As a note, btw, about the various plagiarism accusations -- when we say 'falsely' accused, we mean that quite literally. They were cleared of any wrong doing in court for the accusations that went that far.

About the companies wanting the military exemption... Basically they wanted it for their own artists, and they took BTS' name to convince them.
But then their plan backfired, letting BTS postpone their military enlistment, but not changing anything for their artists because of the condition that they need to get the order of cultural merit.
So they started complaining that the law was made only for BTS.
Bighit and BTS didn't do anything the whole time but BTS still got their enlistment postponed 😂

The two songs that got criticism for misogyny were Boy In Luv and War of Hormones. It was a ridiculous exaggeration. For one thing, there were other groups putting out FAR more offensive songs (including one kpop group who had a performance that literally had women in collars on all fours like dogs) who received no backlash at all.
But the lyrics themselves? War of Hormone is a song literally about the experience of teenage boys who are at war with their hormones and noticing women. The music video is clearly satirical (and very funny), but people took offense to it nonetheless. Here are the lyrics, per Doolset:
Thank you so much for existing
Please call me, I’ll buy you a meal
Ah, these days it feels crazy, crazy
The girls’ outfits that make me cough, cough
    are all see-through, see-through
(Very much) thank you! They improve my eyesight
(Natural Lasik) I don’t need to spend money
I’ll be in panic I’ll be a fan
And I’ll be a man of you you you you babe
I can’t help but keep looking at the girls’ midriff (Yup)
The girls are equations, and us guys are solutions (Yup)
I become so sweaty and weak for no reason
    Please wear them more, high-heels
I’m eighteen, I know everything I’m supposed to know
that women are the best in the world
Yes I’m a bad boy so i like bad girl
Come here, baby, we’ll make a good couple
    Hello hello (what!)
    Hello hello (what!)
Tell me what you want right now
    Hello hello (what!)
    Hello hello (what!)
Imma give it to you girl right now
Though you’re not mine, you’re the best
My body becomes all squirmish when I’m with you
[A literal translation would be “My body that twists in front of you.” 몸이 배배 꼬이다 is an idiom used when someone is so bored or shy that their body feels like it’s physically twisting itself.]
Though I want to get close to you,
    You’re too beautiful
Women are the best gift, gift
My only and true wish is you, you
    If it’s you, I’m ok
Oh, every day I can’t control myself
You look great from the front, great from behind
From head to toe, the best, the best
La la la la la la la la la
Great from the front, great from behind
La la la la la la la la la
Even the way you walk is the best, the best
It’s not worth even half a penny
I have no interest in women who I’ll hang out only once or twice
But, looking at you, I learn the introduction to body architecture
    [Movie reference: 건축학개론 (Architecture 101)]
My testosterone rising dense and heavy
After I win the fight with the hormones,
I study about you, your existence is against the rules, foul play
If the standard of beauty is the ocean, you’re the deep ocean itself
A cultural asset of beauty that should be taken care of on a national level
Her hair, body, waist, legs, and areas that can’t be said
If anyone says he’s not interested in them, I’d be dumbfounded as a man
Even a small gesture makes me go crazy
Girl, your temptations make me sit in front of my computer every night
    Lady first for her
Who said women are cold icebergs, let it go
Females that make me go crazy, they stimulate me every day
Today as well, I burst my pimple after fighting my hormones
Chorus repeats and then there is a bridge, but you get the basic idea. The music video for it puts the lyrics even more into perspective, heh.
I'm not sure if people took more offense to the lyrics of Boy In Luv or the music video. They are pursuing a girl rather aggressively in the music video, and play with some common kdrama tropes like grabbing her wrist to pull her to where they want her, or pushing her against a locker. The whole point of the song/music video was that they had absolutley no idea how to effectively pursue a girl ... by the end of it they calm down, whip out a rose, and sing softly to her.
RM, who is one of their primary lyricists, was genuinely distraught at the accusations of misogyny, and I respect the fact that rather than get defensive, he sought to educate himself more on the issue so that he could understand why it would be taken that way and avoid any such issues in the future.

