Bird told Kevin that he should have stayed in the game. That same season Bird put up 60 against Atlanta to take back the scoring title. There were so many weapons on that team, and yet they were still one of the best passing teams that ever played.
The Celtics epitomized winning without flair. Then Jordan came along.

I mean, they keep repeating that story, but there's not much evidence here that Bird was force-feeding passes to McHale to overwhelm Kent Benson. What I see here was McHale getting most of his points by hustling down the court to get fast break shots or offensive rebound put backs.
In other words, McHale's historic night was largely a result of playing within the flow of the offense and being in the right places to get hustle points. IMO, it's a better storyline than posting up 40 times, as much as I love watching McHale post up.
The slippery eel was unstoppable by McHale
