    Both, are awesome Folders. But, because of my experience with Tri-Ad Folders and my experience with the SOG XR-Lock Folders, to include my SOG XR, I would choose the Large Recon 1. Especially, the Large Recon 1, Tanto... :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

    The 'elephant in the room' is the weight of the SOG. For some people 8oz won't be an issue, but for most people it surely is. Including the military.

    Recon 1 is my favorite. Tri ad lock, tanto/clip/spear point. It is the folder you want when SHTF. SOG makes me thing of Walmart.

    The Sog's 8 ounce weight kills it for me. Recon 1 for the win!

    • @Genethagenius
      @Genethagenius 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For reals!!! 8-ounce weight and twice the price of the Recon 1. Yup, I’m sticking with my Recon 1!

    • @firstlast2514
      @firstlast2514 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Genethagenius it's not twice the price. Close but not twice.
      Also it's made in the united states, so manufacturing price goes way up. That's where the price comes from.
      I'm not arguing with you my man. Just stating my piece, and joining the conversation.
      Much love to the knife community.

      SOG should've used hardened aluminum liners. Cold steel does that and it really helps.

    SOGzilla takes the cake! The 7ish oz weight really doesn't feel cumbersome. It's a masterpiece. And as far as a miracle budget cousin, don't let yourself miss out on the Harnds General and Warrior. And the Recon with the Snaggletooth mods make it a whole other animal, wow

    The Kiku XR with Micarta + XHP is a great knife. I'd take it over either of these.

    • @franksalem8580
      @franksalem8580 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Kiku is 2 inches shorter in overall length and 1 inch shorter in blade length. It has a recurve in the blade which I am not a fan of. Even if it was $75 cheaper I would not be interested.

    I have them both as well. My Recon 1 is a coated, hollow ground, cts-xhp clip point. And the Recon gets the nod fairly easily here.

    I have a sog seal XR and I am really fascinated, when you take it you feel its power, let alone those who see it, they are amazed to see it, I would choose sog again I think he is above the recon one by a lot, but at the same time and I would even dare to say that a bit lower than the SR1, it was due to the type of lock that cold sttel handles, which is undoubtedly the best type of lock.

  • @firstlast2514
    @firstlast2514 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just FYI the xr lock on the seal XR is weighted at almost 3000 pounds.
    The smaller XR locks are anywhere between 1500, and 2500 pounds.

    I had an older Recon 1 while deployed in Afghanistan, and I put it through some serious paces...It never blinked! Unsure of what happened to that particular blade, my present one is a newer version in s35Vn, and I think a better blade for my uses nowadays. I'd love to put the SOG through an outdoor weekend of shelter building & firemaking to see which is the larger beast.

  • @BrewCityRider
    @BrewCityRider 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'd love to have both! You didn't mention it, but the big difference in the cost is that the SOG is 100% made in the USA. I actually prefer thicker blade stock and heavier knives - just feels better and more substantial in hand to me. I can't pick a winner though because I don't have either one...yet!

    Holy crap, this are very comparable in their profile. I'm always watching knife reviews, and content. For some reason I never noticed how comparable they are.
    I almost got the SEAL XR.
    But I bought the SOG TAC-XR, and the Omega springs are so thin, and fragile. I had one snap in under a month. I exchanged it... Same thing happened, but it took about 5 weeks.
    I love the design and the idea of axis like locks. But I won't buy one again since my Benchmade springs broke as well.
    I wish they would use a compression spring like Spyderco's ball bearing lock.
    That SEAL XR is a helluva knife though.

    • @rampantcolt1684
      @rampantcolt1684 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some thing happened to my Seal XR... brand new and one of the Springs broke. SOG fixed it, but seriously... "SOG, USE BETTER SPRINGS"!!!!

      @@rampantcolt1684 yeah omega springs SUCK BALLS.
      I actually really really wanted that knife but I got the tac first, just to see how it held up. The knife was actually pretty good. But within three weeks the spring broke. I returned it and got a AD-15 lol.
      But the seal xr is one mean knife.

    Nice review. SOG fanboy that owns only one cold steel, being the Recon 1 and it is on my bug out chest rig which is mad props. I have abused that SOB (not SOG...get it). The CS gets massive nods in confidence. I want the Seal XR simply for one different reason...character. Always wants a folding seal pup I could carry and they finally built it imho. This beast is just different and has a vibe like many SOG blades. CS has their own vibe but more often than not its not my groove.

    For me a thumb stud cant be tactical. The flipper is the best for fast and secure opening. 2nd best is Spyderhole but at distance to flipper.

    For price and function I'd say the Recon 1 is probably a better choice as a folder, I've had my clip point version for a while now and it's never let me down. The SOG Seal in its XR Tanto fixed blade version though is an amazing knife and works excellent with gloves and in my opinion far better an investment than the XR for roughly the same price.

    The Recon 1 has a stronger lock and is significantly thinner & lighter than the SOG. For a tactical knife, the Cold Steel is the clear winner.

    I own both and the only drawback with the SOG is the springs... sooner or later they break. Be prepared to replace them. SOG is an Awesome knife though. Very rugged.
    CS Recon is much lighter in the pocket and the lock is bombproof.

  • @nickmegadeth6633

    The triad lock is too slow to open and close. For a tactical folder I'd for the sog. As a camping knife the recon maybe a little better. I never liked the designs of cold steel except for the srk wich I've owned some. Sog is closer to my taste and it's good that they are producing quality stuff these days.

    I don’t own any Cold Steel knives and I want to but I’m so used to Benchmade and Spyderco but also the pocket clips on those knives are awesome but I am wondering if someone could tell how the pocket clips are on Cold Steel knives? I’ve heard that the clips on CS, are pocket killers and it’s tough to get the knife out of your pocket.

    Put them to the test... Cutting cardboard does not tell anything about security, reliability, function and durability... Just based on the looks of both, the blade stop pin on the sog is a toothpick compared to the blade stop on the recon 1, the lock bar lock does not match the triad lock in its worse days... The thicker blade in the sog limits the blade cutting/slicing performance down to crap. Taking into consideration that it's held in place by a needle and a lock bar I don't have many doubts of which is the the better performer between both... Unfortunatelly the sog is just a "damn beeffy macho man" piece of garbage... Btw I'm not a cold steel fanatic fan in any way, the srk is an equally mediocre knife (a tool made to cut through stuff), just because the blade stock is too beefy... For those that are nodding their head with the obvious "the purpose of this knife is to be used as an axe because it is a survival knife" My answer is that's absolute BS. A survival knife must be a good cutting tool that allows you to do delicate cutting tasks to build tools that you can use!!! If you can't live without something that cuts logs, get an axe, or beter, a foldable saw (it costs
