    A song writer’s dream come true.
    Angelina Jordan's unique talent has indeed captured the hearts of songwriters and music enthusiasts alike. Her ability to imbue classic songs with a new depth of emotion and her potential to inspire future compositions make her a remarkable figure in the music industry. With a voice that transcends time, she bridges the gap between the golden age of jazz and contemporary music styles. Her interpretations offer a fresh perspective on well-loved standards, while her originality promises a wealth of new material for songwriters to explore in the years to come. Angelina Jordan stands as a muse for both the timeless classics and the yet-to-be-written melodies, embodying the spirit of creativity that drives the world of music forward.

      I think she has quite a career ahead of her and even if I only heard this song, that would still be true. However, I was lucky enough to hear more from her and she's clearly one of those rare people born to sing.

    Her low-tone control and power in lower volumes is such a surprise. "Bewitching" indeed. The original singer Jay Hawkins (in 1956) was almost 40, a heavy smoker, a heavy drinker, and she seems to follow his blueprint - but she has vocal tools that he NEVER had. Never thought of. Later, he'd take on the label "Screamin'" just for this one song's performance - he didn't have any other 'draw' so, sure, why not. Videos we see of him from the '80s/90s are after years of his almost 3 decades of one-hit-wonder career, and he knew he had to vamp those up, going full voodoo looks. Put on a show. A costume.

    • @emwa3600

      We know her grandparents were contributors to her musical database. I think this is a Grandma Song - not because we see her in opening frames - but I don't think any granddad would say, "MY precious granddaughter singing THAT song?!! NO WAY!!" but an imaginative Grandmother might teasingly say, "Let's try THIS one" somewhere in her pre-Age-9 years. To me, this is like setting off a global flash that catches all attention.

    • @AleksReacts
      @AleksReacts  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Her grandma sounds like both an inspiration to her and quite a rebel of a lady. I do know Jay Hawkins' story around this song. It's a bit of a twist of fate I'd say considering what he planned and what came out. However, I never thought it would come out in this form from a kid. How, I don't know, but it did.

    Hello, Aleks! It is an absolute highlight for me whenever I see that you have done a new reaction to my favorite singer in the world. (A position she has held for a little over 10 years already..LOL)
    And when you see this, is becomes a rather undeniable fact that she is something very, very special, right ? Of course there are hundreds and hundreds of absolutely AMAZING singers out there, but after having watched every single performance she has ever done several times, I have concluded. In MY music world she is untouchable. So if there was ever any doubt, now you know with which artist my heart rests the most easy🙂
    I just have to tell you that is is an absolute pleasure to watch your reactions to Angelina (or any reaction really), as I know for an absolute fact that you really listen and understand WHAT you are hearing and seeing. Even in the reactions business, that is a rather rare trait. Hence why I said what I said after your first reaction(s). And the way you pick up on minute details on the fly is just baffling to me. There ARE other reactors that I know of that are extraordinarily good , but I can count them on two hands I think.
    Sorry for being late to the party, but I have been racing in Sweden this weekend, mentally and financially backing up my son. We finished on 2nd place in the series this season, so we're doing something right 🙂 Anyway, have a great rest of your week, Aleks, and we'll "speak" very soon. Aleks, so glad you got to react to 9-year old Angelina Jordan singing I Put a Spell on You. Every observation you made was spot on! Totally incomprehensible, isn't it!? Thank you Aleks great reaction , This is her arrangement the note at the beginning was some last minute changes she gives to the band leader , my wishes she called them , The band affectionately called her the boss, she was in charge , even the fact that she found and chose screaming J on TH-cam studied it and arranged it to her liking and come up with her version and her version is the nearest style to SJH . she knows exactly what she wants to do she always has and had to wait for the physical body to catch up , still she finds a way to use her voice at any age to pull these things off she is the master, and she has just been getting better and better as all of her arrives on planet earth. it has been an absolute joy to discover and follow her and she has a permanent place in my heart It is an honour to be an angel she is a unique and beautiful soul and the world is fortunate to have her.💜👣😇

Two of my favorite songs performed by Angelina at an early age are "It's A Man's World" at age 12 ( th-cam.com/video/HEm7tGrjIKk/w-d-xo.html ), and "Lovin' You" at age 11 ( th-cam.com/video/Y4WPbmjgUg4/w-d-xo.html ). Addendum to my previous comment: I never heard this song because I wasn't into Jazz...Motown and the British Invasion were foremost on my listening list, didn't get into to Jazz until the 1980s but it was more contemporary Jazz (David Benoit, Joe Sample, Dave Grusin, Kenny G and so on). AJ is a unique talent however I have not embraced her new offerings just yet. I keep listening over and over her song just don't move me...sorry Angels.