I feel like no matter what BTS was doing, they were throwing stuff in their way just to make it harder. After I watched some other videos, I was confused on why their songs were being attacked, and then started watching more videos and youtube comments, chats and realized it was the "K Pop" industry that was working to keep BTS out! This was so unreal to me, the measure people/fandoms would take to attack BTS (these young boys/young adults), adults in power position attacking these young boys/young adults working hard to achieve their dream, not trying to take short cuts but putting in the work, yet they kept attacking!

Agree. I know the vid you are talking about.. they let that slide ... never batted an eye but because it's BTS they make a big deal and yes in boy in luv that scenario is pretty common in kdramas.. they praise those dramas but because it's bts it's awful.

Fan wars are a serious problem in the kpop industry, but that being said, there is a lot of evidence that rival companies were involved. The variety show they went on who confronted them about the plagiarism accusations, one of them had a direct connection to a rival company. The news reporter who questioned them on plagiarism was also from a rival company. And their treatment by Naver (which is like SK's Google) is almost certainly tied to the fact that they have ties with a rival company.
It is important to note that before BTS, there were three companies that completely dominated the entertainment industry in South Korea, referred to commonly as the "Big 3". BTS was the first artist *not* from the Big 3 to ever win a grand prize at a music show. And Bang PD, the then CEO of BigHit, refused to sell BTS's contract to one of those larger companies. (It is a common practice for the larger companies to buy out the contract of groups that show the potential to become 'too' successful and then let them flounder without promotion so that their favorite groups don't have to face the competition.)

  • @fierte
    @fierte 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

to clarify the enlistment law revision part, the entertainment agencies wanted the revision for THEIR artists. Big Hit has never asked for it. But the other labels banded together (excluding Big Hit who were not invited to this) to try and petition the gov for exemption from enlistment for kpop artists by saying "imagine not exempting a group like BTS". But it backfired on these other agencies because the law revision was made in such a way that BTS could delay enlistment but others (which was the goal of these labels) could not. So they filed a complaint saying the entire revision was made to just allow BTS to delay enlistment instead of supporting other kpop artists. So in the end, they wanted the revision and tried to use BTS to get it but ended up benefiting BTS only. Karma works in mysterious ways.

    - It's still going on. Even since this video was made earlier this year there have been several incidents.
    - V was practically raised by his grandmother because his parents had to work far away so she was like a second mother to him. He chose to talk about it because ARMY had noticed that he looked sad and defeated and worried about him and he didn't want them to worry.
    - When they were practicing in the hallway it was even the year they won the album of the year award.
    - Tip: If you react to BTS mvs you don't have to worry about copyright. Just include the intro and Big Hit/Hybe is perfectly fine with it. They consider it free adverticement.
    - I would recommend reacting to a few songs to make up your own picture of the guys and maybe then watch an introduction to the members followed by a solo song from each of them? 🤔 🤷‍♀️
(No matter what please remember to turn on the captions, their lyrics are amazing)
    My recommendations would be:
    Whole group:
    Fake Love
    Black Swan
    Dionysus
    Mic Drop
    Rap line:
    Cyphers 1-4
    Ugh!
    Vocal line (way better live):
    The Truth Untold
    House Of Cards
No matter what - remember to enjoy your BTS journey. 💜😄💜

*Hello, In regards to the comments from the rappers...* 4:43 to give it context, BTS were asked to come on a radio show for a 'Hip Hop Invitational 1st Anniversary Broadcast, their fans were there, and some of the underground rappers started to jokingly comment about idols being present. This somehow gradually ended up in a full-fledged conversation about idol rappers vs. other rappers. At the time, BTS was still not as well-known as they are now. In fact, they had not even been debuted for a year and were still a rookie group.
Most of the exchange was between B-Free and the BTS members. Although the atmosphere started off lightheartedly, it soon became a bit tense, as B-Free took quite a few jabs with difficult questions aimed at the boys. It ended up getting pretty heated, but RM and SUGA handled the situation well, and it eventually got defused. They dealt with B-Free and the other rappers through their music. RM and SUGA both had mixtapes they released that had songs about it, and all three of them wrote songs for their album O!RUL8,2? - released 9/11/2013. Here is one:
    BTS WE ON - th-cam.com/video/ar7_p4k7gJQ/w-d-xo.html
*Regarding the Military Exemption:* 38:58 BTS are the only K Pop Idols, and the youngest people, to receive the Award for Cultural Merit. That would mean that the law only applies to them, and they didn't even get a full exemption, Just an extension to enlist by age 30 instead of age 28. The agencies Used BTS as an example in order to get their artists a FULL Exemption, which didn't happen, and they didn't the age extension either because it doesn't apply to them.
I am including here a medley of 7 songs (Mostly B Side favorites) in a *10 minute video that BTS dropped for their fanbase (ARMY) during the 8 year anniversary celebration of their debut (6/13/2013).* The video should give you a good picture of their diversity and range of music over the years from debut to 2020:

