Fun fact: None of the "friends" are based on actual voodoo spirits from that practice. The people who did the necessary research made sure, juuuuust to be sure they wouldn't anger any actual spirits.

Super unfounded theory makes me kinda not like this Chanel Because of the pure lack of research involved in these theories. There Haitian voodoo, or Louisiana voodoo, Loa Spirits. Otherwise know as the Ghede, and there is 100 % no mention or, reference to them at all whatsoever in the Nightmare Before Christmas. It's not even coincidental, it's just a horribly lazy Theory.

I miss 2d animated films and this film, The Princess and the Frog, proves how gorgeous it can be. Heck even the start of Enchanted had breathtaking animation too. I sincerely hope Disney makes another 2d film one day. Still hoping for a better Swan Lake based film aside from The Swan Princess which is not a Disney film. Because even though I loved the animation in that movie too the story had a lot of inconsistencies unfortunately. Anyway, great video and can't wait for the next theory!

I absolutely will always say that dr facilier is my favourite villain in Disney, just everything about him is so well done, the way he speaks, the way he’s dressed and especially how he moves. I especially love how dr facilier moves almost like a puppet in some scenes particularly in ‘friends on the other side’ when he dances, and it’s also one of the best parts of 2d animation, you can achieve interesting movement like dr faciliers
There are a few flaws with this theory. Just because a character is in cameo of a movie or show does NOT mean anything more than similar creators. Disney did both movies and were bound to reuse some designs. Cameos of Jack were also on James and the Gaint Peach, and the Disney T.V show Phineas and Ferb. This doesn't give much to hold the theory on. However, Disney's The Princess and the Frog was based in the one American city known for dabbling in the old HooDoo and VooDoo rituals brought over by slaves! The entire movie leans heavily on these old world magicks and bringing out some of the history of 1920's New Orleans.
Have you seen other videos on this channel? Its about creating theories based on what we know. None of it is actually meant to be taken as canon.

I always thought that Facilier's friends were from the Underworld. Coming to the land of the living would mean the lost souls could take a mortals place if they were to eat a human soul. But I do really like this theory!

his "friends" are probably loa spirits. There's three kinds of them but I'm going to focus on only two kinds: Rada and Pero. Rada are the "good guys". They often help people and are associated with positive emotions when Pero are like oposite of them. Most of loa spirits help people but only if they pay (nothing for free). Big request, big price. It's a part of a voodoo culture and loa can also possess people if they want. I think Facilier gave too big promise to a wrong kind of spirits.

Demons? Hardly. I would suggest researching Vodou before making rash statements. Loa are more akin to angels than demons, though really that's still not correct. Loa, unlike demons or angels, have very human personalities and can only very rarely be pinned as either 'good' or 'evil'. They are very neutral and interested in their goals.

Dr. faciller IS Oggy boge.ok you pointed stuff out that would lead to this. princess takes place first. back then Halloween town was different, jack did his own thing, he made the deal with Dr faciller to help get himself into the world. a deal that he saw fail. his punishment for failure was to be turned in to the boggie man with little power and sent to the out skirts to live with other taken soul that failed Jack. I.e. the kids. he's more powerful then them like in his life in the real world and persuasive, he took them in to be his minions. jack being tired of failure convinced the town to try something new. Halloween. till he got bored and moved on to Xmas. so yeah, there you go. jack is actually a manipulative villain who runs the town through a puppet mayor so if things go bad, they blame him and oggie is the Dr. turned into that after failing jack. look at the personalities of boggie and the doctor and they parallel. they both had a shadow that they control, both love jazz. etc. anyway, that's my theory thanks to you. maybe you could use it, have a nice day

Hate to burst your bubble, but there is a game called "The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King" that explains how Jack got his title. It doesn't disprove your theory but does make it less likely.
Not really. Video games are not canon to the films. Its like saying that Sora, Donald Duck, and Goofy all know Jack Skellington because they met him in Kingdom Hearts. In terms of the established Disney canon, that is untrue.
I really like the format of these videos; right to the point, all the necessary evidence, and nothing extra. A lot more efficient than some of the other theory channels out there.

