Though AD10 is a well made knife I stay with the Recon1 for solid reasons. I'm 43 years old, I want to stay in shape so I run between 10 to 15 km through forest areas. I put two Recons, one in each pocket of my running shorts and I don't feel they are there, but if the situation demands it I have two knives ready for action, plus you barely notice they are in my pockets. I live in France, a Recon1 is €125 and AD10 is €180 which is a big difference. AD 10 has a smaller wider blade not so good for penetration, while Recon1 spear point which I carry it's excellent. If the handle of the Recon1 would have the same pommel the AD10 has it would be perfect as it will lock your hand even better, but that's what I think. I will eventually pick an AD10 because it is a beautiful, strong, well made knife, and 10 is my birthday, but my first love is Recon. Best regards, stay sharp!
Love both, can’t choose. But I wish in a near future a AD10 frame with the recon blade in a affordable price. I think this knife exist but at a super premium $$$ as a Denko custom design. Also love the SR1/sr1 lite, the pro lite series and the 4 max / 4 max scout.
when you sitting at a desk and you want to cut something do you forget that you have like 20 knives sitting there?and start looking for something to cut with ? I catch myself doing that !
concerns .. when the ad 10 is closed is there any metal from the blade pivot sticking out [ the round part that the blade lock slides on ] at 618 of the video it looks to be out of the g10 .. if the knife is dropped on the round steel part that sticks out this would ruin the action and not be able to be fixed ,,please confirm . ty
Dan - its not really exposed. When folded closed it is the same height as the G10 and liners. You can definitely see where the stop pin rests, but there would really be no way that area would be damaged from a drop. At least not any more than any other knife.
Great comparison! R1 is one of my all time favs (I own 4 of them)! I have an AD10 inbound and am curious to see how it works for me. Doubt it will supplant the R1 but who knows?

UH is awesome, I myself will probably never get an ad10 to carry,(maybe for collection) when knife handle gets that's bulky, I'm strapping on a fixed blade like my BM bushcrafter.
oh yeah I mod the pocket clip 1\8" from the scale and bend the tip up a little ! on the recon 1 !and smooth the scale just below the clip ( not noticeable )! I admit my addiction to people all the time but it doesn't seem to help !
I love my recon 1’s have 2 of the S35VN DLC coated spear points. they fly open with a flick of the wrist with such authority :) thinking of getting the AD10 or AD15 when in stock great vids as always thanks
The AD10 is now available with a Saber grind, and being a drop point making the blade much stronger now than the Recon 1 with its clip point and flat grind. Myself, I prefer the AD10 over the Recon 1 for this reason, since my activities are focused on woodcraft and survival and not on tactical. Also, for those wondering, the AD10 has a sharp enough 90 degree spine that will scrape and produce sparks from a ferrocerium rod. Honestly, if you need more strength than the Recon 1, you are not using your knife reasonably, you are abusing it beyond any justification. I’ve seen people baton with the Recon 1 with no issues. If bashing the tip with a piece of wood through a log is “too light” for you, you need to reevaluate your choice of tools.
I have found if you depress the lock all the way on the knife, then set a pair of vice grips on the lock overnight, it makes a HUGE difference. Don't forget to wrap the teeth on the vice grips with a few layers of tape to keep it from scarring your knife.
Bend the spring a bit more flat with plyers and you will see a nice improvement. Leaving my code 4 half open for a week did nothing to soften the spring.
Can't eave home without a custom recon1 ! I want an ad10 ! But it will not replace my custom recon 1 ! Love the xhp ! Also d2 ! S30v is high price 440c I have to sharpen s30v as much as 440c or aus 8 or more ! I don't need more stianless I need edge holding ! The point wins !
@Dale Carpenter - I have seen you make this same comment in various videos and I personally don't understand the comment. First of all, the blade on either one of these is not S30V, they're both S35VN...although similar it is not the same. Also, CTS XHP and S35VN have nearly identical stats when it comes to toughness and edge holding. D2, although a favorite for some, does not seem to hold an edge as long as either of those steels.
It's apples to oranges Kevin if your going down a dangerous place you want the recon1 if your just going around your house or job site and need a tuff knife go with the ad10 abuse these knives these knives are way to clean and pretty imo

If you want something pretty to look at and play with get the ad10. If you go into the Wilderness and need to save weight then get the Recon 1. I bought the Recon 1 specifically for this purpose because every single ounce counts I don't need fancy looks I need to save weight and save my back

I can't decide which is "better" , I love them all like children , but I will say I think the Recon 1 is a little better for tactical and self defense use because of the longer reach and pointier tip and the AD10 is a better woods and hard core edc knife. But if you could only get one , and money is a factor , remember you can buy the regular DLC coated Recon 1 for around $80.00 if you look hard , and thats a Great deal. But in reality , just buy both and the AD15 too , ha,ha , you won't regret it.. 🗡 🖖.
I own both and all the Recon series including a 5.5" Recon Tanto blade. They are all outstanding, however, I'll EDC my Recons. The SR1s are excellent as well. Wrapping up a decision, performance, durability, ergonomics, and price, the Recon1 series Is what I will carry.
Cold Steel Recon 1 (have 3 of them ) for regular hands, Cold Steel Bush Ranger folder (love it) for bigger hands, and the Cold Steel AD-10 (finally fits!) for the largest hands. #ColdSteelRocks
I guess the only real way of finding out which is best is to give a platoon of serving soldiers one of each and after their tour of duty simply ask them. I prefer the American Lawman over either of these but I'm an old fat person and definately not a soldier so WTF do I know, right? Lol ... :) :)

not as good as my custom recon 1 but just as good ! when people think of recon 1s I can see why they might choose the AD10 over the recon 1 ! but I lighten the lock spring ( most people can't operate ) ! polish the parts ! reshape the handle ! and modify the blade ( when closed to open quality beverages ( be very careful not to cut into where the blade contacts the stop pin )) ! I have done many and given them to my kids ( 12 blended loving family 7 good women 5 good men ) !
Knife people are being pulled into this more than you should be doing with a folder thing ! The idea of the hard use folder is that its all you have not that you have a choice ! Like you're out there and there is no choice but to hard use a knife ! And the folder is what you have ! I think it comes for this stupid dislike of cold steel that many have for now real reason ! It's funny cause cold steel is an American knife company they cry about being loyal to !

Dude, you don’t need 4 R1s. I have a R1 I bought used for EDC and work. Maybe a I can go for another as a spare. But I have other CS knifes for that.

buy the AD 15 :-P great review though, recon is definitely lighter in pocket, but harder to get out of pocket than the AD 10.

Not a hard choice at all, have had the recon 1 for some time, just picked up the AD 15. The AD 10 is next, get em all!

My Recon 1's lock is atrocious. It is literally painful to actuate more than 3 times. Definitely not as smooth as my Code 4 or Finn Wolf

The AD10 liners are not stainless steel, they are aluminum.
