it's not a surprise really, the posters were 100% meant to be homages to the movies and genres that inspired the creative team on this film. Just like how in Kung Fu Hustle itself, the director actively sought out the various martial arts actors that HE loved watching growing up, and got them in his movie to play the various people living in Slum Alley. All of the Kung Fu Masters that were secretly living in that slum block, were all older martial arts experts/actors that had been in films the director loved, and he wanted to give them a Swan Song role to play, at least one last time.
There is actually a hilarious story about the actress who played the Landlady, who used to be one of the best martial artists of her generation, along side Jackie Chan and a few others, but because she was a woman, she never really got much in the way of good roles in films. So she gave up on acting for several decades. She wasn't looking for the role in KFH, but instead just happened to be on set because a friend of hers was part of the crew/cast. The story goes that she was sitting there, overweight, smoking cigarretes, and playing Mahjong when the director saw her and was like "wow, you're perfect for The Landlady, do you want to be in the film?" She said flat out "no, fuck off." which made him want her even MORE, because he was like "she is the living embodiment of this character" So he kept pestering her over and over, until she eventually revealed that she used to do martial arts films but gave it up because all the roles they gave her were shit roles, that were exploitative, more sexual than action. When he learned who she was, he was evern MORE determined to get her cast, because she was literally the kind of actor he wanted to put in the film, to give them all another awesome chance to be badasses. She finally agreed, and well, the rest is history.

Fun linguistic thing, when Wenwu first arrives in Talo and in the subtitles it says he tells the old guy who trains Katy (don't remember his name) "I've lived ten of your lifetimes," what he actually says is "我食鹽多過你食米," a Chinese expression that literally translates to "I've eaten more salt than you've eaten rice," which I think is a much cooler way of expressing that he's older, wiser, and more experienced.

A detail that I ADORE that a lot of people seem to miss is that every time the dad falters in his conviction to open the gate (ie every time he one of his kids gets through to him or he starts to realize he's hurting his kids), the monster whispers to him to manipulate him more. I feel so bad for him. He still lost his way and was a terrible father after his wife died, but it seems like he could've been snapped out of it if the monster hadnt gotten into his head. The actor did a phenomenal job with the subtle emotion in his eyes
Also, there's a moment after he and shang chi fight where he's about to snap about of it but the monster starts breaking out. Shang chi naturally moved back but Wen wu move up and reaches TOWARD Shang chi, like he's instinctively trying to protect him, like he's still a small child. It goes completely uncommented on and no one ever notices it

He's not a two dimensional character and sadly most people missed that. He's an amazing actor that we can see them just through his expressions and his eyes. Most people need a dialogue or grand gesture to understand it. Thanks for elaborating it coz I'm too lazy for that lol

    • @TMNTfever
      @TMNTfever 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Normal people go through the stages of grief in the span of years. For an immortal man, his grief could last lifetimes. After 20 years, Wenwu is still in denial, or in the bargaining stage. He is also still angry. He bargains his company's resources and his sanity, on the off-chance that his wife is still alive, despite seeing her dead body on the floor.
I don't think people think about how much this movie is about Wenwu's grief, and how it ultimately lead to his demise. Had he accepted Ying Li's death, like his children have, then there would be no movie.

So the concept behind traditional martial arts training where they punch or kick really hard objects to the point of it causing damage to themselves, is to firstly become used to the pain like you suggested. But it's also meant to cause small breaks and fractures within the bones. Why? Because when small breaks and fractures happen, the bone, once it heels will actually be tougher and stronger than before because of the layer of cartilage that builds up around the bone.

The Ten Rings have been in the MCU since the beginning. They’re the same organization that kidnapped Tony in Afghanistan. After his wife died, Wenwu resumed operations. One of the first things he had his men do was take Tony hostage so he could build a Jericho missile for them.
This film was originally slated to premiere in February 2021 in part to celebrate Lunar New Year. However, COVID delayed everything and the movie had to be postponed until September of the same year.
They were able to film about a third of the movie (including the bus fight) over the course of two months before they had to go on hiatus and send the cast and most of the crew home. The director Destin Daniel Cretton was among the few who stayed behind to move along with post-production.
Four months later, they were able to resume. Part of the reason is because they were filming in Australia. COVID cases there weren’t as high as in most other countries at the time.
Another month later, Simu and Meng’er were able to put on their superhero costumes for the first time. Even though I had seen posters of Shang-Chi in his costume months before the film premiered, I was still surprised when I went to see this movie in theaters for the first time that the jackets made for Shang-Chi and Xialing were made of dragon scales.
According to designer Andy Park, the triangle motif on Shang-Chi’s costume symbolizes the endless cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
The complete costume is made up of the three parts that tell the full story of his journey:
1.) the dragon scale armor from his mother
2.) the rings from his father
3.) the Air Jordans from his time in the States
In the comics, the ten rings are worn around the fingers. Back in Iron Man 3, even Trevor wore ten brass rings as part of his Mandarin costume.
For the MCU, the rings were modeled after Hung Gar rings. They were purposely designed to be worn around the arms like bracelets since having them worn on the fingers would’ve felt too similar to the Infinity Stones on Thanos’ gauntlet.
Andy Le who portrays Death Dealer (the Ten Rings operative in the white mask) and Cambodian actor D.Y. Sao were Simu Liu's personal trainers. The three of them started practicing the fight choreography months ahead of filming.
Simu’s training had two components: strength/flexibility and martial arts. He had to learn two different styles for Shang-Chi based on his character’s parents: tai chi (his mom’s more graceful and pacific style) and wing chun (his dad’s more aggressive and menacing style).
Also, when Simu's actual parents would call him, it wasn't to check up on him but rather they wanted to know if he got to work with Tony Leung that day.
Record label 88 Rising brought a number of their musicians together for this album along with some special guests from other labels to create the official soundtrack, and half of the songs made their way into the final film.
There’s also a video on Insider’s TH-cam channel that goes further into detail as to how the bus fight scene was put together.
And finally, the story about Ta Lo was also published in a childrens' book that’s tied to this movie. It's called "Who Guards My Sleep?"

