Spencer really did amazing on this song. I know a lot of people prefer this version's vocals, but I just feel like in the new version Spencer completely perfected the atmosphere. His vocals match perfectly with the chord changes and the different moods in the song. This one is fantastic as well, but god damn Spencer has a good ear!
Ultimately Spencer, Misha, and Mark had around 10 years to remaster this, as opposed to when they got Chris Baretto to record vocals for this back in 2010
Personally think Spencer's vocal lines fit better with this song, here I just hear vocals over riffs whereas the new vocal lines really intertwine with the song.
Maybe because it was 10 years ago. Spencer is a better composer of vocal lines for me, but baretto isn't far behind given how great the songs by monuments are. I guess if asked to redo it now, he would do better.
Danyu91 periphery’s first album had lyrics that made no sense too, it was all just pseudo-esoteric BS, I’m pretty sure that Casey Sabol was pumping out weird lyrics for this and the first periphery album, he was into some weird cult shit back then.
Both of them are great vocalists but this song brings back memories from my childhood and it became part of my life. Spencers version made it too melodic while this for me as i like it is more expressive imo.
Same for me completely. This song alone lightened up my childhood from my depression back at that time, while I was getting the shit kicked out of me everyday. I was blessed to discover Periphery at that time. I feel like this version gives parts of the song time to breathe whereas Spencer's vox - albeit very well done - do not. But I'm still happy that Spencer ended up being the perfect fit for Periphery in the end. I just wish I was at the shows where Chris shows up with surprise guest vox. It would have done my childhood a great honor even more than seeing Periphery already does.
I still like this version better. Gives me so much nostalgia. The vocals seem way more passionate and (like you said) expressive in this version. The Spencer version just seems like a bunch of words smacked over a track. Chris' vocals actually feel like they fit the song and tell an epic story where Spencer's version just keep going and going with no coherent theme or direction or purpose.
id normally disagree with this but this song is so much more expressive with singing the screaming sounds so out of place and is just there for the sake of it sounding "heavier" when this song isn't meant to be heavy its beyond melodic and beautiful
@@aFutureSelf I don't think you even listened to Spencer's version like wtf is this bs you're talking about. How about you actually go look at the lyrics lmao

People can say what they want- this will always be my favourite version of the song. As far as I'm concerned, _this_ is the song and everything else is technically a cover of this version. I know that's not actually the case, but in my mind it is. 🤘
Both versions actually sound good to me. I prefer Spencer's clean vocals but prefer Chris's growls. It would've been more interesting if Spencer kept the same lyrics and Chris's version was remastered.
I don't know what to think with these 2 version (this and P4) I feel like some vocals are easier to digest in this version, like .. not sure how to explain that.. it's hard to explain :D but spencer always have a way to choose his melodies that hits another level and of course Spencer gives me chills in the second half of the song ! I wonder how Chris is feeling right now ?
Frankly I think it's just due to the fact that there is a lot less going on with both the vocals and the song in general in this version. I also think the vocals in this version feel kind of separate from the instrumental portion for the most part, whereas Spencer's vocals meld with the instruments and give it a much deeper and complex sound, though that could be argued as just a result of the mixing and mastering. I think this was essentially a demo, and the album version was just instrumental.
Tashiro I know what you mean, think Spencer’s screams and melodies are better but Chris spaces his lyrics better. Spencer’s seem like they were put in for the sake of it in some places so it feels like “filler words”

Hmmmm I prefer the P4 version, I just think Spencer has a better voice for this. It's a very 'positive hardcore' style song with its fast beats and major chords. Spencers choice of vocal melody really fits with it better and I think he does a better job of weaving through the instrumentation.
Yeah you guys can argue all you want about which one is better, but I'm telling you right now. If Periphery remakes Immaterial, Spencer is absolutely not touching Elliot on that track. He's just incapable of doing that.
I much prefer the vocals in this version. Spencer has always been a bit too whiny sounding for my tastes. Chris just hits notes. Awesome song either way!
In my opinion spencer’s strength has always been creating vocal melodies that fit over weird modulations, take a song like Ji or Froggin’ Bullfish for example.. he brings cohesion to the craziness of the instrumentals. no offence to Chris (I like him in monuments) but he doesn’t even sound that confident in his own melodies in this song, it sounds like it was slapped together in a few minutes
