    • Disturbed - The Sound...
Do you want to have fun? Huh? I caannn'ttt HEARRRR you!
All I hear is the sound of silence.
    It really Disturbs me too.
Well, anyway....the reason this is such a fun reaction is that I am going to react with this old lady to the Disturbed cover of "Sound of Silence" then we are going to watch and react to the original version in Black and White from Simon and Garfunkel. Oh, my goodness it is fun guys. You must watch it all the way to the end. It is an absolute must-watch.

I’m a 56 year old US Army Cold War Veteran, always liked the S & G original, then I ran across Disturbed’s cover. I cried, I had goosebumps, it effected me like very few songs ever have. I’m an old Rock/Metal guy, have been a fan of Disturbed but didn’t know about them doing this cover until I ran across it on TH-cam

As a 72 year old woman whose husband was in Vietnam, I have definitely heard Simon & Garfunkle's original song many, many times. This was huge during that war. When I fist began watching TH-cam about 10 years ago, this was one of the songs I first watched and thought that I could never like it any more than I did at that time. (I loved the fact that it was easy to actually hear all the lyrics.) I was wrong. Disturbed's version just blew me away. I felt much more emotion with Disturbed version. Bravo! Bravo!

Simon & Garfunkel sound ... "Cute", I never really paid attention to the meaning of the lyrics.
David (from Disturbed) gives meaning and intensity to every word he says. It gains so much more impact with his delivery.

I was born in 1998 and grew up listening to the original Simon & Garfunkel version of “The Sound of Silence,” and it was one of my favorites as a child. Disturbed was playing a concern near my hometown in Ohio in highschool and I went with my friends. They played this song, fire erupted from the stage, a storm was brewing throughout the concert and lightning hit (literally) when this song was introduced... and I already knew the words, but they felt powerful and god-like in that moment. I’ll never forget when everyone crowded into the pavilion and raised their arms, and truly related to the words that were sang so long ago by a new voice. It was special.

Despite being sick that day, lead singer David Draiman delivered a performance for the ages, complete with an orchestra. Conan celebrated the video of their performance as it was the first video from his show to get 100 million views.

I really thank you for your response. Yes, life can be brutal. We were introduced to it’s brutality when we, as young men (as teenagers) made the first official landing of troops in a third world country called Vietnam. A few of us survived, but more lost their lives. This happened only a few months after the song was first released. This rendition was not full of peace and flowers as Simons, it didn’t need to be. The responses you’ve gotten, from followers shows controversy in a positive way. I hope we heed the warning, and change our outlook on life. I believe there is still hope. Thank you Simon and thank you David, and thank you for being exactly who you both are. - Joe Redfeather -

I agree.. for a song with such depth and meaning, I felt the .message was lost because it was too rushed and felt meaningless! I think through the years as SIMON and Garfunkel matured in their own musical talents, and even their own understanding of the songs message, they improved greatly on it! Beautiful harmony andover the acoustics , but at the end of the day, I still love Disturbed version much better.. Both are great in their own rights!

  • @barbaraheilman321

I saw Simon & Garfunkel on a video when they were much older and they still had a great sound between them. Harmony was wonderful. Disturbed's rendition was like a 2023 version of 1964 song. The Official Video has a wonderful moving Black & White of the way these word's would play out on a screen. Until I saw the video, I was less aware of the impact. The people on one island had the sheet music they wrote but no one sang or played their music, and the other group had the instruments, which maybe they had no music to play. The video starts out with all the instruments being trashed and junked. I have watched that video probably 30 times now. Powerful video! We were warned in 1964 and now once again, this powerful voice has warned us what has happened to us in 59 years.

So... storytime. My 70+ mum basically came running to me one day telling me all about this new song she had heard on the radio and how good it was. She didn't know by whom, she didn't remember the title just said it was silence something. Some time went by and then it came on the radio when we were together and again she was all Ohhh, it's this one, this is the song, listen to this song! It was this one she meant.
It's so funny how I had to tell her that she already knew the song but the Simon and Garfunkle version. She hadn't connected the two until I made her compare them.
Needless to say but I love this song. Both the original and this one. And this version gives me chills too. Again, I'm not one of the youngsters on here even if this song came out before my time. But I have their "best of" album. Simon and Garfunkel did great music.

I grew up in the 60's and always loved Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence". When my son showed me Disturbed's music video of their cover of it, it just reached into my soul! I am SO glad you reacted to the music video rather than the live version-- which is great, but it's the visuals of the video that make it SO powerful! Now, react to Pentatonix' cover of the Sound if Silence. If you are not familiar with Pentatonix, they are 5 person a capella group that will absolutely blow you away. All three versions are masterpieces in their own right, so it's not a matter of one being "better" than another. They are all different, but equally powerful. Great reaction!

Like many other reactors, you mention that the voice becomes stronger starting with the third verse. What almost no one seems to recognize is that he jumps up a full octave (displaying the very wide range of his voice). It is the higher tone, along with volume, that makes the song get more and more dramatic.

