Heard the theme song on the radio and my grandpa mentioned he used to play a game called "Dark Castle" on the machintosh at his desk job in the 80s with his work buddies and waste company time/procrastinate, I guess some things never change!
Best sound design ever. My favorite is when he falls from a high place, he pauses and looks down in midair, makes the funniest uh oh type of sound, and then Plummets to his death. Hilarious
Gotta love how, after Duncan picks up the morning star, he stops making footfall noises... becase he's trying to sneak up on the torturer. Little touches like that are what really cemented this game as brilliantly designed. The sfx in this game are flawless... ny-ny-ny-ny-nyah! :)
Played that game so much. My parents initially didn't want me to play it because of the whip guy in the prison. They locked the 3.5" diskette in a container. Yet when they left I opened the container using a paperclip key I managed to produce. Watching Mc Guyver sure was useful 😂 Then when I heard the car I quickly had to quit the game, switch of the Apple, take out the diskette and store it in the container. Sometimes I even wiped some dust on the container again as my dad didn't use the game diskettes much 😁 The details were amazing. The small step, easily overlooked at the last part of the prison where you'd tremble and then the robor comes and shoot you. Or grabbing the key and watching the prisoners shaking their heads when you stood underneath the wrong key. That game taught me my mouse/keyboard skills. Dark Castle 2 is also amazing yet also very difficult. Never finished that one.
You can use the following tips that are helpful: You can just jump instead of using the stairs, that are much slower, to go over platforms. Some examples are: bottom left platforms on Trouble 3, bottom right platform on Knight 1, top right platform on Knight 2 and some more. In Shield 1 (or any ladder), you can duck below a ladder and press up while you are ducking. You will end up Floating off the ground at enough distance to jump to the next floor. This saves tons of time and danger. In Shield 2, the Dragon itself does not kill you, even if not stun. Just jump Forward to the right after climbing the ladder. In theory, the shield only protects you for 4 straight seconds. However, if you retap the shield key fast enough, you can prolong this time infinitely. This is useful for example to go pass the broom in Fireball 4. In Fireball 2, you can low jump from the right platform directly to the Exit. You will get stun, but not dead. In Fireball 4, you can let the eye come towards you when you are in the platform on the right. This will give you more space to open the wizards door. Prioritize death to falling into the dungeon. If you want more tips, let me know :)
David Bielsa Thanks. This recording is from 2003. I know those tips now. Also, the duck on stairs bug only works in 1.0. Check out the run I linked in the description of this video, it actually finishes beginner.
That moment when I finally beat it on beginner only to find out you have to do it all over again at intermediate... It took me another few months to finally finish the game in advanced. Good memories, thanks for posting, it was fun to see it once again even though it looks like you need some more practice before you get there.
Im looking for the name of a macintosh-game. It was an adventure arcade game that described what you where doing and what was happening in text and it was no moving pictures at all. I think it started in a castle on a mountain and then you could chose different ways. Sometimes you would met a cyklope and you would fight it, sometimes you found something that you could use. If you where really unlucky you met a tyrannosaurus rex. Then you where either killed at once or chased until you where dead. It was a kind of pick and click game but much more primitive.
Try another floppy drive, or cleaning the floppy heads. Floppies are pretty tough, most of mine still work. Also, you can get this game and other stuff at macintoshgarden dot org.
Holy shit . . . the year is 1986 . . .Alameda, CA . . . I have an 8-ball of coke sitting on the kitchen table and a gallon of white wine . . . I'd do some lines and have some wine and just play this till DAWN. Call in sick at Mariner Square Athletic Club. Fuck that noise! MEMORIES
This was super hard. My dad had a mac plus back in the late 80s and this was one of the games we had. Kings Quest, Apache Strike, PT-109, Sub battle (name?), Falcon, Airborne too. Then one day.."Dad, what is Mac Playmate?" Oh.....
Sorry, it's a hard game. Here is another playthrough where I actually beat beginner. It just takes you back to the bottom of Trouble on Intermediate. th-cam.com/video/_v4UxgYARKo/w-d-xo.html
Kiatrasi Sorry... there is another playthrough where I actually finish beginner on my channel. It is a hard game, this is just how far I got before I gave up that time :)
Oh I agree! It's damn hard, and I'm very impressed with your persistence to get to black knight that many times in row before giving up. I remember playing this one as a kid on Commodore 64, and not getting past first few screens! I never touched it since, but your video actually has sparked a new interest to try it again. Thanks for that, too :)
it was my first game back in 1990, never finished it, the knight was too hard, there was nother game with a robot you had to program in a room before it appeared in the room, at that time games were much harder ;) specially compared to atary console ones
Awesome game! I was wondering... how did you record this game onto TH-cam? Is it played on an actual Macintosh Plus or on an emulator? I would really love to hook my old Macintosh plus up to a regular tv! Any info would be greatly appreciated! :-)
KARMATIC MUSIC For this playthrough I did use an emulator, Mini vMac. For the mac plus specifically there aren't a lot of external video solutions. There are some scsi video adapters but they are very rare and expensive. Your best bet would be to get a computer with built in composite out, like the 7500 or 7600 or Beige G3.
Michael J It’s the original version, and it’s definitely way better than all the crappy ports; I’m not sure I would say it is a good game by the standards of 2019, but I do think it was a good game when it came out in 1986.
Ry The Sci-Fi Guy I just gave up on this playthrough. Here's a playthrough where I actually do beat it on beginner. th-cam.com/video/_v4UxgYARKo/w-d-xo.html It just takes you back to the bottom of trouble 3 on the intermediate difficulty though. I personally have never beaten this game on Advanced. It is a very hard game, if you didn't notice :)
I can't beat this game on hard mode. To get the fireball, you have to pass one burning eye which is already annoying but in hard mode, there is two... :/
I just wonder if there is a different ending on hard mode. I can do easy and medium difficulties but because of those stupids burning eyes, I can't do it. And I need those fireballs because of the gargoyles...but I never managed to pass quickly to avoid them...
Heard the theme song on the radio and my grandpa mentioned he used to play a game called "Dark Castle" on the machintosh at his desk job in the 80s with his work buddies and waste company time/procrastinate, I guess some things never change!
That game was so cool visually, yet infuriating gameplay.
Impressive design! great level complexity, dark atmosphere, good animations, a mix between Hunchback and Dragon's Lair.
This still looks so good. One of the very first computer games I ever played. I’ll always remember it. Definitely has a special place in my heart.
Wow... I remember this being the first game I ever played on a computer!!!! Damn does this bring some old feels back...
The sounds are absolutely bananas!
"Yeah!"
As long as the game is playable and good, I won't mind the sounds.
4:46 At least no "Saddam was here".

