It happens. I have US insurance that will pay 100% for surgery. Forigners dont seem to understand that there is thousands of different insurance companies. If you get insurance you choose on how much you want you want to pay monthly. The less it you pay monthly the more your deductible is and vice versa. If you get insurance through your employer you could have no deductible or a small deductible.

    • @raempftl

@@jessicaely2521 We have hundereds of insurances in Germany and they ALL will pay everything if the surgery is deemed necessary to gain full mobility of her wrist. You could also try a trackball. They're not very common, but your wrist and arm hardly needs to move at all. You could also try to find a stylus that works with your touchpad. Amazon has some good ones that use a metal fabric, not the rubber tip common with ones you find in stores. Much smoother glide on a touchpad.

Michael Holub I always use a trackball mouse because I like to use my laptop in bed and the trackpad has burned/irritated my finger tips. The trackball is great because you don’t need a mousepad or any surface to put it on because you don’t move your arm at all (just your thumb to move the ball). Two suggestions. Use this time to learn how to use a mouse left handed, then when you get well switch off right to left handed throughout the day so your hand/wrist doesn’t get tired. I do CAD work and this is very helpful. Also get two different sized “mice”. Maybe, using a small travel size mouse will be helpful in you learning to use your left hand. Remap the buttons left to right so you are using your left index finger.
Second use your computer’s speech to text functions. The Mac does this well.

But I hardly ever have to write these days, so no biggie. It's other things that would be nearly impossible to do left handed, like bathroom habits. I broke my left wrist back in 2004, and I'm left-handed. Showering was the biggest pain, though, as you can't get the cast wet. I had to wrap/duct tape it in a plastic bag every single time... one-handed.
    Ugh.

    How'd I break it?
Slipping on a patch of ice while walking up a hill to go to work at Osan Air Base, South Korea. In the middle of a combat exercise and wearing full MOPP gear, flak vest, and helmet. Needless to say, throwing your hands out to break the fall with an additional 30-odd pounds of weight equals broken wrist.

Luckily I had just renewed my insurance the very day before my accident. They resisted paying for it at first but finally did. Same with the physical therapy after getting the cast off my leg! *Fun fact:* The word you were searching for is _dexterous,_ derived from the Latin word for right [handedness]. On the other hand _(grin!),_ the word _sinister_ is derived from the Latin word for left [handedness]. Bias?

OUCH! I broke my ankle and had to get 2 plates and 8 pins. No big deal like you said, but one thing I wish I would have done is have the screws taken out after it healed. They asked me but I declined because I didn't want another surgery. But the screw heads bother me now because you can feel them through the skin and sometimes when a tendon moves over it the tendon snaps like a rubber band and it feels like an electric shock. And I think they contribute to arthritis. Like someone else said - do your physical therapy 100%. Get back your mobility!

GGiA: Every cloud has a silver lining. This is a wonderful opportunity to improve your ability to do fine work with your left hand. I had a hand injury last year, and started to use the mouse with my left hand. It’s very hard at first, and you will feel like a 3 year old, but keep at it. After a few weeks you will be as good with your left hand as you used to be with your right. And that will help a lot in the future for some things like playing a musical instrument etc. It’s great opportunity to become at least partly ambidextrous!

It takes a long time to fully recover. I asked my surgeon on a scale of 1 to 10 how bad and he said it was a 9 because my radius was in like 4 pieces. Had a few short arm casts and k wires through my skin as part of the experience. Hang in there girlie.

Ouch! But for what it's worth, my son played competitive soccer (er, metric football here in the states.) The cost was almost as much if not more than putting him through college. I was literally right on the sideline when he got the hip check (not at all a dirty play, that is how the game is played) and he went down, and I literally heard his wrist snap. Sounds like breaking a pencil. Got him to an aid station at the pitch, and they treated him for shock (he kept passing out) until he was stabilized enough for me to get him to a hospital. The Autobahn has nothing on my rate of speed getting him there. (My Ford would only peg the speedometer, and I have no idea how fast I was going, just as fast as I could. Had the flashers going.) And fortunately, I was not pulled over. All turned out okay, but he definitely had broken his ulna just above the wrist. Then played in a state tournament a couple of weeks later with a foam coating over his cast, as required by the officials!