If you don't know them, you have to meet the best male and female TODAY!!! The undisputed best male singer in the world is "DIMASH"!! Sings S. O. S. a french song and Sinful Passion. With many others. He is 26 from Kazakhstan. e sings in 12 languages and has a range from Bass to a D 8 so high it's not on a piano. What can he sing? ANYTHING? The female is Korean, her name is "So Hyang" she does not sing for money or fame. In fact, SONY has tried to sign her for 15 years. She sings for the comfort of the people. Ovarian and uterine cancer when she was 21 and survived, so it's for to and because of the Lord. I go back to Dolly Parton so I know but Whitney is an ICON, however rules, law, and records are meant to be broken. Check out I Will Always Love you, along with another Korean KPOP singer named "Ailee" both sing I Will Always Love You very excellent!! So Hyang also sings Lean on Me with Michael Bolton watching her. "Arirang Alone" is a 600-year folk song she re-arranges and blows everybody away. Want more? All this time nobody could compete with Barbara Streisand with the song Memory from the Broadway show Cats that is until now enter So Hyang. You Raised Me Up etc. Enjoy!!

Also, whether or not you believe in spirit guides, I recently discovered that I am blessed to have some and decided to start listening to them. They actually led me to Disturbed and David Draiman on TH-cam and their cover B&W 4K video of Simon and Garfunkels The Sound of Silence. My spirit guides are screaming at me to tell all of you that if we lose our Democracy we will lose our freedom to listen to the music of our choice like Disturbed! If THEY can ban our books, THEY can ban/outlaw our music 🎶! Love you all, Diane ❤

I Originally by Simon & Garfunkel in 1964 it was a warning.. how technology was separating people..as a Dream by Paul...and as the future from there has shown true..Disturbed did a cover which brings so much emotion..anger to this warning..as we have gone beyond this warning. I love this song cover and have loved Disturbed since they came out back in '94..David is Classically trained and goes above his normal heavy metal to show the emotion. With the world we live in now..with Covid..this is ever more prevalent..as I have said every single time I have shared this..if this does not make you feel..does not give you goosebumps you are not human. Much love
*edit* there is a live version of this song from Conan...with that there are two sections where 'autotune' is used during the live performance. DAVID WAS AGAINST THIS..but he was also very sick, had a fever and was not sure he could do the show. He is seated the whole time of the live version. This is testament to his abilities as he sounds absolutely amazing and the autotune is only used in two very small sections. This man's voice is of the God's

I have to say,as good as S & G were/are,I much prefer the newer slower version by Disturbed. To me it has more depth and meaning, and his voice is extraordinary, the rawness and grit coming out in the latter part of the song is unbelievable.(by the way, love the hair color).

As many have said, S&G version was a light warning.
Davids version is the "you didn't listen to the warning and now I'm angry" vibe. And Paul Simon even said, this version is what they tried to get to.

I love your reaction, I think it was fantastic that you watched the original and the Disturbed version. Most of the time when someone reacts, they react to one or the other and the video most use for the S&G version is from the concert in Central Park and I just don't think that version is very good. I just absolutely love the Disturbed version and in case nobody else has said it yet Paul Simon said it was the best version of the song that's ever been done and you need to watch the live performance on Conan.

    • @oldguyreactions
      @oldguyreactions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yea, I had to watch the original to verify what I remember. I loved the original, but holy moly, the Disturbed one was incredible. It is for sure the best version right now. Obviously, I give props to Paul for writing such an amazing song, but it is now a Disturbed song in my mind.
I watched the Conan live and it seemed much slower and less impact emotionally for me. I am sure the original Disturbed recording that had so much power will be next to impossible to duplicate live. The more it is sung, the less emotion and power the singer will have.

This one you are talking about is the Conan O'Brien Show performance of 3/28/2016 which was done just prior to a music award show that Disturbed was in. That performance was done when David was sick with a fever and sitting on a stool. There were the 5 members of Disturbed plus another 15 to make the orchestra behind David. The audience gave a standing ovation and applause for over 10 minutes, the set has been viewed over 100 million times (the most for any of Conan's shows), and the backstage people come out to see who was singing.
Every show I have ever viewed sounds just as good whether it was studio or live.

This is the best cover of a song I have ever heard with the exception of Pentatonix hallelujah. Simon and Garfunkel sing the song as a warning. Disturbed shows the rage that we have not yet learn the lesson. Pentatonix does are cover that is more hopeful.
I don't know if you reacted to it but down with the sickness is a very popular song and if you haven't reacted to it the beginning of the song may be very familiar to you. They recently released a cover of stings if I ever lose my faith and you. It is very good.
David Draiman was raised as an orthodox Jew. He went to school to become a cantor. Cantors sing what the rabbi has just read from the torah. Cantors have very deep, rich, luscious Voices that need to hold notes in a low Register. It is beautiful to hear Even if you don't speak Hebrew. I don't speak Hebrew but I love friday night services when there is a cantor. Not all synagogues have cantors. An example of art imitating life There was a movie way back called the jazz singer with Neil diamond. He is a cantor and comes from a long line of cantors. It is the family business. He Wants to leave that behind to pursue his music, jazz.