Thank you for understanding. If you did make a video about the actual culture behind Dr Facilier's 'Friends', I would definitely watch it. I think part of it is that you chose 'Nightmare Before Christmas'. This is not the sort of thing they'd do, (excepting Oogie Boogie). It's pretty clearly laid out in the opening song, that the purpose of Haloweentown is basically benevolent.

Trading magic power for souls just doesn't fit that pattern.
That is actually possible. Disney secretly links movies. Like Peter Pan and Pirates of the Carribean. Its the same Universe. There is even a POTC story where a pirate relates how he saw Captain Hook and that he literally has not aged even after the years have passed and that he was afraid of a Cabin boy serving him food. Meaning Hook now has a pathological fear of children due to his injury. So both those worlds are linked. They also linked Aladdin and Hercules together as we can see where Hercules meets Aladdin after he married Jasmin because Hades resurrected Jafar in order to defeat Hercules and Aladdin.
I like hand drawn more. I used to hate the 3D animation when I was a kid, but as it got more into popularity, I got more used to it. I'd say, I don't hate the 3D now, but I would love to see some 2D animation every now and then, only because I do favor the aesthetics more and I find the worlds to look more appealing.

Are you sure the telephone wasn't already invented and used throughout the 20s? I read The Great Gatsby and that took place in the 20s and phone's were present.

As well: the amulet was for human use, and the monsters would not need it.
Well, to be fair, the undead and New Orleans go together like a whale and its barnacles, so it's no surprise Facilier would find some malevolent spirits willing to help the charismatic voodoo doctor's dirty deeds come true. That said, this is a rather interesting theory and certainly paints Oogie in a new light.

Seriously though, Dr. Facilier illustrates a philosophical principle discussed by C. S. Lewis in his 1943 book, "The Abolition of Man".
He writes, "It is the magician's bargain: give up our soul, get power in return. But once our souls, that is, ourselves, have been given up, the power thus conferred will not belong to us. We shall in fact be the slaves and puppets of that to which we have given our souls."
This is a really interesting theory. I haven't ever heard of it before! I've actually never seen either film talked about in this video, but I do like the theory.

You've actually done an awesome and unique theory I been having questions about and answered them in such a clear way.
So is that why Oogie was banished from Halloween Town, because he wanted to torcher innocent souls like Dr Facilia (don't think that's how you spell it, Oops). This theory mostly makes sense now.

Honestly I prefer 2D. 3D is kinda overused these days and I like the classic style of 2D animation. Now I'm not saying I hate it, some of my favorite movies are in the 3D style. I'd just like to see more movies today use 2D, know what I mean?

The diddler both jazz and blues is from black culture, and the reason that i think that oogiebogie sings blues and not jazz is because it has a sad tone to it. while the witchdoctor sings jazz, jazz is almost always happy while blues almost always have a sad tone to it.

I love your idea. Never thought of the spirits being from Halloween Town. I always thought that Disney took the existing myths and legends from New Orleans and other places. Taking myths such as Owl man, mothman, Slenderman, Rake, Shadow people, actual demons, etc and combine them to make Dr Faciliers' friends.

His "friends" aren't nice, but they are fair. They made a deal, he fucked up, they gave him a second chance, he fucked up again, so they came to collect on the debt he had agreed to assume with the promised collateral in case he failed to pay.
That was a really interesting theory. Very well done! I could definitely find that theory to be believable. Thanks for making a video about The Princess and the Frog and The Nightmare Before Christmas. They are are two of my favorite Disney films of all time! To answer your question, I prefer hand drawn animation over computer animation hands down. I grew up with it as a child and has more of that special craftsmanship and quality that CGI can never accomplish. From the tip of their pencils, traditional animators bring timeless characters to life. With computer animators, all they do are rig the characters and move them like puppets, kinda similar to how stop motion animation works.

