I first heard this in 2011 on the radio, it was a live performance with a french singer-songwriter called Marie Pierre-Arthur on guest vocals. I was 22. I don’t know how or why this song has remained such a constant in my life. It’s the one I always come back to when I need to remember whatever this feeling is. I don’t know what to call it, but I think you know the one.
A friend of mine introduced me to Barr brothers a few years back while woofing at a medicinal flower garden in the Quebec appalachians. I remember that I loved the sound after a good day of flower caring and had forgotten about them since then. and just randomly thought of the Barr brothers tonight. Looked them up on bandcamp to listen to their music and potentially buy their albums. To my great surprise one cannot listen to their music on bandcamp. So here I am hopping over to youtube to listen to their full songs. Beautiful , soothing, their sound is calling me back to them.
Such a beautiful song. I listen to the Barr Brothers when I need an escape from life's everyday worries and stressors. I love how pure and raw their music is - something that going mainstream would surely impact. This is beautiful, haunting, hopeful, comforting. This song is a feeling without a single word that can describe it.
I'm pretty into music and just found them today. I'd say they're not quite mainstream for sure. Whenever I find a relatively unknown band it makes me wonder how many great sounds were created over the decades, never really heard except for a lucky few.
I believe these guys were ahead of time. This music style has become much more popular in the past decade. Their songs fit so well into my playlists with the likes of elbow, Mudford n sons etc. Happy times, let the stress of the day melt away.
Been following the Barr Brothers around since the late 90s with the Slip. They’ve just always improved. Amazing. This song is “old” now but also timeless. Haven’t seen the video in a while...
Me and the little lady stumbled across your set upon the Garden Stage at End of the Road; we stayed and were absolutely in awe. We then saw you perform this in the Tipi late at night and it quite simply cemented our love for you. You then came and sat next to us at the bonfire and my gal had to drag me away from telling you that I wanted your babies. That is life. Please come back in 2014. We will be installing some art in honour of said festival.
For the past few years I’ve had a deeply personal connection to The Slip. They had songs like no other. I always thought the band just faded out into existence until I stumbled across The Barr Brothers. You guys were crushing it the whole time and I never knew.
Steady woman won't you come on down? I need you right here on the ground I've walked the outskirts of this town Been terrorized by what I've found I saw a standing virgin bride Where holy Dionysus died She tore the heart out from his side And laid it there, and there she cried She said, "Hello, I'm a monster too." "What poisons me is what poisons you." Into these animals we grew But when we were young our eyes were blue I take my medicine on my knee Twice a day but lately three Keeps the devil from my door And it makes me rich and it makes me poor I'm a beggar in the morning, I'm a king at night, My belt is loose, But my trigger is tight May come without warning, At the speed of the light Make it shine so pretty Make it shine so bright I think I've come a long, long way To stand before you here today They're yours alone, the songs I play, To take with you or throw away Whoa-o-o-o, Whoa-o-o-o-o-o-o, Whoa-o-o-o-o, Whoa-o-o-o, Whoa-o-o-o (Away forever or fade away) Oh, I want an angel to wipe my tears, Know my dreams, my hopes, desires and fears We may capsize, but we won't drown Hold each other as the sun goes down I'm a beggar in the morning, I'm a king at night, My belt is loose, and My trigger is tight May come without warning At the speed of the light- Make it shine so pretty, Make it shine so bright.
I have tears for you and yours. I hope over time the music is company when you feel all alone in your grief, solace when you feel no one can understand your pain, and a reminder that very few things are eternal, but love is. Truly. 💜
Heard this played on a movie / TV program and thought - oh my gosh I HAVE to hear this again. Now I can't remember what I was watching, but I LOVE this piece!
My Ears and Eyes And My Mind and Soul very touched by this - I can't wait for my fantasy dreams this night. Love this so much. How much I watched this, can't remember. Please The bar brothers come to victoria BC. Or where is your next performance close to BC?????
The current South Korean political situations are so crazy that lots of citizens are super stressed out because of the dictator material new elect Yoon. I've listened to Barr Brothers music for some years and last night this song popped up from my playlist, which brought me to tears all of a sudden. This is a really effective antidote to everyday stresses. Thanks a lot for the great music, the Barr Brothers!
Your country is beautiful, and unfortunately dictators are clawing at the gates everywhere. Check out "Queens of the Breakers" which I've been hitting replay on lately.
@@shreddagorge Thanks for the lovely comment and recommendation. I'm really concerned that a lot of countries including mine are suffering under horrendous dictators lately. We're protesting in the candlelight protests every weekend but still, Yoon has 28% approval rate(untrustworthy survey!) and he's got the power of Prosecution. I just want the world to stay peaceful but it seems like an unlikely dream.
I have felt such calm and peace listening to this band and I have to say this is my favorite song thus far however I am attached a little to each one I have heard. You are an amazing group of people to create such beautiful music and lyrics. Thank you for all your hard work and cant wait to hear more. Corinna.
I must say that your combo mixed of vocals an music is so perfect to ones ears an mental being that you strike christmas morn in ones spirt your at the top of the best i think someone from the south like a zz is looking at you an saying damm good music brother !!!!
@MidnightSmog The chords are as follows: C - X32010 F/A - XX3210 Am - X02210 G - 320003 F - 133211 They're played in that order during the verse, and the chorus is pretty much just G and F. Good luck!
You are a very talented band that I just now discovered this evening on Spotify. Whoa. Anyone who likes "Passenger" but wants to hear something softer and less raspy will love you.
just was in the car / moms radio station was on , CBC radio, dare do i change the station on her , lol , a few seconds into this song, i had a moment , in luck i was , they told the bands name , and right in the house to you tube , awesome , great tune , made my day . thank you
This song. Can't listen without my eyes welling up. But it's so good. Listen to the live daytrotter version. Oh man. Or even 'Beggar in the Canyon' :).
Just heard this on Spotify. Is this not the exact tune of Sheryl Crow’s “Strong Enough”? I thought I was hearing a cover until I noticed the lyrics were different.
@arcticate Loved it too, am a new fan real quick. The blue Fender and the harp got to me, but the key and that underlying drone is what REALLY moves me. THIS clip is beautiful stuff
simple and beautiful music. has another famous artists covered this song though? I feel like I've heard this song sung by someone with a deeper voice (similar to Springsteen's voice in I'm on Fire)
Timeless. You don't come here without knowing exactly where you are going.

