I really liked how you handled the topic of classism and race in your video. You didn't pretend that it doesn't exist but you also explained how it made you a stronger person. It's true that this exists in a lot of other colleges. I'm glad that you touched on it instead of shying away from it. You sound like turned it into a learning opportunity to develop skills in navigating those kinds of social settings and breaking into social circles that most people might feel excluded from as a minority person.
I hope every applicant to Dartmouth hears your presentations. They will help them decide if Dartmouth is right for them and give them something to talk about with interviewers. As an interviewer myself, I must confess I am not favorably impressed if the applicants haven't done any research on Dartmouth and tell me they want to go there "because it's a good school."
Hello. So, I am new to this channel but I really like your personality. Also, when you spoke about asking God if Dartmouth was where he wanted you truly resonated with me. I think we as people get so caught up in where we think we need to be at as opposed to where God wants us to be. I think trusting in His will brings the best sense of peace --especially with college admissions. I hope you are still enjoying Dartmouth and all it has to offer!
I love your videos!! I'm a junior and I'm heavily considering applying to Dartmouth -- I visited last week and really loved it, and my sister's boyfriend, who's a freshman there, loves it more than anything. This is a really random question, but: what do people generally wear in the winter? What kinds of shoes/coats (brand names would be incredibly helpful) do you recommend to brave the cold? Also, what do you feel most separates Dartmouth from the other Ivies -- and maybe from other highly-ranked schools in general? As of right now, it's a really attractive choice to me, but I feel like the only thing that really draws me to it is the prestige.
aw that's so awesome to hear! glad you had a nice visit! and hmm during winter bean boots/ timbs/ sorrels are extremely popular for boots. mainly bean boots. they're LITERALLY everywhere. and big coats like patagonia has great ones, canada goose is also everywhere but not the most eco friendly as they are not vegan and use real fur :( they're also like... crazy pricey so there's that too ahha. and I think dartmouth is very different from the other ivies due to culture/ environment. we're one of the smallest, in a very isolated area, and have a very whacky/ goofy culture that's probably more similar to maybe yale or brown in the regard of just having ridiculous traditions and a really funky/ silly culture (esp on freshman trips) which I love- no one really takes themselves too seriously. there are many other differences like the quarter system and whatnot, but that's one pretty notable one I can think of right now. glad to hear you're interested in dartmouth!
Computer Science Department (with a concentration in Digital Arts), do you have any suggestions on the Digital Arts courses since you minor in DA? Thank you!!
ohh no way! well I'm not sure how the digital arts classes work between grad students and undergrad, but for me CS 24 digital animation with patricia hannaway was super awesome! and she teaches an advanced version too every now and then
Thank's so much for the video! I'm also a Christian (currently a senior in China) and I was wondering how the Dartmouth culture is regarding faith and diversity. You did talk about some racial problems (which I hope will get better soon for you!) but what about fellowships or churches?
hey joy super nice to meet you!! and in terms of christian fellowships, dartmouth actually has a lot of options!! i've definitely found quite a few good friends in christian fellowship though I haven't made it my primary social space as many others have. but there are definitely good communities for christians even though it may take some time to find which one you feel at home in.
Hi Joelle! absolutely love your videos and how honest and real you are whether it be in your vlogs or advice videos. I'm curious, what camera do you use? what camera would you suggest someone to get who wants to start filming?
aww thanks so much klaudia!!! that seriously means so much to me. and I use both a canon t3i and canon g7x!! both of these are super good for beginners, the t3i is a dslr with great video, and the g7x is perfect for vlogging:)
Dartmouth is my dream school and I'm wondering how easy it is to change majors? Apparently it's easier to get into your dream by applying to an obscure major and switching when you get there :)
Oh no no don't worry about majors haha Dartmouth doesn't even make you choose a major until like sophomore spring and after, you can switch pretty easily in terms of administration as long as you have a plan for what classes to take and when. Since it's a liberal arts college, it's much different from schools that focus on majors a ton, I would be honest with your major with the application so you can talk about what you're passionate about!
this is very informative! thanks for this :) btw, i'm planning to transfer to dartmouth as an international student, i'm hoping that my credentials are good enough to get in, but what concerns me is the greek life in dartmouth. I'm from the philippines, and there's a lot of fraternity-related deaths here (mostly in law school) that made me reluctant to join any greek organizations. But the fact that dartmouth is dominated by greek life is something that is keeping me from submitting my application because I don't want to get involved, but the campus is REALLY BEAUTIFUL, and that kind of environment is what i really prefer, the rural setting excites me. Do you think someone like me can survive dartmouth, without being affiliated with any greeks orgs at all? I hopre there aren't any discrimination for non-greek students. I would really appreciate if you will respond :) thank you!!!
oh my goodness, yes yes do not be deterred by greek life. yes, it's dominant in the social culture, but there are so many ways around it and it's so much less of a big deal than media makes it out to be!!! students can have an amazing time at dartmouth in and outside of greek life for sure!
hey girl!! so I actually don't share my numbers in terms of my college apps, but they say that they look for sat scores over 2000! and gpa is very relative since schools all use different scales, so instead of relative numbers, look at how you compare in the ranking of your graduating class for indication of how competitive your gpa is:)
haha awh thanks so much! and I think maintaining faith in college is hard wherever you go, but not as much bc of the academics but more socially it's not the norm. I've been lucky though to have a good group of christian friends who keep me accountable and make pursuing my faith in college a fun challenge rather than something that I have to worry about! :)
Ok, thank you. I am just concerned become I have really bad anxiety and know sharing a room with somebody will make my studies extremely difficult, but Dartmouth is my ultimate dream school. Again, thank you.
hello Joelle! I am currently in the Dartmouth waiting list and I identify a lot with the school. Do you know anyone who got in from the waiting list???
hmm unfortunately I don't know a ton of cases as I just haven't talked to a ton of people about that, but a normal thing seems to be to send in additional recs, a letter to admissions, or send in a supplement you would send in to other schools (sometimes an arts supplement, a video, etc) I've heard someone getting off the waitlist by sending in a rendition of the traditional song "ode to dartmouth" but making it "ode to the waitlist" lololol that was ages ago though like my mom told me about it ahah. so nothing's fail proof but I do wish you the best my dude!
