Create your own universal, one-size-fits-all, fold-able, portable, easy-to-make wind screen that is as handy as a latch on an outhouse door! Maybe that’s not the perfect comparison but you get the gist.
There’s more to this design than putting the windshield together with a bunch of key rings. It's both that simple and a bit complex at the same time. First, here are the things you need:
Ten (10) license plates (the USA versions).
This is important: Use eighteen (18) 1 ¼ inch large key rings. I’ll explain why this size is important.

There are many challenges in cooking outdoors. First and foremost, weather happens outside. Cold, hot, rain, wind, and all kinds of natural challenges. Hey! It’s what makes a good meal great. Yeah, flavor, right? Yes, you’ll be amazed at how delicious nostalgia tastes.
The biggest challenge with weather is usually managing the heat that “heats” the cast iron camp Dutch oven. That heat from your coals or charcoal briquettes is known as thermal heat. The heat from the charcoal briquettes travels outward in all directions (including down). Thermal heat or thermal radiation is like rivers of electromagnetic waves of heat.

Sulae, what a convenient & practical wind/heat solution for someone that DO camps in the mountains or plains. Plus your thoughtfulness to make a well designed video to share it. A perfectly reasonable way to be compliant in a limited fire area. 👍👍🙏🤠Pilot Rock
So glad this popped up today! Thank you for sharing!
Hey friend! It’s a handy thingamajig to have on a windy (or not so windy) day. Let me know if you have any questions. And, may your license plate search be fruitful! Speaking of search…I was at a gas station the other day and found 2 Washington plates in the trash…wonder what the story is behind that?! Enjoy!
I made a license plate windshield after watching this video. I used it today with my brinkman smoker. What a great invention! It works wonderful! Thank you for such a useful video.
Look! At! YOU!! This is a great comment and much appreciated!
This is genius! I shared your video with a friend too!
You made my day!! Thanks much for the motivation!
How cool is that!!!
Love your idea!!
Easy to make (except for finding the license plates). Was at a gas station the other day…a few more days ago now…and there were two plates there on top of the garbage. May have been weird to others who watched me grab them and put them in my car…I wonder what the story behind those plates are. Likely none, but maybe…
Where do you get the license plates? I LOVE this idea and want to make my own.
Hello to you Ms.Michelle! There’s a few places I search. Garage sales have been (believe it or not) one of my best resources. If I see one on the side of the road (and if safe to pull over), I grab it. Family has also been a huge help. Most folks think that license plates are some how as sensitive as social security numbers (LOL-ish). But, most folks will give them away to folks they trust knowing their best interests are kept in check. eBay and Facebook market may produce a “score” now and then. You need 10; that’s the goal (initially). And GOOD LUCK. Here’s the link to the article: beerandiron.com/homemade-license-plate-windshield-for-the-cast-iron-camp-dutch-oven/
I see license plates at flea markets. Especially the kind that has crap jammed in from floor to ceiling.
Instead of a garbage can lid I've found that a feed pan for small live stock works great. That way you have a flat bottom. But I like all your set up anyway.
Excellent! Had a viewer send me a flat pan that I plan to use in future videos. I hope it works better than my wobbly garbage can lids. Though some fire pits seem to be “scooped” out a bit. I think a flat one will work very okie-dokie! Thanks much for the comment. Would love to know what feed pan you’re using.
@@beerandiron Around here ( Wester West Virginia) we call it a hog feeder. Just a steel pan about 18 inches in diameter with 4 or 5 inch sides.
Oh. Yeah. I know that that looks like. The edges are almost as high as a windscreen…almost. Very nice!
@@beerandiron They're not quite that high. Just a few inches higher than the rim on your trash can lid. High enough to protect the coals from direct wind effect.
What do you use the 8 inch for ?.
Oh! Lots of things. It's perfect for a single-serve: th-cam.com/video/gyKQtpESBTw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qh53NA9-N0E6BdYn // And: th-cam.com/video/zcGN4ggAtyU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wVktmG2zD_I8xBrO&t=321. Plus...it's just the cutest little dude ever!
