chris and some of the other vocalists for Racecar, but did they do the same for other songs on the album? The ones here sound almost, if not, identical.
Are you kidding? This dude is struggling so hard to hit some of those notes. "Identical." Get your ears wrecked... eerrr, I mean checked.
Devin Phares lol alright little boy
"Little boy," what a great rebuke.
Devin Phares
I'm really good at those.
@vdjn55 u said u hate Spencer's voice, then whats the point listening to their upcoming stuff, does it make sense now?
Does anyone have the links to some of Chris' songs with Periphery? Would love stuff like this, and The Walk.
Now, that i come to think of it: who did write all these vocals on periphery??
Also, first time i heard anyone but sponce on a periphery-song and i have to say: he is on a completely different level than this chris guy, i don't get everyone complaining about spencer, he is da shizzle on all of periphery and the new shit's gonna be even better!!
hell yeah, did you hear his singing on the new album promo? shits gonna be epic!
@lamerit read description dude.
Gift unto ..
@ARKAEA33 Chris has improved a lot. Go check out Ever Forthright.
It was on his formspring but that no longer exsists. Last thing I can think of is him talking about it on sevenstring(dot)org
@JonathanChunPrevenge What do you mean, what did they say?
the 1:36- 2:02 drumming is fucking insane! look up a cover of it and your mind will be blown
All of P1s drumming is completely insane. It hasn't been matched since either
Yo this is wild
bulb took this demo off soundclick, where can i download a high quality mp3?
@UnholyMessiah555 Perfectly put.
So whitch singer create the vocal theme?
I had the chance to hang out with Chris and the rest of Ever Forthright on a date in NJ with Structures, and all of them were nothing but respectful musicians. Chris was the farthest thing from a douche bag.
They TOTALLY should have kept that ending in the studio version.
wow, I never noticed before now how much Chris struggled on the high notes in the chorus.
Yup, it tops at a B5 - tough stuff - I can barely hit it without it sounding strained. Spencer of course has a monstrous range - so he easily hits it - the bastard
sorry, B4*
+ProtestMyHero sorta ironic how one of the most obvious parts he is straining on is on the word that is the title of the song. Haha
and just a couple of year later with songs like I, the Destroyer, he's nailing much higher notes.
thats not even that high, its below the tenor high C... plenty of male singers go way over and hit high ds fs, gs ... so its not high its getting high
I would like to hear the instrumental version
you can tell jake was a big NIN fan...
Chris owns Spencer in tracks like the walk, but Spencer sure gets his revenge in songs like this one
@JonathanChunPrevenge People need to stop putting personal issues at the forefront of writing music. Especially in this style of music/scene where people seem to feel the need to constantly interact with their 'idols'. Chris writes fucking bad ass melodies and vocal parts. I care not if he had sex with whoever, we're all human afterall and i'm glad he's not trying to put on a front like other artists, who appoint false impressions upon their fans for their own personal benefit and publicity.
pinson tennessee, bear creek road. come get some.
Chris has such a generic rock clean voice. Spencer's clean vocals are unmatched I'm afraid. Chris' screams are pretty good though, better than some of Spencer's early stuff in all honesty.
Rody Walker kills everyone. But, I like Chris. And Spencer.
why did chris barretto leave periphery
Announced: He's Monuments new singer!
Good choice. I've always liked chris.
Why did Periphery have so many different vocalists?
@jahcts Obviously they're going to be releasing instrumental stuff like they did with their first album.
Did that not cross your mind? *facepalm*
Was that cartman at the end
Definitely felt like a South Park reference "eyy guy", but maybe a Canadian, rather than Cartman
Whoever did that should voice cartman
The cleans are pre cringe compared to Spencer's spot on cleans. But the screams are much more rounded and less raspy. Easier for the ears to listen to, but losses its uniqueness.
orbination at its best \m/
CHRIS, Y U LEAVE?!?! This is the first time ever hearing this, I'm only 1:13 in, and I love it so much more than anything Spencer's done.
I'm sure that's not what you think now!
I like his cleans because they have more bottom end.
But spencer is still a badass
I like both of them, but what you need to understand about people is that they inevitably have something called "preferences." I still like Sotelo but I prefer Baretto's voice, because I just think it's better, and understandably some people won't like one of them or the other. Everyone's different.
The best vocals this song will ever have!
what was he supposed to do? ask Misha to tune down even lower? haha he's got a great voice and I hope he's still in some other band gotta look him up
Monuments
thanks, I've heard of them but I'm new to this stuff I'll check it out
I don't know. I won't hate on any vocalist they've had, but I've really come to like Spencer's style. I think he suits the music perfectly. Chris is excellent, but his clean vocals, to me, seem a bit too "run of the mill" or something.
I love the chorus because Chris sounds so Chris Cornell XD
Um, no. It was Casey/the rest of the band.
Screaming is good, but I definitively prefer Spencer in every vocal aspect..
Still awesome to hear some "beta" stuff from periphery :)
@vdjn55 then dnt listen to periphery anymore
u dnt have to discriminate others because u prefer the previous
lol haha so why exactly was he replaced looks like they are still on good terms?
Everybody: *Chris is better* *No! Spencer is!*
Me: *Just happy that they kicked Chris out because now we have a Monuments with Chris and Spencer Periphery is good as well*
Chris left Monuments a month before you posted this comment. RIP
I think Chris is just as good as Spencer, just not as high of a voice, as evidenced by this song.
Singers in order of goodness:
1. Casey - Large range and killer harsh vocals.
2. Spencer - Largest range, best clean vocals, harsh vocals are meh.
3. Chris - Range is barely large enough, cleans are okay, harsh vocals are pretty good.
4. Jake - No.
So much better :T
i like his voice more due to personal taste, but spencer makes it more interesting
wow, so many people hating on you here, for this. Whats wrong with these people? I prefer chris as well, I just like his voice better. Reminds me of chris cornell honestly.
is it just me or does this guy kinda sound like randy blythe
Not just you, I think they have similar screams as well.
I was just thinking the same thing
If you think he sounds like Randy here, check him out in Ever Forthright- Riot: Part1.
yep, in "the amanuensis" album from monuments, thare are some part where his style of voice seems randy's growl.
Is Periphery an Indian band?!?!?!?...... cause most of the band members looks like Indians or Iranians.