Now I wish avgn reviewed all copies of this game

This gives me chills... such good memories and anxiety at the same time

I loved the Easter eggs on holidays. There would be Christmas trees in the main floor on Christmas!!
Thanks for posting this - brought back a lot of happy memories :-)
Strong glypha vibes

a guy who throw a mug. he's like, what is a man?!
I remember always being stoked as a kid to play this in my gramps Mac. Good stuff
Brings back memories.
Wow!!! One of the first computer games i can remember playing. Brings back memories. Thanks for the upload .
From what I heard, the Macintosh version (Apple II or something) is 100 times more playable than the Sega Mega Drive version.
Isaac Adam Yes. The Mac version is the original, and is very playable, although very difficult.
sound design is still ear-grating though
It's BARELY more playable. Just BARELY.
Now compare this to the fucking Genesis port
The sounds are unforgettable
I remember playing this long hours into the night.
Thanks for posting! I was just telling my 6 year old she sounded like a mutant, now I have to show her this game.
As a kid, that surely was my hardest game.
Absolutely loved this game and graphics
My favorite game memory from my Mac 512k which I still own. Thanks!

*N Y A N Y A N Y A N Y A N Y A .*
This was a good game for it's time, while the Genesis and CD-i ports of Dark Castle are ATROCIOUS.
Thanks for the memories! This is one of the few Mac plays I could find.
child of cascadia I have some more on my channel. Also check out killgruz’s channel.
This game kicked my ass so hard as a kid.
Oldies the 80"S

I just beat this on Beginner mode tonight on Twitch! Took two evenings, LOL. I don't know how long Advanced will take.

