It's always tickled me that Magus doesn't seem to get that you essentially save his life by challenging him here and disrupting his spell. My head canon has long been that while he doesn't say it directly, he puts this together after Magus drains his powers at the Ocean Palace and then kills Crono. His hash words about Crono, I read, as being ruefully about HIMSELF. His failures have him in a self destructive state, hence him provoking a fight he knows he can't win - by all logic, the party matched him in his lair, and since then he's been diminished while they've grown stronger. Frog can literally solo him in this state, and he is intelligent and calculating enough to know that. So my read on it is that when he is making fun of Crono, he is admitting that he himself SHOULD be dead...and by this point knows enough about the group and Lavos' nature (having seen his mother's cult with adult eyes and growing up in the future) to deduce that without the time travelers stepping in... There's no way his quest for revenge succeeded. He has to pass through this nihilistic moment of despair (and be spared by the party) to start looking at things from a different lens and defying destiny. He may not be all sunshine and save the planet, but he does shift from revenge to "can I free my sister?" As well as being a wholly dependable ally for team Crono. Sry for the long comment lol
I do love how Frog interjects with his own lyrics at various points of the song-it really does add a clashing element to this, emphasizing the fact that this battle is strictly between Frog and Magus. Chrono and Co. are simply there to help Frog win the fight and save the day.
And he never even needed them to begin with... In the original timeline Frog wins even without the masamune which could not have been formed without time travel, yet the future still says Glenn won. Pretty amazing tbh

That was fantastic! The voice cast once again proves how perfect they are for their parts. And you got Magus spot on! I always love these songs, they’ve made my life better tbh.
I LOVE this part of the game! It feels like a big climactic final boss, but little does a first-time player know, this is _far_ from the end. Also, the quests leading up to this feel _totally_ meaningful, rather than a mere time-wasters, since we know that, without Spekkio's help, we never would have gained the magic needed to fight Magus. Without going to the Denadoro mountains, and Ioka village, we never would have gotten the Masamune, which is of critical importance for lowering Magus's magic defense! Even with all of that, Magus repeatedly shifts his magical barrier's orientation, so the player cannot rely blindly on repeating a simple, naive pattern of moves; they must pay attention and quickly adjust tactics to match Magus. The player can feel how this battle serves as a culmination of everything that they have worked to achieve thus far, and it feels _incredible!_
Oh, this is one of my favorite tracks in the game. Magus's story in Chrono Trigger is one of the more tragic ones (not THE most, but still very tragic), and I was able to tell in his singing despite him attempting to be dark and suave. Seriously, his voice is PERFECT. Seriously, you blew yourselves out of the water with this one.
I only wish I could get my voice to go that low. This is a killer villain song. The harmonies were great. The contrast between Magus and Frog were distinct but didn’t make the song sound cluttered. And as usual, the art was lovely. Nice job everybody!
Funny thing? First time I fought Magus, he cast one spell and Chrono and Robo were one-shot. I ended up 1v1ing Magus with Frog, and won with a lot of healing. Really unintentional but hella cool way to do the fight essentially the same way it had already happened, except Frog having the masamune an' all.
When listening and not looking at the video itself I imagine a one on one duel, Frog vs Magus, while Chrono and Lucca are forced to watch from the sidelines by the "Black Wind" he summons when he says he hopes nobody interferes. Idk just seems much cooler to me
You showed exactly why this is firmly my absolute favourite boss ever! I couldn't be happier. I've only found out about your channel this week thanks to a lucky youtube suggestion but waiting for this song felt like forever. It's just exactly how I imagined that battle comparing it to the music's pace.
I mean I usually hate the new Final Fantasy's approach to battles but that's basically how I imagine this one, I feel like this one would work great if you could have everyone else in your party not controlled by an AI. Like a coop only Dark Souls. It would be so epic! And This is why. Or maybe like in the original where while they're in cool down they're just standing there and you can switch who you're controlling. I just feel like it would be epic if you needed to dodge so it feels like a serious battle. But it's already great, it's just that it gets less easy to remember why it felt so great when you're replaying the game for the tenth time. I remember how cool this boss felt the first time but now it feels so easy. But the first time is the only one that matters so it's still great.
