      and i can vouch they stay in your head 42 years later. One of my best nights in musical theater (pardon me - i saw Sweeney when it opened) - but this was such an amazing allround strong cast with an amazing array of number - and yeah includ. Germans at the Spa and the Casanova-mini opera........are there any vids on those ?

    It puzzles me seeing Anita Morris and Raul Julia, both full of life here and to be snuffed out within 12 years, both of them. And how beautifully they performed. Passed same year 1994.

      RIP both of them

    Saw it in previews before the show got set. At one point, the lady of the spa danced with these big flowing curtains that took up the entire stage. Then saw it after it opened and the white drapes were gone and the Casanova part was expanded. Saw it again with Sergio and he was just as terrific as Raul. One of the greatest moments in theater was when the cast starting coming out in white costumes instead of black. Thrilling.

    I've seen many musicals on Broadway and "NINE" is hands down my favorite of all time. Am I'm writing this in 2023. I never cried the way I did when the curtain came down. I literally couldn't stand up right away, it affected me that much. The endlessly resourceful Tommy Tune developed a new theatrical language for telling the story.I enjoyed the revival also, but how could they leave out "The Germans At The Spa?" (Yes I know it doesn't advance the plot, but it established the Italian location and it's relationship to this other country who needed each other to survive culturally). I wasn't aware this delightful short piece of it was on line. Any chance of the full 12 minute "Grand Canal" sequence?

      Totally agreed, Tommy Tune or someone should stage the original show again - THAT should be the film version - not that ...uhm, abomination, sorry had to say it.

    I've had this cast singing in my head for almost 40 years and I finally can see a little of what it actually looked like. Thank you! That final moment of the show took my breath away. Wish I could see the whole thing....

    I remember when it opened -- just UNDER that season's Tony deadline. Of course, it went on to win the Tony for Best Musical that year. In May 1982, I was in fourth grade and I was a very precocious theater junkie! I revere Yeston's score. I so wish I could've seen this live, w/its orig. cast.

      Yes, I believe it opened as the final show before the cut-off date for Tony eligibility, a Sunday night. And conveniently the date was the "9"th. I was at the final preview and that was quite a night.

    I grew up watching touring companies come to San Diego doing “traditional” musicals so this was my very first show I saw on Broadway during my college interview at NYU. It was a visual feast & special musical with shocking Anita Morris being a sexy delight while Raul Julia was phenomenal & those white doves at the end, but it mostly went over my young naive head; fortunately, I’ve grown to understand the mature relationships & appreciate the wonderful score. So happy to see this - Thank you for sharing

    Absolutely remarkable. I wonder about Karen Akers’s alternate note here - on “tread,” and “bread” - not as written and not as on the cast recording/revival. It’s a hard note as written - I wonder if she implemented it or Yeston. She’s absolutely fabulous either way.

    • @auroraspiderwoman5886
      @auroraspiderwoman5886  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My recollection is that Yeston wanted Akers to sing that note as she does on the cast recording, but she was more comfortable with or preferred singing the note you hear in this live performance. I actually prefer the lower option, but maybe that's because I heard it live several times before the recording came out.

    It will forever be one of my favorite musicals. There is something about this score that takes you places - Maury Yeston’s score is one of a kind! This cast was perfection. How he lost the Tony will always baffle me - but it was one of the all time great showdowns between productions that year. What an absolute treat this was today - thank you so much Spiderwoman!!!

    • @auroraspiderwoman5886
      @auroraspiderwoman5886  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, I'm glad I didn't have to vote in the musical categories for that year's Tonys. And doubt we'll ever again hear a score quite as lush and glorious as this one.

      I so agree!! I find the score to this show one of the absolutely most beautiful I’ve ever heard. I am blessed to have seen the original cast in 1982. It was a theatrical experience that was a bit bizarre to me - the staging, the story, the music - but it left an indelible mark on my memory.

    Amazing production, again so lucky i got to see it, like this, with that army of talent. Now wondering if there is somewhere a tape or vid of the entire Casanova-mini operetta ? I loved all that, but......it sort of vanished from productions or am i totally wrong there ?

    Do you have anything of performer Jonny Wexler? He experienced extreme back injuries causing him to have disability. He underwent several surgeries that have been unsuccessful, including one earlier this year.