    • @AleksReacts
      @AleksReacts  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't like jazz either. To be more accurate, some songs I really dislike, others I find to be wonderful, but I'm not sure which ones are jazz, blues, soul, R&B (old or new), etc. However, I do like music, so I've probably heard quite a lot of songs, some I barely remember, others end up on repeat. If it helps, the one that worked best for me is kind of most her own. Bad Valentine made me feel that she's finally singing what suits her best - it had the strongest emotion so far, that really seemed like it was hers. She can do pretty much anything, but she's young and I think she still needs some time to choose her sound. Then again, maybe she'll keep changing it. Whether one likes her or not and it is a subjective thing, so it's fair either way, we certainly agree the talent is undeniable.

    Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the same band members at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start, followed by her saying she wants to start over, later she tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly. The spoken language is Norwegian: th-cam.com/video/80f3t3dmBbk/w-d-xo.html

    It takes a while for even knowledgeable reviewers (like you) to just accept that the ideas and rules that apply to other singers don’t apply to Angelina. Angelina is both a vocal and musical prodigy, and she always pays clear tribute to past singers while making songs her own. Even when very young, Angelina inhabits genres as you saw today. You can see it in her expression, hear it in her voice, watch it in her movements. Her blues timing here is immaculate as she leads this great live band through her version of this classic.
    After your first review of Angelina (Bad Valentine), I said that your musical life would change. You replied thoughtfully that you enjoy music, but it wouldn’t be life-changing. I’ll stick with my original thought. And yes, Angelina will continue to surprise you. She has done that to me for five years now. I listen to her every day.

      @@AleksReacts to be accurate, I actually said she would change your musical life. She’s done that for me. I’ve never listened to a singer everyday until Angelina. I’m in my 70’s, grew up with the great music of the 1960’s, followed music all my life. AJ has part of my daily schedule for the past 4-5 years. No singer ever came remotely close to that.

      Hmmmm, ok, for that one she stands a much better chance! 😊 This one actually did affect my perception of her significantly.
      I hope you won't mind if I make a suggestion as well. I've received 900+ recommendations for different artists and songs around the globe now. Some I reacted to, some I haven't even gotten to yet. One that stands out for me is e.g. SOS by Dimash (th-cam.com/video/AUARjexCTlQ/w-d-xo.html). You don't need to listen to my reaction.
      These youngsters are something else and I still can't quite grasp what it is, but this generation might have some of the best music has ever had to offer. Angelina is definitely one of those future (and even current) great ones. There's a couple more hidden on the net for now, I think. This is what makes it so much fun for me.

      I also watch the other reaction, but I very rarely leave comments on any singers I don't really enjoy listening to. My old Dad said "If you don't have anything good to say, then say nothing!" I dislike remarks of an negative nature, unless they are truly constructive and help the artist.
      But, yes, as long as you are doing reactions, I'm in the background there somewhere! Christina says Hi! 😊🤝

      I was out of commission for several days, hence my delay in replying. We had friends over at our place from USA. Since they only come once per year or even less frequently, they had all our attention.
      So happy to hear that you do check out some of the other reactions as well. Hopefully, some artists will be just right and if they're not, it's totally fair not to keep trying. Being from a country where we do say what we think most of the time, I'm fine with a comment such as "not my cup of tea, this one" even if it isn't constructive. As long as it's not crude criticism, it's totally fine, and you're never like that. You know, it might seem like on my channel my opinion matters, but I like to know what others think too.

So far, we have only had two visitors, my eldest son's mother-in-law and her sister. And it enforced a few days reast while I chauffeured them around the sights here. They seemed happy. My son's partner died about 14 years ago due to mis-diagnosis of a collapsed lung. They treated him for Pneumonia, which caused his lungs to slowly disintegrate. He was quite a guy, had a top job in government in London related to disadvantaged kids. Such a waste. But his mother has always stayed very close to my son and they get on extremely well. On the other, losing someone so important, to an erroneous diagnosis no less is a tragedy. As you know I always look for silver lining, I find the relationship between your son and his partner's mother to be that silver lining. That way both of them get to keep a loving memory of a wonderful man. Love to you all ❤❤❤

    A barefoot princess with a hypnotic voice.
    She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. In this video did you notice:Angelina finishing some notes and handing them to the pianist, who smiled as he read them? They were her wishes (instructions) to the band how she wished therm to play the music. In the band, she was called a boss.