What did I say about getting into bar fights!?
About 30 years ago I suffered severe burns on my left hand/wrist. Once they were done wrapping, it was indistinguishable from yours.
Since it was my left hand I didn't run into as many issues except showering & driving my car (manual transmission). I was fortunate that it was work related, so all the bills were covered.
About 4 1/2 years ago I suffered a stroke. I was fortunate to qualify for Medicaid, if you call that fortunate. Again everything was covered.
After the stroke I found it difficult to use my right hand for a while, so I followed my therapists advice; under Windows Control Panel there is an entry to customize your mouse. There you will find a way to swap settings to mirror the buttons. A right click by my left index finger is the same as a standard mouse left click with my right index finger, and so on. It was remarkably easy to adapt. Don't know if this helps, but there's the advice. 😃
    Hope the surgery goes well.
P.S. Stick to something safer, like motorcycling or shark wrestling.

I broke my wrist slipping on the ice where I lived in Alaska. I was due to travel to Europe the next week. I had to fly 70 miles to nearest hospital that fixed bones. I then decided to go to Europe anyway. And I was never so glad to eat like an American, with one utensil. I had to switch hands. But my brains worked fine in reverse. Eventually I had to get the cast cut off in France. Which was crazy. Things were stiff and tingled for quite a while after that. But within a year I no longer felt any tingling at all. So Feli, I know what you are feeling. Remember when you get the cast cutoff you'll still feel very stiff and strange. But you'll get through it. Heal well. Take your time.

Griaß di! Servus Feli! Hawedehre! ANYWAY... back to English. I love your channel. You and I have a lot of similarities, but in the reverse. I am an American from Atlanta GA. But I lived for many years in... MÜNCHEN!!! :-) When I was 20 years old, I moved there and ended up working for Texas Instruments in Freising, near the Flughaffen. I lived on Volkartstr. in Neuhausen at the Leonrodplatz Tram Haltestelle. I really really miss everything about Munich, and all my friends there. I love watching your channel, because you seem to be a pretty smart and level-headed person who sees the good in America, Germay, Cinci, Munich, and also are not afraid to say what you see is not perfect about each of those places too. But all in all, you seem to be very positive and do not stick on "This sucks..." or... "I hate it when Germans/Americans..." blah blah. Seeing someone talk about the places I love with a smile, makes me very happy, so THANK YOU. Speaking of "places I love..." I now live in Charleston, SC which is pretty far south from you in Cinci, BUT... my very best friend in the whole world, is from Cincinnati, and I have gone "home" with him to Cinci many times, and have stayed there for weeks at a time. Cincinnati Ohio is like my "sister city," and I've always said that if I ever move and stay in the US, it would be to Cincinnati. (I don't like Skyline Chili either btw... yuck! But... Shhhhh... don't tell my friend!) Ha! He graduated from U of Cinci. I still don't know what a Bärenkatze is. Ha ha!!! Anyway... thank you for making these videos. I do have one suggestion for you to talk about, if you ever run out of ideas. You may have already done this, but in Cincinnati, they have this weird breakfast "wurst" called Goetta that they pronounce "Getta." I think it has oats and... who knows what else, in it. Just by the name, it MUST be of German origin, or at least Germans invented it when they got to America long ago. That food only exists in the Cincinnati area, so you might talk about that. My other good friend's dad was the CEO for United States Playing Card Company for decades. It is the largest playing cards company in the world, and everyone from Las Vegas to Paris, to Munich knows those cards. They were in Cinci for ever, but recently moved their headquarters just to the Cincinnati suburb of Erlanger Kentucky (also a VERY German name!!! ) so, if you ever wanted to... I don't know... tour that place on your channel, or something like that... I could probably get them to give you access to film them printing the cards. It is very interesting. Okay... this is the longest message in the history of TH-cam. Sorry about the novel. I hope your wrist becomes less of a pain in the *** and you can feel back to normal soon! Mach's gut! Vui Spaß! Pfiat di!

