The 2D in Shadow Gens is without a doubt fantastic but I definitely wouldn't say it's better than the 3D. It's not worse or anything, both the 3D and 2D are on par with each other. Dude modded levels of this game are gonna be so fun, there's just so much to work with.
@@DolphynsDeck After Frontiers 2D Cyberspace felt super stiff lol, they turned right around here. I have zero problem with the physics and movement in this game, both in 3D and 2D.
Worth noting that yes, the caverns do in fact exist in '06. They're part of the upper path when you're running along the walls. Insanely difficult to reach, 'though not impossible, and made extremely trivial in P-06 (not a knock against P-06, it's difficult in the original because the controls fight against you) The 2D interiors are still new. The only interiors we saw in '06 were the cylindrical rooms that were typically used as mini arenas, but not entire corridors like we see here
Im so glad you talked about the lighting in act 2, honestly the lighting in general is stellar, like how you can easily see the green hue on the underside of Shadows quills and gloves when standing over the grass (much like original gens) and the ending of act 1, the camera gets little droplets of water. Even the puddles, they way they reflect the sky and background with a little distortion. And to top it off, one of my favourite features from sonic Unleashed, the background blurring, it always looked so cinematic and cool to me, i am overjoyed that it was brought back (it's most noticeable here 10:44 , pause if you need to).
Fantastic points. Far away backgrounds with blur and a little bit of white or blue hue shifting makes it look so comfortable. Reflecting color from something as simple as grass is a crazy cool detail I didn't really notice. We might be back in the era where I can literally feel the fresh air every time I see a Sonic environment.
ChaosX must be absolutely loving all of these new free HD assets this game is offering him, not only does he have all these new kingdom valley models and textures but also the 06 enemies which will improve the visuals for almost every level and of course Memphis Tennessee’s new model along with the Dusty Desert arena. Also while I still prefer the 3D just because of the higher exploration aspect the 2D in this game is still great and honestly this is the first time in a modern game where actually craved replaying a 2D stage which proves to me that 2D isn’t the issue it’s just how it’s designed. Also big the cat, hell yeah, jokes aside while I would’ve preferred someone like Abraham because that’s more personal to Shadow it’s still nice to see him especially since apparently he wasn’t actually in frontiers.
I love this comment so much ChaosX should feel satisfied knowing how similar his work was to the official take. I'd absolutely love to see some SxSG assets reused for P-06, it's only fair for the redemption arc. My #1 hope for an NPC was Abraham. Big's dialogue in later sections completely makes up for it though. Weird that he's never really talked to Shadow before despite being around eachother in Heroes. I always think ab how Colors would've been amazing if it was full 3D and then I think back to KV Act 2 and how I actually want to play it even as I type this.. it's so interesting bc Colors had the best 2D movement before this but the level design was always slow and ass.. They could've made it fun too considering they weren't locked to just boost Sonic's moveset, they also had the Wisps available to mimic the nuance of the Doom Powers. Oh well.
@@DolphynsDeck :) I am surprised at how interesting Big’s dialogue ended up being, from stuff like him canonically being the only character to meet Elise after the 06 reset to wanting to learn chaos control for fishing I never felt like I was wasting my time with him, oh and also the fact that BIG THE FUCKING CAT MADE SHADOW SMILE! Honestly in the big main levels I didn’t mind 2D and found it to be kinda fun, it’s the 2D in the more side mission type stages that I do not like, it ranges from okay to boring beyond belief and is why I don’t plan to replay the game start to finish and just revisit the actual levels, this is an idea i’ve had in my mind for awhile so I’ll just spit it out I think it would be really cool if there was a sort of “Colours Project” for Sonic Generations that not only adds all the levels from said game to gens but also combines them all too make some big stages, we already have something similar to that with that one tropical resort mod that mixes act 1 & 2 but imagine at the end of act 2 instead of the goal ring you’d smoothly transition to the beginning of act 3, this would definitely take a lot of effort but considering we have freaking Mario from Mario 64 in gens with his complete moveset I feel like this idea of mine isn’t to out there.
