    Thank you for this video. I went to rock auto online and ordered a new drive shaft for my 2003 forester, it arrived 2 days early, costs only $302.00. I was quoted a total of $800.00 to $1000.00 to have a shop replace it. All 110 lbs of me did it myself. It was so easy, if there’s a will there’s a way. Plus I saved hundreds of dollars! Who needs a man 😂.
    Thanks again. 👍🏼

    Thanks for the detailed video. The U-joints actually are serviceable with a press and a drill press to clean up the bearing bores. The new ones can be re-swedged once or grooved for circlips. However replacing the entire driveshaft with a one-piece unit is really a great option...

    Hey Mr. Subaru can't thank you enough for this video, you saved me from purchasing a faulty used driveshaft to install on my vehicle! QUESTION: Usually I prefer good junkyard parts to re-manufactured but i cant find any so in this case would you recommend for or against using a re-manufactured driveshaft?

    my stepson just got home. his 04 forester was making a wretched racket. we got the prop shaft out (piece of cake) and that u-joint was literally missing little pieces! how did it not explode? I'll pickup a used one today. thanks for another great video!

  • @writerjmd
    @writerjmd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    A little caution to those watching this. I would recommend putting in a new trans rear seal in before putting in a new shaft. I was not careful when I re-installed my driveshaft (plus it was late and dark and I was tired) and I damaged my seal. Put the whole thing back together and drove it to pick up some things across town and lost almost all my trans fluid. Fortunately I realize I was blowing a lot of smoke and stopped before doing damage. Ordered a new seal from Lancaster County Motors for $10 and now I have to do it over again.
    One other thing....those 6 bolts on that back cover were incredibly hard to get out. One requires a U joint to get at since you cant go straight in. I wasn't going to bother with the air impact gun, but even that struggled to get them out. I cleaned the bolts with metric die and the nuts with a tap before putting it back together. They were 10 X 1.50 I think.

    Great video and the process is the exact same for a 2003 forester? ( read in previous comments it was for the 2001 forester) Is there anything specific action that can cause the u joints to fail? Like dropping the clutch, downshifting too much or maybe driving on rough roads too much before replacing front shocks (too rough a ride for too long?) just curious as to if this repair can be avoided in the future. My chassis has 188,000 miles on it. New motor, amongst other things. So I can see myself having to systematically replace suspension parts, opposed to buying another used car. My body and interior are in excellent shape and I’ve replaced (or had some else replace) many misc. parts over the past two years (new motor, front shocks, clutch assembly, starter, Bank 1 sensor 1, fuel pump, new front brakes and rotors, hood, headlights , quarter panel, rear door, etc) so at this point I’ve got too much invested to NOT repair it....

  • @Der_Dampfmann
    @Der_Dampfmann 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Trying to diagnose mysterious noise on '05 Outback. Replaced brakes (needed) and both axles and bearings. Noise persists. Starting to think it may be the u-joint in the propeller shaft. I hear the following noises: When just starting car first thing in morning, I hear what sounds like rubber making a rubbing noise. Kinda a groan. Then while driving I hear intermittent screech/whir. When the noise stops, it usually does so with an abrupt clunk. Most noticeable at lower speeds. I know it's hard to describe and diagnose noises, but I'm trying to save some money before replacing driveshaft. Thanks! Great videos.

    • @MrSubaru1387
      @MrSubaru1387  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Best thing to do at this point would be to securely get the car off the ground on 4 jackstands and have someone drive it as you observe the drivetrain. Or, better yet, do the same on a lift, even if you have to pay someone to do it. Much safer option, but the jack stands will work with extreme caution.

    Are you supposed to grease the front yolk before slipping it back in? I read on some cars if the yolk is not lubricated well then it can end up binding and causing vibrations. When I pulled out my driveshaft I was expecting a bunch of fluid to leak out and the yolk to be covered in oil but that wasn't the case. It was almost like a thin film.

    I have a similar problem with my 09 Impreza Outback Sport. (hatch, non-turbo, Auto Trans.) After car sits all night, if outside temp is below 60 degree F, I have a shudder/vibration from rear of car. Not felt in steering. After you drive the car 4-5 miles, it goes away. Everything fine. It's worse in the winter with really cold temps. Even if I let the engine warm up to operating temp before driving, it still happens. Not engine related. Weird that the shudder goes away after whatever it is gets 'warmed up'. I would think it would be the opposite.

