The Bored Ape BLIND Club - The ApeFest Disaster

- Bored Ape Yacht Club (for years now) has been a staple of the NFT Market... but with declining dominance, a faltering industry, numerous lawsuits, and now (most likely) UV lights nearly blinding their "ape fest" attendees... the company behind the Apes, Yuga Labs, is once again in hot water.
Spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, to buy a picture of a monkey, fly across the world, and almost go blind. It doesn't get more "Crypto" than that.

That UV light thing sounds like some legal regulation is falling behind.
The ape think I could care less than nothing about. That is all for the stupid, and they deserve to keep it.
How come your rumble account is missing this video (and others)? Would really like to pivot away from youtube.
... the "bored apes" are people. RH+ bt peeps are seen as apes to the elite. Example: Battlefield Earth.
NFTs were created for the primary purpose of money laundering. The "legitimatizing" of NFTs, is to HIDE the money laundering.
Are there some morons that would waste a million dollars on an NFT of a stupid monkey? SURE! There are always people that stupid, and criminals will take advantage of that. But most people spending large amounts of money on NFTs, are doing so for the purpose of paying for illegal things out in the open!
NFTs are for money laundering.
There is a deep and profound irony that all these people blinded by greed and stupidity were almost literally blinded by the very same source.
They are the very definition of NGMI
It's.. poetic, almost. But... Hilarious? MOST DEFINITELY!
Well, the dude was writing a letter for people to read that can't see anymore.

They make convention over everything including Vaginette meme. It fails spectacularly.

lol for real how random
The irony of someone who buys pictures going blind at a party about said pictures. Got me rolling.
That shit’s biblical lmao
You can't make this stuff up
what about the investment company suing bored apes lol. Someone should sue the investment company for not being able to do 2+2
That's some Flanagan style irony lol
If a movie makes a joke about that anyone would think that's ridiculous but look at this going on 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈
This is unfortunately a too common issue where clubs purchase the wrong kind of UV tubes for blacklight effects.
Wait are the sterilization lights cheaper for party lights. When I was part of a business installing them for mass sterilization of aquarium water sumps and they seemed pricy.
@@notubist I mean, these are people who like to flaunt how rich they are. if Sterilized lights are indeed more expensive than the normal party lights, they just might get that instead and unironically think its better
sounds like _shady amateur_ club problem to make such mistakes.
The weird thing is these germicidal lights are waaaay more expensive than the correct UV-A lights they were supposed to get.
@@notubisttheyre very expensive. They need really special glass because normal glass blocks the UV.
If they think those NFTs look good, weren't they already blind?
Ouch. Buuuuuurn!
Pun^2
They thought it looked like a good investment...
Might be they brought it in the hope of it made them look good. (hip/cool). Anyway I don't pity, them as the value of NFT keeps dropping. Who the fuck thought NFT was a good idea besides the seller.
@@lovejoydk838 the people who collect gas fees on the sales. NFT's were a boon for the ailing crypto exchange infrastructure, which was suffering because pretty much no businesses with legitimate products accept crypto as payment.
I don't think a single person that bought NFTs thought they looked good, but put yourself in their shoes (incredibly hard, I know, but imagine your IQ takes a dive):
You just spent what some people don't make in a lifetime in an awful picture of a cartoon monkey in hopes it's imaginary value will go up, or better explained, some sucker even dumber than you will pay higher for it. It is in your best interest to say board apes are "cool" and "good looking" even if they are the most uninspired, repulsive, generic depiction of a monkey an AI would come up with after typing "monkey graffiti".
Though of course the joke was and will continue to be on the people holding those NFTs thinking they will ever go back up in value. And I know people say "but don't you feel bad for the people that lost all their money to NFTs?" no, me and many people do not. Money finds a way out of dumb people's wallets and this just so happened to be their moment, but clearly they are so dumb it would've happened in the future either way. This doesn't mean it's right for that money to go into the wallets of conmen, but it's also not wrong for it to leave the wallets of dumb people, and the cash flow from dumb people to conmen is as old as time, since the early days when Grug the caveman trusted Burg the (other) caveman would spare him some fire at night if he gave him some meat during the day, before Burg left Grug's ass to freeze and starve.
Takes being "blinded by greed," to a whole new level.
😂
Looks like a sausage fest where participants were unknowingly rolling under a heat lamp like a three day old convenience store hot dog.
It was a *little* sausage fes
Way worse because with heat lamps (Infrared) you at least feel when it's time to take a break from it while with UV you only notice when it's too late
@@Dommifaxreptile heat lamps emit UV-B
My dad (Ophthalmologist) used to always warn me about going to blacklight discos - which I never did anyway because I was way to socially awkward for partying before uni - but I never heard of someone actually being hurt by it until now
Well you havent now either, since they werent technically using what is colloquially known as "blacklights". So you/they would be safe in going, if the organisers had any small shred of knowledge of what lights they truly had installed.
That was not blacklight. Some idiots used germicidal UV-C tubes instead of UV-A blacklights.
It’s straight-up biblical punishment for their hubris, I love it.
I need to brush up on my biblical punishments.
hah. hubris. I think you hit the head on the nail there. hubris do seem to be the term that could explain why anyone would end up buying NFT.

