So many memories of this show...from the revolving "special" CBS used before all their special programs to the many wonderful nominees...but when I saw Jennifer Holiday in the thumbnail, I had to grab some tissues, because her performance on stage holds a very special memory for me, and many others out there, I'm sure. Same thing happened tonight as on that evening so long ago, just crying like a baby at the end of her song, so much talent it brought me to tears. Thank you for all your posts, can't wait to be caught up with all of them!
I video taped this as a little kid, and then cried when I later accidentally taped over it. I was in love with the actor playing Joseph. So gorgeous and talented! (As was The Narrator in the show.)
The "Joseph" segment on this telecast is the only time I think I've seen the original Broadway cast perform the show onstage! Pity there's no officially filmed version. That was the BEST cast!
Completely forgot Laurie Beechman was featured this year as most everybody thinks of this as "Dreamgirls vs Nine" and now I'm sobbing after seeing her just shine and shine and shine.
Always love seeing Robert Preston perform. Besides his unparalleled career in film and on stage, they included him here since fresh from 'Victor Victoria'.
The medley at 1:11:55: "Standing on the Corner" from The Most Happy Fella "Begin the Beguine" from Jubilee "They Say It's Wonderful" from Annie Get Your Gun "Most Gentlemen Don't Like Love" from Leave It to Me "If I Were a Rich Man" from Fiddler on the Roof "Stouthearted Men" from The New Moon "All of You" from Silk Stockings "Big D" from The Most Happy Fella "Wish You Were Here" from Wish You Were Here "It's a Lovely Day Today" from Call Me Madam "You're My Everything" from The Laugh Parade "Love Makes the World Go 'Round" from Carnival "They're Playing Our Song" from They're Playing Our Song "Consider Yourself" from Oliver! "No Time At All" from Pippin And all those shows except Fiddler and TPOS were listed on the wall.
I see a queen in a profile pic, I automatically click! Where are you from? You seem very new York to me. I just love drag...all queens and Kings and club kids. So fun. I'm going to dragcon NYC tomorrow
The look of suprise on Horne's face was real. True story: she couldn't find her glasses backstage, so she said "Oh, I guess I can read "Dreamgirls." Nine won. In a percursor to Trump losing the 2020 election, Michael bennet was so furious at losing that he demanded a recount, saying HIS show was the real winner. Nine still won.
Anyone know if there was an in memoriam for this broadcast and at what time? I don't want to have to watch the whole thing to try and find it if it's even there! Thanks in Advance!
What happened? Joseph Papps revival of the Pirates of Penzance was shown billing but was not included anywhere in this video. Yet, Pirates won a Tony for best revival of a musical. What goes?
oh they kept the I Love New York theme for another year oh not another theatre tribute theme (I can see why they normally have it at Radio city these days) Man everyone talks about all the nominees from this year except Pump Boys man what a voice on (wait is that Lucie Arnaz or Michelle Lee it's neither) I wonder if Annie and Sandy are facing away from people in this sign, I guess they must have announced they were closing at this point (not til the following year) is it just me or did Dreamcoat sound a little drowned out and rushed oh Katherine Hepburn returned to the stage (I thought she would have been one and done after Coco) They're playing our song is a bigger banger the second time around how has Dreamgirls never gotten a revival in the 21st century I mean yeah we got a movie that made Jennifer Hudson the most successful American Idol non-winner ever (man who would have thought that Sheryl Lee Ralph would go on to do something bigger long after Dreamgirls was done *cough cough Abbot Elementary), then Jennifer Holiday lost the weight and did the Masked Singer but man if I ever sang like her in this scene I would have gotten instant Laryngitis but that is a Tony winning performance) oh wow a super young David Alan Grier uh who won best book of a musical anyone catch it?
MY WHOLE LIFE I've lived less than 2.5 hours from NYC and I have NEVER been to a musical. Too frikkin expensive...I mean there is that Tix thing I guess if they still have it but yeah...never been. My friend was at opening night of School of Rock, like front row(he's Ginger Minj from Rupaul's Drag Race) and Andrew Lloyd Webber stood mere feet from him giving the opening night speech. Then he went to Kinky Boots and met Wayne Brady...
There are great productions in regionals theaters, community theaters and even high school theaters, and they are all much cheaper. Thumbs up for your friend Ginger Ming!
Nine and Dreamgirls were the two hot musicals competing fiercely against each other, and it could have gone either way. I suspect 9 may have won by a single vote. They were both tremendously powerful musicals on stage, but Dreamgirls got its revenge by having the far better movie. Sadly it’s creator, Michael Bennett, who also created A Chorus Line, had already passed away from AIDS.
I remember the movie of Nine was pretty much ravaged by the critics and some audience members. I never saw the musical, but recall B Italian and thought it was pretty funny and fun, but what about the rest of the show? Anyone remember any of the songs? I'll have to look up the tunes somewhere, but I just can't imagine Dreamgirls not winning! The movie of the musical was pretty great. :D
While both wildly popular, I think "Nine" benefited from having opened the most recently (and was fresher in the voters' minds). Also, both musicals were critiqued for their books and I think "Dreamgirls" got more flak than "Nine" did.
@@donhailer4994 Depending on what you read, there was a producers' war for the Best Musical trophy, and lines were clearly drawn between camps, which is why you only see half the hose applauding anytime Dreamgirls or Nine wins a prize. Neither of those shows is as important as Nickleby, anyway.
@@donhailer4994 that just doesn't make sense (but it probably would for 1776 as well) because Hamilton missed the 2015 deadline and became a monster winner in 2016
Oh I learned a new fact! Nell Carter was supposed to be Effie, but she got the soap Ryan's Hope, and took that instead. I ALWAYS thought she was an Effie!
If you ever wanna see drag excellence. Look up Victoria Parker or porkchop not sure who she goes by on here.... doing a lip synch to this song. It got her second runner up at miss gay America 2005. I am telling you, I mean
This was a few days before I graduated High School..... Jennifer Holiday changed the direction of my life..... thank you for posting this....!!!!