The army is multi-national, hence why their depiction in the first Iron Man movie was more like Al-Qaeda (this was during the "War on Terror", after all). I think what you're thinking of is Iron Man 3, where AIM was using the name and identity of the Ten Rings and the Mandarin to cover up their failed experiments with Extremis as terror attacks (again, playing into how the US just views the Ten Rings as a terrorist organization).

Fun Fact: Ta Lo, the village behind the bamboo forest, isn't on Earth, it's on Vanaheim one of the 10 Realms alongside Thor's world of Asgard and Ymir, home of the Frost Giants. The Great Protector's brother (yes, dragons have siblings) is Shou-Lao who was the dragon protector of another mystical city called K'un Lun. Shaou-Lao went crazy and killed a bunch of folks so was locked up in a cave by mystical barriers and his powers get transferred to a human who has to prove themself worthy in ritual combat, sorta like Thor and Mjolnir, that dude is known around Marvel as the Iron Fist.
Kinda cool how all the characters, locations and backstories are connected.

The Collector's base is in the Andromeda Galaxy where most of the GotG movies take place. In that school, they had to spend a couple of hours standing in their hands on a bench. If they trembled, they got hit with bamboo strings. Samo was crying from the pain of his arms and finally fell, his face hit the bench and cut his lip. So that training methods you see are unfortunately real. Back in the (early Iron Man) day the original Mandarin had ten magical rings with various powers. Alas, the original Marvel Mandarin was a Fu Manchu stereotype. Marvel upset a lot of fans when they turned the Ten Rings into a terrorist army in the first Iron Man movie. Then the "real" Mandarin turned out to be Killian, with Trevor Slattery as a mouthpiece. The Marvel One Shot All Hail the King showed Trevor getting busted out of prison, but this is the first time we see what happened to him.
The Ten Rings as seen in this movie are new for the MCU, and have nothing to do with the original comic.
Yes, those are all creatures from traditional Chinese folklore.
The reptile looking creature we saw Wong fighting was The Abomination (The Incredible Hulk 2008). He appears a lot in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

You should watch All Hail the King. It's a short film that takes place after Iron Man 3 that introduces the leader of the 10 rings to the MCU. I didn't know about it till after I saw Shang-Chi

I've been selective on MCU movies post Endgame, and Shang-Chi was 1 of the movies I saw. I really enjoyed Shang-Chi myself.
I don't know if you've seen Guardians 3 yet, but I suggest that sometime in the future.

Honestly...an ATLA movie made by the director and writers of Shang-Chi would have been amazing.

I hope you don't let some of these comments scare you away from other post-Endgame shows and movies. Personally I feel like some of the MCU's best projects are there. Marvel took some big swings after Endgame, and yeah, some didn't hit in the way they might have wanted, but I'd rather they try new things! And even most of their misses have things to enjoy.

Ok I didn't see this one. The Ten Rings are The Manderian organization. THe Manderian is ussaully a Iron Man Villian. What they did to him in Iron Man 3 with the fake Maderian was just dad. Yes Jeff Gordon is a NasCar legend. Yes and the guy Wong is fighting is the Villian from Hulk. They are not POkemon. You can't chop a head off a hydra they grow back.

In Iron Man 3, you would have seen Trevor play a character called The Mandarin. This person is actually Shang's father and why he kept Trevor to amuse him at home after the events of Iron Man 3. The Mandarins rings in the comics were actual rings he wore on each finger and each one had a different power and were taken from an alien ship that crashed on earth.

This is one of my favorite post-Endgame MCU movies! Aside from not being a sequel, I loved the story and characters so much.
You may have forgotten, but the creature that Wong was fighting in the ring is the Abomination, who we haven't seen for a LONG while, since the Incredible Hulk movie. That's going to come up again when you get to watching She-Hulk...

So, one thing about this movie is that a short from the Iron Man 3 home media release actually does tie into this. It's called "All Hail the King", and was basically made to confirm the real army of the Mandarin does exist. And they were not happy about AIM using his name as a cover up. It also explains why Trevor is in this film. Maybe somebody should request you to do all the MCU shorts someday. Could be a fun video.

I love this film! It has a compelling story, an excellent villain, the humour is funny, Morris is genuinely cute (even if he's there for toy sales), and it's got some of the best action in the whole MCU. People who are dismissing it unseen are missing out!

Tony Leung (The Mandarin) needs more of a deep dive in his filmography. The legendary Chinese actor is highly underrated in the USA but is one of the more award-winning actors in China. Best acting with his EYES than ANY actor ever before and after. Completely the best actor without muttering a word.

This is probably my third favorite MCU film post Endgame (behind GOTG 3 and No Way Home). It’s immensely fun, the action is really good, and the characters are all really likable. It’s honestly frustrating that we haven’t seen any follow up to this yet.