UV lights? UV lights. Shout out to Big Clive for making me aware of the risks of nasty cheap UV lights.
i saw that one too, sunburns and eye damage from a party at night, those stupid death bulbs are about the only thing that will do that
Just get regular led lights, like the Hexagons I got they be distracting and nice to look at but they haven't blinded my eyes.
@@mightyraptor01 It's actually not cheap UV light, they just bought medical cleaning UV lights, as in light you used for medical or sterilization purpuse, and often are MORE expensive
@@Max128ping oh danm those ones actually mean I thought I remember seeing those lights going up and down electric stairs at one of the Airports if Im not mistaken.
Unfortunately, someone is making cheap versions of these now. There is a popular scam going around where people pretend to clean your vents and they install this “light” as an air filter for a ton of money. The whole “air filter unit” with the light costs less than $100 on Amazon. They are charging $3,000
I work at a hospital for housekeeping and we have giant uv light towers to sterilize rooms from covid, cdiff, etc. And I always have a fear of accidently getting blinded by the lights, this would've been my nightmare.
Oops ...sorry I just accidentally unplugged your oxygen

NFTs, the curse that keeps on giving...
This has happened several times. I remember a storage room in China using germicidal lamps instead of fluorescence lamps as lighting, because they had them handy. It caused similar symptoms. Bigclive actually did some videos on these lamps. They're pretty nasty.
They are very useful if you actually utilize them for the intended purpose
@@cultistaautista Yeah, but unfortunately China is still behind when it comes to strict, explicit labelling. I have handled some scary lamps and laser products packed in generic paforated boxes with the bare minimum labels. It's not a cleaner or even a manager's fault for seeing a bulb that "fits" and thinking it works.
Some policy change is needed, this has happened thousands of times.
With the fact that the majority of NTFs are worthless now in mind, I would loooovvvee to know how the Earth 2 community is handling this...

@@TheInquisitiveShark Same, it's been months since I last heard about Earth 2. Last I saw they unveiled some type of city building or something?
I expected a video about how Bored Ape owners are blind to financial knowledge, risks, and downward trend of the NFT market.
What I didn't expect is a video about them literally going blind.
Same. I thought it was gonna be about them coping for the terrible investment they made by being blind to reality or something like that.
Good news is those crispy corneas should heal up alright, so long as they don't make "bask in the glow of germicidal lighting" a part of the club identity...
I was expecting mass methanol poisoning, but UV light-related eye injury was not on my bingo
I'll never forget when NFTs first came out.
My children (18, 20, 21) at the time, told me how they were going to change the world financially and that they were worth tens of thousands.

