How the BB-8 Sphero Toy Works

  • In 2015 we visited the workshop of Mike Senna, a droid builder who has made his own R2-D2 and Wall-E robots. Mike's next project is recreating the BB-8 droid featured in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens! We discuss what's known so far about how BB-8 was built for the film, how a remote-controlled model could be built, and take apart a BB-8 Sphero to see if we can learn anything from the small-scale toy!

    This is just a little advice for the people in this channel. You have great content but when interviewing people you should do less talking and more asking and listening. Make your guests the focus more. They spend most of the time listening to the interviewer here. Just trying to help.

      +Ron Jaxon I agree, but Norm is very, very good at taking little bits of information from people who aren't very good at interviewing and elaborating on it, asking prodding questions, and the like. It sounds like he's stealing the spotlight, but usually he's very good at explaining what he already knows to the audience and getting the things that need to come from someone else out of the interviewees.

      +441meatloaf This is what was annoying me the most. Basically him explaining to the guy who already probably knows how it works.
      I just want to hear the guy talk about his work, and the interviewer is just spouting off.
      It would be better if there was a separate commentary if he really wanted to say something.
      This whole video was a bit redundant, because Norm could have done this on his own and basically gotten the same result.

      Sometimes to be an interviewer u must interrupted the guest talking because to avoid extra time or to avoid they talking out of topic (just in case). Sometimes the producer put the headphones to interviewer so the producer can give instructions when the interviewer must interrupted the talk to allow commercial break or to avoid extra time.

    my guess as to why the shell was so thick is so it could create more distance between the magnets causing less friction during movement. This is probably why it was so wobbly when they put it in the clear shell.

    Just a thought, the thicker shell could be there to slightly reduce the magnetic connection between the head and the tower inside the Sphero to allow for smoother movement. Which could explain why the Sphero BB-8 (with its new shell) weeble-wobbled more then it did with the original ball shell.

    • @erlendpowell7446
      @erlendpowell7446 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Danon Alexander Could they not have just used a weaker magnet instead?

    • @danonalexander7582
      @danonalexander7582 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Erlend Powell Ya, they could try changing out the magnets. However, it would be much easier to just add some layers of (for instance) scotch tape on top of the magnets; until the thickness of the scotch tape layers & the thickness of the clear shell are about equal. Then it should resume behavior.

    • @erlendpowell7446
      @erlendpowell7446 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Danon Alexander My point was that the original shell wouldn't have been thicker to reduce the magnetic field, because they would have been able to just use a weaker magnet when it was designed. In other words, the thickness probably served some other purpose.

    • @erlendpowell7446
      @erlendpowell7446 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Danon Alexander That said, you're probably correct that the new shell had issues due to the new distance from the magnet. Not sure how your scotch tape idea would help though...

    • @danonalexander7582
      @danonalexander7582 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Erlend Powell You're right you could still switch out the magnet, however manipulating the thickness of the shell plastic is considerably easier to get the desired effect then to find a different magnet that would give the same desired behavior. & ya your right, scotch tape probably wouldn't be the best choice.

    I have been tempted to take my bb9e apart to see the internals, but not if I need to take to it with a band saw! I thought the 2 hemispheres of the body clipped together somehow, therefore I was thinking to employ a vacuum system to grip the hemispheres, to allow for a strong grip, that shouldn't damage the external details. Even after watching this, & now knowing what they look like on the inside, I still don't know how exactly the hemispheres are held together. Until I am sure, I think I will leave my bb be! 😁
    Let us give also give some thought to the poor brave little bb8 who sacrificed his body for this video!😅

    Wow, people need to be more understanding towards Norm. Sometimes when your excited you try to answer your own question, it just comes from a place of passion. It's hard to properly explain it.
    It can be obnoxious, but don't turn to hate so fast. Place yourself in their shoes before you judge!

    I have got a better design, just use instead of the inner rollers a couple of ball bearings all around in small dents with a layer of oil in an inner hull, to move it just get neodymium magnets around the outer hull and electronics in an inner hull to steer it around using electromagnets that push and pull against the neodeum magnets in the outer shell, In an inner shell the battery ( a large one might hold a lead super battery combination between a lead battery and a supercapacitor because weight does matter) you are moving the inner weight to make it move and refind its balance point please build one and show it here and as a thank you, you might mention me, anyway just build one.. so that the only point is keeping the head floating using these magnets and then another one inside that acts as a guide for the outer one if you place the magnets far away enough you might actually get a way of placing an inductive loader in... if you feel generous to send me a toy version one ass well I will be eternally thankful the neodeium magnets might also be used to keep the head afloat and if it contains some inner magent as a guide or maybe a stronger one it could literally float on magnets maybe with some electromagnet balancing system so than we get the movie effect of a real floating on magnets head that is also acting as a kind of impact cushioning, if the guide magent is used to get power to the head it will need to be an ac magent field and by using this field not only as a feeder but also to put a little data through we might get somewhere Go builders Go !!!

    I wonder if it's possible to do all the 3D printing, and make a physical replica of the droid, but go total caveman on the internals. Like, no electronics at all. Just a weighted wheel/ball, with a stick and magnets to hold the head in place up top. So you could push him around and still have kinda the same effect.
    Like, I can justify paying for a 3D printed BB-8 replica, because you pay for what you see. But I don't have the tools, knowledge, or resources to do any kind of fancy electronics work. I'd love to be able to own a semi-functioning BB-8 though. I think that'd be a great collector's piece.

    But one thing is not right with this... in the movie the droid has (like R2-D2) openings with "drawers" in it... the drawers have to retract into the orb which would be like bulge on the inside! It may be that the inner Walls of the main body are way thicker then? But that would make it even harder to set in motion...

    one of the issues of that BB-8 toy is the price $250.00 for that. Phone remote control BB-8 The batteries cannot be removed. Every one knows batteries dose fail. PCB dose fail. what can any one do? no repair service. buy a 2nd one and waste $250.00 plus shipping and tax again? NO THANKS PASS. Made in China not worth $250.00 .if you want a Andrioid Phone remote control droid? No problem I found one from UBISOFT online store from WATCH DOGS 2 product line what is known as WRECH JR ROBOT and its $90.00 a tone cheaper then $250.00 on WRECH JR ROBOT Batteries is not a problem, it was designed to be removed. all you do is go to like Walmart buy some 4 pack AA rechargeable battery with a 4 hour charger.There is battery cover under WRENCH JR 2 ROBOT,. and install the 4 AA rechargeable batteries that is charged wit the use of a plug in wall charger. and download the app for your ANDROID phone or ANDEROID TABLET. any high end brand will do. not the cheap brand names,. There is a serial number for the APP. I do not know why every droid or robot that needs a App for your Android phone need a serial number to download that stupid app and to activate it. SO STUPID! any way its STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID buying BB-8 that the batteries cannot be removed and its price $250.00 or buy something else for $90.00 that you can change your batteries Hear is the link store.ubi.com/us/watch_dogs-2--wrench-jr-robot/585a43e6adc724ae4c8b4567.html#q=watch+dogs+2&start=10 there is more th-cam.com/video/MhZm1bJOKrA/w-d-xo.html

    Hmm.. Why would you guys need to drive to all those "expert's" places/workshops in order to talk about the topic, when you could just stay at your guy's office and let Norm do all the talking, since he knows and explains everything by himself anyways? :D
    Kinda annoying to hear only Norm talk over everything. Comes a little bit pretencious in my opinion.. :/
