  • Profile of an American Kestrel catching a Short-tailed Vole for lunch.
One of the best little hunters I've ever seen.
He caught and ate 3 rodents in the space of about 20 minutes.
    Filmed in St. Catharines, ON.

Great video, and I know that was hard to catch on film. What happened at the end of the video?

Looks like I dropped my camcorder in the car and grabbed my DSLR to get some photos. The Kestrel probably flew off after that?

@@PETEDOVEPIX I love falcons (the American Kestrel is the smallest falcon), hawks, eagles, and owls. I'd like to get into falconry hunting, but I just don't have the time at the moment to dedicate to everything involved. I love Kestrels, but they are a bit difficult to fly as a new falconer without a fair amount of experience because of their weight management requirements. A Red Tail Hawk weighs about 700 to 1,600 grams so you have some wiggle room with their weight before you have any risk, where the American Kestrel weighs between 80 and 160 grams, leaving very little room for error in managing their weights. Here's one of my favorite Kestrel videos. It's amazing how they hover so well. This Kestrel is in flight heading into the wind, essentially not moving. It's head stays put in a 3D x, y, and z axis, while it's body if adjusting all around to keep its head in position. It's like his head is glued into place while everything else is moving. th-cam.com/video/mDRcLAkRZ50/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