Its almost like Yuga Labs are misanthropic to the core and are intentionally harming those they deem idiots.
It certainly sounds like that to me.
I guess this was one of their nazi science tests and their "followers" are their living human test subjects?
I’ve had flash burns to my eyes before from welding. It is painful as hell. They are lucky if they don’t have permanent damage.
Wait, they got blind as in LITERALLY BLIND? Even if its ironic, the event organisers should be held accountable.
Not quite, but serious eye injury. And yes. We can think these people are idiots but even idiots don't deserve to be put in harm's way like this. Going to a party is not a crime in itself.
It's in China lol. Zero accountability
Yeah, at least some did temporarily and who knows the permanent damage. They basically did the equivalent of a tanning bed without blackout eyewear 🕶️
nah it was a Staged Event
NFT Bros telling each other "get your eyes checked" is poetry
Honestly, kinda terrifying that going to a party could mess up your eyes forever just because someone didn't understand the difference between two types of fluorescent lights. In my opinion, it's the kind of thing that should be hit extremely hard with severe fines and reimbursement of medical costs and damages, just so other companies will take note and be sure to double check their lights and whatnot to avoid future similar incidents.
It's one thing to blindly invest in something but a whole other thing to go blind because of it.
i vaguely remember a fashion event where they used UVC bulbs in place of backlights, you cam imagine how that went
Those lights are for UV sterilization in hospital and was common during the pandemic. At least they sterilize the place but using it no one should be in the area of the UV light.
Honestly.. i find it rather impressive that people were able to convince rich people to buy JPEGS of an ape for millions of dollars 😂😂😂
Eh, it's not really. Rich people have been buying hideous art because it's "rare" and expensive for centuries. Art (or "art" in most cases) has always been an investment first.
@@ASpooneyBard No, they do that for dodging taxes. Buy an expensive piece of art "donate" it to a museum. Have it as a store of value, sell at a later time for only a sales tax. The donation is also a tax write off
@@Ryan-wx1bi And that is what actual gives art it's value. Not only do it work as value hidden from tax collectors but it can also be used as unregistered payments/donation/bribe.
@@Ryan-wx1bi You are actually both correct.

"And subsequently need medical attention because they went to an overpriced monkey-picture event that almost blinded them."
What a time to be alive.
Haha, right when I heard eye pain I knew someone used the wrong UV lights.
That's cost cutting on your lighting contractor... They should know.
Why do NFTs refuse to die?
It's the modern legal scam, and scammers won't let their scam die until they are outlawed. MLMs still exist, pyramid schemes are illegal and the scammers still try itm
Imagine holding on to the belief your NFT is worth something!
My brother bought one for a dollar or so ($30 with fees!) and I laughed just because he even did the transaction...
Money laundering.
NFTs still have their use as a tax dodge. When that loophole is closed, expect the value to drop. It might hold up to a degree, there will always be people who bought high and HODL waiting for better days if they don;t need the cash right away. And there will always be people who see a Bored Ape that was $60k trading at $1k and think they are getting a bargain. Combined with low volume, that will keep the price well away from the zero line.
Because they are resistant to even germicidal lightbulbs, apparently
Not the first time I've heard a story along these lines. I remember watching a BigClive video where he was talking about a similar event in a club in China before. Using the wrong UV lights is a big no no
It is china, it is like handing monkeys a gun. They have no idea what they have in their hands.
Imagine an animal that can see ultraviolet light, such as a reindeer or mantis shrimp, being at that party and being completely blinded by a series of the brightest floodlights you’ve ever seen. And these silly humans were just dancing around totally oblivious to the dangers.
Just began working at an optics laboratory with high powered lasers, including UV light sources. Omg, the amount of safety around UV lasers/lights can be no joke. This is just insane to me.
Idk how ntf’s are still a thing. Also, I wonder how Earth 2 is going lol
It's such a low effort scam you only need a handful of idiots to make it profitable (at the top, not any of the middle men, they'll always lose money), and there will always be idiots...
damn, I'd completely forgot about good ol' shane.
nfts are an interesting technology, just the high transaction costs of major blockchains make sure they can"t be used for anything worthwhile.
"layer 2" garbare like lightning and danksharding won"t fix that, as they don"t scale the actual blockchain, ethereum"s shard chains would have been a solution, but that was abandoned for the time being.
Reminds me of an organiser who decided to point a pulsed ND/YAG ourdoor showlaser into the crowd to maximise the effect. 12 people where ff-ed.
I've written a paper in my college days about NFts and their application in the digital market back in 2011. Essentially it goes back to the inital concerns by many artists when digital art started to gain some traction: if we digitized an art piece and then copied the art in its entirety, which one is the genuine article. The idea for NFTs was to ensure that the original, digitized art work was supposed to authenticate that Jpeg as the original.
However the concept of an NFT is lovely, ultimately digital art that is easy to copy and paste cannot be monitized for much at all. Once it is out there, every copy is thus a genuine copy. Ecomonics 101, the more supply is out there, the less it is valued at.
We appreciate you've articulated your own insights. They're always in-depth.
The idea of people who think they know everything almost being permanently blinded because they didn’t bother to look up anything about lighting sounds about right.
8:30 "how did humanity become this much of a joke?"
When common sense vanished from society, ignorance began being heralded as the new knowledge, and those with good conscience stood by and did nothing (and are still doing nothing).
That was the only honest introduction to a exposé on NFTs I've ever seen. Thanks for that.
It's funny, as soon as I saw the "event" and heard the blindness had come after I knew it was going to be linked to UV exposure.
Many, many years ago I discovered the hard way that a pair of dark glasses I thought blocked UV actually didn't after a very sunny day skiing. Fairly quickly figured out what caused it and got myself a decent pair
When someone promises you wealth, it usually means youre helping them achieve it 😂
I find this story genuinely terrifying.
People can laugh at it in this case because of who got injured (even though it's very possible non-NFT bros were in attendance, including innocent employees who were just there for work - *EDIT: Confirmed* - Non-NFT-Bro TH-camr Atozy attended the event to report on it & the lights hurt him too)...but the fact that it's possible for this to happen to anyone without them noticing until it's too late..that's scary!!
It would be one thing if they noticed the damage immediately after the event, but all the stories I've seen start with the person making it home fine & falling asleep first, only to wake up to the horror (whether or not they woke up because of the pain).
That's freaking scary. To think I could attend an event with lighting indistinguishable from all the other events I've attended with similar lighting...have a good time...leave the event and make it home fine, falling asleep completely unaware of what had just happened to me...only to wake up to experience an injury in arguably the worst place ever: the eyes!! Both searing pain AND blindness in both eyes??!
I live alone on the second floor of a large apartment building (just with a small dog who needs me & gets underfoot often)...so the thought of waking up one day to find myself unable to see while in excruciating pain is especially terrifying. How would I even go about calling 911? I only have a smartphone that's entirely touch screen. I rely on my vision to use it for anything. _(Forget calling 911 - I'd be lucky to get my password pattern right, and I wouldn't even know when I succeeded because I don't like my phone reacting physically or audibly to anything I do.)_ I don't have a landline or any voice activated Alexa-type thing I could use to call 911 for me.
I think I would have no choice but to make my way to neighboring apartments and knock on doors until I found someone who is home & could call 911 for me. Hopefully at least 1 of my 16 neighbors are home! (I guess the one good thing about living in an apartment building in this case is that it would be way easier to reach my neighbors for help...compared to homes where the closest neighbor requires a trek outside, likely involving steps.)
this comment is very correct. ever since i heard of this case i can't even look at a light without thinking "is that ultraviolet?? will I go blind!?!?!???!!?"
crypto bros losing eyesight ? thats a win right ?

