Tarantino put in the animated section, and the black and white and silhouette parts, so that he could show the blood and gore that he wanted to while still keeping his R-rating...he did not want an NC-17 rating. The ratings people count animated and black and white goriness as less than gore in realistic and vibrant color. LOL Also, scalping is removing the scalp from the skull...what happened to O-Ren is that she had the top of her head cut off. EEP!
This is homage to Shaw Brothers movies 1951-1985, at best they made over 40 movies in a year, if people have seen some silly old Hong Kong fight movie with sillier sound effects, its most likely Shaw Brothers production. Cop Car in beginning with all the sun glasses on dash, is a reference to Gone in 60 seconds , 1974 movie, H.B. Halicki movie , writer , director , main role and stunt driver, he sadly died in stunt car crash 1989.

So he re-edited the sequence in black and white to pass the censors and get the approval for release. The Japanese version of the film has the original colorized fight sequence.
Also, in that Japanese version, there's an additional moment with the kid that she spanks at the end of the fight. And she doesn't blink when she enters the blue room at the end of the fight, too.
Tarantino has a special version that he would show privately called Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair where it's in color of course. I have a copy of it.
The japanese version has a lot more scenes that were cut from the international version. The anime sequence is also longer, and the end is a bit different.

The O-ren character is based on a stock character played by an actress named Reiko Ike in the 70s. My absolute favorite QT film, which is partially because it's such a loving homage to older Kung Fu films. However, Uma and Quentin really had a falling out after making this film, primarily because she was badly injured in a car crash from a scene in KB2 (the crash isn't in the film) when Q made her drive the car which wasn't safe, and it was shot from the back of her so they could have used a stunt double, and she lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. I believe there was also an issue with the scene where Go Go's chain was wrapped around her neck and was choking [bleep] and it was Q who was actually pulling on the chain in that scene and he may have been a little too rough with it. They didn't speak for a long time after the film came out, if I remember correctly.
Hantorri Hanzo is Sonny Chiba, a famous Japanese movie star from the 60's and 70's who did many many Samurai movies. Which was always good with spurting, and spraying blood😂😂.
This is basically "The Bride wore Black" vs "Lady Snowblood". I still remember this one film professor, going through the movie and pointing out every time Quentin *homaged* a scene from another movie. He called it "pinch of this, dash of that- filmmaking". Fun fact: They had to work *hard* to make Daryl Hannah look unattractive. When she showed up on set, she looked like she came right off of the "Grumpy old men" movies. She had to be the anti-Uma. ie: Grim, gritty and dark.
Yes. I often wondered if anyone else knew this. Lady Snowblood especially (even down to the "chapter" title cards). I actually don't mind this as Tarantino still makes it his own, mainly down to his dialogue 🙂
Our culture is very atomized and doesn't do a great job at handing down it's touchstones from one generation to the next anymore. The things our parents shared with us also need to be shared with our children at the right age, and then their children after them. It's how a people continues it's existence.
It’s called atrophy, when a limb hasn’t been used in so long, the muscle withers away and can no longer use it to its full capability. It’s happened to me multiple times due to my illness, it’s not fun but it’s also not too hard to get over provided you keep at it and do physical therapy.
The black & white sequence is that way to avoid an NC-17 rating. There are versions out there where you can see it in full color, but they aren't super easy to find.
I watched the second movie first and the first movie second, by accident, and it was kind of a neat experience. It turned the whole thing into a Pulp Fiction-esque mystery. Where you see how it ends and then get to watch the tragedy unfold.
Fun fact, QT was at the airport on the way out of Japan when he caught the sounds of the 5,6,7,8s playing in a music shop, and had to rush in to find the music of the group to get them on stage at the house of blue leaves, This film got their song Woo Hoo in the charts on a global scale. Different scenes are filmed differently as QT is an inovator and wanted to make a film with a;; styles, so expect more in the second film.
From someone who had to relearn to use one leg after an accident: No willpower or rage will make you walk again in a few hours of concentrating. Even 6 weeks of not having any weight put onto a leg and not using it to walk means all the muscle tissue is gone. Even my right asscheek was gone. ->sitting was painfull for my spine. And it took months of a lot of physical therapy to walk again without a walking stick or crotches. As to the nurse thing. I think there are a (low) number of such cases that got found out. Thing is, there are also a number of cases were female nurses violated or killed patients. (i remember such a case in my country in the late 80's where 4 female nurses killed 32 people over 5 years. Letting them suffocate with water in their mouth so is looked like a "normal cause of death" due to water accumulating in the lung.) It's not the gender that makes a person bad, some people are just sick in their brain no matter what's in their pants or not.
Great reaction... I also adore these movies in not just their execution but also because despite all the different styles being meshed, it works like a fine dish from a restaurant.