I do believe that this musical is really amazing. Because Magus and Frog is sort of in bad mood with each other, but they are still relavent to each other. I really love the part where you putted the frog's theme in the middle of magus's theme, and i feel like you guys did amazing job on this song! When i first saw this on my notification box, i literally freaked out and couldn't wait to check it out. Since Magus's theme was my most favorite theme. However, this was far over my expectation! It is really great, and thank you for creating this cover! ((sorry for my poor eng skills... :(
@@AuroraFirestorm To be honest I hate Toriyama's lack of character design more than his artstyle. You can break most of his characters down into 3 or 4 basic designs.
Well this was the perfect thing to start the morning off to. This project is just absolutely incredible to me. The art combined with the lyrics and the amount of effort and passion felt behind the vocals is just so incredible. Hearing all these renditions and the flair this project brings to it just makes me love of this classic grow more and more and I can't wait to hear what comes next
I don't know if it was intentional, but I have to say I really like how you set up Magus' first lyrics- putting this fight aside, the first two lines carry more weight to this, and what would come after Lavos eventual defeat. Whereas Crono and his friends raced through time to put an end to Lavos, the torch they would pass to Serge and his companions as they sought to break the chains of fate and vengeance forged by Lavos, who would re-emerge as the Time Devourer. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I could not help but think this . You really captured this clash of ideals to a standard of awesomeness. I'll check out the other songs when I find time to. :)
STEVEEEEEEEN, god your voice is like the perfect cupcake that I want to eat over and over, and Darby’s voice is the sprinkles that make it even more perfect 💖💖💖
And that was ultimately what defeated him in the end; his desire to solely do it himself. Up until he joined Crono, he had alienated all his other potential allies who could've helped him to directly stand against Lavos.
I swear, each song in this musical gets better and and better each time. Steven absolutely nailed his role as Magus, and Darby never ceases to surprise me with his vocals! (And I still barely know anything about Chrono Trigger, but I still roll with it...)
Everything that could be said about this, has already been said. You made a great song even greater with these lyrics. I re-watched this several times before moving on through the playlist!
What makes this scene is so powerful is that it expresses a profound dichotomy of human existence: Not between "good" and "evil" but between "nihilism" and "purpose". One either accepts that "life has no meaning as all will be dust" or chooses to believe that "life and existence is meaningful in and of itself". No side is strictly right or wrong here.
This one just might be my favorite song of the whole musical. I already love "Battle with Magus" on it's own, and you just made it better. Frog and Magus' duet was incredible, and I love all the little callbacks, specially "the future refuses change". Not to mention the very lovely art, those expressions, colors and poses are all of great quality. Very good job!
I loved the original cover. But I admit to wondering if the lyrics were going to stay the same, because they were good lyrics for the *concept* of magus. A good cover celebrating him as a character. But didn't feel like they would have fit this scene. Perhaps a different one? I wouldn't be surprised if we get a reprise or another usage of the theme for another scene, but it didn't feel like a battle scene. I was pleasantly surprised to be right, and I gotta say, I absolutely ADORE the new lyrics. There are so many double meanings in these if you are aware of magus' backstory and motivations, and the addition of frog's melody and part play up the rivalry between the two, and add to the "boss fight" feel. I'm very glad that we've been getting more, interactive? boss themes, with our heroes getting to participate, especially when they have a connection as frog does here. I noticed it in the yakra fight, and I wonder if this will become a common theme? The addition of the chorus here is lovely, as usual, adding to the dramatic moment.and almost calling forward to Lavos' theme, although due to our hero's interruption, the ritual isn't completed, so it's just an echo of the future. I knew Steven's voice for magus would be amazing from the trailer, but this is even more fitting than what I'd expected. IT's just...powerful and commanding. Just as you would have expected from the charismatic leader of an army, but with the dark undertone of magus' sort of edgy persona. I love the way he sort of almost-but-not quite growls out, "Again, the bitter black wind begins to howl..." The art is amazing,as per usual from juno. I love magus' expression in his spellcasting pose, as well as the wild movement of his fair and tattered cape gave the scene a sensation of buffeting wind being thrown off from the gathering magic. The added visual effects here are great. The magic circle was spot on, and felt like it belonged there. The black smoke afterward was also another good touch. It's honestly my favorite of the three, but the later two are great as well. I could feel the force of the blow against frog's shield thanks to his strong stance and posing (although I couldn't help but giggle when I noticed his whiskers looked almost like a lil mustache) and you can see both magus' confidence, and frog's determination in the final image, as they continue to rush at each other. Frog's design is very comical, but in this one especially juno's made him feel strong and heroic, the tears and rips in his clothing, and the clenched teeth selling the emotion there wonderfully~ This song is definitely up there as one of my favorites. Although lets be real. They all pretty much are XD Can't wait to see what's next!