I think the primary Loá that Dr Facilier worships (The long horned mask that gave him the amulet) is Baron Samedi. Baron Samedi is VERY closely related to death, evil, and mischief.

When I went to Disney he tried to trade for one of friends bracelets good for her there she responded "I'll never make deals with you,and try someone else other then your 'friend's'" he was so shocked I also decided to put my zero stuffie in his face and yell boo! When the video first started I couldn't believe the idea of the friends being from Halloween Town, but it was such a well thought out and awesome theory that I'm pretty convinced! These videos are so great! Fully obsessed!

In a sense I believe The Shadow Man took out a sort of Cupbead Style debt with the Devil. He got his powers but in return New Orleans’ Souls have to be sacrificed. Which is why when he fails the Devil reclaims his debt by taking him.
I think it's true that he had help from Halloweentown and believe had help at one time from Jack and I'm into hand-drawn and 3D animation

This was an epic theory! Also I prefer hand drawn animation, but it does depend on the tone of the feature. I think hand drawn just has its own charm. Like I can't see Aristocats and The Sword In The Stone in 3d.
I must agree that i miss 2D animation - when we 90's kids remember our childhood, 2D animation played a huge part in it. But when you see disney movies like Moana, its amazing to see how far animators have come along and you know the next generation are going to cherish these films. In regards to your theory DEEPLY CREATIVE in regards to the disney universe theories and it just might be true! But basically I just believe Dr.Faliciers "friends" are indeed demons from Hell. The animators made them "shadows" to not frighten children too much. He made a deal with the devil and when he failed, only his soul would serve as payment. Sincerely love the halloween town theory though!

It's a pretty sound theory.. except, telephones were around from as early as the 18 hundreds. In the 1920's it was in the shape of the Standing stick, or Candle stick telephone. In the 20's the phones started shifting more to the large base, and cradled ear / mouth pieces as seen in "A nightmare before Christmas." Though the Candle stick was still more widely used because the "Handset" or the French design was still somewhat expensive.
Also Radio. was also used in the 1920's as well, in fact there was a huge craze for it. Also, were it not for Radio, I'm sure a LOT of propaganda wouldn't have been used as widely or as much in the first World War, or even for the broadcasts used that led up to the Second World War in the 40's. if they didn't exist.
I hate poking holes into theories, but I've been researching the era of the 20's since 2012, for a novel I'm working on, so I thought I should correct you. ^^;

Hand-drawn animation is my favorite. 3D is cool, but 2D leaves more room for artistic expression in film-making.
My theory is that the friends on the other side are fallen angels aka: demons
The hand drawn animation looks better to me. At least most of the time. Both seem to have their shinning moments.
One thing I noticed would be that Halloween Town shouldn't be the only world from which such spirits could have been drawn. The holiday is actually fairly new, where holidays are concerned. While I don't know exactly when Halloween started, it is my understanding that a world called Halloween Town could only be connected to a world after they aquire the idea of Halloween. Without that core concept, it would be next to impossible to build a bridge between the two worlds. It definitely wouldn't be as easy as it seemed in the Princess and the Frog movie. And if it wasn't, that is one powerful and furious being on the other side.

"they both have jazz as there theme" but jazz is a HUGE staple in New Orleans-Maybe Tim Burton like that his villain could have a jazz theme. "Jack Skeleton himself, who we see the silhouette of when Dr. faciller asked his 'friends on the other side'" ok so if that's Jack then couldn't the one to the right be Boogie? and Jack is a Skeleton, its in his name, we never see other "bad" monsters in Halloween town, If Jack could be a shadow like monster that can interact with solid matter, then why is he a skeleton? I understand that they were NEVER planed to be correlated like how they are in the video, and that he never said it was true or cannon, and that this video theory was a stretch from the beginning, but its true you have to admit that there are a lot of holes in the theory- other than that its pretty good.
This is why I love your vids cos I would never have noticed half of these