One of the main inspirations for this movie was the exploitation Chanbara film, Lady Snowblood. Fantastic movie with a lot of style. The Zatoichi series is another great one to check out, as is any movie by Akira Kurosawa. For me, specifically, his adaptation of Macbeth, The Throne of Blood is amazing.
I love this movie, the action scenes were like straight out of an old Chinese martial arts movie but with more blood and gore. plus the character intros along with their names were the best.
Things you will get in a Quentin Tarantino movie… 1. Incredible dialogue. He writes scripts to within an inch of its life and works with actors he likes to bring characters he loves to the screen. 2. Violence. Without fail, he likes stories about violent people who do violent things. The black and white shots was not his choice, that was a concession to avoid an NC-17 rating from the MPAA. 3. Great music. As you heard and said, kick ass soundtracks and amazing needle drops. 4. Time out of order. This one isn’t as disordered as some others, but it’s a trademark of his style. 5. Feet. Yep, it’s his thing. To each their own. If you haven’t seen other movies of his, Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, and Inglourious Basterds are my personal faves. Hope you delve a bit deeper into the catalogue and enjoy the ride.
Speaking of Quentin Tarantino, I would love to hear your thoughts on ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD. A rare instance of a movie that has aged better for me (felt it was okay the first time but has since grown on me). A damn great follow-up for Leo DiCaprio (this was his first film since his Oscar win for THE REVENANT).
I've never seen anyone comment on this here or other videos and maybe everyone else has figured it out, but in the animated ORen sequence, the Yakuza body guard who kills ORens father and hands Boss Matsumoto his samurai sword and then kicks the whiskey bottle - shooting it and setting the house on fire, is BILL. He had a hand in ORen's parents deaths despite her never being aware of it.
Great choice of yellow outfit ! ^^ This is a film that I love and appreciate more and more each time I see it. Uma and Quentin were working on Pulp Fiction where they came up with the idea for "The Bride". The pair fell out as Quentin insisted on Uma doing a car scene in KB II where she was hesitant, and she crashed causing serious injury. Uma stated that she would never do another action film after the Crazy 88 fight which left her physically and emotionally drained for months on end. Her Aussie stunt double Zoe Bell is in Death Proof and Hateful Eight.
Even though they beeped out her first name throughout the movie .you can see her first name on her airline ticket at the airport before the bride went to Japan .
I once knew of a old man from Okinawa, he train a teen boy for a Martial Arts tournament. Apparently the boy had some bullying issues with a group of kids. I wonder what happened to them?
Since you did see "Death Proof" you should know that the tall, blonde Zoe Bell (from New Zealand), who had a speaking (and daredevil) role in that film, was the actual stuntwoman for Uma Thurman in the "Kill Bill" films. Both are long and lean, with Uma standing 5'11" and Zoe, 5'8".
Uma's character's leg muscles atrophied and that's why she couldn't walk right after coming out of her coma. Oren died because part of her brain was cut off with the skull.
O-Ren was her best friend, thus why she was first on her list and why O-Ren showed huge respect during their fight. The other's didn't do the respect O-Ren did for Beatrix.
Part 1 is nod to Japanese cult revenge films of the 60's and 70's as well as American 70's cult films. The spurting fountain blood comes from those Japanese cult films.
Random factoid, the name Hattori Hanzo was borrowed from an actual historical figure. The real Hanzo was a legendary ninja in service to the samurai and later Shogun of Japan Tokugawa Ieyasu during the warring states era of Japan know as the Sengoku Jidai. He earned the nickname of "Demon Hanzo" due to his fearlessness in battle and was an expert tactician and master of the sword and spear among other weapons. He was also legendary for his ironically soft heart and unwavering loyalty. When Tokugawa's son was accused of treason Tokugawa sentenced him to commit Seppuku(ritual suicide) and asked Hanzo to be his second, that being the man to mercy kill his son via beheading, but Hanzo tearfully refused as he would never want the blood of his master's son on his hands. Tokugawa was moved by his loyalty and said "Even a demon can shed tears." There's so much more to the real Hanzo, you should really look him up if you get the chance. He was never a swordsmith though, that's strictly a movie thing.
3:05 Tarantino owes a lot his success to his amazing editor Sally Menke (RIP). She kept him from wasting screen time with his self-indulgent nonsense. A great team!
Mary !! The stunt girl in " death proof..." is actually the Uma Thurman stunt in this movie. There's a lot of renditions in KB : Beatrix's yellow and black sports outfit copies Bruce Lee's in "Game of Death". There are also nods to Chinese Kung Fu cinema from the 70's.