I somehow remember this, I was like 5
some of the levels are just like the Donkey Kong part.
Wow, brings back memories. I still have my Mac+, but all my 3.5" floppies have been corrupted, including this game. So sad.
Try another floppy drive, or cleaning the floppy heads. Floppies are pretty tough, most of mine still work. Also, you can get this game and other stuff at macintoshgarden dot org.
Haha, rage quit at the end. I loved this game when I was a kid. SUPER hard! I remember beating it, but never on the hardest level
I mean after heading back to trouble 3 times, I was done... There's another run where I actually finish it in the description of this video.
Oh I don't blame you. Honestly that's part of the nostalgia
I beat this game when I was 10 in 86. It was a pretty hard game
I was 13 and it took me a year to beat. Bought a used Mac for cdn$2000. It was soo ahead of it's time
Ma ma
Nanananana
damn, this game used to scare the shit out of me for some reason haha

Kamakiri Sassorichan 😂
Dark Souls of the Macintosh SE/30.
The nostalgia is real haha! No idea if the game was actually hard or it was the fact it was 1995 and I was 7 years old
monstamossie The game is really hard.
This was super hard. My dad had a mac plus back in the late 80s and this was one of the games we had. Kings Quest, Apache Strike, PT-109, Sub battle (name?), Falcon, Airborne too. Then one day.."Dad, what is Mac Playmate?" Oh.....
I'm the torturer that gets beat up & passes out, then wakes up & continues torturing
These SFX cause PTSD
I enjoyed this nice game a lot...
Samson... Marvellous game... Sandbags... END
2:36 he got lucky. That whoa means you bout to lose a life lol
Great puzzle like gameplay Loved the sound effects but I found the concept of a rock wielding warrior rather odd.
Awesome.
the sfx is....special
Awww I was waiting to see the end of the game!
Sorry, it's a hard game. Here is another playthrough where I actually beat beginner. It just takes you back to the bottom of Trouble on Intermediate. th-cam.com/video/_v4UxgYARKo/w-d-xo.html
This game is so trolly
The sega version is bad but the cdi is officially unbeatable.
Jugué este juego en las macintosh en 1990 aprox. Estaba genial. Alguein sabe si aun se puede jugar.
It took me so long to find this game. Haha when I played it it was in color. It was the years of oregon trail 2
Yes, Color Dark Castle was released in 1994. I didn’t play that version as much.
@@fezdetritus that's the only version I know. I can only play the demo though. Those were the days
Can't really call it a playthrough if it isn't a playthrough :P ..never seen the Mac version though, thanks for posting.
Kiatrasi Sorry... there is another playthrough where I actually finish beginner on my channel. It is a hard game, this is just how far I got before I gave up that time :)

Kiatrasi The mac version is the original and I think it plays the smoothest. It works really well on Mini vMac.
M e m o r i e s
Omg the memories ....
This game used bit crusher?
the original mac could only do 8 bit 22 khz audio
Is it me or does this look way more decent on Mac than on Genesis?
Absolutely. The mac version is the original. The genesis port is terrible. (There's also a terrible pc port)
49k available lol
There is actually an online playable version: archive.org/details/mac_DarkCastle_1_2
THAT FUCKING GARGOYLE

That game is insanely hard
That's the way they made video games back in the 80s!
it was my first game back in 1990, never finished it, the knight was too hard, there was nother game with a robot you had to program in a room before it appeared in the room, at that time games were much harder ;) specially compared to atary console ones

@4:47 You didn't use your magic spell. TCELES B HSUP
how do you play it ? i'd love to try it again ^^
Mini vMac. Check macintoshgarden dot org
thanks
You can play it online now too! archive.org/details/mac_DarkCastle_1_2
this is so souls like, is it on steam ?
lol i should stream some dark castle. it's definitely punishing and i can play it until the end of time
oh steam, not stream lol. you can find it on macintosh garden. use mini vmac emulator.
@@fezdetritus they dont have a ps4 port? they wont make it in this modern market
You were getting so close! Good try.
Where's the ending? Why didn't you finish it?
Ry The Sci-Fi Guy I just gave up on this playthrough.