This song is as pretty as you look holly
Your comment resonatres with me Holly, we all need our escapes and this song just does it for me too.
The Barr Brothers are a wonderful escape, I feel the same way.
A band this good wont go mainstream. To special. they were made for you and me
Well said
+Casey Baccus They get a whole lot of support from their home town tho. Montreal.
I'm pretty into music and just found them today. I'd say they're not quite mainstream for sure. Whenever I find a relatively unknown band it makes me wonder how many great sounds were created over the decades, never really heard except for a lucky few.
4 years later and you still spoke the truth.
by definition, you can be anyone that isn't me so the possible combinations of you and me is everyone and me.
At 55 I never thought I could find a tune a love better than the tunes I love. This one wins. Bravo to The Barr Brothers.
Wonders happen ! Never give up on life!
RIP Chad ❤ you loved this song.

seriously such an underrated song, but proud to call it my favourite ~
Steady woman won't you come on down?
I need you right here on the ground
I've walked the outskirts of this town
Been terrorized by what I've found
I saw a standing virgin bride
Where holy Dionysus died
She tore the heart out from his side
And laid it there, and there she cried
She said, "Hello, I'm a monster too."
"What poisons me is what poisons you."
Into these animals we grew
But when we were young our eyes were blue
I take my medicine on my knee
Twice a day but lately three
Keeps the devil from my door
And it makes me rich and it makes me poor
I'm a beggar in the morning,
I'm a king at night,
My belt is loose,
But my trigger is tight
May come without warning,
At the speed of the light
Make it shine so pretty
Make it shine so bright
I think I've come a long, long way
To stand before you here today
They're yours alone, the songs I play,
To take with you or throw away
Whoa-o-o-o, Whoa-o-o-o-o-o-o, Whoa-o-o-o-o, Whoa-o-o-o, Whoa-o-o-o
(Away forever or fade away)
Oh, I want an angel to wipe my tears,
Know my dreams, my hopes, desires and fears
We may capsize, but we won't drown
Hold each other as the sun goes down
I'm a beggar in the morning,
I'm a king at night,
My belt is loose, and
My trigger is tight
May come without warning
At the speed of the light-
Make it shine so pretty,
Make it shine so bright.
I’ve been listening to this song for years, before my children were born. Glad I can scroll back on my liked videos. This song is so awesome!!!
Wishing the best to anyone who relates this song to someone they lost in their life. I truly wish you and them endless peace.
If I found out tomorrow that all songs in the work had disappeared except this one. I'd be perfectly happy.
The love of my life and father of my children died today....this was our song
I love you forever Justin

Been 9 years since I heard this song.
Forgot just how good it is. Wo der if they still live in my home town of Montreal.
is it just me or does this make you feel like longboarding at a beach at sunset thinking about the person you love?
This song, man. This song does a lot to me. It's so beautiful.

On the lines of being "Golden" when young and conforming to societal norms when old (Grown up).
This is how I see these lyrics....
Is that a low harp note? I had no clue. But yes, love it!
simple and beautiful music.