My favorite Tarantino movie. Great reaction. Be patient, every question you may have is answered in Vol. 2. The actor playing Hatori Hanzo is Sonny Chiba, a very famous actor in Japan. QT was, of course, a big fan, so he had to have him in the movie. Also, Gordon Liu, who is the head of the Crazy 88 has a role in Vol 2 as a different character. Enjoy!
Originally Vol 1. and 2. were going to be released as one film, but the studio thought a 4 hour film would cut into the box office, so Tarantino cut it into 2 films.
He did make a combined version called the Whole Bloody Affair that was screened for short amounts of time but has never gotten a home video release despite being teased. It apparently has more scenes and does not go to black and white for the crazy 88 fight
If you like revenge based movies, you would love "Lady Vengeance", it's the third installment of the well known korean "Vengeance Trilogy", of which "Old Boy" is part two.
I worked with Lucy Liu on a movie set before in Jacksonville, Florida. She is not nearly as intimidating in real life. She is all of 5'2 and about 100 pounds. She was really nice and fun to be around.
It may a bit over gratuitous in violence but the moment towards the end when everything suddenly shifts to black and white was such a cool shot, also with the face off between O-Ren and the Bride🤘🏽 cool cinematography at work
Tarantino actually gave us the less gorey cut of the movie, Japan got the unedited release which included showing the bride cutting off the assistants limbs
Her yellow outfit was Tarantino's homage to Bruce Lee, he wore a similar one in one of his movies. The reason for the black and white scenes was becasue Tarantino was afraid that the censors would give it an X rating instead of an R rating becasue of all the blood.
Quintin said that he purposefully used blood in three distinct cinematic ways (one for each part of the film). The second film brings out different shooting and storytelling styles and in my opinion does an even better job with its storytelling. Thank you for covering these movies, they are iconic.
*Now, look up "Game of Death Motorcycle Fight", to see where Bruce Lee got his yellow Adidas suit (Spoiler alert: he "borrowed" it 😁). AND to see what the other 2 color schemes were.*
Chiaki Kuriyama who portrayed Gogo Yubari, has been in horror and crime films & tv series such as Gonin (1995), Shikoku (1999), Battle Royale (2000), Ju-On: The Curse (2000), MPD Psycho (2000), and Ekusute (2007).
It has actually happened and the comatose patient wound up pregnant as a result. It happened in Phoenix and the patient apparently had been in a coma for 14 years. He is currently in prison and has been charged with SA.

Lady Snowblood...from the creator of Lone Wolf and Cub.
I'm still amazed that there are people who haven't seen this yet! Glad you liked it! :)
Moo
The younger people haven't had time to watch all the classics yet.
You know, I've probably seen this movie like twenty times and I never noticed all the foot shots till you pointed them out. Haha
The black & white sequence is that way to avoid an NC-17 rating. There are versions out there where you can see it in full color, but they aren't super easy to find.
Great reaction. I met Uma Thurman at the Kill Bill premier, and she was incredibly cool and down to Earth. Very laid back, friendly, and authentic.
HOORAH! Finally! Waited a long time for your reaction to this Mary! Definitely one of Tarantino's best! The choreography on the fight scenes were 🔥🔥🔥
Yuen woo ping helped.
I watched the second movie first and the first movie second, by accident, and it was kind of a neat experience. It turned the whole thing into a Pulp Fiction-esque mystery. Where you see how it ends and then get to watch the tragedy unfold.
They took a lot of inspiration for Lucy's character from "lady snowblood", Another awesome film.
Can’t wait for part 2, very different to 1 but part 2 is my favourite, So many iconic moments.
I’ve been on a kill bill reaction marathon the past few days, happy to see one of my new favorite channels uploaded this one!
The Woo Hoo song is a cover from a 50s dance song, and then this version was later covered for Rayman Legends
He literally bought the STORE'S copy.
@@JnEricsonx They are all the store's copy.
@@redrick8900 as in the stores in play copy.
@@JnEricsonx Yeah. I worked in a record store. There is no distinction. If it wasn't for sale they wouldn't be playing it.
The music girl...THE MUSIC! The actress/model who plays Go-go was also in another classic film Battle Royale.
Letting them suffocate with water in their mouth so is looked like a "normal cause of death" due to water accumulating in the lung.)
It's not the gender that makes a person bad, some people are just sick in their brain no matter what's in their pants or not.
:::::Ogami Itto and Daigoro roll by with dirty looks as to not being mentioned::::
One thing you’ll notice about this film is Quentin uses Japanese cinematic styles. He does something similar with part 2 but in Chinese styles
I love this movie, the action scenes were like straight out of an old Chinese martial arts movie but with more blood and gore. plus the character intros along with their names were the best.
