    ...Let’s start off with the tube that most of us are familiar with. Clear E6000 in a 3.7 ounce tube. You can find this stuff in any hardware store and you can now find it in craft stores too because it’s a go-to for glueing things to fabric and leather. The reason people like this stuff is because it’s strong and permanent, like an epoxy, but has the flexibility of a silicone caulking. If I want to get something down quick, I go for my hot glue gun or some super glue. But if I want to make a lasting, permanent bond, I reach for this because it doesn’t get brittle. But this particular tube design has its drawbacks. One is that it tends to dry out before you reach the end of the tube. Two is that the thick glob coming out of here is hard to work with and tends to smear around the threads of the opening, sealing it shut or making it impossible to put the lid back on. So, two things I learned while doing research. One is that you can order a high-viscosity variation of this stuff in the same 3.7 ounce tube. It looks like this but says high-viscosity on the side. I’ll show you what the glue looks like a little later, but it’s essentially a runnier version that can be easier to work with. The second thing I learned is that you can get inexpensive tips for these that screw on. I got a dozen for $6. You can cut the tip for exactly the size of bead you want to put down. When you’re done, a little tape on the tip is enough to seal it off. Alright, so here’s another way to go. These are mini tubes of the same stuff. I got a 4-pack for $7. This solves two problems. It puts out a smaller bead of glue because it has a smaller opening. And you don’t have to worry as much about the glue drying out because there’s less glue at stake and the other tubes are sealed up until you need them. On the other end of the spectrum, you can get E6000 in a 10 oz cartridge format. If you need to glue up a ton of barbie dolls to your Burning Man art car, this a cool way to do it. You can cut the tip to get the bead size you want, and you get the added control of the squeeze trigger. At $12, it’s a good value. You can also get this stuff in high or medium viscosity. This one is high and I’ll show you what that looks like. Here’s a line of standard E6000. And here’s a line of high-viscosity. Still pretty goopy, but easier to work with, I think. It’s a similar feel to high-temp hot glue. I also found out about UV E6800. This is a UV resistant variation of E6000 that comes in either a tube or a 10 oz. cartridge. It’s a little pricier, but if you’re using it on a boat or a car or something that’s going to stay outdoors and you don’t want the glue to yellow, it’s good to know this is an option. Now, for crafters, there’s a lot of interesting E6000 variations on the market. One example is this 1 oz. tube of E6000 for Jewelry and Beads. I picked this up for $8 and I didn’t notice anything different about the adhesive itself compared to standard E6000. I did like, though, that it includes 3 metal tips to help place precise drops of the stuff. I was able to clear these out with compressed air and a small drill bit and reuse them over and over. Next up, a real departure for E6000. It’s called Fabri-Fuse, it’s $9, and it’s specifically made for attaching things to fabric. It comes in different colors, including some glitter options. It’s definitely a different formulation from typical E6000. As an experiment, I tried using it for gluing up a 3D printing project and it didn’t work at all. But to be fair, it doesn’t list plastic as a compatible material. It worked great for gluing on a patch to my jacket, but if you’re hoping to use this for wearable electronics or LEDs, I’d stick with the standard E6000. I also couldn’t resist checking out a E6000 spray. Again, don’t let the brand name name fool you. This is a different formulation that’s probably best suited for collages and crafts. It doesn’t put out a fine mist like a 3M Super 77, but it’s also not as stinky. Could be a great fit for some project, but not a great fit for what I’m doing at the moment. Finally, just to bring us back to the original E6000 that I know and love, here’s one last variation on the original that I didn’t know about. E6000 black!

    You can put Vaseline (petroleum jelly) on the threads of the tube and cap to avoid sticking (not too much). Do it before you start to use the tube (good for all glues, including instant glues). There is a low odor variant and a white one too (but they might not have existed in 2018 when the video was made. You can clean the jewelry tips even better with a little additional acetone (if it doesn't damage the plastic).

    Regarding 1:54, High viscosity means a thicker and less runny fluid rather than more runny as what was said.

  • @SuperPeader
    @SuperPeader 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Viscosity is the measure of resistance of a fluid to flow. A fluid that is highly viscous has a high resistance (like having more friction) and flows slower than a low-viscosity fluid. To think of viscosity in everyday terms, the easier a fluid moves, the lower the viscosity.

      So when it comes to glue , does higher or lower viscosity affect the strengths of the glues?.

  • @YknotLearnall
    @YknotLearnall 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Vaseline/petroleum jelly on the threads of glue bottles and tubes prevents the cap from sticking or gluing the cap on. Of course, it should go without saying, you need to wipe the threads off of excess glue before you put the petroleum jelly on the threads.

    E6000 works better than any tent seam sealer i have ever used...
    It needs to be thinned down with Klean Strip Xylene (Home Depot) to a maple syrup consistency.
    I bought one of those empty quart cans and made a half batch stays liquefied in a container.
    Buy a pack of those cheap thin metal handle touch up brushes and go at it.
    Make sure you do this in a well ventilated area.
    The stuff will dry fast and last?
    Well put it this way, i have a tent that has been sealed for eight years and still looks like it did the day i applied it.
    I bring one of the tiny tubes in my pack in case i get a leak or i need to patch something, i bring a length of rip stop fabric for rips or holes, apply some E6000 and it holds tight.

