      I know I'm 2 years late, but many of these require you to also (dry) iron the cloth (ie. apply heat) for it to set. It'd explain the glues that barely held anything at all

  • @mom42boys
    @mom42boys 2 ปีที่แล้ว +150

    Fabric glues aren't meant to hold weight. They are used to hold hems, small tears and small holes closed. I personally use fabric glue on the stitched repairs I make, primarily in jeans. Putting the glue over the stitches helps keep the thread intact and holds the repair better. There is also iron on interface that you can use over the stitches.

      @@mrfrupo Because most of them can't handle the laundry and laundry soap. The item you are repairing will be washed and dried repeatedly and fabric glue is made specifically to bind threads in fabric to handle washing without breaking down.

    Tyler, you're going to have to redo these tests, or simply add another test scenario IMHO.
    instead of pulling at an edge that tests the edge strength, test the entire strength of the bead of glue.
    By taking 2 strips and doing a lap joint (like welding, almost) but with the glue between the 2 surfaces. then pull from each piece of material and see its overall force for the whole bead.

    The real test for fabric glues is not how much force it takes to pull them apart, but rather how they fare with a trip through the washer and dryer. Some fabric glues aren't even machine-washable. Also, as some others have pointed out, you used the glue on the wrong side of the leather.

    I think the problem here is that youve put a single dot of glue on a thin sheet and then tried to pull it apart. Not all fabric glue is made for making a hard solid patch between fabrics. For example... you could have tried superglue and it would have been a much stronger connection but the material would have been hard brittle and ruined.
    Fabric glue like liquid stitch are supposed be used in a line and allow a more flexable less hard, natural movement of the fabric when dried.

    TYLER THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR CONTENT. I WAS EXCITED TO WATCH THIS VIDEO IN PARTICULAR. I'VE WORKED WITH THESE GLUES, AND MANY MORE, FOR 30+ YEARS. LIKE OTHER COMMENTERS HAVE MENTIONED, CONSUMER GRADE GLUES LIKE THIS ARE MEANT FOR USE WHEN FACTORS SUCH AS TENSION, COMPRESSION, SHEAR, BENDING AND TORSION ARE LIGHT TO MEDIUM. WHERE THEY WILL HOLD UP BETTER WITH SOME OF THOSE FORCES AND NOT OTHERS. I ALWAYS TOLD MY CUSTOMERS THAT USING A FABRIC GLUE IS NOT A LONG TERM SOLUTION AS THEY WILL NOT HOLD UP TO WASHING OR HEAVY USE. MOST CONSUMER GRADE AIR DRY GLUES ARE PVA, POLYETHYLENE, POLYURETHANE AND CYNOACRYLATE, EACH OF THOSE HAVE DIFFERENT PERFORMANCE IN DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES. THE THING ABOUT FABRIC GLUE IS THAT IT MUST BE BOTH FLEXIBLE AND STRONG ENOUGH FOR IT'S INTENDED USE. THE ONE TEST THAT SURPRISED ME WAS THE GORILLA GLUE ON LEATHER. I EXPECTED PRETTY CLOSE RESULTS FOR ALL OF THE GLUES YOU TESTED EXCEPT FOR FABRIC FUSION, FABRIC FUSION IS HIGHLY FLEXIBLE AND DOES NOT HOLD UP TO SHEARING WELL AT ALL. IF YOU EVER REVISIT THIS GLUE TEST I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN SEEING ALL 5 FORCE FACTORS TESTED!

    Depending upon which fabric glue you use and the fabric, some fabric glues are actually meant to aid in sewing, like in a hem. Strength in a lot of fabric glue usages isn't important because you're gonna be sewing right over the glue loint anyways. Look at it this way, when 2 pieces of wood at a corner, you wouldn't just glue it and leave it, you'd glue it then screw it.

    I think a better test would be to pull the material not in that direction, but across it's surfaces. Because clothes aren't normally pulled in that direction, testing it's strength by peeling them wouldn't be as accurate as trying to pull them apart across the surface. Also, try this same test with the leather, but instead of using the finished side, use the rough side. Glue works better when it's got a rough surface to grab on to. It's like the difference between gluing a flat surface and gluing a sanded surface. Great vid, I love these types of videos!

    Do this with the fabric folded (peel test) and also with two over lapping fabrics (shear test).

    Moreover, could you also consider doing a wash and dry test? Getting the glued fabric wet and then using heat to dry it?
    I believe these are more practical tests of the glue strength, since people will want to wash and dry and the fabrics they glue together.