    • @AleksReacts
      @AleksReacts  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Um, not sure if you saw my other reactions to AJ, but my journey is hectic, very non-chronological and it's already quite obvious her covers really are covers, not just someone else singing the original. Just wasn't sure about the arrangement in this one. Turns out, yeah, this one too.

    At the beginning AJ is writing her wish list or changes to the song which the band leader reads over with a slight grin...the musicians call AJ "The Boss"! Honestly, I never heard this song until this performance and had to checkout Screaming Jay Hawkins original then Nina Simone and Annie Lennox; AJ's cover really stands out...maybe because she's only 9!

      The Boss works well, cute and true. Yes, her cover does stand out and yes, probably due to her age. It wouldn't be such a wonder if it happened when she was 30. Still, even then it would be one of the better ones. This way, it just insane. I did know Screamin' Jay Hawkins's version and most of all Nina Simone's, but this one is just a bit out there.

      @@AleksReacts Musically her arrangement is closest to this particular TV appearance from 1990: th-cam.com/video/orNpH6iyokI/w-d-xo.html
      Less similar but still worth comparing is this concert performance from 1989: th-cam.com/video/mmbIc8P_yRw/w-d-xo.html
      Both of these videos were on YT back when she was working out how she wanted to do her version. And since we know she has used YT a lot to listen to music since she was 2 or 3 years old, I think it's quite likely that she based her version on these very videos. (His earlier live/TV performances and the original studio recording are a little less similar.)
      When you compare their performances, it's obvious that all the "crazy things" she's doing are based directly on what he did, but I think you'll have to agree that she makes them fit in better with the flow of the music. To me, that's a pretty impressive feat for a 9-year-old.

      I managed to run into a similar comment before I got to yours and yes, this version by Jay Hawkins explains her performance much better than his recording. I'm not sure if "makes them fit in better with the flow of the music" is the right wording, as his reason behind it seems very different (him wanting to be an opera singer rather than sing this type of music), but all the slight modifications she made to make this fit HER better - yes, impressive indeed at any age, let alone at 9-ish.

This is considered by many to be the finest recording ever of a 9-year-old vocalist. I think you would agree. It was insightful for you to recognize her ability to channel different artists and their voices. It is why Angelina is known as the barefoot Princess of 1,000 voices. She also has always had the ability to express emotion for adult events that she has not experienced as a child. Apparently she personalizes the lyrics to events in her own life. For example if the song is about loss of a romantic love, she can identify with loss of a family member. No question or prodigy and now a young adult professional. Thanks for all, peace out.

    Glad you liked it (I would have been very surprised you it didn't).
    Bohemian Rhapsody is Angelina's most watched performance to date, but this is by far the most epic IMHO. Everything about it is incredible.
    The fact that this kid knows both this then 60 year old song and the original artist is amazing - Jay was actually an opera singer and Angelina's song end refers to that. The singers who imitated Nina Simone are legion, but this goes straight back to the origins - IMHO the rendition that - ignoring Simone - comes closest to the original.
    Equally amazing: this kid seems to know exactly how she should sound, but is aware of both her own physical limitations and the musical tools she needs to compensate for them (and to be able to use them is uncommon as well).
    It is said that she was already a star at the time and used to working with professional musicians - what I find unusual is the fact that she has not only internalized the relationship between lead singer and band but also knows exactly how to deal with the producer and the studio crew on an equal footing (not to mention always to be aware of the camera).
    And finally: without understanding the content it is difficult to deliver such an interpretation - in an interview when asked about it, Angelina answered "it's about unrequited, desperate love, it's almost voodoo".
    If I remember correctly, she created the arrangement when she was still eight, but because of problems with the studio or the musicians (I can't remember exactly) the studio recording had to be postponed a little, which is why she is already nine here.
    Nine to ninety is quite right, in many performances of "young" Angelina - when you look at her face and especially into her eyes and imagine the rest of her body away - do you see a child?
    There is something magical here, you just can't put it into words but witch craft (in a good way) may be part of it? In the novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" Glinda, the "Good Witch of the South" is depicted as a beautiful young woman with long, rich red hair and blue eyes, wearing a pure white dress. She is much older than her appearance would suggest, but "knows how to keep young in spite of the many years she has lived" - apart from the wrong hair color, does that sound familiar?
    Finally: there is a nice fan video by Pontus Österlin called "Every reaction ever" th-cam.com/video/4HM3kL7CEcQ/w-d-xo.html which is not only funny but also shows parts of both Jay's and Angelina's performance back to back in the end credits, what leaves you amazed once again.