Part II- please read following comment first
    3. Regarding Sex Ed in America- At my school we learned all of the basics and biology, somehow though, my friends and I seemed to know about contraception etc. While I am not religious, I am perhaps a little “old-school” on a few sex ed items. I believe that schools should focus on educating children on academic subjects, including the biology of sex, however, I think our schools have overstepped their role and spend too much time on non-academic issues. If schools went back to focusing on the four “R”’,’s, and Science, our children would be better served (in my opinion). I dont believe its is the school’s (government’s) role to inculcate political ideology on either side. I did find it strange that German families often allow boyfriends and girlfriends to stay the night. In America, even in families that aren’t religious or anti-premarital sex, it wouldn’t be thought of to spend the night, let alone in the same room. Even when I was engaged, my fiancée and I slept in separate bedrooms when visiting my family. I remember right after we got married and slept in the same bed at my families home, we both found it “creepy”. I am sure this has changed in America, but I dont know about High-school kids sleeping over. I think that if a teacher or principle found out about that, it would cause a firestorm. One interesting observation to consider- many of my “girlfriends” pledged to wait until marriage when they were in high-school and of course they did not but it did delay their first intercourses experience until college. Whether this is good or bad, I don’t know.
    4. Regarding America’s Customer Service Mentality- yes we do have a customer service mentality that has probably always been a bit better than Europes, but here is the backstory. Until the 70’s high levels of customer service occurred only at luxury brand stores, like Sax Fifth Ave, Tiffany’s, Mercedes-Benz. At most stores, when I was I kid, you would see signage such as “No Returns! Exchanges only with a reciept” or “Absolutely no exchanges after 30 days!” Or “Don’t read unless you intend to buy” (at book stores). Mainstream stores realized that it would help their bottom line if they treated the common man with the same service that they did the rich man. Nordstrom pioneered this in retail. When Barnes and Nobles and Border Books first opened in the 1990’s and actually encouraged you to read while in their store, business experts thought the concept was suicide. One of the first advertising campaigns that people of my generation will recall is Burger King’s ‘Have it Your Way’ jingle “Hold the pickles, Hold the Lettuce, Special Orders, dont upset Us” (search it on TH-cam). The whole free refills started in the 90’s as well. Most restaurants soft-drinks are dispensed fountain style. A large soda only costs the restaurant 4-5 cents on the dollar. Fast Food places realized that it costs more in labor for the front line workers to dispense and serve than to allow the customer just to self-serve. In short, even if a Soft-drink addict gets 5 refills, it only cost the restaurant 25 cents which is more than made up with food sales and goodwill. You are correct that the tipping culture does encourage customer service. I know that some Germans and other Europeans find this weird, but I’d much rather work on tips. I made over $20/hour in the 80’s waiting tables(that’s $45/hr today) and I know of bartenders who make $1000 in tips just on Friday and Saturday night. In fact, good money from tips has a down side as many young people never go back to school to finish their degree. (Perhaps it is not a downside).
    5. Regarding University Life in the USA-yes you hit the nail on the head with American College Life, but here are a few details. College was only for the very rich elites before WW2. The GI bill awarding free tuition to veterans allowed the common man a path to college. This generation though didn’t live on campus and worked full time jobs while going to college (probably much like the German way). Their children (the baby boomers) were the first to go to college and live the lifestyle you a speaking of. But college was way more affordable then. I’ll give you an example-my first year at Ohio State in 1984/85 my tuition was $568/quarter and my dorm and food were $1500/Quarter. So just over $6000/year. Do you know why tuition has skyrocketed? In the late 80’s the government decided to “guarantee” student loans. What this meant to the University was that they would get their money no matter what. Under the guarantee loans must be repaid and cannot be forgiven through bankruptcy. The Universities have exploited this by not only raising their tuition, but also encouraging majors that will never return the investment. So when I went to OSU everybody I knew majored in Engineering, Business, Teaching, Allied Medical professions. In other words, degrees you knew you’d get a job. Of course, there was always the outlier that majored in a Humanity or a Social Science, but always with the intent on going on to Law School, Medical School, or Teaching. Today kids are sold that paying $150,000 for a degree in ____________ Studies is going to pay off. Its a sham in my opinion. One thing I noticed while looking at majors at English Universities is that the tuition is often major specific. For example getting a degree in Electrical Engineering will cost more than a degree in social work. University sport culture is unique to America and I have actually written a whole paper on that but I’ll spare you detail until another time-lol.
