    Hey CP, My Dad grew up on a farm in SW Iowa and he would throw heater hose on his ratchets as a grip. I guess having to work on farm equipment in winter gives you some ideas.

    I can't complain too much about the Apex line of ratchets. It's nice to see a screw in face plate. The snap ring retained plates do tend to have anvil wobble. I prefer the detent in flex head ratchets. I would like to see the return of the knurled handles. Once everyone started to copy the Snap on profile, the knurled handle disappeared. Now that arthritis has developed at the bases of my thumbs, I've come to appreciate the comfort grip handles. They fill the hand and provide a solid grip. My preferred handle is the hard plastic which I wish more manufacturers would offer.

    Glad you like the XP120. I like gearwrench. I have there sets with cases and also both these new sets 3/8 and 1/4 ratchets standard and comfort grip. I like them because super smooth and quiet. Nothing uurks me more than a noisey ratchets that sound like loud Crickets. 👍

    Hello cp. Great video. I got the new 120xp in 3/8 drive about a year ago right when they came out and I'll have to say it's nice. After 6 months the teeth for the locking flex head stripped out badly and would not stay locked. Kinda weak metal. Gearwrench warrantied it no problem and sent me a new one. Now I have too

    I picked up the new XP locking flex head ratchets in 1/4 & 3/8 comfort grip last year and absolutely love them. The 3/8 is pretty long and I would like to see them make a 12 inch locking flex head because of that.

    I can't reverse the ratchet position once it's down in the motor, if it's clicked in, you have to press the button on the bottom, also over time its getting really loose with no real way to tighten it up. I think the 90 is the champion 🏆, wish it had that profile, I like the Gearwrench grips, gives good feedback incase you were cross threading or something, whereas a fatter grip is more numbing. I bought a long ¼" Capri just for that little handle and that one is 12.5" long, so it's important 👌

    Hello CP: Thank you for your analysis on the new Gear Wrench 120 tooth locking head ratchet. I'm very familiar with your Liman digital gauge as I own one myself for doing triggers on firearms. Seeing is believing & the numbers don't lie. The new GW 120 tooth locking ratchet had the lowest backdrag + the anvil had a positive locking engagement when the socket was engaged to the ratchet. Looks like a winner to me !!! Another nice video Chad. Hope you & Henry stay warm & toasty, TMP from N.J.

    Very fair test CP. I also never put much stock in the fishing line tests that certain other channels will use. It may be ridiculous, but the line introduces the potential for variance in the leverage depending on how it sits on the anvil. Any small leverage advantage can make a huge difference when we’re talking about tenths of an ounce.

    The new version of the 120xp is a great design. Sealed head and pretty nice lock like Mac but u can leave it unlocked which I enjoy. The strength of the locking mechanism is not up to par with tool truck brands. Strips out under daily use. But I do appreciate the easy no questions asked warranty process.

    That 120xp may be something to revisit. I bought them several years ago when they first came out and they were trash. They broke constantly and they were hard to find for warranty. They’re still around somewhere in the shop but don’t really get much use. I think the only thing I have from them that I actually use are the bolt biters. I bought a small set and was so impressed that I bought every bolt biter available.

    I just picked up the Quinn 1/4 for $19 and grabbed the 1/2 for $29 Both with the same designed blue handle, they seem pretty decent, use and time will tell. And I also ordered the 1/4 & 3/8 GearWrench Locking flex head like yours. I picked all of these after watching this video. The only standard GearWrench ratchets I own is a pair of stubby 90T 1/4 & 3/8 that I keep in a small pouch with a pair of extensions in my Veto Pro pac tote for basic use. There ok, nothing great but just ok. They do not have the soft handle just smooth steel. I’m looking forward to getting the 120 Locking flex head’s, I’ve heard mixed reviews but I’m appreciative of your assessment and I think you’re probably right on these. I can say the little Quinn at $19 feels better and sounds much better, but I believe there pretty much the same wrench since there coming from the same factories. Thanks C.P. 👍

    That locking flex head is similar to the 3/8 Masterforce non locking flex head that I currently own for about a year with light uses. That Gearwrench ratchet seems a little nicer than the masterforce flex head non-locking ratchet I have that costed me about $30 from Menards. I would be curious what the differences are with the Masterforce hand tools compared to Gearwrench.

    in my honest opinion, they did away with knurling on ratchet handles and other tools......because people have butter soft, delicate, thin skinned hands and makes them feel ouchies and hurts their hands made out of bird bones. people just arent made the way our generation and the ones before were.
    i have a couple of old sk ratchets with knurled handles and i know theyre not slipping when im hands are covered with oil. i have some older screwdrivers made in the usa that have knurled section on the shaft which is handy as hell. i wish they'd bring back some sort of knurling on tools. i love my snap on ratchets with comfort grip handles but i also love using the knurled ratchets. it just depends on the job im doing.

      I agree with you after using the new 120xp for several months. It's not as low profile as the older version and Matco lfr but it's sealed head design is nice but seems like a bulky rachet. I wouldn't mind the 1/2 drive but I'm not happy with my 3/8

    • @van1196
      @van1196 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I couldn’t agree with you more. Very disappointed in the new 120xp’s. I ordered the 1/4” and 1/2” drive in Jan 2023 and waited about a 1 1/2 months for the 1/4” to be back in stock and 2 months for the 1/2”. The 1/4” arrived and and the locking mechanism didn’t work. The head moved freely. Contacted Apex for a warranty and they sent out a new one after a couple weeks. It arrived and it was worse than the 1st one. I was able to get the locking mechanism to work on the original one buy loosing the pivot screw. Not sure why that made it start working. Tried the same technique on the replacement ratchet but never could get it to lock. The 1/2” arrived, and too my surprise they shipped me 2

    • @van1196
      @van1196 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The issue with the 1/2” was that the shafts were both curved in an ark and where the flat part begins they were both bent to the right. I was able to put them in my press and straighten them and both are fine now. Gearwrench’s quality control is hit or miss.

    gearwrench would be a worth while brand if they had enough confidence to warranty their own items,, rust inside a ratchet or s2 level steel is a quality issue,, i have alot of their tools and simply threw away alot of them,,, brand new looking sets stored in shed rusted internals,,, the s2 bits still in case melting away along side another without a spec ??? the torque wrenches rust in battery handles ?? you have to be picky where purchased, you have to prey they have old stock as i have yet been upgraded to newer version through waranty,, if its not made under that number your warranty dies, gearwrench lifetime means before refresh, as ive had sk tools from grand father warrantied without question knowing its going to be newer origin than 30 years ago!! tools are an investment you want to last without repurchase of same item, shouldve just bought from better brands!! just because tools are made in diffent coo doesn't make them bad ICON is very popular as offbrand alternative ,,, capri, tekton, most mac and matco are all offshored yet not all is a quality nightmare!!

HF sucks eggs because you have to drive around to several stores and hope they have your replacement in stock. They wont hold a warranty tool or order one in.