    • @AleksReacts
      @AleksReacts  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You know what's really funny? I don't like Screamin' Jay Hawkins' version. I always preferred Nina Simone's. This one though - yeah, I do like it. Beats me as to why as it's so like the original and at the same time not at all like it. I read everything you wrote, but I don't even know how to comment on that. She is very unique in so many ways and yes, I do see both an adult (when she's "inside the music") and a child (when she's not singing). I'll just keep listening, one song at a time. 😊
      Thanks for sharing the reactions with me, it should be fun to see what other people got from this interpretation. One thing is certain, I don't expect anyone to be like: ok, meh. 🤣

    A suggestion, Aleks-when you do your next Angelina song, try one of her originals. Watch her at 13 with a song she wrote after the death of her grandfather. It’s called “Million Miles”. There are several versions. My favorite is the simplest one: Angelina in the studio with a piano and cello backing her. In many of her own compositions, Angelina tells us to look beyond life’s setbacks and see the positive. It’s a beautiful song with beautiful sentiment. What a refreshing / insightful reaction! I’ve watched many hundreds reactions to this performance over the last 5 years and you are the first to comment on these facial expressions and several other nuances. Most don’t even know whose’ picture is on the candle. I was six years old when this song came out but remember it. Many people describe Jay as the first “shock rock” singer. That may be correct, but Cab Calloway paved the way many years before with jazz. Jay served in the military up here in Alaska before this and had tried to make it as an opera singer.
    Alleged to have fathered nearly 100 children I guess he had a few victories in his life!

    You were "spot on" when you noticed that it's like she knows exactly what she's going to do next! As others have mentioned, she literally arranged this song herself. The incredible band isn't some studio musicians that went in to "back up" a 9 year old child, they practiced the song with her and realized what a treasure she is, so much so that they respectfully refer to her as "The Boss." (sorry Bruce S, meet the new boss! 🙃)

      @@AleksReacts ❤ you hit the nail on the head Aleks. I love the fact that you know Jay Hawkins. Most reactors don’t and therefore miss the essence in that this is a tribute, a heartfelt tribute.
      Sooner or later you’ll need to react to another Jay Hawkins tribute, with the same band. This is a raw jam session filmed by her grandmother Mary on her phone. It’s a class example of how grown ups can work with a child and show her respect, all the while in a playful way.
      She changed the title to “Portrait of a Child “ and I urge you to listen to the original “Portrait of a man” first. It is probably Jay Hawkins’ finest piece and so apropos the times.
      Look forward to your next. 🤗

    Well Aleks, the fact that I am sooo familiar with this video was such a blessing for me as I was able to concentrate solely on you and your reaction, priceless! Ok, about the performance the various things that always amaze me in this video is the level of poise, maturity and almost arrogant self confidence that she displays (trust me, I mean this in the most positive manner) really regardless of age. As you so accurately point out she has this look that is both dignified and resolute, the utmost confidence that the sounds will play out exactly as she wants. The ease of which she shares that sudio with the band members and the level of comfort that they share without a doubt belies her age. I hope that her loving family continue to shield her from all the spoils of the music industry so that we may continue to enjoy the evolving talents of this wonderful young lady. Oh and by the way I absolutely love how she always has her little sister Juliette by her side. As always thank you this was my favorite reaction of you on a Jordan performance.💐👌

What I dislike is when there's nothing to support its existence. In her it is justified - she is sure of herself because she should be. Very much agree with on the hopes for her future in the "not so sweet" industry, but I also think that this girl will dictate the terms simply because of what she's like. If she manages that, she has a great future ahead! ❤

    She does work very hard at her craft .... countless hours of practice since she was a tiny little tot. Angelina decided what she would do in her life when she was very young and has never wavered from that goal. She skipped the dreams of being a princess and cowgirl and all the rest that most of us aspired to be.

