Can you so a similar video with international students at Dartmouth as i'm looking to apply for the class of 2023 , i would love to hear the experiences of some international students.
that's awesome! I'd love to! The only thing is I'm not on campus rn so it'll be a while before I can do more interviews, but when I'm back I'll defs keep that in mind!
i needed this! i'm planning on applying to ivies for the 2018/2019 application season and it's great to hear the perspective of another fellow asian. i'm international, so i'd love to hear the opinions of other intl students of this topic :)
definitely hope to make a video featuring international students, but unfortunately I'll have to wait till I'm back on campus to conduct those interviews! that's awesome though, best of luck! and I'm so glad you enjoyed this video!!!
So much wonderful advice in this video 💕 As someone who has been living in the Bay Area for my whole life, I will definitely keep this in mind heading into college and life in general. Recently my family went to Ohio for a wedding and I had never felt so out of place. We were the only Asian family there, and I had never been so aware of my race.
I really appreciate this. I am a D '88 and very white. My biological son is ethnically half Korean, and will always be identified as Asian. We live in Washington State, which is a lot like the part California where I grew up that had a lot of people from across East Asia. My son is only nine, but I am concerned about how to advise him. If he goes east, he will be in a different place. Again, I really appreciate this post.
Thank you so much! I'm glad that this was meaningful to you and I hope that your son finds this helpful as he grows up/ eventually applies to colleges and moves out!
I'm an alum who's half Asian (korean japanese). I'm actually from NH though my Asian mom comes from.Maui. So I identify as Hawaiian- and some people think I'm American Indian. So this may make you laugh but my Dartmouth experience was the first time I've ever has any Asian friends. Growing up, my brother and I were the only Asian people we knew. All of our family is in Hawaii or California or Seattle.
Joelle I've decided to make my own versions of this video.and the early decision video and this one from my perspective because I also have cerebral palsy. When I was at Dartmouth I think I was the only one with a physical disability. Now I'm not and it's wonderful!
Thanks for the video! I am a Japanese student who is considering applying to Dartmouth this year. I have heard Dartmouth does not really accept Japanese students tho...Is this just a myth?
oh my gosh definitely a myth!! ahha some of my best friends are japanese. sure, there may be more korean or chinese students on campus, but I have definitely never heard of Dartmouth actively discriminating against japanese students - definitely apply if you'd like to go!
Most of the video is fine but the problem is some of the people interviewed are complaining about diversity on campus when Asians on dartmouth are 15% of the enrolled college students while only 5.6% of the American population, so they actually almost have three times more representation than they “should”.
that may be true but what kind of environment would it create if all elite institutions racial breakdowns mirrored the united states exactly? Keep in mind there are also many international students at places like dartmouth, and if you're trying to cultivate a place that is rich and diverse in thought, you really can't base it off of the american average
Joelle I agree with you. I personally think based off evidence that Asians are discriminated against the most in applying to colleges since Asians culturally are taught to focus on education and work hard which makes them more competitive than any other race. This is my problem with the way many college admissions work favoring certain races over others even to the point of accepting many under qualified students who statistically have much higher drop out rates. One of the reasons I love Dartmouth’s admissions policy is they focus a lot on fist generation students and economic affirmative action which still increases racial diversity significantly without strictly favoring certain races just for the color of their skin.
Favorite and most insightful video by far !
aw thank you!!