FYI, the organizers thought that using UV lights instead of common party lights, would kill the airborne viruses, esp the covid virus .. Well, it worked, everyone were virus free, but, got blinded instead ~ 😂😂😂
I used to use these kind of lights when I cleaned a hospital, the machine is covered in warnings telling you EXACTLY what they'll do to you if you stare at them. There's no reason for those lights to have even been there.
Blinding their holders for being blind to their cultish ways
I laughed, then felt bad... Then I pulled myself together and continued laughing 😂
yeah i kinda expected it would be sterilization lights once the context of the event was brought up, really pretty lights but stupid dangerous and often not advertised for what they are when sold online
Mercury vapor has a rather distinct visible color discharge that is decently hard to achieve with other gas combinations. So more than likely they wanted a pretty pale blue. If you don't know any better these tubes look very attractive.
I think there's been a few other cases of this happening in China and I believe it happened in a nightclub in Russia too. (I'm going off memory sorry) This is why laser effect lighting requires a license in the US and a lot of the EU. A lot of that stuff is powerful enough to cause eye damage so you need to set it up properly.
These sorts of club style venues in very unregulated markets have a history of causing all sorts of problems for their guests. This probably won't be the last time this happens either. As stupid as this is going to sound, this is why you need people that know what they're doing with this sort of stuff.
That party was a total sausage fest.

This is just an aside: why do almost all NFT critics describe them as JPEGs? That's only one type of image file and NFTs can be a URL to any type of file. If they're animated they're obviously not JPEGs and can even be movie files to have more quality than a GIF. And of course PNG retains quality like a JPEG doesn't. Just calling them "image files," or if you really want to be pedantic and include the movie files, "graphics files," would be more accurate and allow for the more interesting use cases some NFTs (might) actually pose.
