Lamb Protection With Centrefire Rifles Part Two

  • Hi every one, here in the UK Crows and Magpies can cause devastating damage to the rare nesting birds we have on our moors for example Curlews, lapwings meadow pipits and many many more, they also predate on the song bird population ,also around lambing time the crows will peck out the eyes of the new born lambs while they are vulnerable just after birth and even at times while the Ewe is giving birth crows will peck out the eyes and tongues of a lamb, so as a pest controller our laws let us control them all year round, here i am using centre fire rifles as the crows and magpies can wise up avoiding traps and keeping out of range of air rifles and shotguns at times cheers.

      Joe this is only the second film from this guy I have watched. In the first film he was shooting crows at 380yrds and here he is shooting at 550yds. Now I realise the guns are different, but I thought shooting beyond 300yrds/metres was why .762X51 reappeared in Afghanistan. So .223 will carry but it loses effect, which won't matter for small creatures, but what the hell it will accurately carry 550yrds? Large distances, are you using laser rangefinders? How do you judge wind so accurately? You mentioned an 80something grain projectile whilst I've only known 77grain projectiles as the maximum mass for .223?

    You’re an amazing marksman! I raise cattle, so crows aren’t a threat to them, but are great pests for stealing pecans out of the trees we have. They have proven to me they are very intelligent birds. For those who don’t know, the pecans in the shell are grown on the tree within a larger hull. When the pecans start to ripen in the fall, this hull cracks and dries out, eventually splitting open along natural seems that spread open allowing the pecan shell to fall out to the ground. I remember one year we had an especially great crop of them and the crows were getting them before they fell. My grandmother insisted that we grab all we could before we lost them. When you try to open that hull before they crack open on their own, that hull is very tough and will stain your fingers brown. The stain is so durable you can’t wash it off. It has to wear off! Anyway, back to the crows. They would take these pecans in the hull and lay them out on the blacktop road. Not just anywhere, but in the “ruts” so to speak where vehicle tires would hit them! That takes more intelligence than I had ever thought they had before I saw it too many times to rule out by accident! This man has to shoot these crows at these great distances because if they spot him at normal to them threat range or hear the normal non suppressed report of a rifle, they are gone!

    That’s some damn fine shooting. I love how your spotter just hangs out too. Good stuff.
    I just watched a video yesterday in Scotland on how the corvids eat the eyes and tongues out of the lambs as they’re being born. Also they open up the sheep to get to the lambs in the womb. Pretty crazy.

      It’s a common thing John with outdoor lambing, especially when ewes are having a tough lambing the crows will peck out the eyes as it is halfway being born. It’s horrible thing when the lamb is dead but it’s even worse when they are not.

    • @emittevans9014
      @emittevans9014 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I held those birds in higher regard than that till I saw this vid, its wasteful of them. Eating the whole lamb is one thing, but just the eyes and tongue? Time to go bird huntin! Turn em into sheepdog food. BTW we aren't related but my late daddy was also named John (Vietnam vet helicopter pilot) passed 13 yrs go he was born 1942. Nice to meet you John Evans your name has a familiar place in my heart therefore I officially grant myself permission to borrow money from you!

    You are a sniper of the highest order. I'm from the U.S. and hunt big game animals such as deer and elk. I can hit those animals with lethality out to the distances you are shooting, but I'm not sure I could hit a Crow or Raven with any regularity. Well done!!

    Hey Simon, Lovely video, just the sound of the wind, and the occasional pop. The silence gives a sense of the peacefulness of the moor and also the stillness and concentration required to achieve your remarkable level of marksmanship. re: silence: please tell me about the suppressors you use.