I seriously hope that this theme will reappear again with Queen Zeal's fight. I can already imagine a duet between Steven and Linsday. That would be awesome
These are masterpieces of musical greatness, thank you for helping me relive my childhood and strengthening our willpower to be the heroes of our lives!
I saw that MOtI was doing this project, realised that I knew nothing about Chrono Trigger, and watched an entire Chrono Trigger playthrough so that I could understand this musical
This video and song are absolutely epic. I'd love to see a reprise of the song later with Frog and Magus dueling on North Cape. Perhaps even a variation of the story event. Have them spar for a bit, realize this fighting isn't solving anything and then decide to join up to save Crono and beat Lavos.
Ahhhhh! This is amazing! Steven Kelly's voice acting for Magus is brilliant! Also Darby voice acting is brilliant as ever as frog. Both of them singing is just ahhhhhh it's so great. The chorus does a fantastic job like always, keep up the great work chorus! Overall this piece was amazing and continue to keep up the great working moving on to more songs for the musical. I've enjoyed every piece so far so I can't wait for the next. Love you guys so much and thank you for creating this ❤❤❤
Well this was something to wake up to. Darby was fantastic as usual, but OH LORD STEVEN THAT MAGUS WAS AMAZING. Props to Juno too for the really good art. Honestly everything about this is perfect, and I now have a new favorite thing from this channel.
SOOOOO GOOOOOODDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I loooooooove it!!!!!!!!!!!! Steven’s portrayal of Magus is beyond amazing! The emphasized consonants really help to show how powerful Magus is. I can’t wait to hear more! Love the visual effects on this one, too!
Steven as Magus is so perfect such a beautiful tone both with the singign and voice acting exactly how I imagine Magus would be in my head, such superb acting!
Magus sounds so regal, which makes sense for the demon king. This is the first time I’ve heard this voice actor (apart from the trailer) and I love what I’ve heard so far.
Aaaaaah I've been looking forward to this one since I started the list and oh mah GAWD that is easily the best Magus voice that will ever exist. Just... oh mah stars it makes me quiver.
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!! This is my favorite song in the whole game and aaaaaaaaaaaaaagh! I was grinning the whole time Frog and Magus were perfect the lyrics are amazing and the art was gorgeous You can hear the rivalry between these two and the whole thing is so intense I just I loved this so so much
aaAA I've been looking forward to this for so long, and man I was not disappointed!! Ever since the promo video for this project was released, I was so pumped for this song, and you did it so well! Magus sounds so perfect, equally dark sounding and poised, and his singing is just incredible, especially those lower notes. And when the two melodies overlap, just,,ee!!! The "Lavos"s are so chilling and haunting, and overall the vocals are once again fantastic. And the art!! When the first picture showed up I was already in awe, but then the animations! I was surprised, and it was so cool to watch!! So in conclusion: AAAAAAA YOU ALL ARE TOO PERFECT
OMFG. This sounds like a cool villain song from classical Disney. I have only discovered this project today. Thanks a whole lot for amazing work to everyone involved!!!
I love how Frog's line of "Merely a wretch to be slain!" is timed perfectly to the sounds of his crit attack. It has the same rhythm as "Wretch to be slain" I wonder if it was intentional.
This was the first one of the the Chrono Trigger musical videos that I discovered. I found it completely by accident looking for the Battle With Magus track from the soundtrack, and I liked it so I looked for more. Now, that I’ve seen all the ones released so far, I appreciate this even more, as it effortlessly combines Battle With Magus, Frog’s Theme, and Lavos’ Theme together in a very thematically appropriate way. I purchased the DS version of Chrono Trigger a few months back after my friend streamed the SNES version on Twitch, but it wasn’t until this series that I really got around to actually playing it.
I'm currently playing Crono Trigger for the first time by myself and since i hadn't remembered the music, its great to hear it almost for the first time with these lyrics back in my head, thank you for that.
I'm eagerly anticipating the song when the party faces Lavos for the first time. I've played the game, so I know what happens, and I'm positive that you guys will capture the emotions of that scene PERFECTLY.
As much as I love Alex's version he did a while ago, this is beautiful. Great job on this one and all the others. I'm excited for the rest of the songs to come.
THIS IS AMAZING! I'm still kinda sad that I didn't get magus role but holy cow. How amazing his voice is this is by far the best song out of the musical and nothing can change my mind about that. Good on you!
