  • The Marshall DSL40CR 40W Valve Combo is a powerful amplifier that delivers a full assortment of features for use on stage and in the studio. It is loaded with EL34 valves for an organic and responsive sound and feel. The amplifier has 2 gain modes (Classic and Ultra) which each have 2 modes, effectively giving you 4 channels of versatile gain levels. This will let you shape every sound imaginable; from clean tones through to edge-of-breakup sounds and onto full-on saturation lead sounds. The DSL40CR has a full range of EQ with independent presence and resonance controls to match the acoustics of the room. It also has a built-in reverb with independent levels across the two gain modes. 2 separate master volumes add the ability to create a solo level sound for instant volume boosts, accessible via the footswitch. The DSL40CR also has a switchable output power setting meaning you can get the same great valve tone at a lower volume. A separate direct output also gives access to Softube emulation, letting you can get the sound of a professionally mic'd up cabinet simply by running a cable between the amp and a mixing desk/recording device. The DSL40CR is an all-encompassing amplifier that represents a new standard in gigging and recording amplifiers. The new Softube emulations make it an even more potent tool, and it should easily adapt to many different musical situations.

      @@babyyoda3467 "Taking pedals well" is hilariously faint praise, especially for a tube amp. The only pedal that might not be "taken well" is an overdrive - and this amp has plenty of gain on tap to not really need one of those for most purposes.

      @@babyyoda3467 although it’s subjective in my opinion, the short answer is YES! Really depends on what pedals and how you run them like any other amp. I bought mine because I love Marshall gain so I don’t run overdrive, just a fuzz and my Klon set with no gain and just switch channels when I want gain. Best bang for your buck if Marshall tone is what you’re after. I know this post is old AF but hey, I was here. LOL

      Like most other tube amps, the DSL40 enjoys being loud. It sounds at its best when you open up the volume and get those tubes working. Quieter usage is a secondary usage - but it's a good secondary usage. It sounds *best* loud, but it still sounds *really good* quiet.

      @@flavionovaes363 A 100 watt amp isn't actually that much louder than 40 watts given the same speakers. Low-power mode doesn't really matter in that regard - a 50 watt amp isn't that much louder than a 20-watt amp either.
      Even in low-power mode, the 40 watt version would still be *way* too loud for bedroom usage unless you pair it up with a little 1×12 speaker cabinet and keep the master volume somewhere below a quarter of the way up - and that use case is covered by the combo version, without the need for a separate cabinet.
      That's not even going into the use-case of using it with a load-box going directly into a mixer/interface - that use-case is just as well covered by the 100-watt head, given the amp's volume doesn't matter at that point.

    By setting the Master 2 volume control low, and the Ultra Gain volume & gain controls high, does that allow you to get a really nice overdriven tube sound at low volumes? I was thinking of getting the DSL5CR as a nighttime bedroom practice amp (set to the 1-watt setting), but now I'm thinking/hoping I can get that same nice crunchy tone at lower volumes with the DSL40CR using the Master volume control. The DSL40CR would also be more versatile because I could also use it for band practice & gigging.

      I found a review and an actual website that shows the features of this amplifier! There is an emulated headphone plug hole that you can plug your headphones and practise silently at night ! DSL40cr is loud enough to play gigs with your band and the drummer wont be an issue... i tested the old DSL15c against a drummer and it has enough power to perform against a medium hitting drummer (on OD channel) .... Thats all I know i hope i helped you ! Be well!

    • @martinafan64
      @martinafan64 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Do have a link for the site with that review? I actually have the older version of this 40 watt amp (DSL40C), and even with the wattage cut in half to 20 watts, the ultra gain channel still doesn't sound too good at low volumes. That's why I was considering the DSL5C & DSL5CR. But then I saw the DSL40CR and found out about the Master 1 & 2 volume controls and thought that would work for nighttime playing at home too. Good to know about the emulated headphone jack, that would definitely come in handy when everyone in the house is sleeping. But I want the ultra gain channel to sound good through the speaker too when set to low volumes. I guess I'll have to wait until our local Guitar Center has one in stock so I can try it out. Thanks again!

    • @martinafan64
      @martinafan64 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, for now I've decided to keep my DSL40C. I've actually decided to buy the DSL1HR 1-watt head which has a 0.1 watt low power mode because I think I need the lowest wattage possible in order to be able to crank the volume high enough to get the tubes hot enough to make the high gain tones sound good at a volume that won't annoy family members or hurt our pets' ears. I'm hoping our local GC gets a DSL40CR soon so I can try it. If I like what I hear with the ultra gain channel volume cranked up and the Master volume turned down, I may eventually trade in my DSL40C for it.
      I do most of my playing at home, and even in 20 watt mode, I can only turn the volume of my DSL40C between 1.5 and 2. On my Marshall AVT150H, I can only turn the volume up to 0.5! High gain doesn't sound good at these low volumes, so I can't wait to get that 1 watt head!

      One tip, if you want to cut through in a mix, regardless of what you're using - *do not scoop the mids* on your EQ. The mids is where your guitar *lives* in the mix.

      Yes, this speaker is MUCH better than the 70/80, which is too flat and treble-y. The new V-Type speaker is warmer and helps cut the harsh high-end spike. The loop button is to turn the FX loop on/off.
      The new DSL40CR also allows you to use the optional 6-way footswitch to change between modes in each channel (OD1/2, Clean/Crunch), which is an option many people have been wishing to have for a long time. If you don't already own one, then I'd suggest going for the new one.

I absolutely guarantee you that if you were blindfolded, there is no way on EARTH that you'd be able to tell the difference by sound alone. Sustains for days and the tone is insane. Granted, you'd know when you touched it but only because of the lacquer. I've owned 4 Gibson Les Pauls over the years and still have 2 of them. I bought the Epi because one of the bars we play at is, shall we say, "lively" and usually results in people jumping on stage, etc. and I was always super paranoid about dinging one of the Gibsons. I've been utterly blown away by the quality. Say what you want about Chinese guitars but, as the years go by, they are getting better and better. It won't be long until THEY have all the expertise, rather than the guys in the US. I also have an un-modded 1997 Korean Epiphone SG (the G-400 I think is the name of the model) and, again, from sound alone, you would never ever know that it wasn't a Gibson.

      @@ronnieparfait To be fair, Dave Simpson has a series of videos proving solid state can go head to head (pun intended) with a tube amp.