    I hate when a company expands its range but uses its familiar brand, i.e. E6000, for entirely unrelated formulas and compositions like the spray and fabric fuse. Note also the parent company now owns the entire Goop and Shoe Goo lines, which are similar but distinct (read, inferior) in strength and elasticity. My toughest test is flat nylon webbing to webbing, where both the penetration and bonding to inert nylon are difficult; so far the E6000 original after days to cure, pulls at much higher test. I worry about the newest version touted as "solvent free," because its elasticity is rated to just 300% versus over 1000% for the original clear, white, and black formulas.

    "Tends to dry out before you use up the tube" is an understatement. I use a lot of different adhesives and thought I'd try E6000. I bought the big tube, used it once, and put it away in an indoor cupboard, not attic or garage. A year later I went to use it again and the upper portion of the properly capped and sealed tube had cured.

    Don't take my word for it, but the "metal tip" looks like a "Luer Lock" connector, which is what 99% of disposable hypodermic syringes use. A large injection needle (think veterinarian supply houses) 16GA or above will probably work well. You can always cut or grind the sharp tip off with a disc sander or Dremel tool.

On this past Saturday I repaired a split inner tube stem.I use a toothpick to put a drop into the split and then spread a good amount of it around the complete stem area above and below it covering the stem base completely wit a good layer.I let it dry 38hrs and then filled it.I left it filled listening for a leak or outright full on blowout from the pressure and it held.I rode my free ride,all mountain Mountain Cycle Sin yesterday and it didn't fail.This was to my absolute shock for three reasons,one I never knew it could be used for rubber,two I didn't prep it properly and three it was just the E6000 no patch added covering.AlsoI didn't clean the inner tube with at least rubbing alcohol all i did was wipe good with a clean cloth and water.It is still holding.I took a gamble on it being able to stretch at least 7 times the original applied amount.All the best.

      I tried to type this before it didn't take so let's see now. I tried a repair on my bike inner tube that most people would not consider let alone try. It'll hold a tire inner tube. On this past Saturday I repaired a split inner tube stem.I use a toothpick to put a drop into the split and then spread a good amount of it around the complete stem area above and below it covering the stem base completely wit a good layer.I let it dry 38hrs and then filled it.I left it filled listening for a leak or outright full on blowout from the pressure and it held.I rode my free ride,all mountain Mountain Cycle Sin yesterday and it didn't fail.This was to my absolute shock and amazement for three reasons,one I never knew it could be used for rubber,two I didn't prep it properly and three it was just the E6000 no patch added or covering.Also I didn't clean the inner tube with at least rubbing alcohol all i did was wipe good with a clean cloth and water.It is still holding.I took a gamble on it being able to stretch at least 7 times the original applied amount.So the other people saying that it's the worst glue they ever tried are using it for the wrong purposes or incorrectly my repaired inner tube is proof of that.All the best.

    To be honest that was not very good, we now know about the viscosity but without an apple to apple strength test we are non the wiser on which one to stick to, with all that money and time you spent, I would have followed that through, still, it's still better than nothing, with respect

      Jim Jackson, I think he’s wrong not the packaging, when he did the bead comparison the the high viscosity option was stiffer; you can see the bead held shape better and didn’t level like the normal stuff. It’s sad though, it’s like the time I interviewed a foundation contractor and he continually referred to concrete as cement, going so far as calling the truck a cement mixer. I wanted to stab my ear drums.

      >"It’s sad though, it’s like the time I interviewed a foundation contractor and he continually referred to concrete as cement, going so far as calling the truck a cement mixer. I wanted to stab my ear drums."
      You were experiencing how language changes. Concrete has cement in it. The trucks were first called cement trucks because they originally were used to mix the cement with sand or gravel, which was brought to the construction site in a separate vehicle or manner. For example, constructing a rock house, the rock may come from one supplier and the cement from another. For most uses, sand is mixed with the cement, and therefore, they are often combined together inside the cement truck as it travels on the road. Upon arrival, there is no delay in getting to the concrete (the trucks have become multipurpose).
      The trucks are still very often called cement trucks, especially by older people that remember when they were all referred to as cement mixers. Thus, very often people refer to concrete as cement, including construction workers that work with the final concrete. It is another example of how the language is changing. It is a battle that you are not likely to win. As another example, it is like trying to get people to understand that a font is a "typeface" at a particular weight, style, and at a particular size, the same as it has been since Gutenberg's time (over 400 years without a change). The wood or lead "font" was stored in cases in two wide trays, all of the same style, etc. The two trays were stored each in separate cases, one above the other, the top case having capital letters, and below it, the regular letters. Those two cases were called uppercase and lowercase. Now, move forward 400 years, Micorosft labeled their original Windows Software Development Kit (SDK) using the word Font over the list of typeface names (mid-80s), so the very first Windows programs lead people to think that "font" was the name. People not being familiar with the word "font" started using it the same way, which was wrong. Some of the first computer dictionaries got it wrong too, but many corrected their entries, and did so with as little editing as possible, leaving some a bit ambiguous. Regardless, the rest of the world's computer users are still using font when they should say typeface. Just about any company or website that supplies typefaces uses the word "font" instead of typeface. Do you think that will change? It has become so ingrained in how people understand what "font" means, that it is not likely to be corrected. It is a battle that the typesetting/newspaper/periodical printing industry will lose out on. You probably do something similar without knowing. If you did interviews, then you probably did writing as well. Have you been using "font" for typeface? And if so, will you change to be correct?