i understand what you meant about with kevin hart you were probably referring to cancel culture however this incident with bts was way more serious than the normal incidents of bringing up someone saying something in the past.
this was 100% politically driven because Japan had colonized korea as well many other countries. the u.s due to world wars only truly knows Japan's point of view and we learn about things in Japan's perspective however theres so much we dont know from the other countries perspectives cause of the power imbalance and translations.
in fact up until this point in 2018 korea had never translated their perspective into English before so majority of the world who doesnt speak Korean doesnt actually know everything about what south Korea went through during that time period that theyre still feeling the effects of even today.
so jimin wearing that shirt wasnt and shouldn't have been a issue because of the history koreans should be allowed to celebrate being free from their control.
but like the clip said because bts was getting popular in Japan people who dont like koreans in Japan wanted to tarnish bts reputation and try to stop them from gaining success in Japan as well as try to get back at the Korean government because of what happened the day before in the courts.
if you didnt know its actually really dark history what Japanese soldiers did to koreans especially korean women during that time i suggest researching it to get a better understanding.
besides that bts represents peace and they bring people all over the world together and theyve shown support to many people and situations some would deem controversial. different countries have different political backgrounds cultures and things they and some of their people think is right or wrong and if someone agrees with something they deem wrong it starts a heavy influxes of hatred at bts , their fans and even sometimes koreans in general.
example just because of the way bts look, present themselves, speak up for equality and their personal clothing styles people deem them less manly or even gay. which becomes a issue to not only homophobic people in general but also countries who consider being gay against their religion or punishable by jail or death. so you can see how the people in those countries would react in a negative way to the point of it being terrifying for bts and bts fandom to witness.
thats one of the extremes another example is people in america being overly patriotic and thinking only English speaking people or only Americans should win american awards. this starts to bring out xenophobia and racism within the media ,music industry and general public. every time bts wins or does something incredible in America people start to target them due to those in my opinion wrong beliefs.
i can go on and on in detail about this because some take this as surface level "theyre a music group recieving hate all public figures recieve " but its really deeper than just that. its because bts scares people cause many dont want equality or peace between everyone in the world regardless of differences in culture, religion, race, gender, sexualities, nationality etc so theyre afraid of what bts and bts army represents.

Over in Korea the “subculture” of kpop idols is extremely competitive and deeply hierarchical, so when bts stepped on the scene they got extreme criticism from the underground rap scene where a couple of them were from, claiming they were no longer hip hop, and real pushback from idol fans and big companies in the industry (JYP, SM, YG). Basically if you debut these companies you are on top, you have the money and connections, you get the gigs and you get a lot of “favours,” and if you come from a smaller company (BigHit was basically nonexistent lol) you get nothing. These boys literally went from rags to riches on the backs of their devoted fans, and then faced abuse for playing a game they weren’t really expected or permitted to play. It’s similar here for sure but not at that scale, and Korea is a culture of connections and seniority without much budge, extremely gatekeepy.

Some songs of them show why BTS and ARMY are so affectionate.
MOVE, SEA are songs about themselves having a hard time(As you know, BTS is from a small company that almost went bankrupt, so they have been very looked down and hated by Korean broadcasting stations and other K-pop fandom.), and 2!3! is a song to comfort ARMY who have struggled and been hurt to protect BTS.
And Magic Shop, Make it right, We are Bulletproof : the Eternal are songs that expresses gratitude for the fans who have protected BTS and grown up together.