      Just imagine what we could do with those hours of practice... Wait, nothing close to this! 😂 Truth be told, if I sang like her, I'd be singing all day long. Also, I don't think there was a decision to make - she was born a singer. The only way she wouldn't be one is if she hated singing. Not saying that to disrespect the work, just saying that with great talent often comes great responsibility. She seemed to sense that too.

    Hello Aleks, When you see her writing, it is her arrangement of the whole song. She did arrangements since age 7. The guy on the candle is Mr. Jay "Screaming" Hawkins.
    At this point in time, she already was a superstar in the whole of Scandinavia. This musicians coin her new nickname THE BOSS, which stands to this day. A boss, that is well behaved, tries to be patient with others, but know exactly what she wants done. I learned a few weeks ago, the she arranged the whole song for the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE. KORK the famous norwegian radio orchestra was happy to let her do it, because she is THE BOSS, meaning, she knew what must be done. I saw videos of the rehearsal and how she talked with the orchestra´s boss and the conductor.
    YES, she was only 17 years old in body, but her mind is at least 20 years older, with the experience of traveling the world and not so nice places.
    Her dad is an oil engineer and she and her mom visited him often. Those are not places a empathic little girl will forget. Envy, hate, poverty, violence. This young woman has seen more in her short live, than most people do in their whole life.
    Hope all is well with you.
    Sincerely, Elmar from Germany

    • @AleksReacts
      @AleksReacts  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello and welcome back Elmar! ❤
      As someone who has had the misfortune to see more in my first 15 years of life than I'd wish on anyone, I'm not easily impressed by people's background.
      This is why I focus on what I can feel in music, rather than what I hear of the singer. Even if you never told me any of that, the one thing about Angelina that does impress me is that, as you mentioned, "she knows exactly what she wants done" and then actually does it exactly as intended. That takes a specific type of personality along with the talent she has. That alone tells me more about her than any documentary could. Because of that, I think and not only hope that she will have an amazing and long career, which with this kind of talent is something we all can wish for.
      Finally, people who are sure of themselves and stable in their lives, in my experience are usually the ones who are the most likely to show compassion. One can also see and hear that from Angelina, so the stories about her make sense just by listening to her and watching her on stage.

    I knew we'd have a lot of fun Aleksa, I was not mistaken... This was my very first encounter with Angelina about four years ago, you can't imagine how amazed I was, never having heard her before... - What does your belly say about RAYE today, shift her up or down your list? Anyway, sooner or later it will happen... Three days ago she released her full set at the famous Montreux Jazz Festival on vinyl (RAYE live at Montreux '24), and she also uploaded all of the tracks digitally on her channel... Most tracks are audio only, but there's one video of her doing a cover of "It's A Man's World" on her channel... and another one of her singing her recently released original song "Genesis" on the official channel of the Montreux festival... As these recordings were taken from the master for the vinyl you will get excellent sound quality with them...
    Peace and love from BavaRAYEa!

      I'm glad to hear this relationship is working out. 😂 This wasn't even my first, but boy did she surprise me. As for Raye, think months rather than anything else. There's at least 11 songs I already picked out and that's already almost 3 weeks of material. What does help is focusing on one song, so I've added Genesis to the list. A medley is usually not the best place to start when listening to an artist for the first time.
      Something tells me you're a huge Raye fan. 😉 What happens if she's not my cup of tea? I tend to be a bit too honest in my reactions and you might end up hating me.

      @@AleksReacts I'm as patient as confident. It is as impossible to dislike her as it is impossible to dislike Angelina, plus most Angels who happen to come across her tend to love her as well. Some, me included, even say that Raye is doing right now what AJ might be able to do in 5 years... Not vocally, in that regard both are in total control already, but in terms of owning a stage, performing, songwriting and some more. And this is just because AJ will be 19 in January, Raye will be 27 in October... Actually on Oct. 24th, another befriended reactor announced he will do a full set review to honor her on that day... I don't expect a whole concert from you, but maybe it would be possible that you uploaded your very first reaction to RAYE on that day...? Genesis is a good starting point as well, the only thing with it is that the MV is really good, as is the studio production, so that is one of quite few RAYE recordings of which I recommend the MV, generally I advise reactors do do reactions to her live performances, especially for the first few reactions, because you just need to watch her perform... So for a first encounter I'd rather recommend Genesis live (from the Montreux channel) - you could watch the video afterwards on your own, or do another reaction, or even do both back to back in one RAYE-Birthday video...
      Peace and love!
