Best advice I ever got. When squeezing the release think “ok pull a little more but DONT let it go off. Pull a little more but DONT let it go off.” Then thwap it goes with a surprise. You are still controlling “when” you release but the millisecond that it happens will be a surprise. Instead of thinking about it “going off/releasing” you are thinking about it NOT releasing. Psychologically works awesome.
Went through a bad spell of target panic and trigger panic (I’dcall them different things) but 2 years ago I messed up a shot on a nice buck and it broke my archery spirit so I broke out TH-cam and went down the rabbit hole completely changed bow arrows whole 9 went from a tru fire patriot to a untraview hinge 2 I worked like hell but I finally beat the panic I had I still hunt with the hinge it really makes you think about what you need to do like you set the pin where you want it and instead of JUST PULL THE TRIGGER it’s a breath pull pull pull bam it goes off and everything is a surprise it’s really brought back the love for bow hunting that I had when I first started I’m now more confident than ever!
Dude, I love the honesty and the ability to be able to see exactly where you came unstuck from the video content is amazing. The story is so similar to me and my fellow hunters, and I recently felt the most consistent with the hinge and resistance release. Love your videos brother and thanks again for all the content you and the boys put out.
A Resistance release helped me a lot. I felt more comfortable with an index as far as anchoring so I got the Noc On Back Strap. It feels so good to be calm in the shooting process and feel the clean break of a proper release. Awesome video of you struggling with the same issues I had and what you did to overcome target panic.
Great video! I'm going through the same experience as we speak. I've shot a thumb release for many years with some good success however, recently, I've developed some bad habits and started punching the trigger. Made a bad shot on a bear at 10 yards because I rushed the shot. I switched to a Carter Evolution resistance release and love it. I was questioning wether to hunt elk with it this fall. Your video has encouraged me to stick with it and give it a try. No one wants to share their target panic stories, I appreciate you doing so as well as proving resistance and hinge releases can work for hunting. Keep up the good work, great content!
Thank you for the positive feedback! If you feel comfortable and confident with the resistance, I wouldn’t hesitate to use it for hunting this fall! Just remember it may go off faster with adrenaline. I increased mine 2-3lbs for hunting and that seems about right for me! But be careful not to increase it too much where it’s hard to execute after a long hard backcountry hunt
I m only just starting my compound journey but I watched all of the early target panic videos by Josh. I'm shooting the Stan Perfex resistance release at 10yds. Just getting used to it after getting ground down shooting barebow. Enjoying the surprise shot now with the Stan release. Thanks for the videos.
I was and am in the same boat Micah!!! I saw the tp video with Josh, bought an Onnex Resistance release and went through the process!!! It works!!! I still shoot blankbale a few times a week. I can shoot the Resistance, thumb or a trigger, but I practice alot with blank bale, and close yardage!!! I pay more attention to the shot process rather than where the pin is!!!!!
Same here. Trigger equals punch for me. I shoot truball sweetspot. Also same release you are. Just purchased a ultraview hinge 2. Good luck love this channel.
Much appreciated. I just started with a resistance release and weird feeling as I built up trust (60 shots or so) but now I really like it. Still working on building enough trust for hunting situations.
Great video, your experiences with Target Panic are similar to mine.I shoot the Stan Onyx resistance release throughout the year but use my hinge for hunting. I appreciate your insight on this subject.
I’ve got target panic really bad and I’ve been shooting a back tension for a couple days and I’m feeling like I’m getting over it! For some reason I can actually aim with a back tension. So glad I bought one. Not a good time to get target panic two weeks before a hunt…
Oh wow, thank you for sharing. I am almost giving up on archery. Target Panic has been ruining my archery journey for the last year and half. I have broken three bows with my releases flying across my bows. I only doing Target and 3D archery. I have looked at the mention video related to the process, hoping this will help me. THe only thing I am not to really understand is how to pull with the elbow or the back. If you guys have time to demonstrate in video the movement, from behind maybe that would help me. Thanks again. Kind regards MH
Think of it as you are pulling the bow apart at full draw. You are doing this by building the pressure against the release by pulling your elbow straight back. Think of it like a string tied to the end of your elbow going through your forearm and arrow all the way to the target. Your job is to continue building pressure against that string by pulling your elbow straight back until the string breaks (bow fires). Hopefully this is a way to think about it that can help you, otherwise, it’s extremely difficult to show without working with you directly in person. Hope this helps! Stick with it, you can do it!!
Wish I could afford a nice release like you have I have bad target panic still need to paper tune my bow still went out today to shoot dead on at 20 30 6ards was terrible 8 8nch gruop I'm getting frustrated over it all
I really liked this video. You were transparent about your struggle and that allows you to help others. I’m wondering… I seen as you progressed you had a fair amount of weight on your stab for hunting. Is that related to the float as you are shooting a more dynamic shot?