If only all awards shows were this entertaining!
Thank you some much, what wonderful treasures, can't wait for the next up loads once again big big BIG thank you
Always love seeing Robert Preston perform. Besides his unparalleled career in film and on stage, they included him here since fresh from 'Victor Victoria'.
Could you point out the time where Billy Preston performs??
Tom Fong Tom, It's not Billy Preston, it's ROBERT Preston.
I think its so cool that they paid tribute to the history of the theatre that was hosting the awards.

Hard to find talents like these men and women, during this year and before.
OMG.. I saw Master Harold and The Boys....Fabulous play
THANK YOU SO MUCH
1:19:30-1:27:30 Dreamgirls
Pump Boys performance was amazing! Thanks so much! I hadn't heard of it before!
I saw it. Fun show.
Ann Miller and Ginger Rogers!
Two words. Jennifer. Holliday.
"God" should have got billing to! Great post- and lovely to see golden age Hollywood stars Ann Miller and Ginger Rodgers
WHEN LENA HORNE COMES OUT IN RED LIKE SHE OWNS THE PLACE!!
Jennifer Holliday!! The beautiful woman can sing!
JH is like a force of nature.
hahah Lena Horne at the end was so special.
Thank you for posting this. I just randomly searched for this and voila there it was. Your channel has fabulous videos. Im subbed.

@45:26 Cherrrrrrrr😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Ms. Krause has a delightful singing voice.
This looks kinda funny Tony Randall on the Tony awards lol 🎭😁 hosting.
I dunno if I'd see a while musical of pump boys and dinettes. Maybe if it were like a thing where they were cheap like cheap tickets or Tix
I saw it. Prob by TKTS. It was just fluff. But, entertaining fluff. I also saw Nine and Dreamgirls (twice) that year. Dreamgirls shoulda won.
1:45:44 you’ll see Sheryl lee Ralph confused on how Dreamgirls didn’t win Best Musical
Nine was a better show. They are both great.

Ray Fridley Pirates won in 1981.
1:18:56 for dreamgirls
Sheryl and loretta looks cute
the peak of american musical theater.
More exchange? One year later the flood gates of British Broadway invasion began with Cats and you know the rest,
oh they kept the I Love New York theme for another year
oh not another theatre tribute theme (I can see why they normally have it at Radio city these days)
Man everyone talks about all the nominees from this year except Pump Boys man what a voice on (wait is that Lucie Arnaz or Michelle Lee it's neither)
I wonder if Annie and Sandy are facing away from people in this sign, I guess they must have announced they were closing at this point (not til the following year)
is it just me or did Dreamcoat sound a little drowned out and rushed
oh Katherine Hepburn returned to the stage (I thought she would have been one and done after Coco)
They're playing our song is a bigger banger the second time around
how has Dreamgirls never gotten a revival in the 21st century I mean yeah we got a movie that made Jennifer Hudson the most successful American Idol non-winner ever (man who would have thought that Sheryl Lee Ralph would go on to do something bigger long after Dreamgirls was done *cough cough Abbot Elementary), then Jennifer Holiday lost the weight and did the Masked Singer but man if I ever sang like her in this scene I would have gotten instant Laryngitis but that is a Tony winning performance)
