    Sam, I think you need to come to terms with the fact that Land Rover have given up on the traditional (agricultural) market - The Japanese stole that a long while ago with 4x4 Pick-ups which were far more reliable and were difficult to break. If you look at the last few years of the (old) Defender market place, they were all specc'd-up to the eyeballs with 'outdoor kit' so that they could safely cruise the mean streets of Chelsea.....(until they were stolen due to crap security measures!)
    This car is very much aimed at these urbanites and those who (quite rightly) detest the fifth version of the Discovery.
    Disco 5 is dead in the water now that this car is launched

      In Europe, we have more expensive fuel and smaller roads, smaller parking spaces. An American full size pick up would be stupidly impractical here. Small hatchbacks are popular because they are cheap, easy to park and maneuver and consume less fuel.

    I thought I was going to go head over heels for the Defender. I'm a huge fan of LR since the Ford sured them up. What I learned is that I don't mind spending the money on luxury, but these Wrangler/Gladiator people who are spending $50-60k+ on rugged beaters are insane. The "status" trend is dumb. Get something for your money. Now pardon me while I go and spec my Bronco to over $50k to get it max ready to race over and sand dunes, and I'll never race over sand dunes.

    Let's be honest, the car could not have been the same exact car as the old Defender (sorry Defender enthusiasts). This is primarily due to CO2 emissions and regulations. However, even though I loved the old defender, I do accept change and if I could I would have a Defender 90 in all black, with the smallest rims and offroad tires and with the front row extra optional seat, please! Also, the 3.0L engine seems to be more than adequate although a 2.0L hybrid used in the Range Rover P400e would have been more environmentally friendly. Hope we can agree Sam! As ever, excellent video! Keep up the great work and we will continue to follow :)

Depends what cheap is, you can get a decent TD5 SW for 12 to 15K, which I think is ok dependent on how well it’s been looked after. I've run a few XC90's...drove a defender a few years ago, was blown away by how functional, simple and sturdy it was. This year I bought a Land Rover. 1966 series 2a...beat up old thing, will be putting it to work and keeping it running. If they'd have updated the old defender platform instead of the compete departure that this is I might have bought one. I don't really understand the many options currently offered by LR...disco, range rover, RR sport and now defender...all seem basically the same to me and none are what I am after. An old platform defender with a few much needed updates I'd part with my cash for...Spent my money on the used market instead. I'm sure these appeal to some people and my views are obviously just based on my personal experience.

    As someone who has lived in the highlands for their entire lives, the locals who have had old defenders in the past will be moving to more conventional pickups and the new defenders seen in the highlands will be wealthy city folk who go to their holiday home in the highlands once a year. Or prehaps again wealthy people southerners who retire for the so called ‘rugged highland lifestyle’. It’s a shame but in truth its probably the reality.

    • @joshuakelly8103

      @Jkinsg92 If I had to guess, it would be total lack of awareness of the local culture, history and ettiquete; in fact total inability to comprehend that there's even a difference from say Surrey...
      Add to that the negative impact that an influx of wealthy individuals moving to an area but not really joining the community can have for the local population, and then the disproportionate impact just a handful of oblivious tourists can have on the very limited infrastructure in large parts of rural Scotland...
      Or Culloden.

      I think the Greadier not being built in Britain is going to lose it's appeal to most buyers.
      That is even if it ever gets built anywhere.
      Going to be a confusing world if there are grenadiers and Defenders going around.
      The one that isn't a Defender looks like a Defender, and the one that is a Defender doesn't look like one.

      Grenadier is going to end up being the same kindof thing, rugged aesthetic in a lux package. Yeah itll have solid axles but the drivetrain will put off a lot of utility buyers and home mechanics. And I am skeptical of the price being anywhere near the old defender.

    • @MrSchulta
      @MrSchulta 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Yarxov unfortunately nowadays it's almost impossible to sell a vehicle with a rugged, old school diesel engine, like I imagine you are talking about. this is why ineos are going for an engine/drivetrain which is both proven and reliable, but also meets emission standards.
      In regard to price, Ineos have never stated that it will be a budget vehicle. they have always said that it will be priced similarly to the new defender, but that it will be a genuinely rugged vehicle, with top quality parts to enable it to do the things that the old defender could, but probably even better.
      I'm excited for it, but realistic about what they can achieve.

  • @alantd44
    @alantd44 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have one. I agree with much of what you say.
    Maybe they just used the wrong name - you can't compare it to the original Defender (which I also still have). Totally different car and concept.
    Better to compare it to the Discovery (which I've just got rid of to buy the Defender). It's like a "Discovery Rugged". It's like a better version of the D4 (which I had), leaving the D5 (which I also had) to drift upmarket as a 'Swiss army family wagon'.
    Target audience: It's definitely more rugged inside and outside than the Discovery and you can get it with decent (smaller) rims and off-road tyres.
    Mine hauls my family in style; my trailers with ease; the dog with no pretence and kit inside and on top more capably than almost any other car on the market (save a VW Transporter). Mine also spends time off the tarmac and is currently covered in muck.
    All vehicles are a compromise. I'd say this is an all-purpose vehicle with swagger. It takes punishment when needed, can cosset on long journeys with ease and stands out from the increasingly bland cookie-cutter competition. Most importantly, it makes you feel like you can conquer the world - even though you're just off to Tesco.