Great video brother. Also, looks like both of you guys are getting jacked! Putting in a lot more gym time with and emphasis on muscle building, I see. 👊🏼
Really liking your guys videos. I've hit good my entire bowhunting career. But shot bad. If that makes sense. Recently I changed from a wrist trigger style to a ultra 3 hinge. I literally shot 20 shots with the hinge and went right to 3d range. Not the best idea probably. But I quickly felt really good with it and thought I'd stay in the 30yd distance. So off I went to 3d range. 20 targets later I shot a 6inch 3 shot group into a caribou at 80 yds. So loving how I had pin control and a surprise releases. However, did not like how the hinge attached to my loop. Thinking I could get in trouble in a hunting situation. Then I watch your video on Resistance releases. And really felt like that was the release I needed. Ordered a Stan onnex resistance release.( which clips on loop for hunting) Have only 100 shots with it at 10 yds. But absolutely love it. I must still be slightly inconsistent with it because it breaks easier and then harder from shot to shot. But I actually appreciate that. Keeps me on bullseye from the moment I reach my backwall until it releases. Which is always a surprise. I fully anticipate getting a better feel the more I use it. Once again..really like the videos. Keep them coming.
This is the story of thousands of archers. Trigger releases have ruined more new archers than anything IMO. BEEN there done that. I wished every new archer could see those learning videos Josh made BEFORE buying a release. If people would commit to trying the techniques in those videos their archery experiences would be so much better.
I see you've stuck to the Nitrum for years as well, what was your reason for not upgrading? Do you still think it's that good? I upgraded only this year, my Nitrum has had 8 trusty years and I'm not letting go of it either.
Great video! I made the decision this past January to commit to back tension, and ditch my trigger release. Do you have an email? I’d like to share my story with ya.
I currently shoot the Ultraview Hinge, I have shot the Hinge 2 as well and they are somewhat comparable. I have not shot the HBC Flex but I know TRU Ball makes quality hinge releases so I think you would be happy with either of those two options you mentioned!
@jasonparks389 Yes the Hinge 2 does have some nice adjustment features. It does have a longer neck compared to some releases but it’s all personal preference in my opinion, I would see if you can shoot multiple and figure out which one fits you best
Yes, it absolutely would if you learn to shoot it right. It forces you to commit to your shot which can be transferred over to other types of releases.
Although the backstrap would compare most to your like Mike, I recommend a handheld resistance release as I’ve personally found a wrist strap to be much harder to feel the pressure increase on your wrist versus against your fingers like a hand held. With that said, either the nock on backstrap or a handheld resistance release would be beneficial as long as you learn to execute it properly.
I would pay to have you or Josh help me with my target panic. Help would be greatly appreciated to be able to talk with someone that knows and that has been there would help. I have no one to talk to about this. Thanks
The Stan Onnex Clicker is another great release that uses mechanical means to help put your thinking in the execution to help overcome target panic. With that said, it doesn’t give you the negative feedback that a bad shot on a resistance release does. This is both good and bad depending on the situation. The negative feedback helps to reinforce good execution and good shots, although you don’t want it happening on an animal. Keep in mind that every archer is different so there’s no one size fits all, but the onnex clicker is an amazing tool if used correctly. Overall it isn’t as effective as a learning tool for proper shot execution as the resistance release is. Both will help you, but it’s still on you to learn them correctly to execute them properly.
What you’ve experienced ain’t the release’s fault, it’s yours. I see folks blame their mistakes on their equipment all the time. “Target panic” is between your ears. There’s nothing wrong with an index release.
You are absolutely right! It’s never the releases fault. The resistance release is just an incredible tool that forces you to put your thought where it needs to go to keep the bad habits previously formed from happening. There is nothing wrong with an index release at all. Any release style can be shot similar to a resistance release. This however is the only release that forces you to do it right.
Best advice I ever got. When squeezing the release think “ok pull a little more but DONT let it go off. Pull a little more but DONT let it go off.” Then thwap it goes with a surprise.

Excellent video. We only learn from our mistakes. It really takes balls to let people learn from your failures. You earned my respect today

A hinge saved archery for me. Took me forever to finally break down and try one. Thank God I did!!

Pick up another resistance release for practice. I know they aren’t cheap but it’s just a thought. Great video 👊🏼

Yes we will!

I upgraded only this year, my Nitrum has had 8 trusty years and I'm not letting go of it either.

Nitrum 30!
Not being able to hunt with a thumb release….felt that.

Which tension release were you using at that TAC! I’ve never shot one and the one you used seemed phenomenal in use
Stan Perfex Resistance heavy metal!
Which hinge would you recommend I’m looking at the hinge 2 and the hbc flex have you used either of these ?

What about the new Stan ones clicker
The Stan Onnex Clicker is another great release that uses mechanical means to help put your thinking in the execution to help overcome target panic. Doesnt sound like you beat target panic. If you beat it, you should be able to shoot any release