    Hey guys, I've got 2015 Forester, 2.0 D automat, 90km on the clock and started having squeaky noise coming from the propeller shaft. The servise man told me, after consulting with the Subaru dealer, that the problem is the bearing in the center support. The noise is more apparent when driving in cold or in the morning. He got the whole shaft removed and called me that even the U-joints are stiffed a apparently the central support bearing is not replaceable. Wanted to ask a couple of questions:
    1) could you point me to any compatibility table so we can eventually take a fully comparable shaft from a different Subaru. The Czech republic is rather a small market so need to explore the interchanging options.
    2) An experience with such a problem?
    3) If yes, what did you do? Replace the whole shaft, replace U-joints, replaced the bearing (if even possible)?
    Thanks a lot. David

    So I definitely get a clunk when taking off at a stoplight sometimes. I also get a rattle sound when going uphill in the mountains, like a clicking rattle, sort of like a bad CV clicking but it's not those. could that be the shaft as well? Here is my experience. I was going to try and replace the u-joints (2), but was advised by a reputable drive shaft builder who makes custom driveshafts for 4-wheel drive vehicles that it is not worth the trouble. He said I would likely run into some balancing issues and the j-joints with clips on inside are not as strong. Several mechanics told me they are not considered replaceable. Not to say it cannot be done as in video. I did remove front u-joint without a hydraulic press (not recommended) which took a lot of time and pounding. Even after grinding staked divots with a Dremel. For the time and effort, I recommend getting a rebuilt driveshaft with the clips on the outside of the u-joints. The u-joints are then easily replaceable if needed in the future. Cost to me was about $375 from wholesaleimportparts.com. Only took two days to be shipped (free) from socal to northern calif. There were some minor differences when new shaft compared to old one, but when installed everything went into place. I did put in a new differential seal, but must have dinged it installing new shaft. Now my daughter said it is leaking differential oil onto cat converter (not good). The teeth on the driveshaft must align with the differential shaft when sliding the driveshaft yoke over the diff shaft. There are two slots on the diff shaft that must align. Even after marking the shaft and diff housing, the gears in the diff can rotate out of place. It was handy having the yoke from the old shaft apart from the driveshaft to help align the two, and then to use that for reference when inserting the new shaft. You really want to insert the new shaft straight in to help avoid distorting the new seal. There is a spring inside the seal which could be dislodged if knocking things around too much. Long story short, I now have to remove the new driveshaft and replace the seal I messed up. Should go much faster this time after doing the job once.

      Just received a shaft from WIP today. Wasn't supposed to be here until tomorrow. I hadn't thought of replacing the differential seal, but was wondering if there is a seal at the output of the transmission/transfer case. Since the front of the drive shaft is machined so smoothly, it seems like it's a sealing surface. Will check the manual tonight. I'd like to change the d/s out after work tomorrow.

  • @anastassianelson4119

    We have a 2019 Subaru Forester Sport and had a peculiar experience. I have lived up north and had my fair share of blizzards and sub-freezing weather but here in central Texas it isn't normal. Note* This was my first year with the subaru in such conditions. We had drove in slushy and heavy snow that caked to the under carriage. We got home where it sat outside in -3 F° weather overnight. The next morning we started up the car and it made a nasty scraping, growling, vibrating noise that rattled the hubs and I. It seemed to originate under the shifter and revvedin unison with the engine. I read that ice/snow can freeze around and in the drive shaft tunnel. Is this actually a thing? Is so what is the worst that can happen? It took awhile for that terrible ruckus to pass but it required us sitting for about an hour and when driving accidentally hitting some nasty pot holes to knock out what ever remained. I apologize for the long comment but I was freaking out, I love my Subaru.

However, recently I have had a lot of vibration & shuddering on the wheels when making tight turns (left or right). It is difficult to identify which wheels the noise or shudder comes from and I don't feel much through the steering wheel. For those watching this and about to attempt the job DO NOT BUY NON OEM there is just no reason to buy non OEM for this job you will regret it so much. (I own a 2006 outback base model 2.5l 4speed AT)
    Just want to comment on this video specifically because I was told by my mechanic to replace the driveshaft (big mistake) which in the end did not need to be done haha. I bought a cheap chinese one for 275 and it was not balanced (did trans mount during this time). Put back on my old OEM one with 160k on it and in doing so ruined the seal and caused a leak so I got an OEM 101k miles with better joints and replaced the seal.