    Crackin review Sam 🙂
    It's nice to hear a 'Personal' opinion, rather than just a review on what it's got or not got, so thanks for that 🙂👍🏻
    My opinion, being an ex-farmer, and working for the National Trust building team in the North Yorkshire dales, I literally lived 90% of my time in or with the older Defender's, and I loved them 😊
    I had a TD5 90 for work, fully kitted out and constantly pulling a trailer,
    And personally I owned a series 3 110 as our family vehicle, and sure they weren't luxurious, but my god were they capable 😉👍🏻
    And I knew I could trust in the fact it would take any amount of abuse I through at them, and I definitely feel that's what these new one's have lost 😣😥
    There's no way farmer's are going to shell out 60k-70k on a vehicle that's going to spend 99% of it's life covered in shite, and getting knocked about by livestock 😕 and surely that was landrovers target audience?? Or it certainly used to be, I definitely feel the new one is aimed at the soccer mum's, doing school runs and shopping with the girl's 😒
    I'm sure landrover won't loose out, and will sell plenty,
    But they were seen as the backbone of the British farming industry, or known as the best rugged around the world vehicle like the iconic 'Camel Safari' race
    There's no chance these ugly thing's will be doing that, and that's lost the whole ethos of the vehicle in my eye's 🥺😔
    Thanks again for the review Sam 🙂
    All the best,
    Mark 👍🏻

    I really like the new Defender. It appears very capable off road. There is also a commercial version that should be available now.
    My family have owned Land Rovers from the 60s, 70s and 80s, and as much as I love the previous versions, the fact remains that:-
    1.0 People were not buying them and the vehicle doesn't conform to current standards
    2.0 The Aluminium alloy panels on a steel Frame was way too expensive to build
    3.0 The interior was cramped and heavily compromised.
    4.0 For Land Rover to survive they need a model that will last (with regular updates) for the next two decades, unlike Mercedes LR cannot afford a nostalgic Halo Project.
    Owners of the previous Defender need not worry, there are loads of companies re imaging and rebuilding them to new showroom specs. There are also so much spares around an owner could easily do a 'triggers broom' if they wanted to.

    • @jamie_grieve
      @jamie_grieve 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s the point, it’s really tall but doesn’t have any ground clearance or wheel travel. The maximum ground clearance under the chassis is lower on its highest setting than a fully loaded old defender. The SAE ground clearance isn’t published but it’s very poor. The real issue is the very low hanging suspension arms will prevent movement in hard ruts and that the exhaust is unprotected and is the first part to come into contact with the ground as it hangs underneath the rear differential. The incredibly soft and vulnerable bodywork is also very low to the ground. You can no longer pick your way over stones and stumps by driving over them. The cross linking of the air suspension is only a marketing exercise as there’s virtually no real world articulation due to the tiny size of the pipes and the ridiculously short suspension arms don’t help either.

    I struggle with it , JLR have always struggled with their electronics and the last thing you want in an off road rugged vehicle is mountains of electronics , they can’t make 100k vogues and sports work so I doubt the new defender will be reliable in this field , I think you hit the nail on the head it’s the perfect family car 7 seats easily cleaned and rugged, old defender prices have increased but they are still obtainable to the vast majority of people and if that’s what your looking for just buy the original you won’t loose any money on a landy either apart from the temptation of modding , it’s more of a disco isn’t it I think we just have to let go of the past model it will always live on and view this new defender for what it actually is , a comfortable 4x4 with the JLR badge that will spend its life on school car parks and costa drive throughs

If you take a Rubicon to its limits with front and rear locked and sway bar disconnects engaged it will walk places this thing could never dream of. And sad thing is both with stock tires we will, we'll have a little meat with sidewalls this thing will pop tires like on tfl off road video. It's a joke. • @enzoUKSC
      @enzoUKSC 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @prasannaiks naiks It is yet another variant of Discovery. Not really a commercial utility vehicle, which was what the old Defender was. Land Rover has given away that market, without even trying to defend it, to the ubiquitous pickup truck. Whole swathes of the countryside and utility companies, police and coastguard have dumped their ancient old 90 and 110 for pickups. Discovery5, Defender and RR are cannibalising each models sales. That must be a huge problem for JLR because their main competitor is their own vehicles and they are all roughly in the same price zone.

I think they nailed it, these things have proven they can do all and more that the old Defender could and it brings the interior, the handling and technology up to 21st Century standards. I think they should bring out a much cheaper version with less luxury and more of a wash down interior so that farmers and the like aren't worried about damaging the interior. I also really like the look of it I think they really captured the essence of the old Defender and made it look 100% more stylish. Crazy. I'm watching this video on in-flight wifi and flying over Moab the moment Sam mentioned it. Freaky. 5:39

    I’ve seen one in the flesh and it’s HUGE.

    Spot on review Sam. A very cool and capable car no doubt but they have completely lost the market of who defenders were originally made for. Can't see many farmers ragging them about with their sheepdog in passenger seat. We need to see a half-way house between the Suzuki Jimny and the new Defender... rugged, retro, hard as nails, good 4x4 credentials and prices starting sub £30k, you'd be onto a winner.

    Most young parents with young kids don’t have £50k+to spend on an urban safari car !

    The 90 looks a bit more Defenderish but the thing it really reminds me of is the Freelander.

    How much was the last 110 Defender? Here in Portugal was 70k and only electric windows, the new is 80k....