Great job!! Very catchy! Hmm... Steven's singing style in this song seems to remind me of Phantom of the Opera for some reason... It's hard to explain it, sorta where he sing-talks he uses plenty of air, it adds a distinct whisper quality to it!😁 very unique!
I love how the video somewhat lines up with the lyrics. Frog: [you're] just a wretch to be slain! *nails Magus with a critical hit* And some of Magus' spells line up with his lyrics too (casts a fire spell as he mentions flames, for example) Whether intentional or not, nice touch.
Man. I hadn't realized how similar this was to MotI's Let The Battles Begin until it struck me that this is the iteration with Death's lines given more gravitas.

Nicely put. Some good boss battles are like a "final exam", where the player is forced to draw on what they've learned earlier in the game.
I know I'm a year late but I just love the idea of:
"We'll stop you Magus! It's a hero's duty to-"
*CRASH*
When listening and not looking at the video itself I imagine a one on one duel, Frog vs Magus, while Chrono and Lucca are forced to watch from the sidelines by the "Black Wind" he summons when he says he hopes nobody interferes. Idk just seems much cooler to me
"You are no thing to be feared, just a wretch to be slain!"
Love that line
Magus's theme was always one of my favorite themes. Juno's art is amazing.
Dont worry, you made no mistakes while writing this. Plus I get overexcited sometimes and screw up my grammar too, just a part of being a fan!
Your English skills are good. We can understand you, and your comment was insightful.
"Let us hope no others interfere this time."
As ginger Goku and purple haired Bulma stand there behind him, weapons drawn.
Ugh I hated the character art so much. DBZ style art is awful. Anything else, *anything.*
@@AuroraFirestorm To be honest I hate Toriyama's lack of character design more than his artstyle. You can break most of his characters down into 3 or 4 basic designs.
@@AuroraFirestorm bruh...
Okay but the parts at 1:36 2:48 and 4:00 give me serious chills their voices and the melodies work really well together
Muffin Cat ikr!
The artwork and Steven Kelly as Magus is truly amazing.
I love the inclusion of the lyrics of Frog's theme scattered throughout, and the chorus singing the coming of Lavos.
I don't know if it was intentional, but I have to say I really like how you set up Magus' first lyrics-
putting this fight aside, the first two lines carry more weight to this, and what would come after Lavos eventual defeat.
Whereas Crono and his friends raced through time to put an end to Lavos, the torch they would pass to
Serge and his companions as they sought to break the chains of fate and vengeance forged by Lavos, who would
re-emerge as the Time Devourer.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I could not help but think this . You really captured this clash of ideals to a standard of awesomeness. I'll check
out the other songs when I find time to. :)
WOW. As soon as this song started, I got a million goosebumps!!
Wow. Just wow. This is absolutely stunning.
STEVEEEEEEEN, god your voice is like the perfect cupcake that I want to eat over and over, and Darby’s voice is the sprinkles that make it even more perfect 💖💖💖
YES!!! MAGUS IS HERE!!!
Irok 121 YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY
This is incredible. Magus' theme never fails to give me chills and with such great lyrics on top of that *chef's kiss*
Finally the edgy boi is here and he brings the sexy voices
Agreed
I got serious lea mis/ phantom vibes

What an absolute Disney villain performance.
Paradoxically, Magus is not even a real villain... His goal was to save the world by defeating Lavos alone, but he was overconfident in his power.
And that was ultimately what defeated him in the end; his desire to solely do it himself. Up until he joined Crono, he had alienated all his other potential allies who could've helped him to directly stand against Lavos.
Magnus : let us hope no others interfere this time
While two other people are standing there
I swear, each song in this musical gets better and and better each time.
God those melodies are bliss
*i must have a moment of silence to honor the intense waiting I have endured for this song*
Ah, I’ve been excited for this.
Holy moly, I love this.
The art is amazing, the singing, the music, everything. Damn.
Magus was the true (anti?) hero of this setting. Were it not for him, there would be no way for Crono to come back.
The first time I heard this song I was blown away, you all did it justice with these lyrics and singing.
I love the way he sort of almost-but-not quite growls out, "Again, the bitter black wind begins to howl..."
The art is amazing,as per usual from juno. Frog's design is very comical, but in this one especially juno's made him feel strong and heroic, the tears and rips in his clothing, and the clenched teeth selling the emotion there wonderfully~
This song is definitely up there as one of my favorites. Although lets be real. They all pretty much are XD Can't wait to see what's next!
The original lyrics is better suited for queen zeal reprise of this.