Hi Steve! Since you’ve been asking how best to proceed next, I’d say don’t delay: DIVE into their music… Their discography is HUGE because they’ve worked hard since their debut in 2013, producing at least 2 albums a year. They have over 200 songs, including solo mixtapes by different members, and Japanese albums (their second language, English being a third/foreign language to them). One thing to note is that their music has evolved greatly, since they were teenagers when they began, and their focus and interests have naturally changed over the years. It’s actually super interesting to watch their evolution and how they have always explored different genres.
I would suggest first watching their iconic Music Videos (MV) from different albums, to get a sense of their character, sound and vibes. You could do this either chronologically, or start with more recent works and go backwards, which would be my recommended approach.
Along the way, you could sample their LIVE performances as they have superb energy and charisma on live stages. If you like their dance and choreography, they also upload dance practice videos which are absolute gems.
Please note that their Official MVs have captions, with lyrics.
For songs without official MVs, there are fan-produced LYRIC videos, but the various translations are not always accurate. (Zaty Farhani is fairly accurate if you have to choose).
The most reliable reference for their song lyrics is DOOLSET, who provides excellent translations, and even notes, cultural footnotes and explanations.
To help you navigate, here is a summary of their discography:
    SCHOOL TRILOGY:
    - 2 Cool 4 Skool (2013) - MV: No More Dream
    - O!RUL8,2? (2013) - MV: N.O
    - Skool Luv Affair (2014) - MV: Just One Day
    YOUTH TRILOGY:
    - The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 (2015) - MV1: I Need You; MV2: Dope
    - The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 (2015) - MV: Run
    - The Most Beautiful Moment in Life,Young Forever (2016) - MV: Fire
    CONCEPT ALBUMS:
    - WINGS (2016) - MV: Blood, Sweat & Tears
    - You never walk alone (2017) - MV1: Spring Day; MV2: Not Today
    LOVE YOURSELF TRILOGY:
    - LY: HER (2017) - MV: DNA
    - LY: TEAR (2018) - Fake Love
    - LY: ANSWER (2018) - IDOL
    MAP OF THE SOUL:
    - MOTS: PERSONA (2019)
    - MOTS: 7 (2020)
    - BE (2021); MV - Dynamite (1st English song)
    - Butter (single - 2nd English song)
    - Permission to Dance (single - 3rd English song)
Note: There are many excellent songs among their B-tracks that are fan favourites. So while you may start with the selected MV for the main tracks, there are lyric videos for all the songs, plus numerous compilations of live stages on YT.
    Welcome to the rabbit hole!

Hi Steve, new subscriber here. Yes, there is another video called 'Who is BTS, The Seven Members of Bangtan". It's a wonderful way to learn what each member did, or did not, bring to the table. I found it fascinating to learn that, for instance, of the seven members...only two, Jimin and J Hope, had any dance experience, only two, RM and Suga, had vocal (rap) experience and one with no experience at all was literally picked off the streets for his looks! They have worked VERY hard to get where they are. I have such admiration for their talent, hard work, dedication and, mostly, for their songwriting/lyrics/message. I am one of the older fans and I look forward to your journey. ARMY grandma (64)

The song is called "WAR OF HORMONE" and it's basically what it sounds like. Teenage boys that are maturing, singing about attraction to girls. There's a bit of satire as well........ Also, the lyrics would be considered extremely extremely tame from the american and western standpoint...... the title lets you know that it's a song about young men waring with their own hormones, that was the point 🤷🏾‍♀️ I didn't find anything wrong with it.

There is no doubt that the big 3 companies that controlled KPOP when BigHit started, actively worked against BTS with money and directed opposition. They also controlled the TV networks, so much of BTS’s limited time was obviously directed.
The antifeminist lyrics and portrayal they refer to, I think, refer to the portrayal of the girl. The guys seem spot on, but the girl is strictly how a guy might think. That’s all I can come up with. Also, there is a place the girl is manhandled, but the 1st time I saw it, it was a behind the scenes where the second the director yelled cut, Jin started bowing low and apologizing. The girl smiled and was reassuring him, so, I thought it was pretty hysterical. I do think it very wise that RM goes for feminist eyes on interactions and lyrics.
A really great video that is about 30 minutes, that discusses each member joining BTS as well as the history of the beginning of BTS, with humor, is The Most Beautiful Life Goes On by Asian Theory. The series you are asking about the The Rise of Bangtan. I recommend the one more video and then start music. Then if you want to do the long series, interspersed with other things, you will be better able to judge. I find The Rise of Bangtan tedious after awhile, tho it is beautifully done. I must not be real Army, choke!

