Does the Star Wars Sphero still work in 2023? Worth it as Brand New?

- Sharing my update experience on the Star Wars Sphero BB-8 (which may also effect other droids as well, please confirm below), as there may be those fan who are on the fence of purchasing it as brand new like myself. There are feature out there that may should of been mentioned in the retired app like sounds, force band etc however I got no experience so I couldn't explain it.

With the new app can you only control BB8 in directions? Can you not interact anymore like talk to it? Does it still make sounds? Thanks

This is why I will never buy sphero products ever again
It wasn't Sphero who took the app away, it was Disney wouldn't let them use the app having brought Star Wars from Lucas Films. 🤨

I had the R2D2 when it first came out, it was so much fun! I loved watching Star Wars movies with it. When it was Idle and plugged in, it would still be interacting and feel alive. Now it just sits there off.. it’s sad
OMG I forgot all about that feature!
That would be awesome to have that feature again now.
Get old android phone or tablet if you’re iPhone purist as you can side load the app. Worked for me.

I just searched APK Sphero version, downloaded in seconds, fully functions with BB8 & R2-D2, job done 👌🏻
I tried it but it trys downloading additional data in the app with 0 download speed and it just never starts to actually download something. How did you fix it?
Too bad it's not talking anymore.. I found my old BB 8 yesterday and was able to start it, but it does not give sounds. I wanted to give my ground son:)
It still works if you download the full xapk file instead of the regular apk.

@@laurenvoight9204 you won't be able to start the application with the regular apk file. It will try to dl and connect to something whereas xapk has everything necessary for the application to self launch
Question. Like you I saw the Droid way back when it came out and thought it was AWSOME. I ended up buying one new and now I find out that sphero stopped manufacturing them with the bb8 app. 😮. So my Droid comes in this Tuesday the 30th of July and finding out it has only this application for it. Bummer! So it doesn't make noises and all the things it says on the box? Do you know if they will update or make a new app for this eventually?. Thanks

Mine cannot get past the connecting step. My phone recognizes the device and has a strong connection but it won't pair
Same with me, Bluetooth maybe too old? Don’t know

What about the Hasbro’s R2-D2 toy? The one that contains no batteries and I am on iPad. Because I have it on my old device, but I don’t know how to get it on my iPad please help me :(.

Yes it should, in the video 2:33 you should see R2-D2 listed in the list of Droid/Sphero, just select R2-D2 and connect from there

I'm not sure, I want to test it too but I don't have it at this moment.
I have the bb8, I couldnt use it because I couldnt connect to the app. It just sits the looking at me now.