Things you will get in a Quentin Tarantino movie…
A damn great follow-up for Leo DiCaprio (this was his first film since his Oscar win for THE REVENANT).
same for me, it gets better and better every time I watch it!
I love that movie. Top Tier storytelling to me. Very underrated bromance movie.
This is a film that I love and appreciate more and more each time I see it.
Zoe Bell is also briefly in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
zoe’s from new zealand
Yaknow, the tune whistled is kinda legendary
Even though they beeped out her first name throughout the movie .you can see her first name on her airline ticket at the airport before the bride went to Japan .
I once knew of a old man from Okinawa, he train a teen boy for a Martial Arts tournament. Apparently the boy had some bullying issues with a group of kids. I wonder what happened to them?
The perfect movie to watch when you’re in Japan. Hope you’re having great time out there Mary
Ikr!!
@@MaryCherryOfficial29:02 the tolime from when she said "you may not last 5 minutes" to the bride striking the fatal blow was 4 minutes 59 seconds.
in the black & white fight sequence tarantino missed a perfect opportunity for a "tis but a scratch" moment
dont wait. Vol 2 is not the sequel. it's the conclusion.
Zoe was the real 'yellow-haired' warrior...
Using a cereal box to hide the gun makes Vernita a cereal killer.
The Man for Okinawa, Hattori Hanzō, played by the great Sonny Chiba.
May he rest in peace
Uma's character's leg muscles atrophied and that's why she couldn't walk right after coming out of her coma. Oren died because part of her brain was cut off with the skull.
Legs` muscles usually suffer from atrophia after a long coma. She didn`t "forget how to walk".
O-Ren was her best friend, thus why she was first on her list and why O-Ren showed huge respect during their fight. The other's didn't do the respect O-Ren did for Beatrix.
I had a stroke several years ago, and I was in coma state for several months, and I didn’t know a thing
"I would like... kill her a little bit more, just in case." -Mary Cherry
The Stunt Devil that did all these stunts for Urma Thurman is also the same Stunt person for Lucy Lawless in Xenia Warrior Princess TV Series.
I worked with Lucy Liu on a movie set before in Jacksonville, Florida. She is not nearly as intimidating in real life. She is all of 5'2 and about 100 pounds. She was really nice and fun to be around.
The mosquito is a preemptive metaphor for the grape she went through while she was in the coma
The best part is "The Lonely Sheperd". The pan flute is an amazing instrument and it doesn't get any better than that.
The reason it is in black and white is because the movie would have been rated NC-17 had that scene been in color.
Her yellow outfit was Tarantino's homage to Bruce Lee, he wore a similar one in one of his movies. The reason for the black and white scenes was becasue Tarantino was afraid that the censors would give it an X rating instead of an R rating becasue of all the blood.
QT needs to get a radio station of his own. Imagine his music collection.
Quintin said that he purposefully used blood in three distinct cinematic ways (one for each part of the film). The second film brings out different shooting and storytelling styles and in my opinion does an even better job with its storytelling. Thank you for covering these movies, they are iconic.
The yellow track suit Uma wears is a tribute to Bruce Lee . It was the outfit he wore in his final movie Game of Death.
“She could have just pegged him!” 😂😂
"She coulda just pegged him". Never have truer words been spoken
writing this as you're starting the movie...you're gonna be BLOWN AWAY....please VOL2 ASAP!
I get goosebumps everytime I hear Beatrix call out O-ren
I've seen this movie many times and I've never realised that all the foot shots were the director trying to sneak as many foot as he can😂😅
*Now, look up "Game of Death Motorcycle Fight", to see where Bruce Lee got his yellow Adidas suit (Spoiler alert: he "borrowed" it 😁). AND to see what the other 2 color schemes were.*
Kill Bill is easily my 2nd favorite movie ever (volume 1 and 2 are one movie split up for commercial purposes), so glad you’re coming around to it.
The song whistled in the hospital, which you referred to, is called Twisted Nerve. It was written for a 1968 film of the same name.
Kill Bill 1 is good but Kill Bill 2? It’s a masterpiece! The best fights, her training with Pao Mei and the ending… muah! Chefs kiss!
Quentin would definitely love to be coma-toes'd
Since you have seen "Death Proof", you've seen Zoe Bell (who I love) who was Uma's stunt double.
@19:18 "She coulda just pegged him..." I'm literally dying laughing.
I love the way Tarantino uses the same actors for more than one part in his films.
"Why does it have poo stains all over it?!" LOL.
It has actually happened and the comatose patient wound up pregnant as a result. It happened in Phoenix and the patient apparently had been in a coma for 14 years. He is currently in prison and has been charged with SA.
It’s implied the name of Uma’s character is literally Kiddo. Her papers even say Kiddo on it.
