    From my experience with p38s albeit not diesel they don't take well to low voltage and jump starting modules can loose sync you can have immobiliser issues get a good battery and keep chargered up you will avoid loads of headaches. If it still doesn't start spray something flammable on the intake and see if it will get it going at least you will rule out fuel issues.

    You need to undo number one injector pipe to prove there is fuel going into the engine

  • @markmarot9026
    @markmarot9026 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Definetely there is a very good chache that a new fuel filter solves the problem. I had an e34 with the same engine, died on me twice because of the filter.

  • @dion5643

    Good video Sam. Go right back to basics, change the fuel filter, then check to see what flow you have from the tank to the filter ?
    There is no access panel for the fuel in the tank, but you can cut yourself one under the rear seat, I used to think this sort of thing was butchery, but it’s sooo much easier than dropping the tank……

    Land Rover .. turning owners into mechanics since 1950-whenever .. good to see Range Rover staying loyal to the brand
    as to what's wrong with it .. NFI ( same as anybody else who has only watched a video of a car not starting ) But you'll work it out Sam

    As a long term P38 owner (4.6 V8) the problem could well be the fact that the battery has drained down too far, causing the ECU to lose sync with the BECM, hence the turning over yet not firing issue..
    I have suffered that myself with mine in the past, although re syncing them back is quite easy (at least on the Gems variant)..

    • @Thanos.m
      @Thanos.m ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Have had a gems 4.6 in the family for 17 years and I second although not sure how the diesel works. But in general low voltage on P38s can cause nightmares from my experience

    • @j.d.sunderland8113
      @j.d.sunderland8113 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      P38 Rangies do not like it when you have to use a jump pack, as the BECM just loses track of what’s going on, then you get a whole new world of pain with electrical “Gremlins” to deal with.
      Easy to say with hindsight, but I have learnt this the hard way with mine, far better to leave the P38 connected to a trickle charger, if it’s going to be parked up for a few days….

    • @peterwarner8541
      @peterwarner8541 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Completely agree with this. I have had a drain on my v8 battery that I’m trying to trace. When the voltage is low and I start the car you’d think I need to scrap the car the number of warnings I get. Charge the battery up and all is forgotten!

    • @j.d.sunderland8113
      @j.d.sunderland8113 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@peterwarner8541 Battery drain on the P38’s seem to be caused if it still retains air suspension, because it was designed to keep level, a slight drop in one airbag causes the car to burst into life, and release pressure in the other airbags to maintain the level stance……
      Convert it to coil springs, the BECM gets confused at what’s going on, and hence drains so much quicker….
      (That’s why I put my P38 back on air suspension)….

    • @j.d.sunderland8113
      @j.d.sunderland8113 ปีที่แล้ว

      To resync a GEMS p38 Rangie, you don’t actually need a Nanocom, Rovercom, or indeed any computer, the only tools required are the ignition key, flat blade screwdriver and 13 mm spanner…….
      ;-)

    Thanks for another great video 👍🏻 few basics to try,
    Injector leak off pipes?
    Vac pipe under inlet manifold?
    Cranking was a bit sluggish?
    Fuel filter, crack banjo to see if flowing/bleed, crack injector 1 to check flowing.?
    Glow plugs getting power? If no check fuse,relay,temp sensor?

    Did my glow plugs on my p38 back in may. Worst two days of my life 😂 somebody had used a impact gun to fit the harness to the glow plugs. Nearly ripped the harness lol just replaced the whole rear exhaust including that middle section you wanted to fit also. It’s not a bad job just takes a lot of time. Need to fit a new belt to the aircon to the camshaft pulley (replaced that also) then it’s ready for its MOT.

  • @tommysutton9361
    @tommysutton9361 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is definitely not turning over fast enough Sam.
    The heater plugs actually working now it draining the bit of power you have.
    Crack off the inlet fuel pipe from the injector pump and make sure you have good flow from the in tank pump.
    The in tank pump will cut out after a certain amount of time also. So find teh relay in the fuse box under the bonnet, cross the wires so that the in tank pump stays on while starting it for the first time.
    You may also have an air leak at those crusty old leak off pipes, so change them to make sure you are not getting any air in the system after it does actually start

    Hi Sam i looked forward to this next P38 video which seemed a long time coming anyway i am sorry you seem to be having problems with your beasty☹i know very little about the 2.5 P38 which is what i also own but am learning fast. As whats been said it does sound like a fuelling/air issue when i bought my 2.5 it had a none return valve already fitted to the fip from the fuel filter and a brand new battery. So the clues are there i have only had my P38 2.5 auto two weeks my previous were all V8s so derv is new to me and is already testing me! With its "engine disabled" when it wants and marking his territory on the drive from the diff and dipstick and steering pipes and now leaky heater matrix O rings etc. But i still think he is such a good looking beast it makes the grief all worth while and driving it when its working properly is superb or will be when i fit some original spec 18s instead of the terrible 20s fitted when i bought it. Anyway keep em coming i bet your next vid will be i have sussed the problem and he's running great 👍
