  • The heater / blower fan on my Mercedes Vito W639 was squeaking, squealing and smelling.
    I investigate and fix.

How did you know to bypass the thermostatic fuse? My fan was squealing and now only works on full power so it seems like maybe it got too hot and broke the thermostatic valve?
Theoretically if I just fix the squealing and then bypass the fuse it should be good to go right?

When the fuse blows it is a sign that something is wrong, something is drawing too many amps. This in my experience will be due to either the bearing/bushings in the motor are seizing (hence the squeal) or the cabin filter is very blocked, or a combination of both.
The fuse is there for a reason, to prevent a fire, so bypassing it is only a short term option until you can get a replacement.
You can source the individual fuses, but these are tricky to fit as they can't be soldered in as this risks blowing them !
It's far easier to replace the whole resistor unit. These can be got on eBay for around £13 to £14.
Ultimately you have to address the cause. So check and replace the cabin filter.
Also, lubricating the motor bearings has only a short term success as they dry out again quite quickly. So for a long term fix you do need to replace the motor. Again this can be got on eBay. The last time I did I sourced one for less than £40 on eBay:

These are two types, Aircon and non Aircon vehicles.
      Good luck.