    6. Regarding America’s drinking laws- Another scandal as far as I am concerned. Until the early eighties, one could drink beer at 18. Some states required beer sold to those under 21 to have only 3.2% alcohol. We called it “three-two beer”. A couple years before I came of age Ohio raised the age to 19 to drink beer (full strength). When I was at OSU beer was a huge and wonderful part of College Life. I have photos of the university president doing a beer bong in the rec room of my frat house. Beer Chug contest was the top event at Greek Week. Floors of dormitories sponsored keg parties. My fraternities had a Luau every spring and we went through 40 Kegs in 3 hours. The bars were packed every weekend and if a person got out of hand, the bouncer booted him out of the bar immediately. When I was a Junior they raised the age from 19 to 21 in Ohio. Do you know why? Ohio and I believe Wisconsin were the last two states not to raise their age to 21. Every state makes their own laws. Ohio wanted to remain 19. The federal government under pressure from MADD (mothers against drunk driving) told Ohio and Wisconsin that of course, it was up to the state to choose the age but if they didn’t raise the age to 21 then the Federal government would withhold federal highway funds (money to repair roads, bridges and highways) so Ohio relented. Here is what sucked. If you were born before July 31 1969 you could drink at 19 but after you had to wait until 21. I had a few guys in my fraternity that missed the deadline by just a couple days and had to wait two more years to buy beer legally. I believe that this law has been disastrous. First, it drove drinking underground. Kids now will have massive house parties and if something gets out of hand it can explode without bouncers etc. Second, it created a binge drinking culture. When it was legal to drink, of course, we got drunk and played drinking games, but we almost always exclusively drank beer. Mixed drinks and hard liquor were considered “Grandpa Drinks”. Once the drinking age was raised and drinking was driven underground, getting the quickest and most intense buzz in the shortest period of time was encouraged. Third, in America we have extended childhood- by raising the drinking age, smoking age, vaping age, etc, we as society have basically said to your generation (in America). You are not old enough to make these judgements. To make these judgements you must be 21 years old. Odd thing is that many who support these infantile policies support lowering the voting age to 16. In my opinion, you cant have it both ways. With this in mind, I have alway felt young adults 16-21 that I have met from Europe, seem much more mature and adult than in the USA.
Why am I interested in your channel? In 1999 I visited your hometown of Munich while my then wife was there on business. I was ashamed that I couldn’t even read a menu. I knew that I was going back 9 months later while she was in Frankfurt and so I listened to German Language CDs on my way to work everyday. When I returned 9 months later, I could read the street signage and order food and introduce myself. Every so often over the following 15 years I would pull out the old CD and refresh what I learned (In reality i wasn’t at an A1 level). About three years ago I decided to make a big commitment with the goal to become fluent in German (after the age of 50). For the past 1035 consecutive days, I have studied on average 45 minutes/day. I passed my B1 exam at the Goethe Institute in Chicago just before COVID and had planned to do a 4-6 week immersion course in Germany this fall. Now I am waiting for COVID to disappear so that I can plan my trip. I have more stories to share about my experiences in Germany and more, but this comment has been quite long and I hope that you read it.

I met a lot of low income Americans last year, and it seemed to me that they all had solutions as to how to get coverage for their respective health problems - and they were ALWAYS willing to give me good advice - as opposed to what the German media reports.
And I am sure (haven't watched all your videos), you can get good advice from your acquaintances and friends when it comes to HEALTH CARE in America. The people I met in America were ALL helpful, and some lived below the poverty level. Not sugarcoating things, just sharing my experience.

Been there, done that, except I was on ice skates I broke the left wrist (and I'm right handed). Ended up with a plate and three screws. Yes, it's just for the healing process, but will stay there. (It requires surgery to remove it, which they will only do if it causes problems.) I also had an external fixture for 7 weeks which really sucked. (Try sleeping with one.) Pro tip: Endure the pain during therapy. It will probably be hard to get back full mobility anyway (and it might not even be possible, depending on the injury). The most annoying things in my experience were "soft" things, like trying to pack a plastic bag with groceries. Could drive me nuts.