hard to watch. youre right, it hurts people. and this started while they were still young! people were clearly jealous bec they are so talented but comes from a small label. there are a lot more hate to BTS than whats shown here , and its still continuing now. thats why ARMYs and BTS are together, forever bulletproof!! 💜 thanks for watching this.

Edited to answer your questions as I watch, they're at the end of my comment. Subscribed , nice reaction I'm glad you liked them! Please react to the most beautiful moment in life goes on by the Asian Theory. It's a good one to get to know them. Then check out BTS room live to get a sample of their songs through the years. Ty for reacting 💜
As to the misogynistic lyrics, it was war of hormone and it talked about the feeling male teens think about girls. It was a little objectifying, but not really lol.
I'm a 49 yr old American woman & I consider myself a feminist, & by western standards it was nothing. I still love that song. It talked about wanting girls to wear high heels and they liked see through clothes, that the girl looked good head to toe and everything in between.
It was so very minor especially when you consider the things male artists say about women in American music. Korea is more conservative than we are here, but idk if it was more western or Korean fans that objected, or even if it was fans or antis.
while I don't object to the song, I did appreciate RM & bighit apologizing & consulting women though, that's a nice gesture.
It was most certainly the fans. There are a lot of groups who have toxic fans. Fan wars are a real thing they do. It's a really competitive market there, and fan voting and streaming is a large portion of the final score.
Oh so you don't forget since you didn't have a pen, it's the white paper project.
    Hope that helped

It is very surprising that they went through all this in their 20s. And it is very shameful that most of the assaults are from Koeans. As a Korean, I thank foreign and national Army because BTS and their effort wouldn't be respected without them. If I were one of them, I could not stand it and go crazy. So I really want them to be successful and happy.

English Lyrics - War Of Hormone - BTS ..... (translation credit - Doolset Bangtan Lyrics)
[* a good example - this line above was translated as "Girls are maths problems, we just do them"]
I become so sweaty and weak for no reason
    Please wear them more, high-heels
I’m eighteen, I know everything I’m supposed to know
that women are the best in the world
Yes I’m a bad boy so i like bad girl
Come here, baby, we’ll make a good couple
    Hello hello (what!)
    Hello hello (what!)
Tell me what you want right now
    Hello hello (what!)
    Hello hello (what!)
Imma give it to you girl right now
Though you’re not mine, you’re the best
My body becomes all squirmish when I’m with you
[* A literal translation - “My body that twists in front of you.” 몸이 배배 꼬이다 is an idiom used when someone is so bored or shy that their body feels like it’s physically twisting itself. ]
Though I want to get close to you,
    You’re too beautiful
Women are the best gift, gift
My only and true wish is you, you
    If it’s you, I’m ok
Oh, every day I can’t control myself
You look great from the front, great from behind
From head to toe, the best, the best
La la la la la la la la la
Great from the front, great from behind
La la la la la la la la la
From head to toe, the best, the best
La la la la la la la la la
Great from the front, great from behind
La la la la la la la la la
Even the way you walk is the best, the best
It’s not worth even half a penny
I have no interest in women who I’ll hang out only once or twice
But, looking at you, I learn the introduction to body architecture
    [*Movie reference: 건축학개론 (Architecture 101)]
My testosterone rising dense and heavy
After I win the fight with the hormones,
I study about you, your existence is against the rules, foul play
If the standard of beauty is the ocean, you’re the deep ocean itself
[*Wordplay: 심해 can be (1) a variation of 심하다 (verb; is too much, is too serious), or (2) 심해 (深海; deep sea).]
A cultural asset of beauty that should be taken care of on a national level
[*Wordplay: 문화재 (文化財; cultural asset) has two types: 유형 (有形; tangible; buildings, books, drawings, etc.) and 무형 (無形; intangible; dance, music, craft techniques, etc.),
where 형 (形) means a format. By writing 미형 (美形) 문화재, he means to say “the beauty type” cultural asset. ]
    Hello hello (what!)
    Hello hello (what!)
Tell me what you want right now
    Hello hello (what!)
    Hello hello (what!)
Imma give it to you girl right now
Though you’re not mine, you’re the best
My body becomes all squirmish when I’m with you
Though I want to get close to you,
    You’re too beautiful
Women are the best gift, gift
My only and true wish is you, you
    If it’s you, I’m ok
Oh, every day I can’t control myself
You look great from the front, great from behind
From head to toe, the best, the best
(Because of who?) Because of women
(Because of who?) Because of hormones
(Because of who?) Because I’m a man
(Because of who?) Because of women
(Because of who?) Because of women
(Because of who?) Because of hormones
(Because of who?) Because I’m a man
(Because of who?) Because of women
Women are the best gift, gift
My only and true wish is you, you
    If it’s you, I’m ok
Oh, every day I can’t control myself
You look great from the front, great from behind

