The band is indeed really great, but we also have great engineers who do a terrific job recording live, and yes, mixing. This session was in the lobby of an opera house with multiple mics.
I heard this song ONE TIME on the radio like 10 years and the only part I remembered was the tune in the beginning, and “maybe the water went dry” and could not figure out what it was or where i heard it. Literally last night I woke up out of my sleep and looked it up and found this. I ended a 10 year search at 2am because I remembered 1 line of lyrics. IM SO HAPPY
Saw these guys in Winchester uk, a couple of times... Had not heard any of their music til that night. Blew me away... They created an amazing atmosphere in the venue... At one point some guy in the audience screamed between songs... "Best band ever!". In that moment he was right... What a memorable night that was.
Unlike most music today, this song has an actual story to tell. I've loved this song since it was first released. Popular these days means it ain't worth shit unless it's funny or overtly controversial. Barr Brothers, keep bringing this soulful depth that only those with 100 IQ can truly appreciate 🙏 ❤Much love brothers.
Love Love Love these guys! I was fortunate enough to have been able to see them at The Shank Hall In Waukesha WI. Too bad there wasn't much publicity on them at the time and the turnout sucked! I wanted to run up and down the street yelling at the top of my lungs trying to push these guys!
It's incredible how fast he plays on that guitar! That takes years of practice skill development and confidence god bless my man keep slaying! For all you musicans wishing to play this. Do it. Slow if down and work up. Learn fingerpicking technique
@sittingonaporch The sound quality is good because they are good. When you have 4 acoustic instruments played by people with talent it will always sound great. Probably just a ribbon mic or 2 into the board. Bet it sounded great in the room. No mixing needed. Kind of like when you hear a great string quartet no magic needed. Great musicians.
Thanks for posting, amazing work of art at 2:38! Trying to learn this fingerpicking pattern to impress a girl on her birthday, fucking hard to play but it'll be worth it
Hes capoed at 4, really looks as if this is standard tuning. Only mentioning this because several tabs I've seeked out have open tunings for this song.
Ken EagleBear couldn't have said it better, man. Haven't seen any tabs for songs since I first started playing. You get more of a satisfaction if you learn songs by ear, at least I know I do
Shady Wilbury looks like some kind of modified fretless banjo maybe? It has a space for a 5th string peg where the 5th fret would be, but it doesn’t look like he’s got a string on it. Maybe he’s tuned it to tenor or plectrum tuning and taken the drone string off. Whatever it is, it’s gorgeous.

Sometimes I worry people don’t know how to love this.
This holds my heart like the arms of a mother.
One of my favorite songs. Always will be
This might be the best song I've ever heard!
Amy winhouse
Yes. That what i think to
Courtney Dickie
you said what I’m feeling
but no one to say it to
so I’ll say it to you
Absolute pure talent. They sound exactly like the studio recording.

This is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Smiling and teary-eyed at the same time. Sublime.

Loving that extra verse they threw in just after the “handolin” solo. Pretty sure I need to go climb a mountain now. What an unreal song

That was fuckin magical!
How are you this good?
Blissssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh man does anyone know where I can find tabs for this beautiful piece?
Pleeeeeeeease let me know if you do find out...
Ken EagleBear couldn't have said it better, man. Haven't seen any tabs for songs since I first started playing. You get more of a satisfaction if you learn songs by ear, at least I know I do
Ultimate guitar does. Know this is an old comment but if someone’s looking.. ur welcome!:)
I might as well add the link: tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/the-barr-brothers/even-the-darkness-has-arms-tabs-2443937
What is that little "guitar" that the one guy is playing?
who else skips down when the adds come on:)
Great song......what is the tuning for the guitar please ?
it's D G D G B D (Im not sure about the last string, but it would make sense)
3:50
Does anyone know which guitar Brad is playing?
+Roodypoo Found it myself its a 1951 Gibson J-45
quality
That's a really pretty ukulele type instrument, but it doesn't sound anything like any uke I've ever heard when picked. Does anybody know what it is?

Is it just me but is this a wintry song? Iceland>?
Is this in standard tuning? This song is soo amazing.. I think ive played it twice at least everyday since I stumbled across it. truly amazing..
I think the singer's guitar is tuned to drop D, and his A string is also dropped to a G
Open G I think
is this a ukulele?
Which one is andrew barr?
Andrew is the one in the cap playing the ukulele-esque thing (my question is what is that, because it's not a uke...or I've never seen a fretless uke)
Thanks
And i think it is called a peanut bowl banjo that is fretless.
Ded: Shix with a K
nope. for example, dylan recorded by a nokia phone will sound shit compared to an amateur recorded in a studio. "no mixing needed" wake up
Not a lot of smiles out of this group...
the smile at the very end says it all
love this song
