    The "distance bug" is most likely an intended mechanic that was implemented a long time ago to prevent champions from simply stopping immediately at maximum range, getting that range broken, and ending up getting the attack input cancelled or getting some weird stutter-step chase. Basically a mechanic to improve overall kiting intuitiveness and fluidity. From what I can tell, you can basically think of it as an "inner" maximum attack radius that functions separately from a champion's normal maximum attack radius, that kicks into effect when an attack is inputted too quickly after a movement command, while the next attack is still on cooldown.
    As far as kiting goes, you prevent it or correct for it with the methods I discussed in the video, but that's the most likely explanation for the behavior itself.

    hey phylaris, about the distance bug. It seems that you think its a bug, while it is actually a feature. IIRC your right click is encoded to do that. That's why when you use a-click or attack move click, when you are already on your auto range, it will stop then issue your auto, unlike right clicking.

    • @Phylaris
      @Phylaris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no difference between right click and A-click/attack move click when it comes to this. They function the same way - if your attack is on delay when you input your attack command and you're further than the "inner range," you'll walk forward until you reach the inner range or your attack is ready, whichever comes first. I used attack move click for almost all of the clips in this video. If you're closer than the inner radius, then you'll kite back as expected with no walk back inwards until you pass the inner radius, at which point the walk-in will occur. I think the inner radius is some set percentage of your maximum attack radius, as it seems to scale somewhat proportionally to the max attack range of each champion, but I'm not exactly sure.
      Whether it's a bug or feature, I don't know - I just called it the distance bug for the sake of convenience, since I don't know of an existing term for it. Whether it's intentional or not, it's definitely a little bit unintuitive and good to account for while kiting.

    • @staxor
      @staxor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Phylaris I remember that a few years ago people were talking about this on the old forums, it was confirmed as intended, it works that way so you don't stop at your maximum range while chasing people and they get out of your auto range while you are starting your animation, back then when people were shit and didn't know how to attack>move it was a great way to make the game feel less clunky, also, if I remember correctly ranged champs don't work that way, they always stop at their maximum range but I'm not 100% sure on that one

    • @Phylaris
      @Phylaris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@staxor It does indeed happen with ranged champions as well, though it's not nearly as relevant when it comes to actual impact.
      I'm not too sure what determines the difference between a champion's max attack radius and its inner attack radius, though. Some champions seem to suffer a bit more noticeably than others, but it's pretty hard to measure from an eyeball test.
      It's great to know it's intended, though - thanks for letting me know. That explanation makes a lot of sense, especially in the context of older League when auto-attack projectiles still went out but did no damage if attacks were cancelled too quickly.

    Great informative educational video, thanks. I assume that some of these mechanics might be more difficult to apply in the same way for certain champions? For example, Zac, where sometimes if you are attacking from your maximum attack range, your W seems to be out of range to hit the camp.

    • @Phylaris
      @Phylaris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zac and Hecarim are both annoying in the same way. Hecarim's Q and Zac's W ranges are both smaller than their respective attack ranges by a very slim margin, so you have to adjust your positioning for that at times.

  • @LegionaireSoar
    @LegionaireSoar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Isn't it the CD of your AA? If your Auto Attack is on cooldown then it will keep moving towards it's last input - the place you right clicked - and when your CD comes back up it executes the attack.

    • @Phylaris
      @Phylaris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. There's an "inner" maximum attack range. If you reach this range before your next autoattack is up, your champion will simply stop and wait there until the autoattack is ready. It's easy to check if you hop on a champion with medium range like Urgot, as the inner stopping distance will be very apparent.

    is the distance bug not avoidable by using attack move click? I'm pretty sure that doesn't force any movement regardless of AA cooldown, as long as a target is within your maximum range

    • @Phylaris
      @Phylaris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. I use it very regularly while kiting. There's nothing you can really do to avoid this from occurring if you input your attack too early.

  • @tokyopapillon837
    @tokyopapillon837 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does attack move mean that your champion will stop at maximum range for an auto or will you keep moving till the auto is up?

    • @Phylaris
      @Phylaris  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Functions same way as right click. You'll keep moving inward. You don't move inward indefinitely - there's an "inner" range limit at which your champion will stop even if your next auto isn't up yet.

    Im pretty sure this happens because your "move and attack" input just makes you move until you can attack again.

    • @Phylaris
      @Phylaris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you can try with right click or any other attack input with various timings. Every champion has a maximum attack radius, but also a set "inner" attack radius. When you input an attack too quickly while kiting, your character will walk inward either until it meets the inner attack radius or the autoattack is ready, whichever comes first.
      You can visually test this by hopping on a mid-distance character like Urgot and going auto>kite>auto input in very quick succession. His medium range makes it very easy to tell that he walks up to the inner attack radius and stops there until his auto is ready.
      Additionally, if you start your kite from inside of this radius rather than outside, there will be no movement at all. You'll just auto, kite back, and as soon as you input your attack your model will stop moving. So there's a completely set inner radius off of which attack inputs made too quickly function.
      From what I've been told from some older players, this is most likely an intended mechanic that was implemented a long time ago to prevent champions from simply stopping at maximum range, getting that range broken immediately, and ending up getting the attack input cancelled or getting some weird stutter-step chase.

    • @tostupidforname
      @tostupidforname 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Phylaris True i just skimmed over the inner attack radius because it seemed to intuitive to me. Maybe it is when the hitboxes of the champions touch or something? Just speculation ofcause.
      I agree that it is an intendet mechanic to prevent stutter stepping since it is why i even wrote my comment but it was pretty poorely written :D

Not that every jungler that doesn't even play ranked would absolutely need to understand this utterly and in depth, but it helps tremendously to be simply awakened to the existence of such mechanics as the distance bug. Also, you sound like it's 50 minute video or something. It's just 10 minutes.

      You don't really need to Krugs dance on all champions. It's purely used to save health, which isn't too relevant in a lot of cases because the champions end up pretty much full health at Raptors anyway. I just don't really bother on Viego because he clears with full health by Raps, and the medium Krug bugging around tends to make your Q miss it sometimes. Granted the Krugs clear in the Viego clip at the start is pretty sloppy anyway, lmao.
      I'd also note that Krugs dancing isn't always the best way to save health on some champions. Forced creepblocking via bend-pulls saves more health than Krugs dancing can in many cases, because you can avoid damage from the big Krug rather than the medium Krug. This is an older video, but it's a good example of this being used - th-cam.com/video/aEEmNdur4dc/w-d-xo.html.