@@DolphynsDeck ikr! Its rare you get to see the directors actual art for the game. The most interesting thing about that piece of art is that 2 of the poses got reused for sonic rivals 2 renders.
I think they found the perfect balance between 3D and 2D with this game. Both sets of levels are fantastic, but I believe the best part of the 2D levels have gotta be the camera angles. I also love how the open zone has actual platforming integrated into the terrain. The challenge levels are great too, I just wish they had at least one character specific chellenge for each world like the original Generations did. If there were any issues I have it's that the boost feels very nerfed in this game and that I don't like Shadow's boost animation.
Agreeing with all of this. The camera angles had me so quiet (and I'm usually a yapper). They don't overstay their welcome, similar to the Intro Animations in certain Unleashed levels. Gives you enough of a breather without dragging on. Plus, you get gorgeous looks at the atmosphere. One of my favorite parts of Sonic's story was how they incorporated the friends into gameplay. It made their presence feel like it meant something other than moral support. I popped off for the Chaotix appearance in-game in Forces Overclocked because it felt right. It's kinda sad how they've reduced the boost to a run button considering how powerful you felt smashing into enemies, chairs & pots in Unleashed and Generations. Even in Frontiers they removed the ability to hurt enemies with it.
12:45 Kingdom Valley act 2 isn't just my favorite 2d level in the game, it's the best 2d level in the boost formula imo. The flow state in this level is unparalleled. It feels so snappy and good. Makes me think of Sonic Rush. And the tower climb near the latter half of the level makes me think of the Rooftop Run clock tower climb from Unleashed but even BETTER. Such an amazing level!
2-D levels have a place in modern sonic. It doesn’t matter what dimension the level takes place in as long as the level design is good it will be rewarding
theres a trick with the doom surf where if you press the boost button right after touching the water and then repeatedly jump you go even faster than boosting. you can only do it when you activate the doom surf tho (or if you hit a ring thats in the air)
I really hope there’s more exploitable tech like the trees in Kingdom Valley Act 1 so players can experiment and soar around before they get the Doom Wings.
The coolest thing is that cavern segment in Act 1, that actually was in 06 in the beginning section. It was made similarly to how is it is here. With the dash panels and the ramp that would shoot you across the other side of the area. It didn’t sadly have any impact with how slow 06 was lol.
🤝 finally, someone who understands my point 😉 never in a million years would I have expected to like 2d this much and I'm glad I'm not just going insane??
@@DolphynsDeck I initially thought that the 2nd Acts are gonna be irrelevant for me but damn, they cooked so well here I actually stand in the top 10s on Xbox's leaderboard for the stages I mentioned! They were so fun to learn and try to speedrun.
These days you'll get clowned for any opinion tbh I'm not even an objective believer of the title, I just wanted to share a thought that stuck with me about Act 2.
Honestly I really enjoy some of rhe 2nd act levels. The 2d segements in frontiers didnt really feel that right. With rhe new mechanics, the 2d just feels good. Plus i love how they made 2d a second act specific thing, its so good.
I'm so shocked by it Lmao It really helps the challenge levels too! I had very little desire to return to Sonic's challenges because they were stiff or just awkward, but Shadow's actually make me want to SPEEDRUN them. They're that fun.
Kingdom Valley Act 1 is my favorite level in the game by a fair bit. Act 2 is cool, but running through Soleanna Castle in full 3D again felt so good. Doesn't hurt that the original Kingdom Valley is one of my favorite Sonic levels.
I feel Act 2 had better scenery and more going on in the gameplay but Act 1 felt right seeing all the branching paths to your left and right, it made the area feel expansive just like the Kingdom Valley hub world.
While I do this this is some of the best 2d in 3d Sonic, I still want a fully 3d game. We haven't gotten one since 2009. Although I would like for the Modern Games to have 2d games as well, akin to rush and the advance games
