  • Kevin McHale in his prime, unbelievable performance in the paint.....
    Watching Larry Bird passing the ball again and again to McHale in the last minutes to break his own scoring record, you can understand what kind of player was Bird.
    Wonderfull Celtics team, I like it.

    Bird and Magic played the game the way the game slhould be played.The biggest difference between them and the new wave of basketball superstars are the fundamentals. The ball always travel faster than the athlete.

    Looking back, now in my mid 40's, I wished I had appreciated the talent that was this team, much earlier than i did. Amazing Celtics teams in the 80's.

      Parrish at 7 foot, McHale basically 7 foot. 90 inch wingspan. And then Bird at 6'9 made a formable front line.

    I miss when fundamentals mattered in basketball. Both these teams could shoot and pass. Notice how many mid range shots were falling. Now a days everyone stands behind the 3 or arc and launch shots that rarely go in. Every basketball team from youth to pros should watch this game.

    Mchale is so unguardable in the post. He is so quick with his moves once he catches the ball. Don't know why other big men do not ask him for lessons.

      Bird was mainly only concerned with winning , but also needed to constantly challenge himself so that he didn’t get bored. Even though he knew McHale was breaking his current record, he just used it as a challenge to break it again. I believe if he was only interested in his stats, he could have dwarfed his record of 60. He was that good.

    Note how McHale handles this achievement. No show boating no in your face no fist pumps or taunts to the other team. There's some life lessons in here boys and girls. This style of play and hard work was a role model for me growing up. Head down - hard work and in the end it pays off.

    • @clivewarren3403
      @clivewarren3403 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually he subbed out because he didn't want to continue scoring after he had already beaten Larry Bird's record. Bird would then beat the record in less than 2 weeks vs the Hawks (at New Orleans) by going for 60. But that game was made greater by the fact that McHale didn't just run up as many points as possible so that Bird was setting a new record.
      To me, that was one of the most classy scoring records ever set, because he didn't stat pad.

    • @julianmarsh1378
      @julianmarsh1378 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@clivewarren3403 Around this time Larry said that McHale could be the best player in the NBA if he would only work harder....but that was not his nature. He played well; he was a great player. But he saw basketball as only one part of his life while the Birds, Johnsons, and Jordans acted as though it was everything. At the end of the day, I can't help think that Kevin was the happier man.

    Love this style of basketball. Great post play! Great midrange play! Great long range play! Great ball handling! Great passing! Great shooting! Great defense! Every aspect of the game on full display. The way it should be... but not today -- bummer.
    One of my favorite players, Steve Nash orchestrating the pick and roll to perfection. What a pleasure to watch. Something we don't see today --another bummer.
    Big man post/back to the basket play has been obsoleted in todays game and that's ashame. Instead, we have small ball with everyone and their brother pulling up from 40. I'm tired of watching this brand of basketball.
    The solution is simple in order to bring back soup to nuts basketball... The way basketball ought to be played and displayed, engendering more satisfaction for the viewing public... Take away the 3 point line -- the game will change for the better in quickness.
    Don't get me wrong, I love the 3 ball. I also love steak...but not everyday. Steak would get old in a hurry if it was on the menu every day. Much like the 3 ball -- I'm sick of it. Too much! How about some tacos? Spaghetti? Chicken alfredo? Barbecue chicken? Barbecue ribs? Fried chicken? Beef on bun with a side of fries and barbecue beans? Hot bowl of chili on a cold night? How about some post play? Some midrange play? Some long range play? Some pick and roll play? Some give and go play? How about having all of that in one sitting? So much more enjoyable. It used to be that way. Let's bring it back!

    I'm the biggest 80s Celtics fan ever, but that dam rim was loose for like 10 years. I assume they'd tighten it at halftime? Probably had remote control drills to discreetly tighten those bolts. Haha. It's almost along the lines of DEFLATE GATE. Different sport, different era.. SAME CITY.

    Between 1984-1989, Kevin McHale was unguardable. If Bird's not on that team, he averages 30 a night. The best post-script on this game is that Bird told him he should have gone for 60...which Bird did about a week later in New Orleans against Atlanta in one of the all-time performances in league history.

    Why are you watching this?
    Watching two great teams highlights, both teams RAN THE FLOOR. 267 total points that night, total run and gun, pick and roll, fast break, high passing game. In tonight's (3/11/22) Celtics Pistons game the combined points 213.
    McHale went 12 of 13 from the line and 22 of 28 from the field, with 10 offensive rebounds and 16 total rebounds, toss in 4 assists and 3 blocked shots. Tonight Jaylen Brown put up 22 shots, made 8. of those 22 shots, 8 were 3 pointers, made one. Went 5 for 7 at the line, and also had 8 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal.
    Yes, the game has changed. That is why we look for things like this and watch them...For Free.

    people tend to 4get that the celts scored **138**. mchale was a legend, but the celts won against 129 by the pistons b/c they were a TEAM. when kobe scored 81 in '06 the other lakers combined for only 41 (122 total). indicative of the times. the nba nowadays is nothing but no-names filling the lineup for overpaid ball-hogs who bitch-bitch-bitch when they don't have the ball 95% of the time--kobe being one of them. bird had his selflessness rewarded when he got to score 60 nine days later.

      impassable They seemed to be more aggressive than they were in 1984 when they lost, also Birds hand or finger was supposedly bothering him, but the 85 Celtics clearly didn't play the way they were capable of playing, in 84 they out muscled the Lakers and out rebounded them, they seemed to want it more in 84.

    • @jjs777fzr

      They beat the C’s because Bird injure his shooting hand in a bar brawl while there with Quinn Buckner. The old bar named Chelsea’s was about 50 yards from where I sit at the office in Boston. And don’t think I don’t think of what could have been had Bird not gotten into it with some patron. There was a good sports writeup about this and looking at it statistically Bird’s numbers went down immediately following the altercation. The bar patron literally cost Boston another title. No doubt in my mind.