I don't think I've had THAT many explicit experiences of racism- it's mostly how in people talk, may make certain jokes, and generally regard groups of asian students with disrespect (one example is how most greek houses are typically respected more that have more white students, whereas there are houses with many more asians/ minorities that are considered less desirable which I think is a subtle but very destructive mindset to have)
I'm sorry I don't post test scores/ grades or whatnot on youtube, but yes the price point for dartmouth as well as many of the classic northeast liberal arts colleges is quite steep. however, the financial aid office can be super helpful in figuring things out so that price isn't a huge constraint if you really love a certain school!
+Joelle I think you are exempting CA and everywhere else from this too much. At most of the UC’s that exact thing happens. Although certain frats happen to have more Asians I feel like it’s more of a desire to be in a very “party” oriented frat rather than subtle racism toward Asians.
Great school but the quarter system, isolated and rural location and the Frat/Greek life that promotes excessive drinking is a bit worrisome. Thank God you seem very mature and level headed but most of all Christian. You’re a legacy? Wow nice!! Not many Asians have that so that is definitely a benefit factor
haha yes the culture at Dartmouth (as well as many colleges) can get pretty crazy and have values really out of whack for sure. And yeah, my mom went to Dartmouth! :)
Why are you acting like a school being predominantly white is strange? Almost all schools in the US are. It’s a predominantly white country, so why would it be strange that Dartmouth is representative of that.
it's not strange, it's just notable because though that is true, a LOT of kids also come from schools that are not predominantly white or from schools where it's predominantly white by a smaller margin. and since this is something that can cause a lot of culture shock, I think it's helpful to make people aware and not assume they know already
I really liked how you handled the topic of classism and race in your video. You didn't pretend that it doesn't exist but you also explained how it made you a stronger person. It's true that this exists in a lot of other colleges. I'm glad that you touched on it instead of shying away from it. You sound like turned it into a learning opportunity to develop skills in navigating those kinds of social settings and breaking into social circles that most people might feel excluded from as a minority person.
thank you so much! that was definitely my intention so I'm glad it came across that way!
I just found out that I'm a 21!!! Your videos make me so excited!
oh SHOOOOT GIRL waddup congrats!
You're almost graduated now wow
I'm Christian too! It's good to see someone maintaing their faith even in a liberal college.
thanks! yes we do exist!! haha

aw thank youu!!!
Hey Joelle! Im applying to Dartmouth ED and I was wondering what kind of scores/gpa you had?
hey girl!! so I actually don't share my numbers in terms of my college apps, but they say that they look for sat scores over 2000! and gpa is very relative since schools all use different scales, so instead of relative numbers, look at how you compare in the ranking of your graduating class for indication of how competitive your gpa is:)
In school 1st passes SO FAST, but then 2nd and 3rd both feel like it takes FOREVER to finish.. It might change in university idk
Thank you!!! this helped so much!
of course! so glad to hear that ahha
Hey Joelle! Great video, can you go into a little bit more detail on Brandon Lee's comment? Thanks!
Has your faith been challenged by going to a school so intellectually intense? If so how? I just found your channel and I love your genuineness!!!
haha awh thanks so much! and I think maintaining faith in college is hard wherever you go, but not as much bc of the academics but more socially it's not the norm. I've been lucky though to have a good group of christian friends who keep me accountable and make pursuing my faith in college a fun challenge rather than something that I have to worry about! :)
Just committed! Dartmouth 21
+Raj Chanda ayee congrats! Welcome!
Hey Joelle! Love your videos! Very informative. Gonna help my application a lot. :P
aw I'm so glad to hear that thank you!!!
You seem really nice and intelligent. Plus applying ED with all of that legacy in your family it’s almost a sure thing!
thank you so much! ahha yes I was very thankful it all worked out:)
As a freshman, are rooms for one offered? Does this affect cost in any way? Would a single room be guaranteed?
singles are offered for freshmen! but nothing is guaranteed!
Ok, thank you. I am just concerned become I have really bad anxiety and know sharing a room with somebody will make my studies extremely difficult, but Dartmouth is my ultimate dream school. Again, thank you.
SO FUCKING HELPFUL
YAY I'm so glad!! new q&a dropping today! lol

omg ya Ik ur old uga super well she was so cool, wasn't she?!?! totes should get a meal hmu I'd love to meet u!
What type of discrimination did you face? (Were people directly racist towards you; did they treat you differently, etc.)
I don't think I've had THAT many explicit experiences of racism- it's mostly how in people talk, may make certain jokes, and generally regard groups of asian students with disrespect (one example is how most greek houses are typically respected more that have more white students, whereas there are houses with many more asians/ minorities that are considered less desirable which I think is a subtle but very destructive mindset to have)
youre awesome!
You're so pretty
aw thank you so much!!
You're welcome!
what was ur sat/act? I have a 32 and a 4.0 unweighted GPA. Im super interested in Dartmouth but not sure if my parents will pay 60k a year lol