    I use liquid stich to fix my jeans all the time. And it works great! And I usually can wear them after about 2 mins of gluing them. I like the liquid stich because it's flexible. It looks and feels like liquid latex.

    It would be interesting to see you test glue that people would use for nails, makeup and skin glue. I feel like those types of glue need to be both strong and flexible and it would be interesting to see how they hold up.

    Did I miss something? The cotton Gorilla Glue's fabric ripped at 19lbs so giving the glue a rating of 19lbs doesn't seem fair when the fabric failed; not the glue 🤷‍♀️

    I worked for a general contractor years ago. He swore by ground water setting concrete. He NEVER added water to a post setting claiming it made no difference. I always wondered if that was true. Does the dry concrete inside the post hole set up just as well (or better) than adding water?

    • @brnzhut
      @brnzhut ปีที่แล้ว

      Concrete need water to cure, soil contains water, but not as much as adding water inside, it takes ages to cure. When outside is cured, inside is still dry

    Your gluing videos are awesome. I have seen some pretty strong results here. However your tests are only for the breaking point. What about a sustained weight to these glues? How long can these glues last under certain sustained weight and time? Would love to see a video demonstration on this. You the man Tyler.

    You could see how the glues perform after washing. The results could change. Also common uses for this type of product are seams and tears as someone pointed out below. Maybe the rough side of leather too as another pointed out. And try to replicate a seam repair like a 4 inch strip for example.

    I've been sewing for about 20 years and fabric glue has never really been part of my regular equipment. I didn't like the discoloration, but that was back in 2000-ish.
    If I used it now, I'd only use it for mending holes with a patch. Fray all, overlap and glue. Then sew mending stitches.

    Saw you on the AJC website and thanks for the info. Yours was a quantitative measurement. Perhaps an improvement would be to be putting the glue on the fabric while it rests on an electronic scale so that the same amount of glue would be applied. Overall a very good vid.

    Some fabric glue is not intended to create a permanent bond. It is used instead to adhere pieces in order to be able to sew those pieces together uniformly.

    Can’t knock the glue testing. I will never forget the super important lesson I learnt from this channel. I used to think there was no need to clamp materials together when you glue them as I thought it didn’t add any strength. I was shocked by the results and will never not clamp again.

    I was watching some of your old videos. The one on where you hooked 500 9v batteries together and shocked hot dogs. Presto makes small appliances. One was called a Hotdogger. It was a tray that you mounted 2to 6 hotdogs in and slid the tray into the lid and plugged it in the wall. The house current electorcuted the hotdogs to cook them. Worked very well. Quick and easy. Not as greasy as frying.

    Fabric glue is designed to do emergency temporary fixes, and for creating a bond to make sewing seams and hems easier. If you are using it for anything else, it's going to fail. It will never survive the washer and dryer.

  • @gary.richardson
    @gary.richardson ปีที่แล้ว

    The glue should be applied to a cleaned sample with a uniform masked area and rolled on with equal weight.
    This should ensure a more consistent surface area and equal thickness.
    Glue put on too thick can fail more than a thin coat and greasy fingers can also compromise adhesion.
    Two tests stand out for fabric application, shear and peel stress and testing both is a good idea.
    Also, some glues may have different cure temperatures and failure temperatures worth comparing.
    After one month, your glues may havedifferent results as well.
    Back when I was an alarm technician, I used a combination of marine grade goop along the edges and zig zag across the middle. I would fill the gaps with super glue gel, apply pressure and fasten, weigh or tape down for 24 hours. This method was the hardest to remove for what I used it on but I can see similar results working on solvent cleaned fabric.

    Interesting. How do each of these glue type samples affect sewing needle (gumming the needle or breaking needle or thread) stitching through the glue if used as temporary seam basting?

  • @gary.richardson
    @gary.richardson ปีที่แล้ว

    Marine glue, used for aquariums will withstand wadhing. Super glue or other fast adhering adhesive dabbed in evenly spaced dots in-between can help hold the fabrics together without making the whole bond surface stiff and give time for the slower curing adhesive to bond without delamination issues. Super glue does not like a low pH. Prepping the super glue areas with a high pH water drops and drying enough to allow penetration while keeping other areas bone dry for the other adhesive will likely create the strongest bond. The areas where the glues overlap will be fine and may be stronger due to cross-linking.