La la la la la la la la la
Great from the front, great from behind
La la la la la la la la la
Even the way you walk is the best, the best
Note: It's a joke that The lyrics of this song were deemed misogynistic for objectifying women. BTS’ agency took the criticism onboard, acknowledged the issue and publicly released a statement to apologize for past mistakes and to promise to learn more.RM gets professors of womens studies to review all songs now. He has suffered depression and anxiety about his lyrics and public perception since this. If anything, this was a song poking fun about their own gender for being stupid boys around women, even the filmclip highlighted how teen boys hormones are crazy. Even the name - War of Hormone says it all. When you consider how many western songs refer to women as hoes and much worse , you have to ask yourself, what was the real attack here?

They have proven before that the other companies would agitate the fans of other bands to exacerbate the hate and attacks against BTS.
The so called concerned journalist that acused them of plagiarism during a press conference was actually a staff reporter for another label.
Saddest things - this is only a very small example of the hatred BTS has received over the years.... and the worst of the hatred was aimed at them when most of them were still teens themselves..

It's amazing to me that in their own country, South Korea, they are not openly celebrated for their achievements, even through all the hell they were/are put through, they made it. They are not played on the radio there, not on their tv's, in their own country because the BIG 3 control the media and BTS doesn't belong to any of the big 3. So these very young boys that started having haters attack them at such a young age, maliciously attack them, not just saying mean words but actually trying to make it impossible for them to make it, still having to fight, thank goodness for ARMY. I see a lot posts now on how toxic ARMY is, but, really? Go back through and see what the other fandoms posted on FB, TH-cam, Instagram and other social medias about BTS and they have the audacity to try to say ARMY's toxic? I'm not ARMY, I don't belong to any fandom but I love BTS and am grateful that BTS has ARMY! I find it amazing that they "music industry" used BTS as the leading example for the the reason of wanting to change the law, but when the law was changed, had specific criteria, they banded together to file and say it was unrealistic, really? BTS fought through so much, made to where they are, achieved that presidential award (probably wrong name), but now, it's unrealistic, really? BTS had/has to fight against their own country's music industry, against the world's racism, hatred, I know now why ARMY is protective!!! Thanks for sharing.

    1) SM entertainment
    2)YG entertainment
    3) JYP entertainment
Any band from 3 companies already have big followings before their debut.
Since Big Hit was small, Korea doesn't really care. They will only follow the bands that come from the top 3 entertainment companies.

When I hear about the past criticism leveled against BTS for misoginistic lyrics, I laugh. I think about the over 20+ years we've been subjected to and consumers of US rappers calling women and girls every derogatory name they could think of, and visually displaying women in their videos in the most misoginistic and disgusting way --- women who could be their mothers, daughters, wives, girlfriends. But the US market loves to perpetuate a view of women and girls akin to porn. Never have I heard of a US musician taking a step back, looking at their lyrics and taking action to correct them as RM and BTS did. Their ego tripping doesn't allow them to admit they did wrong, even when they've gone on to have female children. The hypocrisy spewed by US "artists" who made their fortune by degrading women and girls.