I do hope there will be a reprise of this theme for the battle against Queen Zeal
I still can't believe there isn't a 1 hour version of this song yet, it's soooooooooooooooo good
I agree. This needs a 1 hour version.
Man, every song released has blown me away and just makes me hype to hear the rest. Fantastic job guys!
The black wind howls…
Wow! This is really impressive. Great lyrics and fantastic vocal performances.
I saw that MOtI was doing this project, realised that I knew nothing about Chrono Trigger, and watched an entire Chrono Trigger playthrough so that I could understand this musical
Andrew Neal Play it
Andrew Neal
I know just a bit of it, because I have played, i dunno, less that a minimal part of the game. (I went a bit further from the first boss)
I found out about it from the musical
Lavos same
Who's was it?
This video and song are absolutely epic. I'd love to see a reprise of the song later with Frog and Magus dueling on North Cape.
Perhaps even a variation of the story event. Have them spar for a bit, realize this fighting isn't solving anything and then decide to join up to save Crono and beat Lavos.
I love how this comment aged.
@@tentales10 I must say, I was pleasantly surprised haha.
Magus: Oh hey frog how are you?
Glenn: I'm good.
Also Glenn: PREPARE TO DIE!
I imagine that's just how they say good morning in the late game.
I just noticed that this is exactly half way through the soundtrack, like how this boss is the half way point of the game!
Steven as Magus is so perfect such a beautiful tone both with the singign and voice acting exactly how I imagine Magus would be in my head, such superb acting!
I think it’s SO cool that Lavos’s theme shows up for this song. It fits so well it’s scary. Excellent work!
Lavos Obviously, this is the most important part of the musical.
Ah, my favorite track since I was eight-years-old.
Lots of nostalgia.
Additionally, exceptionally well done!
Magus sounds so regal, which makes sense for the demon king. This is the first time I’ve heard this voice actor (apart from the trailer) and I love what I’ve heard so far.
Yet again another amazing post by MOTI great work guys!
The days of mispronounciation and typo comments will continue as Magus makes his debut
And the Masamune. And Frog, which as we all know is pronounced Slartibartfast
Man on the Internet yes, Slartibartfast, the hero who slain Mangusteenvania.
Man on the Internet Douglas Addams reference made my day!
Man on the Internet No no, Frog is pronounced Throatwobbler Mangrove
É not ay
Aaaaaah I've been looking forward to this one since I started the list and oh mah GAWD that is easily the best Magus voice that will ever exist. Just... oh mah stars it makes me quiver.
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!
This is my favorite song in the whole game and aaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!
I was grinning the whole time Frog and Magus were perfect the lyrics are amazing and the art was gorgeous
You can hear the rivalry between these two and the whole thing is so intense I just I loved this so so much
aaAA
I've been looking forward to this for so long, and man I was not disappointed!!
So in conclusion: AAAAAAA YOU ALL ARE TOO PERFECT
magus has the most GLORIOUS battle song! Very nice, Steve and Darby!
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS AND SWEET BABY JESUS I AM NOT DISAPPOINTED! THIS IS INCREDIBLE!
Omg the special effects, they are awesome
If someone happens to put Chrono Trigger on Broadway, they better use this song.
Fantastic work! This was always the standout moment of the game to me, and this definitely does it justice!
this was so amazing!!
the music
the art work
espacially the singing
They re singing is so amazing
steven and Darby make a good singing duo
HOLY CRAP DEM SMOKE EFFECTS!!!
Eargasm levels have reached a critical state ITS LEGIT A EARGASM!
I'm currently playing Crono Trigger for the first time by myself and since i hadn't remembered the music, its great to hear it almost for the first time with these lyrics back in my head, thank you for that.
That song is still one of the most awesome things I've ever heard
Awesome as always! I loved the art!
Oh my god this one blew me away ,I love it ,both was so harmonious , dramatic , epic, I love it
is no one else gonna say "Black winds form into a hurricane" this is basically a reference to the "Song of Storms" they did
Legit my all time favorite song from you guys. Keep up the good work!
This. Was. EPIC!!! Yet another song to be loved!
You guys NAILED this song down PERFECTLY! 😍😍😍
Woah! I have no words for this epicness. It was awesome!
*nails Magus with a critical hit*
And some of Magus' spells line up with his lyrics too (casts a fire spell as he mentions flames, for example)
Whether intentional or not, nice touch.
Man.
I hadn't realized how similar this was to MotI's Let The Battles Begin until it struck me that this is the iteration with Death's lines given more gravitas.
