  • First off i would like to apologize for the lack of detailed work and progress in this episode. I was waiting for a load of important fixings arriving so that i would be able to keep building but they never arrived on time so episode 3 will be split into 2 parts and i will finish building the frame and start the engine tear down in the next episode. ( still haven't arrived so ill be moving onto episode 4 the engine build )

    A bit of background first.
    Another year another big restoration project.

    Anyway onto the bike. As you may remember i restored the tank from this bike in a previous video for the previous owner of the bike. his intention was to have me restore the tank and that would give him the inspiration to get on with the rest of the bike but sadly this was not the case. So i made him an offer on it and now its mine to restore back to its former glory.
    It was initially found lying in a barn parted out and whats left is all that you see in the video so theres a lot of bits ill need to source, easier said than done! No one even knows if it runs as whoever parted it out has been long forgotten in the sands of time, then my friend stepped in saved it from the barn and now its in my possession.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    The plan this week was to have a complete rolling chassis but the lack of available parts for these bikes really is becoming a pain! But anyway i did manage to get a few jobs done.
    First up i re-fitted the swing arm, All of the fixing and bushes were fitted in a previous episode. one fitted it was torqued to spec. Then i moved to the front of the frame where i installed new bearing races into the stem, as mentioned in the video using a hammer and socket isn't really the correct way to fit these races you get a special tool for the job but if you dont have the tool this method works just fine, just be careful not to damage the paint work while striking the socket.
    After the races were fitted, i greased up the rollers and got them ready for installation. Once the bearings and yoke were in the stem i screwed on the bearing cap which was then torqued down to the required lbs-ft. I then sat the top yoke on and put on the stem nut loosely , it has to be left loose at the moment so that the yoke can move to fit the front shocks.
    Next up i tackled the job is putting the brakes back together and refitting them back into the wheels. Its an easy enough job, fit the two return springs onto the shoes pull them part so that they go over the pivot and voila your done! I then fitted the rear sprocket onto the rear wheel yet again its another simple job thats completed in no time. you may notice that there are no locking tabs on the sprocket and thats because it is an off road bike and no tabs are needed. Just in case you thought id forgotten to fit them.
    Then i free'd up some space on the bike lift and placed the frame on it so that i could fit the front and rear shocks, the shocks were attached to the front wheel temporarily so that i could keep the shocks in line while fitting them through the yoke. They were a tight fit but after a few whacks with a rubber mallet i go them sitting where they should and torqued up the pinch bolts. At this point i torqued the stem nut as well. I then moved around the back to fir the rear shocks, I am awaiting the top mount bolts so temporary m8's were used to hold them in place while i fitted the bottom dome nuts.
    At this point i found out the rear axle bolt was the wrong one and that ended the video. But the next episode will be jammed packed technical stuff.
    Stay tuned for part 2 coming soon ;)
    A new addition to my videos from now on will be a water mark and my channel name popping up in random places throught the video as im getting rather tired of people re-uploading my content as their own i hope you guys understand.
    If you like what you see and have any ideas for the channel or would even like to donate something to restore to the channel please get in touch. :)
    And as usual if you liked the video please like share and subscribe and help the channel grow.

    It's great to see one of these being restored, I have owned 2 in the past and they were bullet proof little bikes. Out of all the many bikes I have owned I think these were the most fun to ride, came home many times covered in mud and soaking wet but with a massive grin on my face.

    I bough one of these new in the mid 70’s. The 125’s had blue graphics on the tank, and the later TL250’s had red. They were great little motorcycles, we used to easily ride them over 50 gallon drums turned on their side, and also used them as trail bikes in the hills. Very well balanced and they looked good. I rode in a few trials events, and while these were not really serious trials machines, like the Bultaco’s and some of the European bikes, where trials was, and is a more widely appreciated sport, they were a great entry into the world of creeping around over rocks and through creek beds and over fallen trees....I think I paid 700 bucks for this new. This is very interesting and it’s great to see it come to life. Makes me remember now why I was so smitten by this motorcycle, and coerced a few of my friends to buy them too....great fun.

    I used to have a TL125, back in 1977. I was working as a Honda bike mechannic at the time. I'm sure I remember there being a pair of locking tabs on the rear sprocket nuts. Plus, there was always a fibre "washer" or padding, inside the cavity on the brake plate, before the arm went on. I never knew what it was for, they were always full of crud.

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Locking tabs on road going versions i totally agree with you, purely off road versions like this one i haven't seen with locking tabs. You have a keen eye sir ;) The fibre washers have now been fitted to the brake plates i didn't fit them in this video as the arms arent fitted in there final positions yet. A good idea ... I used two washers with a 3/4 threaded rod and two nuts, one part can even be welded to the nut and the other is released for tightening, and like the press system, I change several direction boxes in this mode and it always worked, if the washer is bigger, it can be reduced a bit.

    In this segment of the restoration mechanics of motorcycles, they are actually equivalent or almost to their new state, however, as there are several recovered by each TH-camr mechanic, I am left with the curiosity, to know if they will be for his own use, or for exhibition and sale and, or maybe there will be cases in which the owner is the one who brings them with this objective. 🏍️

Would you mind sharing what brand(s) you own or preferred to use when working on motorcycles? Could you provide which model you purchased (?) digital, electronic or click type of tool)? I am a hobbyist, not a mechanic yet I love being creative using a variety of tools in order to get the job done correctly without the big dollar shops quote then overcharge! Holy cow. That is soooo annoying with the spindle. Been there (with a Plymouth Road Runner) and I feel for you.

    Where did you order shocks from? Do you recall what size they are? I’m restoring a 1974 XL250 and I think they take 13.5 inch. Also may I ask the tires? What brand and sizes? For front and back? Truly love your channel....just subscribed.

    Ah too bad bud, always bites the big one when there's a model mix up, i installed new front hubs on my F350 and when i went to put the wheels back on they had different threads, place that sold me the hubs wouldn't cut me a deal on the new nuts. shit happens.

    I couldn’t help but notice on video it looked like there wasn’t a upper bearing installed on the upper steering neck or did you put it in, I saw the race but then you put on the dust seal and no bearing just asking

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha yeah i noticed that in the edit as well and i knew someone would pick me up on it ;) The bearing is there its just hidden by the seal and my hand. Thanks for leaving a comment :)
